Best thing I've found for her is to find something to make her chase you around, preferably with an ammo pickup available, so that you can LOS the big cannon and chip her down. There's a stairwell on Hellgate Station that works well, but the truck in front of the barn on Farmhouse works just as well (until you need to head into the house for more ammo).

Just did it on Suicidal for the first time, in Outpost! :toot: AK-12 + FAL (+1) for waves, then switched to M16 + FAL (+1) for the boss.

Just won two solo Suicidal games in a row, Matriarch both times. Once as a 24 Commando (RRLR), again as a 20 Medic (LRRR). I think I might be getting better at this game! :toot: The Medic's lightning rifle thing is a hidden gem, I swear.

I can do Suicidal pretty consistently solo now with most perks, as long as I keep on the move and don't let myself get cornered, but HoE still massacres me. Any tips?

HoE you need an actual team composition. A common pitfall is that you always "need" a medic, when an extra set of guns is just as valuable. The only class on HoE which cannot operate without a medic is tanky berserker, and that's just about it.

The map is the deciding factor on what you should need, especially regarding crowd control. Cramped maps or maps with hills that are difficult to aim on (such as The Descent and Black Forest) need a firebug to keep things at bay for everyone else, while open maps (such as the yard on Prison or Burning Paris) need a demolitions. You also need a heavy hitter to kill big enemies, also depending on the map. You can set up demolitions with an RPG to kill heavies, or use a sharpshooter. Every other class is just whatever best compliments everyone else.

HoE also doesn't require you to be excessively mobile, but you need to be willing to bail out of a bad situation and everyone has to be coordinated to follow. You'll always gravitate towards a single spot, but you need to communicate when you're retreating. Using map knowledge, you should travel as a group and loop around until you kite all the enemies into a more controlled cluster. Retreating isn't a fail state, but as you get better with HoE, you start doing this less.

If you want to win HoE easily, just for the sake of achievements, you can just do it solo as regenerating berserker or as a duo with tanky berserker and a medic. With three or more players, you can generally just do whatever you want, including stacking the same class. Funnily enough, I don't prefer HoE because it's too slow. Surviving a single round nets you more than enough money to buy most any weapon, and the spawns are paced farther apart than on suicidal, so if your team is good enough, you will have long droughts where no enemies spawn. In this regard, the best thing you can do on HoE, besides survive, is just to kill enemies as quickly and efficiently as possible so you don't get swarmed.

Yeah, okay. Even more than a month of regular play, I still pretty much just treat "clear this map on HoE" dailies as impossible.

Think I'd need a regular group on a voice chat that doesn't suck to do it anything like consistently.

Depends on the map. Firebug/Demo with the husk fireball launcher is my win button, generally. Berserk works too, if you're good with it, but they're planning on rolling out some pretty significant nerfs in the upcoming update.

I ignore the dailies that are HoE (well, I did back when I used to play it a lot) as it was too much hard work and end with failure too often. Especially when the rewards are really nothing.

HoE is deep in the territory of diminishing returns and to me serves simply as bragging rights. I'm glad it exists as an option, but I don't get any enjoyment from it.

Also I missed the six year anniversary! Early Access launched April 2015. It's so great to see that they continue to support the game, but it's feeling a little long in the tooth - especially with regard to load times. Maneater was really good and Tripwire are publishing Chivalry II, but I wonder what they're up to on the development front.

I'd love to see a KF3. Even if I wouldn't play it for quite a while because a new $60 is very much beyond my budget right now.

Hey, there's a conversation topic. What improvements would you want out of a KF3? Here's my big wishlist:
- All characters/DLC weapons, etc. purchasable through some kind of in-game premium currency. So you can still just buy them immediately, but you can also get them eventually through regular play.
- Either get rid of the loving lootboxes or make them cheaper, $3 for a random weapon skin is loving absurd, this isn't TF2.
- More voice line variety. I love the feel of the voice lines, but they get so old so quickly. (Yes, I know someone had a bad time here or a very good one, Anna. That's the third time you've said it this game. Please loving stop.)
- An easier way to find private servers that have mods in them, and some expanded mod support in general.

Edit: Instead of leveling up giving you perks, it lets you swap them. IE: being a Level 4 Commando doesn't leave you perkless, it just locks you into LLLLL, Level 5-9 into *LLLL, etc. The passive buffs for leveling can stay, I understand that's part of the curve. But everyone who remembers playing a Level 0-4 Berserker can probably imagine why this would be a positive change.

This is, sadly, more important to me than bettering myself.

Having a full slate of perks would be an absolute must for me, too, and they definitely need to get more voice packs - even if it's just b-reels from the initial recording sessions. In addition to unlocking new perks, they could add different starting gear loadouts as well if they're looking to keep people busy.

It might sound silly, but I'd like to see a lobby area that the players can mess around in, like Deep Rock. Most of the time when I am playing it's with friends, and having a little down time between games is nice, something to give a minute or two of messing around before getting back into it. It also helps make the game feel a lot more cohesive.

I want to see the character models have physic-y danglies on them rather than being completely rigid, and the same for the level geometry. Not just boxes that can be pushed around, but things swaying in the wind or from explosions. Don't have to be destructible terrain, but some reaction.

Speaking of boxes and stuff, having the body parts and other objects server-side so all players see the same stuff would be nice from a "come take a look at where this corpse ended up!" perspective.

One thing I really want that they could do right now is for the "up up and away" weekly game mode. Every now and again rather than inflate and then explode in the air, a Bloat should deflate rapidly with a farty balloon noise and jet about before exploding. Because I'm a child and it would make me laugh.

If I kill a zed then their vocals should stop. I also wish that headless zeds would stop homing in on me. And don't tell me to fix myself up if all that happened was I lost 3% armour by the end of the wave. I don't look terrible at all!

Speaking from personal experience, Zerker is the best for solos, even HoE. Once you reach level 15 at least, if you spec into Skirmisher, Butcher, and Parry. Carry the Pulverizer and the Teslauncher. As long as you have corners/covers to kite/duck behind the Matriarch will have trouble hitting you, and believe it or not, you can parry her extended grab. The timing is a bit tricky but you need to block just after it looks like the claw grabs you. Use the Teslauncher to break her shield/arm cannon, and then beat her to death after you get the Parry ability to proc. Plus the Teslauncher does great damage to the EDARs.

Of course as Theta pointed out they're planning on massively nerfing Zerk really soon so I'd recommend getting what you can in now with this.

Event
Interstellar Insanity
You made it! The moon landing was performed without any complications! Well, almost... Anyway, this research station has gone quiet for a while so you must check if everything is going well. But considering that communications were cut off a few days ago, the situation does not look good, so don’t let your guard down. On top of that, there are also 2 alternative scenarios that you may experience that will imply an additional challenge level: Arachnophobia and Scavenger weekly modes. But there is some good news! At least you will be able to use the new fancy tools from Horzine Research Group, the HRG Bastion and HRG Blast Brawlers, that were being developed in this station. Final advice: it may take you some time to get used to the moon’s gravity.

1 New Map
Moonbase
Compatible with Survival, Weekly, and Endless Game Modes.
Takes place on a secret Horzine research outpost on the Moon which you arrived into via the Steam Powered Rocket.
Features low gravity across the map.

2 New Weekly Modes
Arachnophobia

Custom Zed spawn composition, with more Crawlers than usual, which have much more HP than usual.
Stomping capacity has been improved and now it will cause devastating damage, so it's the recommended way to deal with the Crawlers. Stomping on them will also regenerate a portion of the player’s health.
Making several stomps in a row will grant the player a damage bonus for some seconds.

Scavenger

Traders will be empty of weapons. Armor and Grenades are the only available things to purchase.
The weapon pickups spawn rate is increased.
The weapon pickups pool will vary on each wave, including weapons of different tiers depending on the wave.

4 New Weapons
HRG Blast Brawlers for the Support
An alternative version of the Static Strikers for the Support Perk.
The default fire mode will shoot blasts out of each fist like if they were shotguns.
Some of the melee capacities are kept from the original weapon, like the block and the heavy attacks.
Trader price is 1600 Dosh.

HRG Bastion for the SWAT
An alternative version of the Stoner 63a LMG for the SWAT Perk.
It counts with an energy barrier that can be activated or deactivated with the alt-fire button.
Energy Barrier reduces incoming damage but will deplete if all energy is consumed. The energy automatically refills when the barrier is not active.
Trader price is 2000 Dosh.

FAMAS Masterkey for the Commando and Support
This is a paid DLC weapon. This weapon can be shared amongst players through our weapon-sharing system.
It is a tier 3 assault rifle with an underbarrel shotgun attached. It’s also equipped with an ACOG Zoom Scope.
Default fire mode is 3-round-burst fire from the rifle. Alt-fire is pump-action from the underbarrel shotgun.
Primary and secondary ammo are managed with separated box-fed magazines.
Trader price is 1200 Dosh.

Thermite Bore for the Firebug
This is a paid DLC weapon. This weapon can be shared amongst players through our weapon-sharing system.
It is a tier 4 weapon that launches thermite grenades that pin to enemies and to any surface. They explode after 4 seconds, creating residual fires all around.
Projectiles can be manually detonated with the alt-fire button.
Trader price is 1500 Dosh.

Designer Notes :
We have integrated the skip trader vote system in the Versus game mode, which will make the process of skipping the trader easier and clearer for players. Only the Survivor players will vote.

We were aware of the stun reliability problems of the Crossbow and Compound Bow headshots against Scrakes, and the frustration that it may cause. We have worked on improving the system and now the headshots stun power should be applied correctly to the Scrakes, and stun them with more consistency.

The Compound bow was not in a bad spot but we think that one of their fire modes, the cryo arrow, was not performing as good as the other one, the sharp arrow. So we boosted the explosion of the cryo arrow to allow a higher damage capacity and more effective freeze effect against groups of Zeds. Finally, we increased the ammo capacity of the weapon to encourage the use of more cryo arrows to players that are usually conservative with ammo, regarding that this fire mode does not leave pickup as the sharp arrows.

We made some adjustments on the Hemogoblin to improve its viability as a medic weapon. Apart from the bleeding mechanic, the semi-automatic fire mode was a bit unbalanced, so we increased the damage of the primary fire, and speeded up the reload time. We also increased the healing of each dart to make it slightly more impactful, in a midpoint between the HMTech-401 and the HRG Incision.

We implemented several nerfs to the Berserker and Field Medic perks, mostly related to their surviving capacities, as we had a lot of community reports about both perks overperforming in that aspect, even more if their capacities were combined. We love to see the different synergies between perks and strategies that our community creates, but we would like to have every perk in a similar balance point, and each of the 10 perks to be equally relevant in the game.

Finally, we made some adjustments on Demolitionist’s Extra Rounds and Support’s High Capacity Magazines, to improve their viability, as they were underperforming compared to their counterpart skill and were less prefered by most players.

That Berserker nerf's heavy, but not as bad as I thought it'd be.

Moderate Medic nerf in exchange for a buff to my favorite bad weapon? Awesome. And Symbiotic Health's still hands-down the better choice, IMO. Might throw a grenade at my own feet a bit more often, but y'know. Not the worst.

Good Lord almighty they really need to nerf Matriarch she is ridiculously overtuned, like even on just Hard it's basically a given much of the time that you're gonna wipe on her, between her lightning & plasma attacks being way too strong(basically able to drop someone almost instantly even if they have full health and armor), her having ludicrous amounts of health(not to mention being way faster than she has any right being), and her whole gimmick of summoning ludicrous amounts of EDARS she is just not fun at all to fight

1) Try to make sure you always have something to hide behind or loop around. She takes after her father and has a big wind-up, visually and audibly, before she unleashes either ranged attack. Surviving plasma, especially, is about breaking LOS as soon as possible. 90% of the time on Hard and Suicidal, the people I see getting whomped are caught out in the open.
2) If you have a team and even a little bit of coordination, have someone on dedicated EDAR duty. Support are great for this, because EDARs have their weak point in the torso, not the head, so a Support with a good shotgun can clear them out quick by just aiming for center mass. Berserkers are also good for this, because they do not want to be close to her before the arm cannon is off. (Hell, even once it is, staying up close can be a dicey proposition.) If you're solo or working with uncooperative pubbies, just focus on EDARs yourself and stay out of Matriarch's way, kiting her around short loops, etc.
3) Focus on blowing off her arm cannon when you do attack her, then do the opposite of what you did before, and get out in the open. She's scary in melee, but not dangerous. Her sonic and electricity attacks again have big visual and audio wind-up so you have time to back off. And if she grabs you with her tentacle, as long as she whacks you while you have open space behind you, she'll actually send you pretty far away from her, more than far enough to book it and reload/heal.

TL;DR: Stop standing in the plasma.

To be frank most maps have little to no good cover to hide from that drat thing, she's just a badly made boss

I've found moonbase especially rough if you get her there. Maybe it's partly because I don't have a good idea of most of the map layout yet, but it seems like there's very little safe loops in there as well. Also moon jumping for cover is pretty slow and becomes a toss up on whether you can break line-of-sight in time.

Really? I've always found a van or rock or kiosk I can loop around and block her ranged attacks. If you run her around in the correct direction you can even shoot at her while she's trying to plasma you.

And above, for moonbase you really need to stop jumping around during a matriarch fight, as she will liquefy you if you're caught in mid-air.

I'm genuinely tempted to pull up a list of KF2 maps and draw good Matriarch-dodging loops, because I can think of maybe two or three where you really are stuck with a bunch of lovely open spaces. (Elysium, Nightmare...)

Edit: Also Moonbase is new and weird.

The human animal is a beautiful and terrible creature, capable of limitless compassion and unfathomable cruelty.
Hellgate Station has a good loop that's down one of the stairways in the main area, then clockwise around and up a stairwell and back out and down again.

Dystopia 2029 is a great one at the normal holdout spot due to all the cars and pallets sitting around to duck behind.

Forgot this was sitting unplayed in the ol' Steam game library up until this past weekend when that got fixed. Plays better on my newer machine than KF does.

Miss the unique characters and hope the Keith Richards analogy will make a re-appearance. Or the "Dosh," guy.

If you own KF1 you should have the "classic" characters, who are voiced by the old KF1 voice actors.

Unless you mean the old characters themselves, in which case I think they have a good spread of reimagined old characters. People have been requesting the Dosh guy for years but I have no idea how you can do it without infringing some copyright.

The most merciful thing in the world, I think, is the inability of the human mind to correlate all its contents. We live on a placid island of ignorance in the midst of black seas of infinity, and it was not meant that we should voyage far.

vvv :stonk: I turned the vocals off in KF2 almost immediately anyway because it was distracting, seems like I dodged a husk rocket there as well.

Is there anything that's going to crack your defense of this game or can you just physically not admit he's saying abhorrent poo poo that deserves to be called out? Sure, it's had some questionable stuff in the past, some of which I didn't know about, but regardless: this doesn't raise new questions or concerns for you? Not even a little?

because I want you to know, I read that news, and I knew without a doubt I'd see a Theta Zero post in this thread downplaying it. So, genuinely, let me ask: What will it take? Where exactly is your line where you say "you know, actually, yeah, that is hosed up?" and yes this is a real question I would appreciate you answering.

as for me, putting Tripwire firmly on the no-buy list was easy - I've long been burned out on kf2 and unwilling to consider anything else they do - but for those who are not in that place, I wholeheartedly suggest everyone here follow in the path of Shipwright Studios, who've been codeveloping with TWI for over 3 years and have just announced they're going to dissolve their contracts immediately.

e: also if you've really known all along about this what does it say about you that you haven't tried to raise awareness or warn people off? for six years?

Uh yeah I never knew this about the Tripwire CEO and would've appreciated being informed that he's a shithead. Lord forgive me for being "late on the trigger," as if I would conduct an extensive background search on how much every purchase of mine contributes to the unstoppable juggernaut of fascism

/\ Agreed - I didn't get that vibe at all, and one of the guys I play it with is super Christian, so you'd think his bible-sense would have been tingling.

I've got 1600 hours in KF2, mainly because it's one of the few co-op games that I can play online with my 5 other gaming friends. When more games support that many players then maybe I'll move away a bit, but they are thin on the ground. 4 players is still very much the popular choice.

So, weirdly personal internet arguments aside, yeah, this was news to me, too, and it’s the last push I needed to decide I’m done with KF2 for good. I got tons of time and enjoyment out of the game, but I haven’t played in a while anyways, this is just taking it off my “get back to it some day” list.

Later, thread. Time to shut the pod.

I started playing it for the first time a couple of months back and I never noticed anything to suggest any of that. I did turn the lovely music off though so maybe that was the main giveaway?
