So a few years ago I registered a handful of domain names, thinking if I do anything with even one of them, it will justify it, and I've wound up more or less just parking them while other developments in my life got the better of my time. I've taken a quick look a couple domain name auction sites, looked at domain name auctions at ebay, and I'm not really seeing anything that really impresses me. Is the whole domain name thing pretty much a thing of the past nowadays? Are people still treating domain names as a speculator's market these days? Any way of unloading these things and maybe recouping my expenses of hanging onto them? Any recommendations, I'm all ears.

Unless some company decides they need your domain for a product, you won't get any money. Domain squatting is a very hit or miss market.
http://www.niallkennedy.com/blog/2007/05/domain-squatting.html A decent read on how scummy domain squatting can be.
