SMS' boss was posting about opening a funding round for PCARS2. I hope that'll indeed involve the full FEM model for the tires, and offroad racing. Both were pushed to PCARS2.

I think a lot of initial work will be the physics engine, given that offroad/rally was talked about before. While their physics dude says that the tread simulation is already capable to deal with that (driving on gravel and grass are based on that), I'm sure practically there'll be quite some issues to make it work realistic and full-time. The AWD in the game is a hack, too.

Yeah, IIRC, there was some stuff about targeting it holding the project back. Same reason why the Xbox360 and PS3 versions were ditched. They held onto the Wii U version for a while longer, until the community mucked up about it and it was ditched, too.

The game does turn off the stupid stuff on the wheel by itself, like the centering. Only use the profiler if you want to override the behavior.

You can pretty much take all default settings. The deadzones are just to have the pedals react a little sooner, it's subjective. My real car's electronic throttle pedal has less deadzone than the game's default setting, so I wanted that. The brake linearity needs to be changed in my opinion, because the default setting seems to be something for the more expensive loadcell based pedals. The sprung G27 brake pedal with default settings feels like jumping on it with both feet just by looking at it wrong.

The sudden loss of control while cornering when playing with a gamepad probably stems from the tire model, which simulates the warping and buckling of the carcass under load, which results in grip loss. When driving on the edge, there isn't much leeway on a tire in that regard, the same time a gamepad isn't a precision control compared to a wheel (twiddly thumbstick vs nearly three full turns from lock to lock), which also gives force feedback early enough to let you react accordingly. Overshoot with the turn in, the stressed tire thanks you by skidding off track. Finally on top of that, the nature of it being a game makes people push the cars more than they'd in real life, minimizing the headroom.

--edit: Additionally, the caster in the front wheels will straighten or countersteer for you, if your rear breaks out or you understeer, because it feeds into the FFB of your wheel, which will turn the itself for you if you let it go. As in real life, however another disadvantage for the gamepad, which will pull the tires just straight if you let go of the stick, causing more grief on the car control.

Yeah, and not locking up your tires shortens the distance you need to stop. You stop a lot more quickly when you're 'actively' braking then when you lock your tires and lose grip and slide
Actually, I wasn't sarcastic. I can brake faster when pumping the brake than "relying" on ABS compensating for the lack of feel in the pedal (or FFB, if you're on a bumpy piece of road, which masks feel of grip loss).

Bump is a damping term, im still not sure what sims mean by fast and slow damping.
Most decent dampers have valving that switches depending on oil flow velocity. If the damper moves slowly, the slow damping valve is open, if the damper moves quickly, the fast damping valve opens. Like this you can control how much things are dampened depending on what ground you ride. You usually want slow compression and fast rebound for slow undulations in the road, where as you want the opposite for fast undulations, like patchy roads.

Probably was running some. Before the goon races, I was also driving Nordschleife on an open practise server with the same car in dry conditions, and it was way grippier and controllable. During the race with goons, I kept understeering at mediocre speeds. The only real difference between the two races is that former was in clear weather and latter with medium clouds but dry. Either the game hosed up or "clouds" will make the game chose rain tires when set to automatic choice.

Game's really inconsistent. In the lobby before the game started, I specifically changed the setup to medium slicks on my GT3 car, saved it to ALL circuits, and when the game started, I had to pit and checked things, it was again set to auto.

Bumping into each other is practically unavoidable. Rear mirrors are only so useful, the camera perspective gives a false sense of space and everyone cuts you off, anyway. Plus the game doesn't have nearly enough blue flags (--edit: assuming they wouldn't get ignored to begin with).
