What are the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup and Canadian Championship? These two competitions are the tournaments to determine the best club, regardless of level of play, in their respective country. What this really means is any team, regardless of how good they are, can win a trophy. What's so important about these competitions? Other than the trophy, the winners of these competitions get access to the CONCACAF Champions League, where they will proceed to lose to a Mexican team in depressing fashion. It's also the only source of pride for Toronto fans, although winning a three-team round robin isn't much to be proud of. Who gets to play? All professional teams are eligible for the competitions; amateur and semi-pro teams must qualify to make the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup (no amateur or semi-pro teams play in the Canadian Championship). How do the competitions work? Canada: 5 teams USA: 91 teams Canada: Home-and-home with away goals rule USA: Knockout Canada: Play-in round (Edmonton vs. Ottawa) Semi-finals (Play-in round winner vs. Vancouver, Montreal vs. Toronto) Finals USA: Preliminary round (USCS, USSSA, and two USASA teams enter) First Round (NPSL, USL PDL, and most of the USASA teams enter) Second Round (USL teams enter) Third Round (NASL teams enter) Fourth Round (MLS teams enter) Four Rounds afterwards Are these games televised? Canada: Yes, on Rogers Sportsnet USA: No. Some matches will probably be streamed online, and the final will be on Fox Sports 1 or 2 (maybe). When do these start? The Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup begins April 25, with two matches involving amateur teams. Normally, the Canadian Championship starts in April, but because of the FIFA Women's World Cup being held in Canada, it's been delayed until July, its new permanent home. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2015_Lamar_Hunt_U.S._Open_Cup <- Schedule and bracket Edward Mass fucked around with this message at 01:49 on Apr 21, 2015 |

Looks like we can either drive 30 minutes to a rubbish high school field to watch GPS Massachusetts vs Seacoast Phantoms, or 90 minutes to a drat nice little venue (Lusitano Stadium) to see the Western Mass Pioneers take on GBFC Thunder. Was there a play-in round for PDL teams? I'm wondering why the Boston Rams aren't competing, since they'd be my first choice to watch. Maybe they opted out since the club's never really been stable...

This thread got me intrigued to see if there was a local soccer team in Las Vegas that go into the tournament. The PDL Las Vegas Mobsters did not. But, I never knew they existed, so I got tickets for their 2015 season. Thanks thread!

The aforementioned GPS Massachusetts-Sea Coast Phantoms game has been moved from Wayland, MA to Cambridge, a smart 10-minute walk from Harvard Square. If you're in metro Boston, no excuses for missing this one, you can take the T to it.

Ottawa Fury was ahead of FC Edmonton 1-0 at halftime last night in the first leg of the Canadian Championship prelim, and then they pretty much crapped their pants in the second half and Edmonton won 3-1. That was Ottawa's home leg too.

Alright, so this GPS Massachusetts-Seacoast United match is going to be bigger than expected. Turns out there's a small American Legion outpost/bar across the street, so they're making an event of it, and more than 50 people have signed up to attend so far. https://www.facebook.com/events/1438411553138194/ I think this is gonna be a pretty fun time, actually. Hoping for some nice weather for it! Admission to the game is apparently free, you just gotta bring cash for snacks and drinks at the outpost.

Ottawa needed to score at least three goals tonight to have a chance to advance to the Canadian Championship semifinal against an MLS team. They allowed two goals in the first ten minutes

Giving this a bump since the regular MLS thread mentioned it. A whole shitload of lower league US Open Cup games are kicking off on Wednesday, and it's your moral imperative as an American to go and see one if it's in your area. I'll be in Cambridge MA, watching the Greater Premier Soccers of Massachusetts take on Seacoast Phantoms United. There's a facebook page with some details. Bring cash if you want to buy snacks, beers (Bud/Miller $3, "fancy" beers $4) etc. If you're in Metro Boston, just take the MBTA red line to Harvard Square-- it's a 15-20 minute walk from there, on a crisp spring evening. The rest of you yahoos in the US, check the big bracket on the wikipedia page (sadly, US Soccer's USOC page sucks) here, and try to double-check on a local site-- the wiki still lists my match as happening in Wayland, MA, but it was moved. So - who else is goin to one of these?!?
