scp has encryption.

tar has compression, moves everything as a single file, and has the power of rms

no authentication or session management. but if you are having slow speeds with windows file sharing your computer is probably broken or you're using samba which doesn't work.

it's because the client doesn't have to get the list of files and ask for each one separately, and bzip2 (tar j) is the superior compression algorithm

Also i tried to copy a folder onto a usb stick the other day but it had so many funky symlinks and poo poo that i think cp got into some kind of loop

so i did like i should have and tarred it up first, worked in a fraction of teh time
