It's that time of year again Goons. March Matness. The NCAA Division 1 wrestling championships start on Thursday, March 19th in St. Louis, Missouri. The event runs for three days and ends with the finals on Saturday evening. Chances are pretty good that at least one wrestler from where you went to school is competing.

ESPN will have every match, every round streamed live on ESPN3. In addition, they'll have at least a few mats live on actual TV. Here's the broadcast schedule, which is also the tournament schedule. All times are Eastern.

The current top teams according to Intermat:
1. Iowa
2. Missouri
3. Ohio State
4. Minnesota
5. Cornell
6. Oklahoma State
7t. Penn State
7t. Virginia Tech
9. Edinburo
10. Illinois
11. Iowa State

A full list of qualifiers can be found here

Championship Website is here

The big storyline this year is Logan Stieber from Ohio State going for his 4th consecutive title.

He's the favorite at 141. Can anyone knock him off the top of the podium?

Some other storylines:

Jesse Delgado from Illinois is the two time returning champion at 125. But he's been hobbled by shoulder injuries all year and only wrestled a handful of matches. At the Big Ten Tournament a few weeks ago he wrestled just enough to solidify his qualification to NCAAs and then injury defaulted out of the tournament. Can the champ fight through injury to claim his third title?

Alex Dieringer from Oklahoma State is the heavy, heavy, heavy favorite at 165. Can he destroy everyone in his path on his way to a second title?

The Hawkeyes have a streak of some 20+ years of having at least one wrestler make the finals. But this year they have nobody seeded in the top two. Will they be watching from the stands on Saturday night?
I certainly hope so, gently caress the Hawkeyes

And from a team perspective, there is no clear favorite. There are three teams with legitimate shots at the title. Will Iowa maintain their dominance? Will Ohio State end up on top? Will Missouri, the lone wrestling school in the SEC, take the title away from Big Ten country? Or will a darkhorse like Minnesota or Cornell rise to the top?

Quick breakdown of each session:
Session 1: 33 wrestlers at each weight. So 1 pigtail match and then a full set of 16 matches. There are usually a mix of evenly matched guys and horribly overmatched guys who are just happy to be there. This year for the first time they seeded all the way to 16 instead of 12 as they had in the past. That should cut down on the number of upsets but there is still always a few surprises in the first round. 33 wrestlers enter, 33 wrestlers leave.

Session 2: On the championship side of the bracket you start to have seeded guys compete against each other. So more upsets happen, but the top seeds are still generally facing guys they outmatch, so most of the upsets you see here will be of the 11 over 6, 8 over 9 type variety. On the consolation side you have 1 pigtail and 8 elimination matches. 33 wrestlers enter, 24 wrestlers leave.

Session 3: Championship quarterfinals. These tend to be great matches and this is where the most interesting upsets tend to happen as elite guys square off. Always lots of good action. On the consolation side you have two rounds. The losers from the championship round on Thursday night take on the winners of the consolation round from Thursday night. This is where talented guys with unlucky draws start to go home. The next round is the winners of those matches going at it. By the time this is done there are always multiple seeded wrestlers going home and unseeded guys making runs deep into the tournament. 24 wrestlers enter, 12 wrestlers leave.

Session 4: The "Round of 12". This, in my opinion, is the best round of the tournament. On the championship side a win places you in the finals. On the consolation side a win assures you a top 8 finish and All American status. If anything, the pressure in this round is greater than the pressure in the finals. Everybody left is an ultra talented (or ultra lucky) wrestler and nobody wants to get this far and go home empty handed. After the R12 the consolation bracket will have another round to determine who will stay alive for 3rd place and who will be going into the 7th place match. But honestly that only really matters for team points. Its getting to that point that matters. 12 wrestlers enter, 8 All Americans leave.

Session 5: The consolation medal rounds. The losers from the championship semifinals the night before take on the winners of the consolation bracket with a spot in the 3rd place match on the line. Losers of these matches go into the 5th place match. Today is purely about pride and team points, the pressure is off. This can be fun to watch because some guys will really open up their game now that they don't have as much to lose while others will be devastated by not being in the finals and just stand there getting their rear end kicked. Nobody is eliminated here, they just determine how high they are going to be standing on the podium. 6 wrestlers enter, 6 placewinners leave.

Session 6: The finals. 2 wrestlers enter, 1 champion leaves.

As with years past, I'm going to run a Fantasy Wrestling pool again this year(just for forum bragging rights). Here's how it works:

You choose ten guys to form your team
You have a limit of one wrestler at each weight
You have a limit of one wrestler of any seed (only one #1 seed, one #2 seed, etc...). 11-16 seeds and unseeded guys are fair game with no limit

The scoring will be by the same scoring rules the NCAA uses for the tournament:

Scoring:
Placement points:
  • 1st place: 16 points
  • 2nd place: 12 points
  • 3rd place: 10 points
  • 4th place: 9 points
  • 5th place: 7 points
  • 6th place: 6 points
  • 7th place: 4 points
  • 8th place: 3 points

Advancement points:
  • Each advancement in the championship bracket is worth 1 point
  • Each advancement in the consolation bracket is worth .5 points
  • Each fall, forfeit, default, disqualification: 2 extra points
  • Each tech fall (w/ near fall points): 1.5 extra points
  • Each tech fall (w/o near fall points): 1 extra point
  • Each major decision: 1 extra point

Basically you want to pick guys that not only will win, but will win big. I'll compile all the scoring and update it between rounds. Feel free to ask questions if you are unsure how it works.

Here are the top 10 seeds at each weight:
code:
+--------+------+------------------------+----------------------+
| WEIGHT | Seed | Wrestler | School |
+--------+------+------------------------+----------------------+

I have not seen much wrestling this year other than reading the Lehigh sports site. What's up with Dylan Ness? Was he hurt all year or he's just not that good?

Isaiah Martinez, freshman for Illinois, has destroyed just about everybody this year at 157. He beat Ness 12-5 in the Big Ten finals a couple weeks ago.

It's amazing what they can do with computers these days.

Not really a championship question here, but is there any chance Mizzou would come back to the Big 12 in wrestling only? They are crushing the MAC, and it seems like such a waste. Not sure if the Big 12 would let them back considering they left, but just a thought.

No way the Big XII would let them back in anytime soon. Even though it would make a lot of sense for the reasons you mentioned. The Big XII is actually probably going to be adding the Western Wrestling Conference members (North Dakota State, South Dakota State, Wyoming, Air Force, Northern Colorado, Utah Valley) as affiliate members for Wrestling going forward.

But Northern Iowa and Missouri both are in year three of five year contracts with the MAC. So who knows what'll happen in two years.

Also this should be a really close team race right? We should guess on that as well, I think Ohio State is way overdue to win a championship.

As long as Iowa doesn't win I'm down. Though I'm pulling for Missouri or Cornell because I'd rather it went to a non-Big Ten school.

With 4 1/2 entries so far, I might actually break the top three this year.

I don't know too much about NCAA wrestling aside from it producing national treasures Ben Askren and Brock Lesnar and national rear end in a top hat Matt Hughes.

So here's a list based on names plus Alex Dieringer because you built him up as a monster in the OP. Also his name isn't bad.

125 | 3 | Joey Dance | Virginia Tech
133 | 4 | Johnni DiJulius | Ohio State
141 | 8 | Geo Martinez | Boise State
149 | 7 | Sal Mastriani | Virginia Tech
157 | 2 | Brian Realbuto | Cornell
165 | 1 | Alex Dieringer | Oklahoma State
174 | 5 | Blaise Butler | Virginia
184 | 6 | Hayden Zillmer | North Dakota State
197 | 9 | Jace Bennett | Cornell
285 | 10 | Ty Walz | Virginia Tech

If you prefer stick figures, low latency, and being confused about what is going on, here's a link to Trackwrestling's coverage. While their live match coverage can leave a lot to be desired compared to ESPN3 streams, they'll have updated brackets and team scores kept constantly updated.

Man Sabatello vs Synon was intense on mat 8. I really really wanted Synon to win for the team race since Okie State isn't even close and gently caress Tom Brands.

Lots of upsets early, too.

Sabatello has an ISU guy up next so I hope he's good and tired.

Speaking team race. Dwieza, the 5 seed at 141, just went down 5-3 to an unseeded guy. That'll hurt Iowa a lot

Oh my God Hunter Stieber on mat 2. He can't even lift his arms after lasting like a 1 minute almost being pinned and his elbows had to be on fire. Poor guy, too tough for his own good. :smith:

Yeah, ISU's 149 pounder isn't much better. He hurt his shoulder bad at Big XIIs and then got a bad draw. His shoulder popped out midmatch today and he was able to finish the match but basically only had one arm for most of it and took a loss.
