asdf32 posted:As per the constitution the president I voted for is overseeing the negotiation of the treaty which will then become public and be ratified (or not) by the representatives I also voted for. Why does TPA need to go through now? Why not after the 2016 election? Since that president will be the one most likely presenting TPP (and TTIP as well?) to a vote in Congress.

We need to surrender state sovereignty to multinational commerce and start a trade war with China ASAP. This is what America needs right now.

When does mass media talk at all about trade policies? Everything we've heard has seemed like a last ditch effort to use Obama's brand to advance TPP. I would love a recent example of policy specifics and alternatives being discussed on CNN/Fox/MSNBC. Remember globalization is an inevitable force that we have no agency over, like a hurricane. There do need to be market equilibrations as a consequence of economic interdependence - and this affects everyone and everything - labor costs, living standards, costs of medicine - going up and down all over. The great strength of the US has been the 50 states with a central system requiring open borders and trade. This is a guiding example of internationalism/globalization. Shouldn't the borders to our north and south begin to vanish as well? A continental economic shift allowing individuals to have free commerce should occur before we expand the zone of corporate border-jumping.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YeGURqfslXQ&t=705s My big fear with the TPP has been an expansion and entrenchment of the existing IP system rather than moving toward a system that encourages technology to be 'public'/open source. But as with many of these trade treaties it seems the ongoing 'cultural revolution' of globalization, the real challenge, is going unaddressed. Even now Europe might abandon free continental travel because they never went all the way and committed to a United States-like federation.

If you consider globalization as a process that started when Columbus introduced Europe to the Americas then we have all benefited.

The 'Discovery' of America marks a shift from the planet having many small, simple human states towards secular transcontinental nations, mass literacy, high technology, near-instant travel, and all the other little things we take for granted today. Lots of good and bad things fit into this narrative - and it is on us to only advance the good into the future.
