This makes me so loving mad and I'm not even American and I have no idea what gun control policies should be enacted. But what is it about this topic in American politics that makes everyone suddenly start talking like Donald Trump?

A serious politician can't get away with saying "we have to do something about Syria" and offer no specifics or actual ideas. Like, throw out a loving policy! Start an actual discussion instead of just telling everyone they need a discussion.

"Guys, we have to do something about [x]" is as much of a political position as "I don't like lettuce".

When the hotly debated issue is whether you should even have a national discussion on gun control, going on record with "we need to do something" is actually a valuable statement. The goal is not to propose a specific policy, the goal is to get people to realize you need to change something in the first place.

I was sure there was some mathematical metaphor there though, like you can use applied math to measure stuff and that's okay, but what's really cool is when you do pure math which isn't grounded in physical objects, and in the same way you can be a pleb concerned chiefly about physical things, or you can live in the world of the purely philosophical and Truth and Beauty and be :krad: all day because your mom slaves are doing your lunch and laundry.

Maybe I'm getting him confused with some of the other Classicals who thought that empirical observation and changing your theories was for scrubs compared to ideal thought, but he did love his Forms.

There's stuff like it in there, but it's less drastic than you remember it. Plato distinguishes (pure) mathematics from what he calls "logistics", i.e. calculations. The latter are useful for commerce and warfare and all sorts of practical stuff, but pure arithmetic deals with higher truths and is therefore better.

The background here is that in Athenian society, being a free citizen was not purely something that, once you had it, you had it made, but something you had to actively work on. Certain activities were stereotypically slave's work, so distinguished citizens had to take care not to be seen doing those activities, or their citizenship might be called into question down the line. Unfortunately calculations were part of slave work, since market stalls were typically run by slaves. This had the side effect that most Athenian citizens were pretty poo poo at math.
