ftp has overhead for each file since its a new session. scp has encryption. tar has compression, moves everything as a single file, and has the power of rms

Also i tried to copy a folder onto a usb stick the other day but it had so many funky symlinks and poo poo that i think cp got into some kind of loop so i did like i should have and tarred it up first, worked in a fraction of teh time
