imgur.com/blog/2014/10/09/introducing-gifv posted:GIFs are no longer about .GIFs–the culture of the GIF now trumps the file format. With Project GIFV, Imgur is reimagining the looping GIF video with all the richness it deserves as a key piece of Internet culture. Whats not to like. You save bandwidth. You don't lose any functionality. If a site doesn't support gifv, you can just link directly to the gif. Gifv rules

tbh i read this and immedaitely decided to post but then read the sig again and was placated enough to say that why is gifv not inlined in sa yet

# ? Mar 17, 2015 04:45 |

if you would like, I have done a userscript you can use to inline them (not gplv3, but it is open sores)

gifv is literally just webm like, the server straight up serves a .webm imgur is jealous of gfycat's success

not a bad thing! websites that support webms can support gifv in the exact same way, all thats needed is s/.gifv/.webm/ in teh url

du -hast posted:why is it that chome cant render gifs for poo poo but firefail can? its loving weird and i demand an explanation I can't find the bug reports for some reason and I can't be assed to keep looking but iirc: it has something to do with the gif decoder locking up the render thread while it's decoding, so rendering anything in that tab slows to a crawl until the gif decoder is done. defective by design

of course with firefox the bottleneck is download speed and streaming a 5mb webm is way faster than downloading a 50mb gif, even on fast broadband

gently caress I think it was a goon project? forget what it's called but it was actually just an svg with jpegs embedded so it didn't need a browser plugin

i thought webm was vp9 codec or whatever "not h.264, nope, no patents infringed here, no sir!" H.264 knockoff Google was trying to get everyone on board with a while back, while .gifv is just an mp4 and thus uses h.264 codec
|
# ? Mar 17, 2015 10:21 |

i guess they do webm or mp4 on the fly so webm for lovely browsers made by freetards and google, mp4 for good browsers.
