I did like the exchange between Gabriel and Claudia where he reveals to her that he's staunchly *against* what's going on with Paige, when he's been the Center's 'do it' guy for it, whereas Claudia seems to be the one egging it on, despite being apologetic when broaching it to Phil and Liz last season. In a similar vein, they've kind of let that admission of Claudia's to Liz that she'd outed herself as a spy to a guy she'd been seeing just get lost in the breeze.

Well, the scene from the trailer for the season finale showed them walking at night with "Apotheke" in neon in one of the windows, so I'm guessing they'll get behind the Iron Curtain by way of East Berlin.

Like the Soviet Union is going to fund Pastor Tim's Megachurch venture, which will serve to disillusion Paige about the merits of Christianity. CBJSprague24 posted:Was Elizabeth's mom living in East Berlin? There was mention of Liz and Paige being smuggled "across the border", but was it said that she was in Berlin the whole time or are they treating it as though they were smuggled into the USSR to see her? The Center brought her mother from her home to West Berlin rather than risk blowing Liz's cover getting them across and then back over the border. Every single person going over the border in those days in either direction were photographed heavily, and scrutinized more closely than any place else. Disguises wouldn't have worked, and they weren't about to show a 15 year old one of their ~sekret~ tunnels.

Vicodiva posted:Thing is that I really don't think Pastor Tim is riding the "Moral Majority" strain of 80's religious movements. There's the whole Latin American Liberation Theology in the early 80's as well; this is only 3 years post Oscar Romero and The Maryknoll Sisters.. there was a very strong Socialist strain going through many churches at the time. So Tim might not actually be the perfect ally for Paige. Yeah, it's been floated that Pastor Tim's a support agent that not even Phil and Liz know about, but honestly that just feels too damned 'twisty' for me, and I want to trust the writers more than that, since it's sort of a 'retread' of what they did with Kate and Jared. The *complete* lack of Martha in this episode really made me wonder if the last scene was going to be a 'flashback' to Phil killing her silently after revealing his ~true face~ to her, and that'd be why he was being even more morose than usual. Interesting article: http://www.refinery29.com/2015/04/85945/annet-mahendru-the-americans-season-3-finale#slide Was that what it was really like for KGB operatives in the U.S.? "Joe Weisberg [who created the show] worked for the CIA. Our scripts are checked by the CIA and by Russia. They check on what we write about them because it's based on historical events." Do people recognize you as Nina? "Yes, and they're always weirded out because I'm laughing or something." BIG HEADLINE fucked around with this message at 09:36 on Apr 23, 2015 |

Jack Skeleton posted:That really didn't feel like a season closer. I agree, this season was a whole lot of nothing. To be fair, history's sort of on autopilot until Gorby comes along. That's why they had to do the Apartheid subplot - just to fill space. Given some time to think about it, if they're employing like a dozen people to monitor Mail Bot's chatter, it's only logical that Phil and Liz's phones are monitored as well. Remember there was a hardwired line to that house Learick liquidated. My guess is that Pastor Tim and his wife will die tragically in a "gas leak" and Paige will have to be sent to "boarding school." Henry will get an Atari 2600 and promptly forget he ever had a sister.

It would have been an ape of the plot of the very odd Cold War movie "White Nights," where Mikhail Baryshnikov gets the CIA to trade a worthwhile KGB asset in exchange for Gregory Hines. If you haven't seen it...it's poo poo, but it's that kind of mid-80s poo poo that's nostalgic.
