Qatar certainly demonstrates abhorrent new depths for their depravity, though. How they can ignore all the deaths just so far when it's what 7 years away..that's just unspeakably awful. They key here is that until now, the corruption was annoying but ultimately accepted as the cost of doing business because things more or less worked. Russia was corrupt but they're a world power and are fully capable of pulling off a competent World Cup. Qatar is different because it's literally impossible for them to host, and are now actually loving things up by forcing them to mess with season schedules worldwide.

Coldbird posted:The only surprise is how sloppy the people they're catching have reportedly been. The guy who made millions and just sat in a 24k/co condo in New York, never even bothering to file fake tax returns? The FIFA exec whose US immigration form listed him as a decorative rock salesman with severe dementia? It sounds like they just didn't bother with hiding poo poo because they thought FIFA's multinational status meant they were untouchable, and up until now they sort of were. If the rest follows that line, the thing could collapse quickly as soon as someone serious really investigates it. Yeah it's kind of funny how the origin of the whole investigation is that the flashy ultrarich guy didn't even bother to file income taxes for years. That's hilarious

Bip Roberts posted:He's probably partially right in that this stems from losing the bid because of illegal activity from FIFA. Apparently the investigation predates the whole bid, though I'm sure that broken mirror helped give it more juice.

tirinal posted:I wouldn't particularly put it past them, but how do you even manage to kill 4,000 workers while building facilities? Unless the construction sites literally involve chunks of cement being flung by trebuchets, that is far too high a number for workplace casualties. Even if you don't give a poo poo about safety, you can't kill that many people and build a stadium at the same time. Heat stoke and dehydration probably, with the occasional heavy machinery accident to spice things up

Greed and an aura of invincibility is a hell of a drug. Well maybe in a vague sense by funneling a bunch of bribe money one way or something like that.

There are lots of people to pay, there's creative accounting even in successful productions, and nobody's going to think twice about millions of dollars vanishing into the Sepp Blatter biopic.
