Seriously, who saw this coming? For anybody unsure about this, this is a new iteration of the hockey management simulation series by the Football Manager guys and not the Out of the Park Baseball guys (i.e. it's good and not bad). Buy it on Steam here, it's only $12 until April 9th at which point it'll go back to the $15 full price, and price increases have been promised as it comes along further in early access. Despite this it seems fairly complete as is, and only really seems to need bug fixing/rebalancing, maybe some more flavor stuff, and some streamlining of the interface but hey it's a spreadsheet game so it's to be expected that it's kind of confusing to navigate, and at least menus don't take five minutes to load which already makes it less tedious than Be A GM mode in NHL 14. I don't have any tips because I'm a first time player and just as clueless as most of you, but hey here's a link to download a database that will let you have real world players, teams, and leagues (post-trade deadline: http://www.ehmtheblueline.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=23&t=13591 Here's a link to download opening night rosters: http://www.ehmtheblueline.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=23&t=13968 Unless you want to play with fictional players on nameless teams in generic leagues (albeit almost all clearly mapped to real world equivalents) you'll want this, since SI have skimped out on getting official league licenses for the time being to save development costs. If you want logos, facepacks, and other aesthetic mods to add to the experience you'll need to register an account at http://www.ehmtheblueline.com/forums/index.php since they're not viewable to guests. I'll try and keep the OP updated with any other useful guides, databases, and effortposts as I find them or people post them. Hell yeah EHM is back! I played around with it a bit over the last couple days, and it's further from a finished product than I had hoped. I've had a number of instances of 3 games in 3 days in the NHL which is a pretty basic scheduling error, and my team (the Canucks) managed to lose 18 consecutive games in regulation despite the fact that I'm a pretty experienced player of the game who knows how to set tactics etc. Teams also regularly win games 7 or 8 -1, and defencemen barely put up points. Those sorta things kinda kill the immersion for me. Overall it feels largely the same as 2007, I'm not noticing any real additions that I'm using yet. Draft eligible prospects seem seriously underrated (McDavid is getting barely a PPG in the OHL for me and most of his stats are red), but overall scouting seems better. At the very least, things seem a little less arbitrary. Injuries seem to occur at a realistic level, and individual scoring totals for forwards seem appropriate (the 1.5PPG days for the best players seem to be gone which is nice, although scoring as a whole is up from reality). Trade logic is loads better (no more getting Crosby for a package of picks and prospects), although the ability to retain salary in trades and offer partial NTCs is a glaring omission given the financials of today's NHL. It's a work in progress, but most of the issues I have with it so far have been noted by tons of people and SI is working to correct them. This isn't quite as polished as EHM 2007, but it's an alpha build so I'm hardly surprised. It's a factor of a thousand better than that hunk of crap FHM. It'll be a while before I start pouring days of my life into it again I think.

That stuff would also destroy my immersion, but is it worth it for 12 bucks to hope that they'll fix all that? Also anyone thinking of creating a 30 team thread; make sure you have the time for it. The 15 team one I did a few years back was a nightmare, but still tons of fun.

There's no way I'm jumping in on a half-assed product after FHM. Even if it's SI, they're obviously hedging their bets by going with a cheap early release and not even having an NHL license. If they show some commitment I might hop on board.

I'm nitpicking because I love the series so much. It's a first release, if you expect a perfected game then you're going to be disappointed. However, scheduling and scoring issues aside it plays as well as EHM2007 (essentially identically). I haven't experienced any crashes or game breaking bugs, it runs smoothly and fairly quickly and all the features from 2007 are already there. It's essentially a completed beta, it's really only an update or two away from being finished.

I can demote players to ahl/echl but that's the end of it. I've never played this game and it's kinda confusing. I finished my second year and made the second round of the playoffs this time (only the first round last year). The whole first season I didn't know you could send scouts on assignment, so that was basically wasted!

You only manage the team you are in control of, selecting a higher detail level for a particular league just increasing the amount of information the game reports provides.

The old dbs are compatible, right? If so, does anyone have a link for the best/most recent roster update? I think the last few good ones had players ages adjusted for a present-day patch so I'm not sure if those would work.

So far the only difference I've noticed (besides it being more difficult to navigate) is the ability to hide attributes to make it more challenging. Is there anything I'm missing? Also does online multiplayer finally work yet in this version?

I would be in too. Yeah scoring is way too high, freakin Alexander Semin led the league with 65 goals in my first year for some reason too

What db are you guys using? I'm using the one Hockles linked and at the trade deadline of my first year, it doesn't look like the league will have a single 50 goal scorer.

One thing I wish EHM had that FHM does is the ability to create your own league.

I will give it a go, if it's more realistic. Also, is Anthony Duclair Coyotes property in this one because in the first year of my other game, the Kings signed him. EDIT: Are you sure it's different? Brodeurs Nanny fucked around with this message at 03:15 on Mar 29, 2015 |

A 30 man league is something that sounds cool, but if I'm honest with myself I wouldn't play it the required amount. Also I don't really know what I'm doing still

I'd be totally in for a 30-man "play free agency and the draft" league and totally, violently out for playing 82 games every season. I don't think Duclair is correctly attached to the Coyotes because I've seen him sign for a bunch of teams as a free agent. The elite rookies look underrated (not just McEichel but in simulation moving forward), some of the stats are funny and the game forces itself to run on a stretched full screen for me, but I'm still super hyped to follow this thing through development.

I've noticed a few things, and I think a few have been mentioned already: - I've been scheduled 3 games in a row, and this season I had 4 in a row (!) with 6 in 8 - Contract offers are weird. If I'm looking to extend someone, say it's Jan 10 of 2016. It'll say "player wants two years at x dollars", so it'll take the current year of the deal as year 1 and then add 1 more year on. If the player wants two years, shouldn't it be a two year extension? I've noticed even the same thing for signing dudes in June, they want 2 years and it gives one for 16-17 and one for 17-18 (signed in June 2017) I think there were others but I don't remember them now. How important are setting individual player tactics? Unit tactics? Should I just "ask coach" for everything roster related? Mike Babcock got fired by the Wings so I hired him immediately e: what does setting a players status/role (key player, core player, etc) mean in the grand scheme of things? myron cope fucked around with this message at 15:59 on Mar 29, 2015 |

Tactics don't seem to be too important. The Devils were terrible even when I changed tactics around, there was really no difference. Adam Oates is their coach in the game so before the season I fired him and hired Joel Otto, who is a really highly ranked coach for some reason. Well after going 11-23-1 I fired him and hired Guy Bucher and the team was really no better. Otto wound up being hired by the Sharks, who were bad, and wound up making the playoffs under him. But Boucher is my coach moving forward and after a fourth from last finish, I drafted Noah Hanifin. So now my defensive depth is Larsson, Severson, Merrill (who had 35 pts and made Team USA), Gelinas, and Hanifin.

One tactic I did notice that makes a difference is having your faceoffs go to point shots from the defenseman is really effective to the point where it's probably overpowered.

Wow free agency is really hosed in this. They need to make some big fixes. AHL/4th line tweeners sometimes ask for over $1m per year, but players like Drew Stafford, who was pretty much the best UFA forward in the class, signed for like $2.4m per year. Meanwhile players who go unsigned (how in the hell is Bergenheim unsigned) and play in another league want $6m+ to come back to the NHL.

I think a 30 team, current NHL rosters fantasy draft in a possibly shortened season would be a good place to start, otherwise you'd be stuck with someone trying to unfuck Philly and Buffalo.
