IMO, this is also the current state of Android Wear. I had the Moto 360v1 for a while and found I was just using it for notifications. I picked up the Garmin Vivoactive for a song and it's been tremendous. Ten day battery life, ability to do accurate GPS for all activities, and straightforward and simple notification mirroring. It's not fancy, it's not pretty, but it's great.

Anxiously waiting for iWatch 2.0 with built in GPS and better battery though. I'll drop for that.

So what's the real scoop on the base choices. Is there a meaningful difference between the aluminum and the stainless that I should consider? Trying to decide if the best choice is to pick up the 42mm sport and find a good third party band that I like or if paying up for the stainless has value.

Anyone know off the top of their head how Apple Store availability is refreshed? Should I be checking multiple times a day to see if I can reserve in-store pickup, or if it shows no availability at 8am that'll be the same for the rest of the day?

I hope stock levels even out this week. I don't want to have to wait until October :|

In the Oct 17-28 window so would love to know the answer to this as well. I have four stores within an hour of me.

Was able to answer my own question. Kept periodically checking the website but not adding to the Bag, there's a link to checking store availability. Before I left for lunch there was nothing within 150 miles of me, just randomly checked again and one store had a big green available icon. So just keep checking I guess.

Is this a controllable behavior? I'm new to the Apple Watch with my S2. When I receive a message (or any notification really) my watch will ding but nothing out of my phone. No lighting up the display or anything. Can I change a setting somewhere so that way I receive the notification on both? I'd like my phone to wake as well as the watch.

I don't know if there's a setting for this but I'm genuinely curious as to why you want this to happen.

Perhaps it's a matter of getting used to the watch, but I spend a good portion of my day with my phone on my desk face up and if for whatever reason I don't notice the watch notification I wouldn't catch it on my phone. I've missed several because of it. I want to say when I was an Android user and had a Moto 360 it notified both so I'm a bit used to that behavior.

I suppose I need to get used to relying on the watch for notifications.

Fair enough. I'm in a similar situation, though I've gotten used to keeping my phone in my pocket now and only taking it out for something I actually need to respond to with a full keyboard when I see it come in through the watch. For me, I'd be annoyed if both notified me at the same time which is why I was curious.

If there isn't a setting to accomplish this, try setting a repeat alert for messages in your watch settings, or turn on the "prominent haptic" setting under "sounds & haptics" in the watch's settings and it'll be much harder to miss anything.

I do love that aspect and was just driving around when I realized what the biggest change is for me. When I have Waze up the phone is active so my watch never buzzes or anything on my commutes/drives. Not that I want to be managing alerts while driving but being aware my wife sent me a text can trigger me to call her. I have long drives so it's sometimes a problem to wait 60 minutes or so to see I needed to tend to something.

I shall adapt!

Is Waze that much better than using Maps for driving directions? One of my favorite watch features is how the watch will vibrate like a turn signal when a turn is coming up.

That's a nice feature that I haven't played with but Waze is far better in my opinion. It's realtime routing around hazards / traffic ahead continues to amaze me. When I go against it 90% of the time I regret not listening to it as I watch the traffic fly by on the local/express where it told me to switch to.

Plus I can easily send my ETA to my wife so she knows when to expect me.

Oh sweet, very nice. Didn't realize that my headset had multi-pair functionality. I had to reboot my watch though as it wouldn't pair. That worked and now I'm on my way. Still not as clean of a handoff as I'd prefer (it only has Forget device as an option on the watch, not disconnect and I have to select connect after turning my headphones on, it won't auto connect) but I can deal with it!

I went for a run yesterday and left my phone at home. Strava froze up on me but the activity app went strong the whole way. Does Strava (or all running/cycling apps) still require the phone? Is this a limitation or app developer limitation?

Sucks since if it didn't happen on Strava it didn't happen...

Ah so third parties cannot access the GPS, that's the issue.

I also use Strava primarily for cycling but my friends on it (IRL ones mostly) also enjoy running so we talk about our activities. Good to have in one place.

Plus Strava has some cool third party visualization tools to fart around with.

I do have it but figure if I can steer away from the highest risk stuff that'd be good. I did get a scratch on the case in the first few days so a little sensitive about it. Cannot say it happened during workout though. Good news is that I found a replacement S2 before my 14 days was up so got a brand new one.

S2 42MM at 77%. Off charger 7 hours, worked out for an hour (Other activity, unsure if GPS is active at that time). On days I workout I usually get it back on the charger after 18-19 hours with 25-35% left.

Will have to try it at home then, because it's not working at our office. We have a 'personal' wifi that we login to and it's not handing off to the watch when I turn off bluetooth. Likely that it won't allow a device that hasn't directly authenticated with. It's not one of those splash pages that you get when you login to a hotel but an actual U/P prompt when you connect with a pop-up from the system.

I used a Moto 360 v1 briefly with iPhone a year ago. It was a miserable experience. No custom watch faces and the stock ones were terrible. Worked well enough for notification mirroring but that's it. No interaction with apps at all. Was like using 10% of it compared to using it with Android.

Get an Apple watch. It's great. S0,1, or 2. Just don't go Wear on iOS.

I will bite, I'm interested in sleep tracking. Is there a way to do it natively or have to use an app? Hoping that the twenty minutes or so it ready in the morning is enough to chug along throughout the week. There's no native sleep tracking since Apple expects you to dock it at night but there's plenty of apps for it. It only really needs like one hour if charging total per day so you should be fine

Thanks, I picked up Sleep++ and trying that out. Seems to work pretty well.

I'm looking at some third-party activity tracking apps (Under Armour Record for a start) and am curious as to how much it interacts with the built in Activity app.

- I see the UA app can use the built-in HRM, but not the GPS. That's a restriction for all third party apps, yes?
- How will it behave when I complete a workout. Will it funnel all the important data to the activity app and notify my shared contacts? I have a bit of a challenge going with a friend so we like to see eachothers workouts/etc. Would I lose that capability?
- If it doesn't send the data to the activity app for alerting others, will the activity app pull on the data it records to calculate the calorie totals and other activity goals?

Appreciate any insights!
