I wish I could play along, but right now after a clean install of enemy within on a new computer, adding Long War makes the game freeze and crash upon startup at the 'loading user settings' bit. Reinstalling anything and everything does gently caress all, so bleh. Play badly for me!

I'll be happy to turn you into a SHIV. Looking at all the changes to meld and overall costs I might go shivs long before I think about MECs, because the foundry projects will be much more important, and I'll need some units to tank. I used to avoid shivs because of the opportunity cost.

SHIVs seem pretty useful in Long War. They don't panic, unlike every rookie forever and always, and they don't fatigue. Plus using them as half cover is neat. Not something to bring on every mission, but at least until you get MEC an alloy SHIV can be pretty useful in certain situations.

Mission 2 and Base Management 2

Nothing too special about this mission. It does highlight the mod using drones as independent soldiers/pods, rather than as support for larger mechanical enemies. Drones have a pretty high amount of damage resistance in a small package (I think early game is 1.5, meaning they have a 100% chance of resisting 1 damage, and 50% chance of resisting 1 additional damage), and given they're flying enemies they can be pretty nightmarish and tough to hit. They were made a lot more aggressive in beta 15 - something I'm still getting used to. In prior iterations they would typically randomly flit around, though they were still pretty dangerous.

I have 73 volunteers so far. Having 90 people in XCOM is not unheard of (my last beta 14 campaign had around 98 soldiers). That said, there's a difference between having 98 soldiers and keeping 98 soldiers in rotation. I think everyone will have some screen time, but its going to be the first 30, maybe, that will be 'A' soldiers.

Like video 1, the voice audio isn't really up to the standard I want. I fix this in video 3, but then I have some other audio issue in that video :yayclod: ! Funny how after about 10 nearly flawless practice videos I have with Kidneyman, new issues crop up I never even thought would exist. I did what I could to minimize the effects.

Drones are scary as gently caress when all you have is PFCs and maybe a handful of fatigued specialists. The standard assault rifle does 3-5 damage, and the drone's armor will nullify 1 point of that (assuming the wiki is up to date for b15, they start off with 1.0 DR and max out at 2.0). Being able to fly means that they can essentially be in light cover whenever the hell they feel like it, and they definitely exploit that advantage by brazenly charging your troops to flank them. Pretty much the only quick and reliable ways to deal with them early on are either with a rocket or a shotgun, both of which require specialist troops.

They're pretty decent until enemy defense scales way too loving high for them to hit anything. Because Long War removed their inherent aim bonus and actually toned down some of the upgrades you could get in EW that made them pretty good (repair servos especially).

You could probably SHIV-Com your way through to… October before being overwhelmed though. But even Alloy SHIVs are going to be two or three shot at that point, and they aren't going to be dodging poo poo.

I want to play long war I really do. But it crashes on startup at the 'loading user settings' and hangs. None of the troubleshooting guide tips work and its so frustrating. :(

SHIVcom isn't viable, but gently caress if it isn't great. You'd be surprised how often the disposable little bots will save your veteran soldier's asses by giving no fucks and flanking aliens that have them dead to rights.

So i know it's called Long War for a reason. But when can we roughly expect to be done? In a normal game i always manged to finish around around Sep-Oct-ish.

I only ask because of all the various LW stuff I've seen ive never seen one that was ever near an ending.

Late into the second year at the absolute earliest. You aren't getting anything like high tier psychic powers, firestorms or plasma weapons until way into the second year and the resource/psi exp grind is going to be a thing.

Count on roughly eight missions a month, plus a few special things (Base Assault/Exalt Base etc) and you're probably looking at 200ish mission? If you're willing to go into the finale with stuff that isn't absolutely the best you can probably shave three months or so off of that.

Enemies will scale for 960 days.

Somebody call for an ant?

So some basic calculations later assuming about an hour a mission, that would make total play time roughly 8 days straight. :aaa:

Long war is fun to watch, but boy is it not for me as far as playing it goes. Would love it if some of their hud mods got separated/reverse engineered so I could put them in the base game though.

Consider I have the magic of video editing on my side. The amount of action in a particular mission can be highlighted. But yes, if things go very well a campaign can be finished in April (the next in-game year). Also, near the end of the game if I'm just waiting on stuff I can decide to skip missions. The last campaign I finished I skipped a month and a half worth of missions just to get things built and ready for the final mission.

And you're leveling a lot more dudes than the like, 6 or 7 from base game, so that's a helper. I can't really complain about the length given the amount of time I've sunk into the base game, and the fact that there's an option for a shorter game if you want it.

Yes. In Long War it is possible to destroy a UFO without a crash site. If you destroy a UFO, you get 'bounty', which varies based on the UFO type ($100 for a scout, for example). This is great for the late game, but in the early game you want as many crash sites as possible. It can be a run killer when you do nothing but destroy UFOs for the first two months because you miss out on the training and raw materials. Avalanche missiles do a lot of damage to small scouts compared to sting ray missiles (which are designed for 'armored' UFOs, which we have not seen yet), so they're a lot more likely to destroy a UFO. To maximize the crash sites, I try to hit the UFO once with an Avalanche missile, then finish it off with sting ray missiles, thus increasing the chance of getting a crash site. This has the side benefit of training up my sting ray interceptors, which are better versus satellite hunters.

What I failed to realize at the time of the recording, is that by having my first satellite in Mexico I don't have as much time to scramble the interceptors. A UFO that is more than 50% damaged will abandon its mission and run away (there are extra explosion effects so you know a UFO is 50% damaged). I'm used to the US start, which due to positioning of the air base makes it easier to send up two interceptors.

So my heart was in the right place, but next time I'll have to be smarter about this.

Edit: The good news is that because I got the UFO to 50% health it didn't complete its mission anyway, so its just as good as shooting it down in some strategic aspects.

Edit2: Pilots receive experience in Long War for kills, this affects their chance to hit. I'll be sure to show that off next time we record.
