Problem description: I put together a pc for a friend after she bought all her parts on black friday. It worked fine for a month then got the infinite windows restart/repairing loop. I reinstalled 8.1 from a flash drive instead of using the disc and it was fine again for another month, now it's been freezing/crashing constantly at seemingly random times, sometimes just opening a web page and sometimes after playing Guild Wars 2 for several hours. Each time the report says that either none of the dns servers responded or the server did not register with DCOM within the required time out. I don't know poo poo about software stuff so I googled both these but all the results are just talking about their internet not working rather than their pc crashing so I dunno how relevant it is.

Attempted fixes: Wiped the hard drive/reinstalled windows several times both from the cd and from a flash drive, checked the temperatures of the cpu, gpu, etc. Googled a bunch of poo poo. I would like to just pull every piece out one at a time and run it for a while but I'm only over their once a week or two and she doesn't want to touch any of the hardware stuff herself.

Recent changes: Whole things new and trouble started after a month each time.

Check HD health using the portable zip edition of CDI: http://crystalmark.info/download/index-e.html

Verify it's using the latest BIOS:
http://www.msi.com/support/mb/H81ME33.html#down-bios

Do a scan overnight using memtest to check RAM: http://www.memtest.org/

If those three things pass with no issues I'd try taking the GPU out and using the onboard video temporarily.

PS The Corsair CX line of PSUs does not have the best reputation so it may come to the point of trying another one.

I'll forward this all to her, thanks.

Not updating my bios gave me issues with my computer when I first built it so I can't believe I didn't think about that until now. And yeah I'm aware the cx psus aren't liked, especially around here; I always thought that was more a longevity issue than a power delivery issue, though.

Okay, so I updated the bios and ran crystal disc on her computer. It hasn't crashed or frozen since I've been using it but it usually doesn't happen that quickly anyway so I don't know if flashing the bios helped or not. According to crystal disc, the hdd might have issues.

Is this something that's fixable, or am I going to have to RMA the harddrive to seagate?

The HD is definitely beginning to fail (not fixable). So get any important files off that drive and RMA it/replace it.

It's a good bet that that's the reason for the freezing/crashing.

edit: that HD barely has any use too. Not even 1,000 hours.

Was that used as an external drive or has she just been turning the computer on/off a ton? Power on count seems awfully high.

drat, that's good to finally have a solid cause but it's her only hard drive so she'll be desktopless during the whole rma. I just put it together for her at the end of November since she bought all the parts on black friday, so yeah it has barely seen any use. The issues with the disc install of Windows 8.1 meant it had to be hard shut down a shitload of times because it would just hang infinitely on restart, which had to happen a lot while trying to fix the problem. Plus the pc crashing and needing to be shut down/turned back on 1-3 times a day recently.

Anyways, thank you very much Zogo! If you'd like a new av cert or something just let me know.

No problem. If you wanted to buy something I could always use a "not-for-profit forums banner ad" certificate.

I went to get the cert but it's not letting me finish the transaction :saddowns: I'll try again in a while and pm you with it if I can get it to work so this thread can dissappear.
