Does Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt get better? People keep recommending it to me, but the pilot was aggressively unfunny. I'm willing to give it a few more episodes if it improves, but I'd rather start watching something else from my giant backlog of shows if not.

Do you like 30 Rock? Do you like Tina Fey?

If not, then stop watching.

Yeah this is definitely not the kind of movie where you think any of these people are funny or even particularly good people. They are all failed, aging comedians who never got a chance for a big break, and have nothing to fall back on.

I was watchin a making of to moana and they told they spend much time to bring the history/culture correct in the movie.

The scene where Moana discovers that her ancestors were ocean explorers / island hoppers and realizes that's why she feels so restless (aka becomes aware of her roots) legit brings tears to my eye. It's so good. Moana is good.

I just watched all 13 episodes of Riverdale. It is a show with tons of issues, yet I couldn't stop watching. Also let me mention I am in my 40's, and this is a show for teens. What is wrong with me? Could it be my nostalgia for characters since I use to read the comic? Plus people I grew up with like Luke Perry, Molly Ringwald, and the guy that is not only the killer in Scream, but Satan and Sadam have his picture over their bed. Or have I just lost my mind?

It's very stylized and pretty to look at and also I have a huge crush on Camila Mendes so yeah, I liked it too. It's kinda twin peaks for teens so that's cool.

CExG is my favorite show on TV right now but I'm also a douche who loved Hamilton and, for a while, Glee. IMO it's hilarious (though cringey) at times.

I think most fans are in agreement that Josh sucks.

If you like old dudes + modern noir, and you like long takes, watch Too Late. It stars John Hawkes and the whole movie is shot in 3 or 4 takes. I think it's on Netflix but I may have seen it on Prime. It's a gem.

Can confirm Too Late is on Netflix

Fake movie violence can be funny, since you know no one was actually hurt or killed. You can kind of smile in that shocked way, or go ewwwww, but it's just a movie. And you can appreciate the work that effects people did, especially if it elicited an honest reaction out of you.

Meanwhile watching people jump off the WTC, even set to Benny Hill music, is not funny past age 13 because you know that each one of those people had a life, family, dreams, aspirations, etc.

I'm glad I read some reviews first. It sounds like a complete waste of time.

"You (the lab rat) are placed in a Skinner box (the movie theater) and subjected to random negative stimuli (filmed violence, as a substitute for painful electrical jolts). Haneke, whose academic background is in psychology, philosophy and theater, assumes the role of empirical taskmaster. He hypothesizes that his box will shock you into a knee-jerk ethical dilemma. To pass the test, you must reject the false premise of the experiment itself (if only on the grounds of insufferable smugness) and walk out.

Hubbardologist posted:

Given that the audience is effectively the main antagonist of the film, it's amusing to see the reactions of viewers as they realize what's happening (or don't, which is also funny) and the "well, I get the point, but I'm not one of those people who likes torture porn, so Haneke can gently caress off" kinds of reviews by critics.

To get back to recommendations, I've been listening to the 30 for 30 Podcast series that just came out (which was very very good and should be checked out - "Yankees Suck" is probably my favorite), and I've watched most of the available 30 for 30 stuff on Netflix. Any recommendations for offbeat sports documentaries?

When Walt moves into an industrial sized meth lab and starts throwing bodies into barrels of acid it's pretty clear he's not doing it for his family at that point.

I'd say the moment he turns down his friend's money (what was that, the second episode?) was when you could tell that he didn't actually give a poo poo about his family and was still bitter about his "legacy".

I surprisingly really enjoyed Nick Kroll's new animated show, Big Mouth. It's got some pretty awkward moments, but the writing is good and the show does have really funny moments and some self reflection. Good voice cast and guest stars as well.

The hormone demon reflecting back and regretting the previous incident with Garrison Keillor's severed head was great. And the stinger at the very end of the season.

Just to hop on the "Aaron Mahnke is a total hack" train, I got one of his books that he hocks every podcast. It was one of the worst horror books I've ever read, completely derivative and cliche, with a "twist" cliffhanger ending that didn't work at all. And it didn't seem like he had bothered editing it at all.

As bad a host as he is now, he was ten times worse in the beginning. It was an absolute struggle to get through his shows. And he does the absolute bare minimum of research - listen to him pronounce Reykjavik. Not sure why I kept up with the show, to be honest. He does put out interesting stories that I haven't heard before on occasion, but usually its the same old Dyatlov Pass, Werewolf, H. H. Holmes stuff better told in a million other places.

He really is the worst podcast host and the fact that Lore got a TV show before Night Vale (and I get that Night Vale is NOT for everyone, but at least the host is phenomenal) is damaging to my psyche. Is he really the narrator of his TV show? What a terrible decision. The producers should be ashamed of themselves.

Yeah, that was a pretty bad article at Vulture. Sure, Bezos is looking for more mainstream things. But they have a lot of other small shows that have not been canceled. The problem with I Love Dick and One Mississippi was that they weren't good. They gave One Mississippi one more season than it probably deserved, probably just because out of respect to Tig Notaro and it had an incredibly small budget. Season 2 failed to attract any attention, so there it goes on the chopping block.

Yeah, they're streaming, but people still need to watch them, otherwise why would they keep pumping money into things that aren't making them any money?

I thought season 1 of One Mississippi was really great, but I can't imagine what S2 would even be about.
