There were protests all over Europe concerned with the refugee crisis today. In London and Copenhagen there were tens of thousands marching in favour of refugees. In Hamburg there were a few thousand as part of a counterprotest against a group of three dozen neo-nazis. In Bratislava it was a bit different, with more than 1,000 people protesting against Islam and immigration and about 400 counter protesters. In Warsaw about 5000 were rallying against immigrants. Meanwhile, Munich prepared for a new record influx of refugees this weekend with 10,000 arriving only on Saturday.

The Federal Criminal Police Office in Germany just released data that shows that refugees are not more prone to criminal activity than the rest of the population. At the same time right-wing terrorism and xenophobic crime are massively on the rise with more than 600 incidents in 2015 alone (in 2014 it was less than 200).

Jay Rust posted:Canada's PM is ready to accept 25,000 Syrian refugees by the end of the year. Although certainly a well-intended gesture, 25,000 is not that much. At some points this year this number was reached in less than two days in Europe. Still much better than Cameron though who praises himself because of taking in a few thousand.

drat, Romney seems almost well-adjusted compared to the current crop of Republican candidates. Last week we had around -15°C (5°F) in parts of Germany. Still, around 2000 refugees are arriving every day at the border. The current hot topic is social democratic and Green politicians refusing to appear on a TV debate for the upcoming state elections in Rhineland-Palatinate together with a representative of the new right-wing populist party AfD, who are currently at around 8%.

German federal government expecting 4 million people to arrive in Germany until 2020, including those from last year. Seeing this is both fascinating and also certainly a bit frightening to me, because it will definitely change this country and life here. Per capita equivalent for the US would be 16 million in 5 years or almost two additional New York Cities. "Grandhotel Cosmopolis" in Augsburg, Bavaria. It's a refugee housing / hotel hybrid where anyone can rent a bed and at the same time actually get in touch with the people everyone talks about.
