It's pretty untrue to say that people were really excited to have Mearls and Cook on the team for 5th Edition, the tone was much more "Well maybe they learned something and this won't be terrible." Then when Monte Cook became the moon and the design got worse everyone had a good laugh about how no one could have guessed that it was Cook keeping the game from becoming 3.X 2: Electric Boogaloo.
