The Wailing is really an experience, very unique even if you've already seen a lot of other South Korean films. I gotta rewatch that at some point.

Fair warning, it's a pretty long movie but it's totally worth it.

It could have used a little editing, I don't think it needs to be two and a half hours long. Great flick other than that.

The Wailing was p good. I thought I'd fall asleep or turn it off and come back to it because it's been a long three weeks and I am tired as poo poo. But it kept me up and entranced. I wanted to reach through the TV and smack a few of these dudes, though.

Uhh, Stroszek, Pink Flamingos, Stalker, Wild at Heart, Zoolander. I have never succeeded in getting anyone else to watch The Lobster. I tried to trick my coworker into watching it by saying it was a romcom (which is true according to Netflix), but she got bored after 15 minutes and turned it off.

The silent disco scene on The Lobster always makes me smile.

I'd seen it mentioned before I watched it and I didn't think the scene was anywhere near as bad or gruesome as it had been described, considering you don't see the murder, just the dog in a pool of blood afterwards. I thought the woman talking about kicking the dog was more disturbing than actually seeing it. It's not like I love seeing dead dogs or anything, but I guess that's a dealbreaker for a lot of people

I'm pretty sure the majority of people will tap out like 15 minutes in because it's the kind of movie you can tell very quickly if you're going to like it or not. Especially considering what the very first scene is.

I watched The Lobster. I thought it had some creative ideas, and I appreciate anything that tries to do something different. I usually don't even mind a polarizing movie. But it was so mean-spirited, I ended up hating it. That's something I never handle well.

All of Yorgos Lanthimos movies are pretty mean spirited. I liked Dogtooth and Killing of a Sacred Deer quite a bit, but I just couldn't get into the Lobster. I didn't hate it but I just kept getting bored with it and zoning out.

I was a super bowl party and ended up buddying up with some older gay couple who were equally disinterred in football as me, and we talked about movies in the corner most of the game. At one point the most suburban woman I've ever seen in her late 60's yelled across the room "what movie are you talking about?!" and the guy I was talking to said "The Lobster" and she goes "I watched that! I loved it!". We all kind of just looked at each other in shock and said guy was like " I never would have guessed you'd watch something like that Mary" and she was like "Yup! don't assume things" It was pretty hilarious.

Something about The Lobster just did not click with me at all. Usually bleak quirky mean-spirited stuff is right up my alley, but something about that movie just came off as excessively sadistic. I’d hesitate to say I hated it, but I definitely have zero desire to ever rewatch it.

I agree, once they left the hotel it turns into almost like a Wes Anderson torture porn movie. The "Red Kiss", blinding, forced murder, the ending with the knife, etc. The dog thing wasn't as unsettling as it could be somehow because it was actually a person, not an animal we perceive to be an innocent creature. The parts in the hotel were great, then it takes a sharp turn into sadism.

Few questions
Is it a rule in South Korean films that if there is any comedic elements the movie is going to be hosed up, if there is no comedic elements it will be extra hosed up?

Are north koreans off the table culturally or do they ever use them for villains?

Honestly after the pacing beforehand I was happy it not only showed us the monster, but gave the audience a pretty lengthy sequence where it was fully visible in the denouement

Maybe I was just super stoned because that was the only halfway decent part for me, I can barely remember the rest. I’m a major sucker for even bad practical effects though

i just finished, and i have to disagree. all 2.5 hours seemed to be just in the service of christian good/evil symbolism. the first half was fine and then i just got super bored. im pretty mad at all these recs i got from horror fans. it was barely a horror movie. more of a who dunnit but with zombies occasionally. usually i like the over long korean horror hybrid type films ive seen. but this one just wasnt worth it.

I’ve been kinda wary about watching it for this reason; the response seems to be that you either love it or hate it. 2.5 hours seems like a big commitment for that.

They get used, usually in the mid 90s style of villains that you can kind of sympathize with since their goal was usually reunification.

You've got guts! Come to my village, I'll buy you lunch.
If you read The Wailing as exclusively endorsing the Christian take on what's going on, then yeah, you're not going to enjoy the movie, because there are three mutually exclusive cultural explanations for what's going on, each accusing the others of being liars and devils, and the impossibility of telling which one is true is literally the whole point. The movie is about the incredibly uncomfortable history between Christianity, native Korean religion, and Buddhism -- with the latter portrayed by a deliberately exaggerated racial stereotype of an evil/perverted Japanese man.

MORAL:
To the vector belong the spoils.
Also it's just kind of a straightforward story about a small town that sees a series of unspeakable crimes committed, and in response an antisocial foreigner is scapegoated which just causes all the endemic social crises to metastasize to the point where everyone is completely atomized and consumed by reactionary superstition and paranoia. The syncretic use of various forms of religion and spirituality as motifs is just a realistic and nuanced way of representing that existential horror, but none of them is ever actually endorsed. If anything, the spiritual viewpoint that the film endorses is stridently non-theist or agnostic. All of the religions are real, and therefore they are all patently false. Your mind makes it real as you're grasping for a convenient solution to the insurmountable problem of the meaningless of existence.
