Welcome to the Something Awful Oath Thread! This is the thread for the SomethingAwful.com Oath Thread, a fun and engaging painting competition where the winner is YOU!

What is this 'oath thread' business, then?
The Oath Thread is aimed at miniature figure painters who are:
  • returning to the hobby after some time away
  • brand new painters
  • regular painters
  • anyone wanting some motivation to paint their piles of miniatures
  • anyone interested in learning new painting & model techniques
  • any painter that wants motivation to get their piles of models painted
  • anyone who wants a chance to get great stuff for free!

The Oath Thread is primarily for wargamers of all types, miniature painters and model builders/sculptors, but anyone interested in painting a small version of something is welcome to participate! Because of its past history, the thread is mostly populated with fantasy & sci-fi gamers, and some of the prizes available reflect this.

How The Oath Thread Works
Each month, you can promise (or 'Oath') to paint a model or group of models. Post a picture of the exact model you're going to paint. By the end of the month, if you've finished painting that model, you may also win excellent FREE prizes from some of the top names in the wargaming industry!

That's really it. There are a few rules, such as how to format your oath and when you need to post your finished picture, but these will be laid out in this thread and on a publicly accessible wiki page so they'll be easy to find.

I’m an old-timer, I know all this stuff! What’s New This Time?
There’s a bit that’s new:
  • The deadline to post new Oaths has been removed. Now, you can Oath any time right up to the very end of the month - but you must post your Oath Complete picture in a different post before midnight (still American Samoa time).
  • Themes for each month will be announced well ahead of time, so you can plan your models, conversions, etc., accordingly.
  • There are several new Achievements to help keep things fresh!
  • Usernames in Oath Complete pictures are now REQUIRED to earn points towards the year-end total.

How to Earn Points (and Prizes!)
Earning points is easy. Post a picture of your finished model(s) before the deadline and you earn points! (this is actually where you'll earn the bulk of your points) Complete the Journal theme and you get more points. Put your user name into the picture of your model and you get another point. You get the idea!

If you do the theme and correct Oath and post finished pictures of your model on time, you'll earn 5 points in a month. There are other ways to earn points, however...and the top points-earners at the end of the Oath Season (at the end of April 2016) will have the opportunity to choose from a selection of awesome Grand Prizes!

Click here to see the current points totals: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1gyczYXjiTMPxtFrjYiqm1qJIQmj5hjevoWPDwos354w/edit?usp=sharing

But remember!
Earning awesome prizes is a secondary goal of the Oath Thread. These are THE MAIN REASONS you should take part:

1. Be motivated to paint all those awesome models you've got stacking up
2. Get painting tips and advice
3. Share your awesome models with other awesome people
4. Have a chance to win cool prizes from great companies and wonderful people

These is just the basic info. See the next post for the simple guide to posting your oath and how you will claim points. For the complete details, we've now got a wiki web page! Check it out at https://somethingawfuloaththread.wordpress.com/

CLAIMING YOUR PRIZES
With any luck, you'll win some prizes! Either as a random prize draw (monthly or quarterly) or as one of our Grand Prize winners (approximately the top 10 participants on points).

From the time that you've been selected to win a random prize draw (monthly or quarterly), you will have TWO MONTHS to claim your prize, so please check the thread regularly to see if you've won. After this time, your prize will be put back into the available prize pool for other goons to win. There is a whole post below filled with links to the prize winners each month. Prizes are handed out on a first-come, first-served basis, so if you're late it's possible for someone whose name gets drawn after you to pick a prize before you.

The default method to claim any prize you may get is to EMAIL krushgroove at krushgroove169 at gmail.com. Please put 'Oath Thread Prize for (your username)' as the subject of your email. In the body of the email, provide your real name, postal address and prize choices. Finally, please see the Postage Costs section immediately below.

POSTAGE COSTS
Because most of the prizes are sent in one shipment from the sponsors, it generally falls to krushgroove (and Iris of Ether, the keeper of the US Grab Bag stuff) to pay for postage to places all around the world. By default, everything sent by mail will be by the cheapest option, without tracking. From the UK (where krushgroove is based) to the US, airmail packets take about a week to get to CONUS (continental US).

However, if you want to chip in as a prize winner or you just want to help out, get in touch with krushgroove (krushgroove169 at gmail.com). With extra help I can pay for tracking to make sure you get your loot. It costs between £4/$7 to £7/$11 to send a prize out, depending on size and weight.

IF YOU'RE HAPPY TO WAIT FOR YOUR LOOT
Another way you can help is to defer your prizes until the end of the Oath Season. This is entirely optional but does help save a lot of money. Thread regulars did this last time, in Season 5, and with the help of Gmail's email search function and threaded conversations it's easy to catch up with prize choices for various people.

How to Oath your model:
1. You can now post your Oath at ANY TIME of the month - no more Oath deadline! However your finished Oath must be posted by the deadline: midnight *AMERICAN SAMOAN TIME* (not Samoa! CLICK HERE to see the deadline for Oathing and Oath Completion
2. Your model must be photographed out of its package and in one of these states:
2a. still on sprue, off the sprue and unassembled, partially assembled or fully assembled
2b. unpainted, primed or basecoated in a SINGLE color
2c. zenithal priming IS allowed, however pre-shading or picking out details is NOT allowed**
3. Go to http://www.worldtimeserver.com/ on your computer/tablet/phone, select AMERICAN SAMOAN TIME (or click this link) and take a picture of the oath model(s) beside the date and time on the screen. The time, date and location should be readable and the model should be recognizable. It’s hard to get everything in focus, but we must be able to count the models and if it's in multiple pieces we must be able to see all the parts of the model. Make sure the screen text is READABLE and IN FOCUS before uploading your picture.
4. Upload your picture to http://www.imgur.com or any other publicly accessible photo-hosting site and copy the BB code link into your oath post. (note: you can add your name to your Oath picture, but it isn't necessary)
5. Please also indicate what scale and brand of your figure(s) - this allows us to give helpful statistics to our prize sponsors.
6. Hit the ‘Reply’ link and put something like ‘I, [yourname], oath that I will paint this [model name]’ - make sure this text is in BOLD so new Oaths are easy to find.
7. Hit the ‘submit’ button and check the thread periodically for your oath to be accepted! (If you have any doubts about your oath being accepted, wait until krushgroove approves it, or at least 24-48 hrs before starting to paint it.)
8. Once your Oath is approved, your Oath is LOCKED IN and cannot be changed, only added to (see Oath Additions, below).
9. CLICK HERE to see the deadline for Oathing and Oath Completion

*Why American Samoa? Because it gives everyone the opportunity to paint until late at night on the last day of the month (unless you are living right on the International Date Line) rather than having to finish in the morning or afternoon of the last day, which doesn't really work out well if you have a normal school/work day.
**zenithal priming: If you are in doubt, take a picture before you have primed the model (the safest and easiest option), or post a picture of your zenithal-primed model and ask. Pre-shading, which is not allowed for Oathing examples include panel lining on vehicles or shading on muscles, wings, etc. Anything can be done to the models after Oathing, of course.

Completing your Oath
1. Make sure you are posting before the end of the calendar month - remember we’re using *AMERICAN* SAMOAN TIME! CLICK HERE to see the deadline for Oath Completion
2. Don't miss out on the scoring! YOU MUST INCLUDE YOUR USERNAME IN THE PICTURES YOU POST TO EARN POINTS. This is very easy to do without using a photo editing program: simply write your username on a piece of paper and make sure your name is clearly visible and readable in your photo. You can also add in your name with photo-editing software (online or otherwise). PLEASE NOTE that if you take lots of pictures of your model(s), it helps everyone if you include your username in every photo, especialy if you finished several models or have different backgrounds in your photos. IF YOU DO NOT INCLUDE YOUR USERNAME YOU WILL NOT EARN POINTS. If you're only participating to paint your stuff and/or win monthly/quarterly prizes, you'll still be eligible for those but you WILL NOT be counted for the season-ending points totals.
3. Post ‘Oath Complete!’ with a picture your finished model or group (if you're posting multiple pictures, try to use the [timg] tag instead of the [img] tag so they don't take up huge amounts of screen space) - see below for where to get free image hosting and how to post the images
4. If you did the current or any of the previous Detectuv’s Jurnal challenges, TELL US which one in bold
5. If you are claiming any Achievements , TELL US which one in bold and post whatever is relevant for that bonus
6. If you did anything else that should earn you bonus points, TELL US which one in bold
7. (Optional) Copy your post to the Miniatures Painting Thread and whatever other thread your fellow gamers post in (D&D, Malifaux, Battletech, Historicals, etc.) and encourage them to play, too!

NOTE: There is NO themed group for Season 6 (unless someone wants to step up and manage it and donate stuff)

SAVE DA WHALES!
Did you fail your Oath? No problemo, there's no shame in that (unlike in previous threads)! You can also SAVE DA WHALES! which is sort of Oath Thread code for 'saving' an Oath that you failed. Here's how to Save Da Whales: Just post (after the 1st of the month) that you're gonna try and Save da Whales, and then post an Oath Complete that shows the completed Whales stuff, along with a link or quote of the original Oath that you failed. If you post an Oath Complete post that also includes your current Oath stuff, be sure to keep your August stuff separate from the Whales (so it's clear to Iris what to credit you for and where). Questions? Leperflesh, the Saviour of the Whales, answers your queries here!

Achievements
Achievements are how you can earn bonus points during the year and have a bit of fun. You're welcome to do as many or as few as you like. Each Achievement is worth ONE POINT and can be claimed just once during the Oath Season, and you must complete your Oath to earn the point(s) for your Achievement. I'd recommend you pace yourself with the Achievements, as there's only so many to last you 12 months! If you have an idea for new/cool Achievements, let Krushgroove know in the thread!

Make sure to CLAIM your Achievements where necessary: when you post your Oath Complete picture, simply post in bold what Achievement you are claiming. Of course, Judgements don't need to be claimed.

The 6-pack!
Claim this Achievement the first time you complete a Season 6 Oath! You don't need to claim this one, because any completed Oath means you've earned this one automatically!

Backstory
Write a character intro to make us laugh, then make us cry. Then make us laugh again! Why is your adventurer carrying two lanterns, a sack, 4 belt pouches, a backpack and 3 swords. No judging on the content, but extra internet points for making it entertaining in some way. Minimum 50 words. Post your backstory with your Oath Complete picture.

I rolled a 6!
...or a 20...or maybe an 01...Whichever is better for your chosen game. Create or paint markers, template, dice or some other gaming aid. Pretty up those translucent acrylic templates, custom-carve and/or paint some dice (yes you can get blank dice) or make some other game aid that you have to paint up. Just another way to customize your gaming experience! (To be clear, in this Oath Thread, Warmachine wreck markers are 'markers' and craters/wrecked vehicles for 40K are 'terrain'. We'll cross & burn the bridges for other markers/terrain for other game systems when we get to them!)

Box art
Copy the original paint scheme that the manufacturer used for your model. You must provide a link to the original artwork on the company's web page, in the company's product catalog (not web forums, etc.) to be counted. Post the link to the original box art with your Oath Complete picture.

Speed painting!
How fast can you paint one model? AFTER your oath is approved, take two pictures with the worldtimeserver.com website clearly in the background of your picture: one at the start of your painting session with your single-color model, and one at the end of your painting session with a completed model! The base does not need to be done to be called 'completed', but remember that if all your models are based you do get a point for basing. The time stamps on the worldtimeserver.com site must be within 24 hours of each other. No extra points for quickest painting time! That would be too hard to prove without video.

All for One!
At the end of Oath Season (at the end of April 2016), take a picture of ALL the models you've painted during the year, INCLUDING your April Oath (if you Oath a model during April). Include links to all your oaths (use the '?' button in any of your posts) plus a list of all the models you painted. You WILL be impressed with how much you've painted during the year!

Spring Cleaning! New for Season 6!
Take a picture of your painting area, whether it's a laptop painting station, TV tray, desk or kitchen table. THE MESSIER, THE BETTER! A valid date stamp must be readable (you're allowed to take a wide picture of your table/whatever, and a closer picture of your phone/tablet/laptop with the current month's date stamp - your device showing the timestamp must be obviously on your painting area). Before the end of the month, you must completely clean, tidy and organize your painting area and post a picture of your newly refurbished and efficient hobby space! The idea of this Achievement is to clean up your hobby spot, so if you need to wait until you pile up dirty brushes and clipped-off plastic, so be it. Need an example of how to do this Achievement properly?

Apprentice
Complete 3 Oaths during the Oath Season.*

Journeyman
Complete 6 Oaths during the Oath Season.*

Expert
Complete 9 Oaths during the Oath Season.*

Master
Complete 12 Oaths during the Oath Season.*

Note: The Apprentice, Journeyman, Expert and Master Achievements stack with each other, so if you complete 12 oaths you will get an extra 4 points, but if you only complete 11 oaths you will get 3 points.

SPONSORED SPONSOR CONTEST New! :woop:
This is a way to get the sponsor a bit more airtime in front your eyeballs, but it's also a great way to get entered into an extra prize draw from our awesome sponsors!

The first Sponsored Sponsor Contest is just for one of our greatest sponsors, KR MULTICASE! This contest will take place in JUNE

So...what does this involve? Basically, you just need to do 2 things: 1) own a KR Multicase box, bag or other model carrying device, and 2) decorate it in some fashion using your artistic skill and tools! The only stipulation is that the cardboard case, fabric bag or metal case must be a KR Multicase product (if in doubt, just post a picture of what you've got and ask), your artwork must include the KR logo and your artwork must not cover the KR logo.

Every person that completes decorating their KR case during the month of June will be entered into a prize draw to win a brand new KR Multicase Aquila case! Perfect for holding a small group of models for games like D&D, Malifaux, Necromunda, Blood Bowl and a ton of other games.

(If you're wondering about figuring out the date stamp for this particular thing, I haven't thought of a way to do the date stamp on something as distinctive as the KR cardboard box, apart from mailing out barcodes to everyone...if anyone has any ideas just let me know, otherwise it'll just be 'have fun!')

Challenges (formerly Journals or Logs)
Each month has a theme, and every theme will have its own technical challenge and theme challenge related to the main theme. You only need to do one Challenge to earn your Challenge Points, doing both Challenges in a month will NOT give you extra points. Finishing one Challenge will get you ONE POINT.
Aussies and anyone in the Southern Hemisphere can choose to use the alternate theme calendar if they wish. The calendar you choose won’t be tracked, but we’d like everyone to attempt each theme so please stick to one calendar.
May: School’s out! Let’s celebrate the big yellow school bus!
  • technical challenge: yellow can be a tough job to get right, so let’s do our best! Paint something yellow on your model - with shading and highlights. The yellow should be at least 25% of the model, or more.
  • theme challenge: paint a school bus-themed model!
June: Summer’s here! Holiday theme time!
  • technical challenge: let’s go with the sun and beach for your holiday travels this year - paint water, mold water & paint it - just stick water on your model somewhere (bases included)
  • theme challenge: Travel-time! Anything involving travel to a holiday destination using a vehicle of some sort
July: Patriotism ahoy!
  • technical challenge: paint a flowing flag, either on your model or create a flag or banner for your models to rally around
  • theme challenge: paint your nation, state, region, or whatever flag, the best you can
August: Feeling hot! hot! hot! it’s the hottest time of the year!
  • technical challenge: OSL! Now it's time to PAINT a cool glow effect on your model! Fire, engine heat, glowing eyes, whatever you can think of
  • theme challenge: paint actual flames, smoke or something similar on your model
September: New TV season time! Traditionally this is when new network TV series start, so hey let's roll with it!
  • technical challenge: Paint the best representation you can find of a TV character you love. This can be a freehand Joker on a car, an actual Batman figure, or anything of the sort.
  • theme challenge: Paint up something to do with a TV show you like! It can be a homage, character portrait, replica of a character or vehicle
October: The month of horror movie releases and Halloween!
  • technical challenge: paint a 'classic' scary monster, like Frankenstein, the Creature from the Black Lagoon, etc. - but in black and white!
  • theme challenge: put something spooOOOOooky on your model!
November: Harvest Time! Oranges and yellows are the theme! ORRR go with Day of the Dead as your theme
  • technical challenge: your choice! paint orange and red leaves on your model OR paint some skulls (actual paint 2D skulls, not just painted model skulls)
  • theme challenge: your choice! harvest time celebrations OR Day of the Dead (Google it)
December: Holly-Jolly Christmas-time, of course! (or Kwanzaa, Hanukkah, Saturnalia or whatever) Red & Green, White or anything holiday-themed!
  • technical challenge: red is one of the hardest colors to get looking 'right', so paint a mostly red model, complete with shading, mid-tones and highlighting. Red should be at least 25% of the model, or more.
  • theme challenge: something for the holidays, of course!
January: So C-C-Cold! it’s the middle of winter and my snot is frozen solid!
  • technical challenge: paint a mostly white model! similar to yellow and red, white can be difficult, so this is your challenge! You should have shading, mid-tones and highlighting
  • theme challenge: paint a model that is wrapped up against the cold or set in a winter wonderland of snow and/or ice!
February: It’s Leap Year! (and Valentine's Day!)
  • technical challenge: in the spirit of Valentine's day and all the heart icons that this entails, let's see your best blood effects!
  • theme challenge: paint a model that is leaping, jumping or soaring! OPTIONAL theme challenge: paint a heart of any style somewhere on your model!
March: Spring is springing! It’s all GREEEEENNNN!!!
  • technical challenge: spring is about new beginnings, so take those bitz and parts and make a model to paint! Yes, this is all about scratchbuilding and converting!
  • theme challenge: paint or model something on your model that represents new growth - it doesn’t have to be green necessarily, just representative of the theme of springtime
April: Moneymoney! Tax time!
  • technical challenge: Tax break! Choose an intermediate or advanced technique that you aren't familiar with and haven't tried before, and do your best to practice! (we're not going to track who's done what)
  • theme challenge: paint a model that is directly involved with money in some way - it could be a market seller, dealer or pipe organist...even better if they're actually holding cash or you can paint money on them!

(sorry, Australians - YOU guys only are specifically allowed to swap around the themes to fit your seasonal weather: January Summer Holidays; February Feeling Hot; May Harvest Time; July C-C-Cold; September Springtime;)

You don't have to do both Challenges - you only get the Challenge Point for doing one or the other of the Technical or Theme Challenges each month. You will not get extra points for doing both Challenges.

Judge's Decisions
-----------------
Yes, this is a painting competition as well as a way for you to knock down your painting backlog - you can earn points for being any judge’s top 3 pick. We have 3 judges and they’ll each be rewarding points each month as follows:

1st place : 3 points

2nd place : 2 points

3rd place : 1 point

Best Challenge (must be the current month’s Journal): 1 point

So, yes, you can earn up to 13 POINTS in one month if you do things right and really impress the Judges!

We’ll once again use The Bachtere Clause MkII: Anyone who receives 1st or 2nd place from a particular judge will only be eligible for points for 3rd place the next month from that judge, but can earn Best Journal points from any of the judges. An oather may receive points for Best Journal from more than one judge during a month.

And your first Challenge is:
SCHOOL'S OUT!
Your Technical Challenge: yellow can be a tough job to get right, so let’s do our best! Paint something yellow on your model - with shading and highlights, the whole shebang. The yellow should be on at least 25% of the model (roughly an arm or leg on a figure).
Your Theme Challenge: paint a school bus-themed model! It's totally up to you how to accomplish this - use your creativity to get the job done! (note: it doesn't *have* to be yellow!)
You don't have to do both Challenges - you only get the Challenge Point for doing one or the other of the Technical or Theme Challenges. You will not get extra points for doing both Challenges.

Remember that there is NO MORE deadline for Oathing, you can Oath right up to the deadline! The Oath deadline is the end of the month in American Samoan time.

CLICK HERE to see the deadline countdown clock in YOUR local time.

Another new rule to remember is that if you do not have your username in your pictures, you will NOT get ANY points for the month! If you're participating only to reduce your pile of unpainted miniatures, this will not concern you. However, if you are going for points, PUT YOUR NAME IN YOUR PICTURES!

Yay new season time!

A couple of comments on the OP that might avoid confusion:

These two lines seem confusing when read together. One suggests I'd get zero points without a name, and the other suggests I'd just be missing a bonus point without a name.

The bonus point for basing has been removed, right? If so, this needs updating

February is missing a technical challenge

And finally, shameless promotion for http://oath-countdown.appspot.com/ where you can get a easy 'how long have I got left in my timezone?' countdown. I'll change it up to account for the removal of the t-7 day oathing rule in the next few days.

Thanks for that, I thought I'd cleared up the inconsistencies but I'll go back and fix them. I'm also open to suggestions for the February Challenge and any extra Achievements from anyone.

Also, I was searching the old thread for your timer, I'll add it to the OP and each month's Challenge post :)

My goal this year is to focus on completing an army (or more!), so I'm going to try to get at least one full unit per month instead of one or two models at a time like last year.

JerryLee posted:

Anyway, here's my oath.

I, JerryLee, oath to paint 5 Chaos Terminators

These were built from a mix of Forge World and third party parts, and there's a couple of Scibor and GW-Prime bits in there as well.

When approving this oath, please let me know whether painting the loincloths yellow on all five of these would be enough for the challenge. If not, I'll need to make an oath addition later for that.
To my eye, you'll need to do a little than the tabards/loincloths to get 25% of the model in yellow. Maybe adding the helmet, the banner things, the hands or even the knees or feet in yellow would be enough. I'm not going to dictate to anyone how they should paint their models, so feel free to dig around in your unpainted pile for something else to paint yellow.

Oaths Accepted!

I'm going to make a curious question: is it okay to oath models without bases, even though they usually come with ones? I'm asking this because I've just moved to a temporary home (renovations) and I didn't pack my basing materials with me, so I won't be actually making many bases until autumn.
Yes that's fine, bases aren't counted anyway towards completion. Just Blu-Tac the models to something so they stand up for the Oath Complete picture, or something like that.

JerryLee posted:

If you can post your month swaps exactly the way you're planning to do them, month by month, I'd be happy to make that the official Australian/Southern Hemisphere option for the monthly Challenges! :)

RE: the Alternate Universe Oathing
At the moment I'm just going to keep this simple and leave it as it was for Season 5. NEW ACHIEVEMENT!

Spring Cleaning! a 1 point Achievement

(I'm open to discussion on this one, feel free to chime in)

also...

For June, we'll be doing our first ever SPONSORED SPONSOR CONTEST!

This is a way to get the sponsor a bit more airtime in front your eyeballs, but it's also a great way to get entered into an extra prize draw from our awesome sponsors!

The first Sponsored Sponsor Contest is just for one of our greatest sponsors, KR MULTICASE!

So...what does this involve? Basically, you just need to do 2 things: 1) own a KR Multicase box, bag or other model carrying device, and 2) decorate it in some fashion using your artistic skill and tools! The only stipulation is that the cardboard case, fabric bag or metal case must be a KR Multicase product (if in doubt, just post a picture of what you've got and ask) and your artwork must not cover the KR logo.

2 pictures, 1 showing the time and 1 showing the models properly.

I saw the announcement of the sponsored contest, but forgot about it completely until it got mentioned just now. Could a mention be added to the first few posts somewhere? Maybe near the themes/photos/winners/etc lists? Especially if there are maybe going to be more of these.

Ah yes - I meant to add them to the OP the night I posted them :)

The KR one is for June isn't it? I've got the perfect idea, assuming I can use the small KR dice case as my er... 'subject'.. :)

Yes - KR is for June, future months for other sponsors that want to take part*. You can use any KR product (apart from their dice)

*and that I/we can figure out things for - it'll be hard to do a sponsor month thing for our brush sponsor, Springer-Pinsel, because we won't be able to say for sure that anyone used their brushes

And just as I'm about to post a big begging post for goon sponsors (which I'll still do, we are actually pretty low on sponsors), a major brand name steps up to help out :) As soon as I get details on what they can offer I'll post the update :D

(but if you're a goon and can help out with prizes or want to donate stuff please let me know!)

A thought about the paywall thing, would it help if we had some sort of an external page that show cased the oaths and judgements each month? We could then slap sponsor logos on it and potentially use it to raise the profile of the oath thread.

I do have the wiki page links (which I do send to all prospective sponsors) in the OP, no idea why I never thought to use WordPress, because I literally manage 4 WP sites. The wiki page is a pain in the rear end to edit but it does have links to the spreadsheet when it gets going, the latest photo album and pics of the Judgements. I'll see how quickly I can transfer that over to a WP site, though.

I've also thought about starting a Facebook group (I also manage a few of those), but didn't know what you guys would think about that. It would be a nice 'external' way to brag about your models and share top 3 judgements, and we have had a couple of sponsors ask about sharing stuff to their own FB pages too. Plus, it's a great way for all of us to 'meet' outside of SA, but I also know many goons actually don't like to do that. So I'll leave that up to you guys to discuss/vote on.

Zark, I'll add your stuff to the UK/EU grab bag album for season 6, I must have kept forgetting to do that last time! Are you OK to post it from where you're at or do you want to send it to me to post out?

1x Kovnick Jozef Grigorovich
4x Winterguard Infantry

From Privateer Press

I may well end up painting more of these by the end of May in which case they'll probably end up in my finished picture.

To keep the Oathing stuff in a separate post, just wanted to say about the Facebook group (not page), if we started one:
  • first of all it would be *in addition to* this thread and the web page (be it WordPress or wiki)
  • further to the above, joining the Facebook group would be OPTIONAL, not required, if you don't want to connect IRL/online with other goons outside of SA that's fine, just don't join
  • further to the above, the photo albums would continue to be on Google Photos (especially now that they're free, unlimited, for life), NOT posted only on Facebook - although the top 3 photos at least would be posted in albums to the group
  • it would also be a closed group, so no one outside the group would be able to read or see the posts in it
  • I think for sanity I'll have to be the sole admin, hopefully there's a setting where members are not allowed to add random FB members
  • in the interests of goon privacy, we might have to figure how to confirm a username is linked to an IRL name - potentially (off the top of my head) goons would email me directly, I'd give you some simple password, then you ask for membership to the group using your username and password - there would probably be some easier way to do this but I literally just thought of that while I was typing
  • prize photos, announcements, photo album links and other stuff would be posted in there, as well as 'good job' messages and other stuff (hopefully family-friendly but whatever)
  • you guys would have my solemn promise that I won't change the group status from Closed to Open (I see some game group pages do that), so you could post a comment like 'phroar' about whatever titty cheesecake models (or giant alien space robits) that may get posted and your Aunt Bertha and Uncle Maurice won't see whatever you might have to say
  • and finally a heads-up that sponsors would be invited to see the Facebook page, so there will be a few non-goons seeing the page, but again you don't have to interact with them at all

Hopefully that settles any fears (which seem to be mostly about personal privacy, which is understandable). For the record, the only IRL info that's been given to anyone regarding the Oath stuff is so that people can be sent stuff from sponsors, whether they are fellow goons or companies giving us awesome stuff. I'm happy to friend anyone on Facebook (so feel free enri!) because in my day job (and one of my side jobs) I'm fairly 'known' within our little niche industry, but I know this is a rare thing, and even rarer among goons of a certain disposition.

OK. So about the site - I think I will transition the wiki page to a WordPress site for sure, although I can't say when that will happen. I've got a full-time job, painting commissions as one of my side jobs and a fiancee' who for some reason wants me to spend time with her, so I'll get to it when I get to it :) I 'know' WordPress, having run several of my own blogs/sites on there and managing a couple of others (similar to the FB pages).

I think that about covers it...? Anything else? I'm not going to do anything right away so we can have a bit more discussion about it, but we are heading into a rainy weekend (surprise, Britain!) so I will likely have some time in the next couple of days. If we come to some consensus and general agreement I'll get started.

I like everything said apart from the closed part of the Facebook group. If only SA forum members can see it, and membership has to be verified to join it, is it doing anything that this thread doesn't already do?

Sponsors will be able to view and link to it on Facebook, that's all. No one but goons can see this thread, so it's just a thing for sponsors to link to, in addition to the web site. Spreading the word via social media helps when there's more than one platform at work, for some (like Prodos) they're much more active on Facebook than their actual WWW site, for other companies they still update a lot via their website. Also, as a closed group you wouldn't be able to share pictures FROM it, but you could share pictures TO it.

(ANOTHER!) NEW SPONSOR ANNOUNCEMENT!

Acrylicos Vallejo
is another NEW sponsor!
Their Facebook page

Acrylicos Vallejo should need no introduction to miniature figure painters, but just in case you're unaware of who they are, they are THE go-to paint brand for many model painters around the world. They are a Spanish company that make acrylic paints for artists, fine artists and model painters, and their products are considered the gold standard in the world of military static model (where their Model Color and Model Air range are king) and also for wargaming models (with the Game Color and new Game Air range).

Guess I'm screwed til I can buy/borrow a camera. I get why it's that way but man that's going to be tricky for me to do when my only camera/Web Access device are the same thing.

This sucks! I'm sure this was never considered when the rules were first made, and you're the first to come a-cropper on this particular point. However, is there a way you can borrow someone's phone to take the picture? They would just have to go to the worldtimeserver.com page to show the time. You can then use the Imgur app to upload the photo and get the URL to put into your Oath post. I can't think of any other way off the top of my head. What about also going to a library or maybe your local game store with just your miniature to take a picture against their screen?

If you DO put your name in, you WILL earn points, as well as be eligible for prize draws and Judgements.

The idea is that if you just want to get things painted, dip in and out, etc., don't worry about your name. But those of you shooting for the top 10, add in your name for sure!

Hopefully this doesn't make things too difficult for the judges (it all depends how they look at the finished models, whether it's post-by-post from the spreadsheet links or only by the photo album pictures)

Nope! No themed group and we don't have a sponsor for the themed group for last season but if someone wants to step up and offer something (anything from Paypal monies to kits or whatever) feel free.
