I would, but I am so mentally unstable at this point that it would likely result in unfortunate headlines, criminal charges, and probably multiple hospitalisations due to poor reactions to the stress. There is a reason I got transferred to the disability services in December/January. It is best all round if I lay low.

Also, I am allergic to democracy sausages (No, seriously. A lot of manufacturers stuff them with onion powder and garlic, which cause me no end of digestive strife).

You can do some letter boxing! I have pretty bad social anxiety and worked 55 hours last week but I still managed to do some letterboxing and then force myself to say gently caress it and do some doorknocking too. Otherwise you could probably waste time reasonably replying to the weirdo creeps that troll greens posts on Facebook. Or just join the Greens if you aren't one and help by increasing the membership and hopefully being taken a tiny bit more seriously by some voters.

I'm vegetarian so I probably won't be enjoying a democracy sausage either!

And in reply to QM about using census data in door knocking, great! It was really hot and humid yesterday and I was nervous enough so having mostly easy houses as my first time has been good to get over the anxiety. Also had a few families and random strangers wave and smile which was nice.

Lol there is a house down the street plastered in posters for the labor state candidate as well as an old by-election labor poster. I dropped a leaflet for the greens candidate in the letterbox two days ago and today it was ripped up and littered all over their driveway and the street.

I love how this guy is basically admitting that café owners systematically pay "ethnics" (read: non-whites, I assume) below minimum wage, AND that he is scared of those same people.

They pay 'ethnics' $15 an hour flat rate off the books, no tax no super. Sometimes even less, so yeah great lets deregulate penalty rates because this industry has way too much regulation as it is!

Anyone know what rights someone on a student visa working more than 20 hours a week, off books under minimum wage actually has? I work with a couple of people who are employed through an agency which uses the fact these people are trying to support families, while studying and paying high tuition costs but who are only allowed to work 20 hours a week to completely exploit them. Obviously there is many issues with this but if one of these people were to complain would they have any grounds for an underpayment claim? or would the fact they work more than their allowed 20 hours a week just put them in the poo poo and get them deported?

Really breaks my heart to see poor men and women working 7am to 11pm on $16 an hour flat rate. The agency collects upwards of $25 an hour for them from the company that requests the workers. Pretty sure this agency supplies workers to a lot of the hospitality industry in Sydney, what can I do about this?

Call the ATO.

The hard part is that not all of the workers may be legal to work or reside in Australia. Calling that in is bound to get a few people deported. I know from experience as an "illegal" that they are probably pretty drat desperate. I worked at a job with horrible hours and pay and I was grateful for what money I could pull in. It's a sick depressing cycle. I lucked out and became a DJ which gave me enough money to hire the legal help I needed.

It's a hosed situation on your end. You're damned if you do and damned if you don't.

Is it much harder to get a work visa over a student visa? It's pretty horrible, it's not like they are doing it out of malice. They really don't help the already poor regulation of the industry though. I have reported them to the ATO online before (the agency not the workers) but maybe I need to call. I'd have no problem doing it if I knew they were all able to get back paid at least because that would be in the tens of thousands of unpaid wages.

I have no idea why you wouldn't just report the agency to the Fair Work Ombudsman or whoever and leave it at that.

My main concern is that the workers themselves will get into deep poo poo if there is an investigation. Also that they won't be back paid all the money these assholes have made off of their labour. It's not like I can do much anyway seeing as they've been operating for so long and have been getting away with it, I'm only one shitkicker after all. The best case scenario would be the workers getting back paid and then being financially safe enough to choose where to go from there, I don't think that will happen though and these people will end up unemployed or deported and their lives devastated.

Ideally I just need to find out if they can safely have a claim for underpayment so I can get the workers themselves to take them to court or if they find other genuine employment and can then claim underpayment but not get themselves deported by the fact they worked more than 20 hours a week while they were on student visas. I can't even get chefs who are australian citizens to take their employers to fair work for working 10-20 hours unpaid overtime a week though so what hope is there.

I met the socialist equality party in marrickville this morning, real nice bunch of people! I didn't realise I was a pro war pro capitalist right wing fucker for being a member of the greens but I'm glad they let me know!

Who knew the situation in Ukraine was such a serious issue in the upcoming nsw state election. More self appointed heroes on the working class woo. I would hate to see them communicate with the average member of the working class in this country if they're that rude to a socialist blue collar worker like me.

I honestly don't know why some people keep rats as pets, let alone possums.

Well they're really intelligent, friendly and cute while being the only pet you can really have when renting apartments in Sydney (easy to hide and they can have a good life without the outdoor access). They also only live around 3 years so it's not a long term commitment like a cat which helps when living arrangements and jobs for young renters aren't exactly stable.

More importantly Powershop is available in NSW finally so people should really look at changing from the big three electricity providers if they haven't yet. You should also be changing from the major banks to credit unions if you're still using them for some reason.

NSW Labor is disgusting, I really can't think of any reason why someone would vote for them over the Libs other than electricity privatisation and they aren't even arguing against that very well. They were never going to win the election, as long as we can pick up another Greens seat I'm happy. Ideally we get a hung parliament with 2 or 3 Greens holding balance of power but like that would ever happen.

Luke Foley has to be one of the most uninspiring politicians in recent memory, kicking NSW Labor into gear with a $100m tax break for the racing industry (not long before the 4corners investigation) and flubbing around on marriage equality until they realised it could cost them the new seat of Newtown. Oh and then flubbing around with westconnex playing whichever side suits them depending on the electorate they're speaking to.

Although throwing the Nationals out of Ballina is a definitely a good thing.

Anecdotally the Greens have had a much better ground game in Newtown, I see them around all the time door knocking. The only Labor supporters I've seen just stand at the station and talk to each other.

Yeah this is my first election volunteering but the greens have been everywhere in the inner west. Really good effort, lots of people prepolling, doorknocking, on the phones and letterboxing. It's a nice feeling having so many people working together for shared beliefs. Even the very few labor people I have met (only at pre poll) have been really friendly and recognise the greens are a good bunch of people. I've probably been incredibly lucky with my experiences though.

The billboard placement has been excellent around the innerwest and city, money well spent. The Greens have definitely been raising awareness and getting some people to actually stop and think about politics for a few minutes which is the most important thing imo.

I don't see how that is legal. Should have photographed them and called the cops.

I have to say that thus far I am very disappointed in the Greens efforts in Macquarie Park. The only contact thus far is a leaflet left in my letterbox a couple of weeks ago (To be fair, it wasn't a terrible leaflet, but still). It is, in fact, the first marketing material I recall seeing from the Greens outside of a polling booth since I moved back to Australia a decade ago.

Why do the Greens hate Ryde? I mean, besides all the other good reasons to hate it. We have Echidnas, Possums, Fruit bats, and as of at least a week ago, a Powerful Owl (The hooting... the hooting!). All these things should spur greater investment by the Greens, but instead we are ignored and left to the tender mercies of the Liberals.

It is such a shame.

Are you a Green living in Macquarie park? They might not have enough volunteers and members in the area. From what I've seen and heard it's all very grassroots which is why they can do so much in the inner west - there are loads of greens and volunteers.

I don't think they have anywhere near the resources of the major parties because of donation policy and ideals so they are very dependant on local groups. I'm very new so I could be talking out of my rear end. I'm sure QM has talked about this before.

Where were labor tearing down posters? That is really scummy and should be filmed and documented.

Don't forget those who work nightshifts either, everyone who doesn't work 9-5 Monday to Friday just got a pay cut. Nightshift penalty rates are extremely important, not many people appreciate how much it can gently caress up your life working opposite hours to everybody else. Having to work weekends is bad enough but waking up after your partner goes to work and getting home after they are in bed, to use the most common example really really sucks.

Pickled Tink are you able to have asafoetida? A lot of South Indians use it as a replacement for onion/garlic for religious reasons, it's very tasty and you could broaden out with some South Indian dishes if you want more variety in your food but can't have the base of garlic/onion. South Indian food is healthy, tasty and cheap, my second of two meals a day as a student would usually be a homemade daal.

I'm intrigued by a couple of things in that post. I'd never heard of asafoetida or people from South India unable to eat some vegetables for religious reasons.

Mind blown a little.

I think it's also called hing, it used to be hard to find here in Sydney but now some indian and arabic stores sell it. Extremely potent smelling stuff that comes in a little white container, you need to keep it sealed in a ziplock bag or other air tight container otherwise the smell kind of overpowers the cupboard/draw you keep it in. Really tasty though and it does add a good unique flavour to things.

Pickled Tink, just join the Greens they don't make you do anything. You might get a call when you join up and maybe get on the mailing list but they'll never push or expect anything from you. You could also do letter boxing which is fun and you won't have to interact with anybody.

Same for me until the election. Honestly my local branch seem fine and really nice, the woman I spoke to to organise HTVs was extremely friendly and reasonable. It's the surrounding electorates (looking at you Newtown and Balmain) who seem to think that because they might actually win they have the right to steal everybody else's volunteers and harrass anyone who might possible help them out.

God bless Summer Hill I guess. I get emails from Newtown but I've only had a few calls in response to me registering for volunteering on the website from Summer Hill. I definitely see them being disorganised, it took me awhile to get arranged to volunteer and I never got to hand out at train stations in summer hill despite asking and speaking on the phone about it. The summer hill greens have always been super friendly and appreciative of what I've done which is great for me because now I'll probably make more effort to go to meetings and be involved with them. Summer Hill is also a great electorate that I love living and working in so I enjoy meeting more of the community here whereas doorknocking in Newtown was nice but I try to avoid the area.

Hopefully they get their poo poo together in the big gap from Sunday to the federal election. There seem to be a few places things could tighten up and improve. Anyone going to the NSW Greens election party Saturday?

I can't believe it. FOUR SEATS and not only that but there are now many seats where the Greens are running second to the major parties. Good job NSW.
