Have been waiting for this thread to appear since I watched the pilot last week!

One word: Amazing!

I couldn't believe how fantastic the pilot was. I'm really hoping that it continues to live up to the hype. The attention to detail was intense, and its adherence to real life social engineering/hacking added to the immersion!

Now the long wait until episode airs

Those things are unavoidable sadly.

No different to House, where we have highly trained doctors explaining to each other what an elevated ALT score means. They would already know this stuff themselves, but the audience doesn't so you get these scenes instead.

At least it was technically accurate :)

My favourite part was him burning the coffee shop owner at the start with his TOR takeover explanation.:smug:

Gabriel Macht perhaps. And its a tesla roadster for memory.

This episode's highlight hacking was the mix of melting down his gear (complete with drilling out the HD platters - I own a drill exactly the same as his!) after freaking out at the ease of hacking the E Corp interim CTO, and then loving over the drug supplier because he was a rapist scumlord.

One thing I really love about this show so far is their attention to technical accuracy. Whether it be the hacking, or the date rape effects, or even just the modern day that people are trying to get their warez picked up on the street, its a pleasant departure from all the hollywood hacking and cliches that normally adorn TV shows.

No idea what the chinese webcam hack was about though? I was half expecting it to be Elliot spying on that guy from work because hes a cheating douche.

It definitely was. The "rapper" trying to push his "new album" was really just trying to distribute a CD with malicious software on it, hence the boyfriend complaining that the CD didn't work and his laptop just kept spitting it out.

I'm going to have to rewatch! I totally missed that connection. Makes a lot more sense now.

Here, take this, its ecstasy, you'll feel alive. (:ssh: its actually a rohypnol)... She was obviously date raped. She had no idea where she was, why she was in a bath, why she had contusions on her head, or if she'd even had sex.

I loved that it was the sleazoid drug dealer who called him on it: "I bet you even think you're not an addict."

Shame that they put him away so quickly. He could have been a great foil to Elliot especially if he was desperate for the more specialised drugs and the supplier was holding Elliot to ransom some how.

True, but at the same time it shows that Eliot has strong principals when it comes to Rapists, even overriding his own addictions.

Well they could have left the rape part for another episode in the future. Perhaps just had her touched up for money or something. Just seemed like they closed a good opportunity for character interaction off too quickly.

Pretty sure the city would notice a giant arcade full of games draining off the grid, though. It's not like they're just running a satellite wifi connection and the laptops.

You'd think so, but then again a Sydney council didn't notice 50,000 litres of water going missing per month. For 18+ months. It was only uncovered when someone went to sink some house foundations and there was treated water coming in through the subterranean rock shelf.

Could you link to some news about it? It sounds hilarious.

The true hilarity was where the couple that discovered the issue installed a whole bunch of expensive measures to divert the flow (retaining walls, bilge pumps, tapping a channel into the storm water system), rather than get a hydro-engineer out there to work out what it was. It cost them over $150k and still no avail. They ended up trying to pursue court action.

It was featured in Season 1, Episode 4 of Grand Designs Australia.

You forgot 0

0) Hack into the hospital computers and change his lab results to show NEGATIVE for opioids. As demonstrated in episode 3.

Edit: seems you're talking about his actual supply. My point still stands. Since he is hacking into the computers to change his results, it stands that he has access to the morphine from another source.

If I recall correctly from e2, it was the lack of suboxone suppliers more so than morphine suppliers that made him second guess flipping the dealer/raper to the authorities.

The dinner party was probably the most bizarre part of the episode. I know that the theme of the episode was finding people's vulnerabilities, but what is Wellick planning to achieve with the wife of the future CTO?

My guess is he will string her into an affair (or perhaps a prize for his wife), then use it to put pressure on the other guy to bailout of accepting E-corp's CTO offer.

In a gross kind of way, I found him challenging her on the toilet to be kind of sexy. Especially when she responded in kind and gave him a beaver shot. She knows what's up, and was perhaps hoping to have lured wellick away with her toilet remark?

I"m kind of hoping that we'll see the fall out of distablising e-corp. Many shows have one of two outcomes:

1) The hero stops the bad guys at the last minute, and its crisis averted (aka 24)
2) The world is already broken so the universe of the show is in a post apocalyptic state already (dark angel)

This could be a good opportunity for cause and effect or "every action has consequences" to play out. Everything sounds great to Elliot and his cabal when they're in the throws of destroying e-corp, but what happens when it actually happens. If E-Corp is as big as its supposed to be, then it won't be all rosy when they get hosed.

The only thing that bummed me out in this episode was the lack of real life meta references. I went to hit up Sam Sipeo on google and there was no entry for him.

How I Met Your Mother used to go to the trouble of registering domains and launching microsites to support the URLs that were dropped by characters in the show. I was hoping for the same thing in this episode... At least a wikipedia entry :(

Really expecting Mrs. Wellick to be White Rose tomorrow, and that Eliot will end up joining EvilCorp in some way through some Tyrell manipulation and for the fsociety cause

I predict the reverse of this. Wellick will find out about fsociety, and then team up with Elliot so that the new CTO cops the wrath of fsociety's actions.

EvilCorp is only partially destroyed, and Wellick manipulates the board into firing the CTO and installing him in the CTO's place. Same way that the first guy went down.

Instead of outing FSociety and his connection, Wellick will use them as his own private army to rattle EvilCorp as he climbs the ladder further and further up the chain.

edit: Or maybe they just didn't bother. What is the size of the data that catalogs most of the world's debts anyway? How long were they encrypting? Less than 3 days? What's Evil Corp's response time to service downtime?

Last year National Australia Bank had a massive outage that lasted over 10 days when a system mangled their main data stores. Millions of transactions were corrupted and it took a while for them to recover everyone's banking details to a usable state. ATMs, direct debits, credit cards, and the works were all offline and many people had significant troubles with everyday banking. Additionally it also caused problems for companies that were using NAB payment gateways for their e-commerce business.

My dad was affected, but had money in non NAB bank accounts to see him through. Not everyone was lucky. Although NAB were willing to compensate people that incurred fees as a result of their systems not working.

This was just Australia, and less than 20% of the population (so less than 5m accounts maybe). I'd say that something happening to a super conglomerate would be far more explosive. If anything, Mr Robot downplayed the insanity an event like that would cause.

As someone mentioned this does leave the system open to having the key extracted from memory by an attacker like the dark army but if the overwrites occurred the data is gone anyway. White Rose has a corporate rivalry with ecorp anyway, it seems like he wants to see them brought low and has little interest in saving them.

If I'm not mistaken, it was Whiterose and the dark army that did the hack on the live data centres in China. FSociety only had to tamper with the offsite tape backups. Whiterose would have already had the encryption keys as they are the ones that perpetrated the hack in the first place... Unless I'm missing something?

Yeah, this is what I worry about too, although at the same time the actual implications of instantly destroying 70% of consumer debt are kind of absurdly huge and I don't know how you make a show about that.

Dark Angel was set in that sort of world. Although it was an EMP that wiped out data rather than hacking.

I am also worried about how they will accurately capture the downcast of society over time. It won't be an instantaneous bang, but more of a protracted affair where people slowly run out of hard cash, and then start bartering with possessions before ending up on the streets.

Some real life examples:
- banks have outages from time to time where people can't use ATMs. The country doesn't implode and the people who are affected feel some temporary pain
- Greece had to shut the banks down to prevent people doing runs on their accounts. There were queues around the block for days as people tried to get small amounts out of their accounts. The country didn't descend into chaos, but that was primarily due to the central bank propping their economy up at the 11th hour
- Germany after WW1. Their money was so worthless that people were using it as wallpaper. The post war government was able to turn around the economy and drastically reduce inflation to bring the Deutschmark back to a usable currency. Not strictly the same, but the country didn't collapse totally as a result.

Definitely watch The Machinest. Its one of Christian Bale's best movies. Very similar to American Psycho in terms of his character intensity. Plus the transformation in his body between this movie and Batman Begins is insane. I thought it was CGI at first, but its all legit.

Thats the one. He shed a lot of weight by eating a daily diet of celery and tuna for 3 months. He was pretty gaunt. Which was a massive feat considering how bulky he'd been for batman.
