Can someone explain to me why they're always mentioning 'ratepayers' and how 'ratepayers will foot the bill' or whatever. Isn't that what rates are actually for? Like, if you pay rates (and other taxes), that's money leaving your pocket regardless of how it's used. You don't lose anything if the revenue is spent on things that aren't somehow directly economically beneficial.

I guess the wider question is: has NZ always been obsessed with having a government and associated bureaucracies that are profitable? Isn't the goal of government to run things as opposed to turning a profit? People seem to think the national party is great because 'they know business!!' but why is that a good thing? Why would you want the government to be run like a business? It makes no sense to me because governments and businesses exist for different reasons and have different fundamental goals.

probably because people think their rates should be spent on some things and not others, and feel a general resentment towards paying rates anyway?

Apropos of nothing, has anyone else picked up laudafinem.com?

Seems to be run by some nasty ex-NZ(?) lawyer types who are only too happy to breach thorny name-suppression orders, and have recently weighed in on the Matt Bloomfield/Slater brouhaha - makes me wonder if they're being paid to run hit jobs.

Also speculation as to who might be being investigated for repeated sexual offending against a young family member.

Looks like they're talking about the Mike Sabin thing? Interestingly if you google lauda finem there's a couple of those messages you get when copyrighted material has been removed. I googled the people who had made the complaints and they're both people that lauda finem has written things about in the past.

Is this actually an honest-to-god real thing? I saw it for the first time today in an article about Catton, and I'm hearing it again here. Is "Green Taliban" really a thing Slater's people are saying?

holy poo poo I've only been away from NZ for two loving years what the everfucking poo poo happened. I mean we were always kinda poo poo but jesus christ really?

Also I'm laughing my rear end off at Plunket's chickenshit backpedaling. It's like a 7 year-old boy saying whaka as "fucker" then going "NO MUM I'M REALLY INTERESTED IN CANOES".

Everyone's favorite hairpiece stand Peter Dunne compared the Greens to the Taliban a while back, not quite on the level of Slater though.

Yeah I'm baffled by Norman's retirement, seeing as he was leading their charge into neoliberal milquetoast Gen Y party, which is what I assume was their electoral strategy. Metiria seems a lot more left-wing on economic stuff and is way more concerned with social issues/inequality than Norman was.

it would be cool if theres a secret cabal of socialists that forced him out, but i'm guessing not.

Incidentally out of the different MPs and leaders I've met, none of them come across as anything other than normal, with the possible exception of Peter Dunne who helped get through a box of beers in the Quad in Auckland Uni one day and didn't talk about his campaign at all, which seemed like an odd way to spend time during an election campaign.

The Isle of Man logo is a triskelion which is often conflated with the swastika by neonazis, particularly if they're pagan neonazis. See for example these south african nazis: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Afrikaner_Weerstandsbeweging. They're both ancient sun symbols basically.

In one of the articles on them they talk about how they don't watch many movies, but apparently they do watch a few and they really liked Ice Age. That's not really a good explanation for having a giant statue of the character though.
