The Joe Wilson "YOU LIE" moment was at a speech to a joint session of Congress, but not during a State of the Union address. Justice Alito did mouth "you're wrong" or something to that effect when Obama called out SCOTUS on Citizens United, but it wasn't mic'd.

Joementum posted:The Joe Wilson "YOU LIE" moment was at a speech to a joint session of Congress, but not during a State of the Union address. Technically correct (because incoming presidents since George H. W. Bush don't give a State of the Union address, but instead a "First Address to a joint session of Congress"). For all intents and purposes, it's basically a replacement for the State of the Union address for that year, though, so it's a fair comparison. (Hell, it even gets an opposing party response; the 2009 speech was Jindal's time to shine).

Nah, the Joe Wilson outburst was during a September speech Obama was giving to Congress while trying to sell them on healthcare reform. Wilson thought that Obama was lying when he said PPACA wouldn't cover illegal immigrants.

Real happy to see President Obama and the Democrats address free community college and increasing the capital gains tax now when they have neither the house or senate instead of back in 2009 when they controlled both and popular support for both of those things would have been through the roof riding Obama's victory. I love the tried and true Democratic strategy of paying lip service to leftists in order to get votes so they can get elected and govern like Republicans.

That said there is movement from a bunch of states to raise the minimum wage, including Oregon where there is already a inflation-index.

Luigi Thirty posted:oh boy I sure do want to listen to a laundry list of things that will literally never happen To be fair to Obama, if he doesn't start a conversation about these topics, no one will. Because you know the Republicans won't, and the media tends to not pay attention to any left-wing ideas unless they've got some right-wing "moderate" on hand to "just ask questions". As an example, other than on D&D and maybe HuffPo, when was the last time you heard about the House Progressive Caucus's budget proposal? The bigger question is "why use the bully pulpit for this now?" (I am drawn to the proposed answer that it's about co-opting the Warren wing now before they get too uppity and actually demanding stuff they can get)

couldn't the President have found a restauranteer who pays their employees more than $10.10/hour? I know there are some. 10bux minimum wage has either already happened or will soon happen in most states. It is time to start showing off bolder examples.

I love LOVE the fact that an employer who deigns to pay her employees slightly more than the absolute minimum of what you are legally required to pay your employees gets an invite to this, meanwhile labor activists in Seattle and other areas are actually fighting and succeeding in bringing $15 minimum wages to their areas through the 15Now campaign. But no, that's going just a smidgen too far for Democrats and besides, those are being organized by actual progressives, actual labor activists, and actual leftists who want to help workers get paid what they are worth.
