Notable content mods released for Assetto Corsa as of May 2015: 1.1 Ready Mods Cars:
Tracks: (Tarmac circuit unless otherwise noted)
Broken Mods Cars: There are two things that need to be updated to make these old car mods work in 1.1: Aeros: Open aero.ini in the car's data folder and remove the entire block with the [DATA] header and change VERSION under [HEADER] to be VERSION=2. Sound: Copy another (hopefully similar sounding) car's GUIDs.txt and .bank file from their sfx folder into the sfx folder of the car to be updated. Then replace the name of the .bank file and every reference in the GUIDs.txt with the folder name of the car being updated. If the car already has a GUIDs.txt and .bank file, then this likely isn't necessary.
There's tonnes more mods out there if you know what you're looking for. Jehde fucked around with this message at 03:55 on Jul 1, 2015 |

Another big part of it is just the complete lack of g-forces exerted. Something like this would help with that: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sFCRh-anfRg But even with a ridiculuous set up like that, simulation will never match reality.

365 Nog Hogger posted:I gave up on RSRBR each time I tried to get it working right. Couldn't ever get my G27+shifter to work right, the cameras blow and I couldn't figure out the camera-hack thing. Everything felt really floaty too, just because it's rally doesn't mean tires don't sometimes... grip. The "Next Gen Physics" pack of the latest version really helps with that floaty aspect. No matter how much you mod RBR though, it's still old as hell. Hopefully a new rally sim will come eventually.

Don't know if anyone else noticed, I just noticed myself: The Dream Pack DLC for Assetto Corsa is already up for pre-order with a 33% discount. $15 is cheaper than I was expecting the pack to be, especially considering it includes the laser-scanned Nordschleife.

Assetto Corsa is fantastic and is still the game I play the most on Steam. Different people expect different things from their racing simulators. A lot of people want things like structure, competition (either online or offline), and variables to tweak the track with to make as adverse conditions as possible, and that’s totally understandable. What I want in a sim is extremely tight physics that I can get in tune with that make it exhilarating to take corners as fast as I can, and Assetto Corsa excels at this. I just pick a favourite car and a favourite track and set myself laptime goals. Previously it was the Ferrari 288 GTO around Karelia in a minute, now I’m trying to get around Monza in 1:30 with the Lotus 49. It might just be because I’m a rally fan, but I really couldn’t care to have more cars on the track. When I just want to drive a certain car around a certain track, AC will be my go to for a while. Assetto Corsa can be pretty lacking in content, more so their distribution of content is super weird with having dozens of Lotuses and BMWs but barely anything else. AC is only 1.0 though, they’ve said repeatedly that 1.0 only means release. They plan to keep patching in cars, tracks and features for a while yet. The first DLC is going to drop this tuesday that will add 10 completely new cars, but the real strength of AC will always be its mods, because there’s a lot of good ones out there. A lot of great WIP mods that have yet to be released too, I’m particularly looking forward to the Sport Quattro and the two Porsche mods. tl;dr: If you like hotlapping and mods, AC is the best. All that being said, Assetto Corsa doesn’t scratch the itch I have for a racing game where you go through a career and buy your cars. Project CARS should scratch that itch a lot better so I look forward to it for that. Mods broke a lot in the early access days of AC because they kept messing with the sound engine, but it's been reliable lately. It's just extracting an archive to the content/cars or content/tracks folder. Edit: Didn't realize URD was releasing that Audi for free, adding it to the list. 365 Nog Hogger posted:1. Custom PP filters. People have been sharing them on the official forums and I think there are a few on RaceDepartment, but they get involved real fast, with custom weather and colorcurve ini's. This. AC's extensive modding also applies to the post-process filtering. You can find people sharing their PP filters in the screenshot thread sometimes, but as mentioned, it can be a bit of a mess. And yeah, AC can look good if you get it just right, but really the graphics engine is severely lacking, it is a small studio afterall. Notably the engine only supports a single light source, so night racing likely won't be a thing for AC, maybe it will be for AC2.

The Dream Pack for AC is out! You may have to restart Steam to get it to download. The McLaren F1 GTR and Alfa GTA are both heaps of fun. Also the track map icon for the Nurburgring includes the Sudschleife. Edit: Mod cars seem to be broken again. Jehde fucked around with this message at 19:05 on Mar 11, 2015 |

Good find! Doesn't seem to work for all mods unfortuantely, notably the 288 GTO. Some tracks got messed up too, mainly the offroad type ones. The solution for these are to delete these two lines (or similar) from data/surfaces.ini WAV=gravel.wav WAV_PITCH=1.3

If you're sim racing I think it's worth learning how/when to change gears, adds a lot more to the experience. I taught myself how to shift (terribly) thanks to Colin McRae style pacenotes being super intuitive. Ever since, I've wanted every game with worthwhile car physics to have a manual option, especially GTA V which notably doesn't have the option.

Yeah I impulse bought the gently caress out of this. It's already pretty great. I wouldn't quite call it RBR levels of sim, but it definitely feels a bit more sim-like than previous Dirt games, feels kinda in between the two. Tracks are longer, narrower, and twistier than Dirt 3, and there's already a bunch for the 3 launch locations. Also all the cars from Dirt 3 are included, so lots of stuff to play with already. Weather effects are already in, damage, it's all there. Except yeah pacenotes are notably missing for whatever reason. Kinda wish there was a slider to reduce the washed out effect. I will say you can get a really good feel for momentum and find yourself flying around corners really satisfyingly in no time. Jehde fucked around with this message at 01:06 on Apr 28, 2015 |

Unless you're really into Dirt/rally-sim, hold off. Most goon ITT will probably get the most out of Project CARS instead. Codemasters did include in their little early access FAQ thing that they will raise the price as it progresses through development, so if you want in cheap on the ground floor, now's the time. Unfortunately I am really into Dirt/rally/sim so I couldn't not buy it, but fortunately it does scratch the itch really drat well. I can't wait until they fix the pacenotes and I finally have my ultimate rally sim, no more need for Dirt 3 or RSRBR. Just to add a bit more about where Dirt Rally fits in with rally sim: How Dirt Rally approaches simulation is pretty different from NGP in RSRBR. RSRBR tends to follow the sim trope of being unrealistically difficult, Dirt Rally feels a lot more "grounded". The most obvious difference is the amount of grip you get. In RSRBR, you're constantly sliding around, gravel feels more like ice than anything. However in Dirt Rally you feel like you have even too much grip at times, you can brake way later and take corners at speeds you think you shouldn't be able to. I keep seeing the insane grip levels (whether realistic or not) as a common complaint though, so we'll see how Dirt Rally changes as it goes on. VVV You mean you don't get annoyed at having only a centimetre of wiggle room for steering? I know I sure as hell do. Jehde fucked around with this message at 23:56 on Apr 28, 2015 |

For FWD: The standard method seems to be just using the handbrake to get a slide going, but this requires getting the weight transfer just right in order to come out clean, also usually means your exit speed will be pretty low. I found out that left foot braking can work pretty well for wider hairpins, just balance the brake and throttle as you turn into the hairpin and you'll feel it nudge around pretty smoothly, you'll get a feel for it. In general there's different kinds of hairpins where different techniques work best.

Xenoid posted:How good is Dirt? It's not too expensive yet but I'm very wary of getting burned on games, especially since Codemasters doesn't have a great history of making sim type games. Y'all seem to be liking it and the reviews on Steam are Very Positive so that is moving me into the 'buy' camp but I seem to need a bit more push. I ask because I was thinking of buying P:C but that one is definitely an expensive game to be buying. Think of it less as Codemasters trying to push their usual "the most realistic experience yet!" spiel (even though they are) and more as them starting a community driven rally sim, a "Project Rally" if you will. If you want in on the low price-point, now is the time to buy because they will raise the price as development progresses. There's actually an incredible amount of content and polish already for an early access title. The only caveats are that the 36 stages to start are only across 3 locations, so it can get a bit repetitive; and the FFB for wheels still seems to be under heavy development, I just use an xbox 360 controller so I wouldn't really know. There is still already a lot to do though, from goon rallies and daily challenges to the usual car unlocking career progression. All that being said though, I still maintain that most goons ITT will get more out of pCARS in general. pCARS will be the most "complete" experience any racing game has had in a while, and I figure most goons ITT prefer circuit racing over rally racing. If you are rally nut though, buy the Dirt game. You might wanna wait until they fix the FFB if you use a wheel though. Jehde fucked around with this message at 18:31 on May 2, 2015 |

There's also multiple weather/time settings for each stage. You can set it to be snowing for every Monte Carlo stage I'm pretty sure. I haven't seen the whole windscreen smash yet though, I used to love the effect of the snow flooding in to the car in Dirt 3. I can't wait for the Finland and Sweden expansions. The only other rally I'd like to see added back that they haven't confirmed is the safari rally.
