ask me about my brothel
Our company's dupe tower literally just lit on fire after three dedicated years of service. We work in TV so this thing has been consistently pumping out hundreds of DVDs every week since we bought it, and it only ever lit on fire once before.

Anywho, it is my job to find the replacement. There are a handful of dupe towers with a good amount of positive reviews on various sites, but my boss wants me to be extremely thorough and research the individual components that each dupe tower is made of. Since all a dupe tower is is a power supply, a controller, and a bunch of DVD drives, I began to wonder if it would be better just to buy the components and build our own. But, since I only have a cursory knowledge of computer hardware and the prebuilt market, I figured I would ask more knowledgable folks. So, hello!

The research I have done thus far tells me that we wouldn't be saving much money building our own tower, but most of the prebuilt towers I've found seem to use drives that have received mixed reviews, some reviews say the drives have a chance of failing after only a few uses. The tower that my boss bought three years ago was about $500, and we're trying to find a replacement in this price range.

Is there a well-trusted, highly reliable Dupe Tower provider that anybody who knows what is what would recommend? Or would the best possible tower come from buying reliable DVD drives ourselves and building our own dupe tower?

Any advice is much appreciated.

For business I'd always recommend just getting something with a good warranty rather than DIY.

Never ever DIY production equipment unless it's a bespoke item and you don't mind being 24/7/365 on call for it forever and ever and ever.

Edit: Imagine the dumbest motherfucker on the planet has to use this device. Would you rather have to do it for him, or point out the manual and tell him to call the support line if he can't read.

Also, a $500 computer isn't worth spending more than a couple hours of your time, max. Being incredibly through means your boss gets to spend twice as much - $500 on the hardware and $500 on your wasted salary.

I personally use the rimage systems dupe towers (4 dvd drives) and they work really well. They're self contained, which means they ship with a windows OS or server OS depending on your need. They're quick on the phone and if the tower goes bad they just overnight (via freight) a new one. They've really grown up from a stack of (firewire!!) DVD drives to a fully fleshed out workhorse.

From a technical standpoint, they have a really good SDK and scripting kit and while we tailored the gently caress outta ours i'm sure you'll be able to script your workflow onto it.

For reference my 4 bay machine cost me 15 grand, but that included a 3 year warranty.

Also, do not try to build one of these yourself. gently caress that.

Dumb question from someone who doesn't know anything about dupe towers - why not buy 4 Dell shitboxes with double DVD drives for less money?

Thanks Ants

Like a buying quality storage product like SAN or NAS you're buying validation, uptime, and support.
