I honestly barely remember the bombing of Serbia, everything from the Clinton era is kind of just a hazy nostalgia trip these days. I do remember Clinton giving some presentation as to why we were bombing in which he mentioned that failing to bring the conflict to an end might lead to simmering ethnic strife for generations, and then he said something about WWI. Authorities in Western Equatoria state have accused the South Sudan army (SPLA) in Mundri West county of killing civilians and burning Mundri town to ashes without the knowledge of the state administration, forcing local populations to flee to the bushes for their lives.

Deputy governor of Western Equatoria state, Bullen Abiatar Abui, blamed a reinforcement of the SPLA forces from Mvolo for the indiscriminate shooting, saying they started entering the area between 6th and 7th October targeting civilian settlements. “The report we have received from county authorities is that SPLA forces which came from Mvolo carried out indiscriminate attack on the civilian settlements. Their actions were unprovoked,” he said. “Now this security situation is very bad. People have fled their homes to the bush. There is no food. No shelter and now we are hearing of people being affected by some contagious diseases. The situation is extremely bad.”

He claimed most of the towns and villages in Mundri West county have been burnt by the army, leaving people without shelters. “On the 6th [of October] the area witnessed attack helicopters flying over and bombing the whole area,” he further explained.

Army spokesperson, Colonel Philip Aguer, told reporters on Friday his office had not received any report on the incident, saying he will have to ask the division commanding officer in the state for details.

The armed opposition faction led by former vice president, Riek Machar, issued a statement condemning the attack on civilians in Mundri by the government.

Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi is facing criticism after a massive red carpet was laid over public roads for his motorcade during a trip to open a social housing project in a Cairo suburb, where he preached austerity.

A local newspaper devoted much of its front page Monday to the incident. “How is the president asking us to tighten our belts while the 4 kilometre red carpet says otherwise?” read a headline in Al-Maqal newspaper.

The military provided a rare public response to the furor over the carpet. Brig. Gen. Ehab el-Ahwagy explained on several talk shows Sunday night that the carpet was not purchased by el-Sissi’s administration and had been used for more than three years on similar occasions.

“It gives a kind of joy and assurance to the Egyptian citizen that our people and our land and our armed forces are always capable of organizing anything in a proper manner,” el-Ahwagy told prominent TV talk show host Amr Adeeb. “It is laid out in a way to beautify the general area, so it gives a good impression of the celebration that is being broadcast to the whole world.”
