Latest Video(s): A Cold Reception/Polsy

The Batman: Arkham games are a good series for good people. Rocksteady Studios managed to do something even Superman couldn't do: make a satisfying superhero game that's actually faithful to the hero in question, and it's still a very good gaming experience. Arkham Asylum in 2009 and Arkham City in 2011 garnered multiple Game of the Year awards for very good reasons.

Arkham Origins is neither of those games.

Batman: Arkham Origins is the 2013 prequel for Arkham Asylum and Arkham City. Developed by Warner Brothers Games Montreal, many things changed and many things stayed the same but a little worse. Don't let me throw you off too much, Arkham Origins is solidly okay. But it's not up to the standard set by Asylum and City. Most of the additions to the game are well done, but the base framework is unpolished. There's quite a few baffling bugs that sometimes throw the playability into question, such as sinking into the ground in the middle of a combat challenge map. The PS3 version I had crashed whenever I use the fast travel system at launch. And there's also 3v3v2 multiplayer for reasons, which I won't be doing anything with.

I won't might be getting 100% but this game doesn't really deserve it. I will be doing all of the side missions, including the Riddler challenges (yeah he's back). I will try to complete the Dark Knight Challenge System but I make no promises. I will be doing all of the challenge maps, probably a good mix with different characters. I'll also be doing the DLC, Cold Cold Heart.

:frogsiren: Spoilers
Arkham Asylum and City are behind me, so go for it. Please don't talk about stuff in Origins before it happens (you know what I'm talking about), and don't spoil anything on Arkham Knight. It'll be coming out in June and I probably won't done with this by then.

Character Bios

Bruce Wayne
Info - Notes - Profile

Billionaire not-yet playboy and philanthropist. An angry young man with a grudge against the world. Voiced by Roger Craig Smith this time around.

Batman
Info - Notes - Profile 1 - Profile 2

The cowl that Gotham fears. Dangerous vigilante, if you believe the stories. Probably a myth. Psh whatever, our brave boys in blue don't need his help anyway.

Alfred
Info - Notes - Profile

Ever-loyal Alfred, the Wayne family butler. Not sold on this "Batman" thing. Believes young Master Wayne would be better off enjoying Christmas ham.

Warden Joseph
Info - Notes - Profile 1 - Profile 2

A non-dedicated city servant. Probably just trying to get his pension and put his kids through college. Compromised morals and eyeball.

Calendar Man
Info - Notes - Profile

Gotham's favorite (only, surprisingly) holiday killer. Also known as "won't be seen past the first video man".

Vicki Vale
Info - Notes - Profile

One of Gotham's citizenry not currently on the take. A young reporter with a hot head and weird "conscience" issues with her news stories.

Black Mask
Info - Notes - Profile 1 - Profile 2

One of Gotham's crime lords. Not a big fan of the Batman. Facebook profile lists "torture" under hobbies. No other hobbies listed.

Commissioner Loeb
Info - Notes - Profile

The wrong man for the wrong job. Corrupt as a Warcraft character. Probably the reason the police department is as corrupt as it is, trickle-down corruption.

Killer Croc
Info - Notes - Profile

The first of eight assassins hired to kill the Batman. Needs dental work. Must have done some workout and bulking up between now and Arkham Asylum.

Deadshot
Info - Notes - Profile

Super-l33t 720 no-scope sniper. Skilled, arrogant, deadly. Cockiness will be his downfall. Probably!

Deathstroke
Info - Notes - Profile

A would-be ninja. Heightened speed, strength, and perception. Skilled with a variety of weapons. Military super-soldier program gone wrong, but not Captain America wrong.

Electrocutioner
Info - Notes - Profile

Street-tough turned...street tough. Not a real high profile assassin but when you've got the touch, you've got the power.

Copperhead
Info - Notes - Profile

A new twist on an old favorite. Copperhead's an assassin who's normally known as a man. Recognizable from cartoon series as a guy dressed up as a snake.

Firefly
Info - Notes - Profile

A man with a jetpack and a flamethrower. It's about as dangerous and effective as you'd think. Despite being a guy who gets off on fire, not super creepy.

Lady Shiva
Info - Notes - Profile

Martial Arts master named after the Hindu god of destruction. One of Bruce Wayne's teachers. Card-carrying member of the League of Assassins.

Bane
Info - Notes - Profile

Luckily, a Knightfall take on Bane. Criminal mastermind. HUGE. Runs a gang who all want the gift of Venom. Just maybe they'll get it!

Enigma
Info - Notes - Profile

Some mysterious man with some mysterious vendetta against Gotham and the Batman.

Tracey
Info - Notes - Profile

Cockney as all hell. Proper naughty. A berk out for bees and honey. Penguin's second in command.

Candy
Info - Notes - Profile

The result of the economic downturn. Serves as one of Penguin's assistants. Job probably doesn't have many perks.

Penguin
Info - Notes - Profile

A short crime boss with a tall shadow. Has his fingers on the pulse of Gotham's underworld. Currently in an arms race with...everyone.

Alberto Falcone
Info - Notes - Profile

The heir apparent of the Falcone crime family. Nervous and hesitant at best. Refugee from a chopped storyline from the Long Halloween.

Anarky
Info - Notes - Profile

Liberal/Marxist/Communist/Anarchist/really angry at this city man. Surprisingly strong hand-to-hand combatant! Has been known to help Batman. Rarely.

Captain Gordon
Info - Notes - Profile

You know him, you love him, he hates Batman. A good cop on the right side of the law, he doesn't take kindly to Batman's vigilantism.

Branden
Info - Notes - Profile

A valued member of GCPD SWAT and corrupt to the core. With Commissioner Loeb gone his prospects are uncertain, but he'll do his best to find a new one.

Ricky "Loose Lips" Leblanc
Info - Notes - Profile

One of the Penguin's gun-runners. Considers himself a somewhat of a gun sommelier. Might have an idea of what he's talking about but y'know, whatevs.

Barbara Gordon
Info - Notes - Profile

Captain Gordon's daughter. Maybe adopted, depending on the continuity. A smart gal with a good head on her shoulders. Totally crushing on Batman.

Mad Hatter
Info - Notes - Profile

Look at this man. Just look at him. Now look away, it is not a pretty sight. Just replace the bio pic with a fedora and you're good.

The Joker
Info - Notes - Profile 1 - Profile 2

The game would love to tell you more about him but it's having trouble talking around the Joker's dick in its mouth.

Cyrus Pinkney
Info - Notes - Profile

An architect responsible for most of the Gothic influence in Gotham City. Contemporary of previous Cobblepots and Waynes.

Bird
Info - Notes - Profile

One of Bane's three lieutenant's from the comics. Taught Bane everything he knew about Gotham in Santa Prisca. Sort of an odd choice!

Harvey Bullock
Info - Notes - Profile

A crooked cop but probably not a totally bad guy. Captain Gordon's partner. A man who holds the Batman in contempt.

Harleen Quinzel
Info - Notes - Profile

A junior psychologist working at Blackgate Prison. Responsible for the psych report sending Calendar Man to the gas chamber.

Ah, this game. Terribly coded and lazy map design. But the story is not horrendous, the design of the characters is pretty great (esp. women characters... or, at least compared to the other two games), while Batman is a tremendous dick in this game, thematically it makes sense (though the other games essentially undermine the potential of character growth).

Edit - other good points, the Foley effects for combat are so much more visceral than in the other games, and combat is much more varied as well.

The game railroads you into defeating Croc first so Firefly would be the weakness order but I plan on doing everything with the Bat-buster.

I feel that. Coming from using the aerial redirect almost all the time it takes...so long now. It's like doing a ground takedown without the takedown.

I'm guessing the tiered challenge unlock system is just a huge pain in the rear end, not to mention that it can become unwinnable after a few points.

May 27, 2010

That's not right!
I know exactly nothing about this game, but the premise as introduced in the first episode is extremely enticing. A largely untested but still competent Batman, fueled by rage and untethered by his relationship with the Gotham police, widely known as an urban legend feared by evildoers and upstanding citizens alike, now targeted by an escaped crime lord and his hired assassins that could each be portrayed as complex and interesting anti-heroes in their own right, AND some mystery nemesis threatening to rear their ugly head at some point? That is an incredible recipe for success, and I'm a sucker for games that spell out the number and nature of your obstacles right at the outset to let you know what to expect and brace yourself for the twists they're going to throw at you, so I couldn't be more interested in seeing how this plays out and how it earned such a bad reputation despite all this.

Yes, it's here! Been waiting since the end of the City LP, this should be a good ride.

I actually played more of the Multiplayer than it probably deserved. On paper, the idea of using your predator mode skills against humans looks interesting, but in practice the only time they aren't looking over their shoulder is when they're shooting at somebody else, so the Heroes tend to be side-notes in a game with all the player slots filled. Since you aren't covering it at all, I wouldn't have minded demonstrating it, but my good computer is dead, and the online itself is probably also dead.

I'm thinking of the side stuff in Cold Cold Heart mostly. I'm going to do my best for the challenges but despite my better judgement I'll probably get all the little scanables and whatnot for the main game. My main problem with this was the boring-rear end city. I know at least half of it is basically the same as AC, but without all the stuff to do there - there's no riddles, no surreal-looking flooded district, no individual character to all of these parts ruled by different types of rear end in a top hat. It's just bland.
Which is a drat shame because on paper this looks like it has the best villain gallery out of the three games. It's got Firefly, for crying out loud. But the execution is just bad.

And let's not forget the combat likes to interrupt your combos for no reason.

I'm looking forward to seeing the DLC, though; I bought the game without it and honestly couldn't be bothered to get it afterwards.

Kinda an unfair assessment since it was released in the same month Arrow premiered, and was in development as early as 2011. Granted, Manu Bennett as Slade Wilson would improve the game, but that's more a missed opportunity than a failing.

Despite all of the negative things I heard about this game, which did affect my decision not to purchase it, the biggest reason I never got around to this game is that it is a prequel. After the events of City, I couldn't shake the idea that we got a prequel just to bring The Joker. I see this as a lazy and unimaginative reliance upon the character for simple branding purposes, especially in a series that has done a lot to exhibit some of the less well known villains.

To be perfectly fair to this game, it does exhibit plenty of less well known villains, and the stuff with The Joker and the origin of his conflict with Batman is quite masterfully done. The game is not as good as Aslyum or City but if you can get it for five bucks on a steam sale it's absolutely worth at least one playthrough. The pacing is all kinds of weird though.

I really enjoyed the game overall, although the combat definitely felt looser than the others (either that or I'm blaming the game for being bad). Jeez, I can't wait to sperg out about all this. Aside from the genric combat/camera bugginess, most of the problems were caused by discrete and easily identifiable design problems I can't wait to tear into. One caveat before that comes up- WBG Montreal probably did the best they reasonably could have given the constraints they were operating under. It's just that "best they could" wound up being pretty lousy.

Welcome back Scruffy.

I've beaten this game and I'll have my say on some moments when they pop up, especially 2 of the stupidest moments in the game.

Using Black Mask as the primary antagonist is good because the dudes barely gotten much of a reputation outside the comics, I think the only animated takes he's had so far are Batman the Brave and the bold, and the Direct to video movie Batman Red hood (which is good and you should check out).

This game is without a doubt inferior to the others, half the posters will probably guess the story before it happens, and the combat is more aggressive than previous games.

That being said, I still really enjoy this game, it's story, and the overall feel of still being the god damned batman. Glad to see you decided to tough it out and play it, Scruffy.

Edit: It also probably does Boss Fights better than the other two games, to be fair.
