i remember someone explaining that n64 was really hard to develop for because of memory constraints compared to ps1, but ps1 only has two megs and n64 has 4 megs (8 with expansion pak)

maybe it was texture memory? n64 games seem to have a lot less textures than ps1

quote:

In terms of its random-access memory, or RAM, the Nintendo 64 was one of the first modern consoles to implement a unified memory subsystem, instead of having separate banks of memory for CPU, audio, and video, for example. The memory itself consists of 4 megabytes of RDRAM, made by Rambus. The RAM is expandable to 8 MB with the Expansion Pak. Rambus was quite new at the time and offered Nintendo a way to provide a large amount of bandwidth for a relatively low cost.

i'm still waiting for the 128 bit console....

Soldier of Fortran

the ps1 had less RAM and it was split between VRAM and main DRAM

the n64 had more RAM and it was unified. however, the unified memory was slower than ps1 VRAM

also a reminder that these limitations were partially deliberate in order to scare off shovelware devs from making n64 games

which backfired horrendously, as the shovelware devs not only proceeded to make games for it anyway, but they made even worse ones because they had to deal with console limitations as well

the main reason sony dominated so hard with the playstation was the $5-10 license fee, nintendo was charging like $25/unit before manufacturing (which only they could do so that was another $10-20) which is why n64 games were $70-80

i think it might just have supported sending in quads while treating them as tris internally, sort of like GL_QUADS

quads are also what u call the make-believe boxes on sprite sheets and textures that determine where one piece begins and ends
