Ever wanted to try your hand at playing Movie Studio Exec?

Come play the Hollywood Stock Exchange with SA goons. I'm opening up the league today, please post or PM me with your email if you'd like to join. I'll reset all the gains on Thursday morning to give everyone a fresh start and we can go from there. If it's popular, we'll reset every month or quarter and I'll provide some sort of prize. I'm sort of shocked that there isn't a league for SA already but search reveals nothing.

From their website:

:siren:HOLLYWOOD STOCK EXCHANGE®:siren:
Hollywood Stock Exchange® (https://www.hsx.com) is the world's leading entertainment stock market. At HSX.com, visitors buy and sell virtual shares of celebrities and movies with a currency called the Hollywood Dollar®.The Company's Virtual Specialist® technology allows an unlimited number of consumers to trade thousands of virtual entertainment securities in a fair and orderly, supply-and-demand-based market. HSX syndicates the data collected from the Exchange as market research to entertainment, consumer product and financial institutions and as original content to radio, television and print media. Founded in 1996, HSX is now a subsidiary of Cantor Fitzgerald, L.P. HSX is headquartered in Los Angeles, California.

This is your chance to own a little piece of Hollywood. The Movie Market is the part of the Hollywood Stock Exchange where you can trade movies and stars, just as you would stocks and bonds. On the Movie Market, the movies are MovieStocks®, the stars are StarBonds®, and Hollywood Dollars are your ticket to fame, fortune, and fun. You receive two million Hollywood Dollars to start out with when you join the Hollywood Stock Exchange, which you use to build up your portfolio. The Movie Market also offers market info, message boards, sweepstakes, and enough movie news to satisfy Hollywood gossipmongers everywhere.

I've been playing since 20003 and I have around 38 million in the bank but I don't day trade. Most of that is from buying movies the day they are announced at $40 and then selling the weekend before release at $200 million. they give you cool graphs and such also; here's an example of my net worth tanking 10% because Ultron opened soft:

Questions

When does a MovieStock cash out? A MovieStock delists and cashes out from the market on the first business day after its fourth weekend of wide release. If the film remains in limited release, the MovieStock cashes out similarly after 12 weekends. The MovieStock for a film that goes straight to video or television cashes out the week the film debuts in the U.S. at H$0.00.

How are stock price adjustments calculated? A MovieStock will adjust in price after its opening weekend in order to bring the expected box office gross in line with the actual box office gross. On average, a film makes 2.7 times its opening weekend box office during its first four weeks of wide release. Typically, a MovieStock is halted on its wide release date and price adjusted on the Sunday of its opening weekend.

Let's get it on! Here's the link to the league page: http://www.hsx.com/league/view.php?id=3592

Okay, that makes 4 so far. I'll update the OP as we go, let me know if you haven't received invites yet.

boar guy

The admin page says there are no pending invites and only I am in the league at this time so I hope it's just screwed up!

boar guy
Jan 25, 2007

Up to 8 or 10 invites and 4 signups. I will reset the totals at 8 AM PST on Thursday the 28th and we'll say the first season runs for a month :)

boar guy
Jan 25, 2007

Not a lot beyond what we choose to make it, really. The site keeps league stats based on % gain and gives you a way to organize but that's about it.

boar guy
Jan 25, 2007

Jesus, Jurassic World is up 24% in the last two weeks. I can't help but think it's less because Chris Pratt mind controlling raptors is all of a sudden something people want to see and more the relatively disappointing performances of Tomorrowland and Ultron pushing expectations up.

EDIT: I have invited everyone that has sent me an email address pretty much 30 seconds after you sent it so check spam folders plox, still only 4 people in the league which starts tomorrow morning. Thankya :tipshat:

Okay, league is reset. Have fun!

(yes, they have an announcement that trading is currently down which in 12 years, I've never seen happen)

My best advice in the short term is just to play the weekend openers for the upcoming week: http://www.hsx.com/security/feature.php?type=opening. Pick something big like San Andreas and make a play either for or against it.

From their Strategy forum- Keep an eye on the estimates for the film's opening weekend as they are released and see if they line up with the price. Also, ask yourself - do you expect it to overperform those estimates? Underperform? Look at other disaster movies and see how they did in their opening weekends. This is really the only way to decide how to act on a security.

This is my current portfolio:

and this is my trade history for the last 30 days:

I've been playing pretty passively for the last few years but if the league becomes active I will probably take half my portfolio and day trade/play weekend openers with it.

HSX is something I spend like 5 minutes a week on...not sure what you mean.

boar guy
Jan 25, 2007

I'm not sure what's going on, I'm not getting any notification emails and the page doesn't show anyone pending. Looks like I picked a perfect time to start up a league :) If you tried to register on the site and couldn't feel free to PM me your email and I'll try to invite you that way.

Standings heading into week 2:

Weekend Openers are:

Entourage $45.53 (Seems high for an R -rated movie about a 5 year old show that didn't go out on a high note)
Spy $97.86 (Seems pretty grossly overvalued to me, I'm not sure how many asses Melissa McCarthy puts in seats)
Insidious Chapter 3 $58.72 (Not sure about this one since horror is almost always undervalued on the exchange. Dunno if the series has that kind of draw.)
Love & Mercy $3.17 (Never heard of it)
Wild Horses $1.16 (Never heard of it)
Testament of Youth $.54 (Never heard of it)
Hungry Hearts $.27 (Never heard of it)

Derivatives:
Entourage opening weekend $17.56
Entourage $15 Million Call/Put $4.75/$2.70

Insidious opening weekend $25.51
Insidious $20 Call/Put $4.52/$2.60

Spy opening weekend $39.38
Spy $35 Call/Put $4.40/$3.25

Frankly, everything opening this weekend seems a little bit overvalued to me as it stands right now. Make sure to get your trades in as this weekend's securities will halt tomorrow afternoon in anticipation of Thursday midnight openings.

I'm not playing this weekend's openers as I have a large part of my net worth tied up in Jurassic World and I want to see what happens with that first. I also intend to stay loooooooong on Incredibles 2 as well, so that's a big chunk of H$ I don't have for trading.

boar guy
Jan 25, 2007

yeah it's just like, my opinion, man :)

They are marketing the poo poo out of it, anyway, so i guess i'll think of it like the Divas match in between the last few weekends' midcard and the next few weekends' main event; a nice little cooldown flick.

boar guy
Jan 25, 2007

Looks like Insidious edged out Spy by about 100k last night. Horror is always undervalued!

I am sorely tempted to take my 57.7% gain on Jurassic World and run before it actually opens. The market thinks it's going to do 303 million but with Mad Max doing 300 that seems...low? Really conflicted on that one.

Nice Job, Sebadoh!

Standings heading into week 3:

Weekend Openers are:

Jurassic World $309.17 Not sure how to call this, it's opening against...nothing. Will audiences bite? Have they already seen everything else?
Me and Earl and the Dying Girl $9.62 Good ratings on RT, but depressing subject matter for a summer movie. Not sure how to call this one either!
Set Fire to the Stars $.69 Zuh?
The Wolfpack $.61 Zuh?
The Yes Men are Revolting $.50 Zuh?
Live From New York! $.35 Zuh?
Madame Bovary $.13 Zuh?

Derivatives:
Jurassic World Opening Weekend $116.53
Jurassic World $100 Call/Put $8.26/$.46

Looks like everyone things that JW is going to clean up!

I was just at a bar for the basketball game and there were about a dozen people in JP cosplay. Think it's going to do well!

boar guy
Jan 25, 2007

wow JW up $10 today...70% profit on that fucker and i only bought it in May

boar guy
Jan 25, 2007

Saw a few Nedrys. Movie was pretty okay!

EDIT: I usually sell movies after their opening weekend; it doesn't look like JW is going to move much more. That was a great stock. WTF are you buying, Gigante, that has you up 186% in the league? It's not all Classic Cash...

Is anyone else still playing?

Nice job, Gigante. If this keeps up you'll win the month 1 prize :)

Wish we could get some more people playing, though! The bigger the league, the better.

boar guy
Jan 25, 2007

7.2 million in profit on Inside Out, a movie I bought like two weeks before live release. Score!

boar guy
Jan 25, 2007

no worries, I just wanna make sure the thread isn't just gigante and i talking, 'cause we can do that on the HSX board :tipshat:

boar guy
Jan 25, 2007

Okay, well, Gigante absolutely murdered our first month, so congrats! Fisty and Crindy also did well, the summer box officer is crushing expectations so far (at least HSX's expectations, anyway.)

PM me your physical address, I have a literal prize for ya.

I'm going to reset the league shortly here and we'll start Season 2. If you haven't signed up yet, please do.

If you have asked me to invite you and haven't received said invite, I need to know as there may be some sort of problem. By rights I think we should have more people signed up; I know I invited at least a dozen.

Jan 25, 2007

Weekend Openers are:

Ted 2 $144.27 Critics hate it, but its audience won't care. My guess is this is still a little over valued, though, being rated R.
Max $30.27 The kids I took Jurassic World to squealed when they saw it but it looks a little heavy. Could bring out the American Sniper crowd over the long 4th weekend as well.
The Pardon $.23 is this opening in more than one theater?
Batkid Begins $2.24 haha no way this makes that much
Big Game $.38 I'm fairly sure this has already been out on PPV for a while? Zuh?
A Little Chaos $.17 Alan Rickman directs! 83 theaters!
Escobar: Paradise Lost $.12 Can the star power of Benicio Del Toro bring asses into seats into the 105 theaters this is playing in? Time will tell.
Into the Grizzly Maze $.05 I think this theatrical release is to justify the eventual cruise ship/airline version

Derivatives:
Max Opening Weekend: $12.77
Max $15 million Call/Put $1.27/$3.70

Ted 2 Opening Weekend: $56.80
Ted 2 $55 million Call/Put $2.85/$2.90

Someone who plays the derivatives feel free to comment on them- Ted 2 making 55 million this weekend seems like a lock but is it worth it to liquidate say, T5 to buy it?

boar guy
Jan 25, 2007

I want Genisys to tank so badly but it's not going to

boar guy
Jan 25, 2007

Okay Gigante, prize went out yesterday. Post it when you get it, maybe more people will play :)

boar guy
Jan 25, 2007

Most of what I have right now are long haul plays, I maxed out on Mad Max 2, for example, and I ain't selling Incredibles 2 any time soon, either. That's why I am keeping the league seasons short at a month, though, to encourage people to use at least part of their portfolios to play weekly openers.

boar guy
Jan 25, 2007

Not sure why MMAX5 tanked so hard after the IPO but it looks like its coming back. Someone stop Sebadoh!

boar guy
Jan 25, 2007

I know that a lot of people have applied but aren't included yet; I'm not seeing any kind of notification emails or anything in HSX, either. I emailed 'em last week, we'll see what's up so that we can get people to join up for season 3.

boar guy
Jan 25, 2007

I have sent an email invite to every single person that's given their address in this thread. I have a tech support question in with HSX but in the meantime you can try this link: http://www.hsx.com/league/join.php?id=3537

boar guy
Jan 25, 2007

I figured as much, yet the fact remains that

boar guy

yeah there are probably 8 or 10 other people that have applied as well. it's making it hard to keep it interesting :argh:

Yeah that Pixels put is too good to pass up. I totally flip flopped on that one but I have a sneaking suspicion that it's going to play in Peoria.

Also I'm long on The Martian and it's criminally undervalued at $141, I think. I don't know how they will make that boring slog of a textbook interesting for the screen but it's matt damon and they will promote the poo poo out of it.
