:siren:OUT NOW!! BUY OR RENT!!! PROBABLY YOU'LL RENT BUT IT'S REALLY GOOD AND THE DEVS COULD USE SOME SCRATCH!!!:siren:

FROM THE MAKERS OF THOSE MINIGAMES INSIDE THE VITA VERSION OF LITTLEBIGPLANET AND ALSO SOME MOVE CONTROLLER STUFF, IT'S

a heavy rain-esque slasher game with eight playable, killable characters. what could possibly go wrong.

until dawn has a fraught production history. it began as a ps3 move-controlled game with teens and maybe some zombies? details were always sketchy and the game dropped off the face of the earth after a few trailers, only to be revealed last august as a ps4 exclusive.

even with a rapidly approaching release date of august 25, there isn't much we know about the story. this could be a) a way of keeping things mysterious, because developers have said a basic serial killer narrative isn't enough to fill 9 hours of gameplay, or b) deliberately obtuse marketing because the game is a shambles. i've made the first preorder of my adult life on this game, so obviously i'm banking on option a.

STORY

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZjirR8hmhsY https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HAKBU7VXdUI

your guess is as good as mine. prerelease materials have focused on this handsome devil,

a masked killer stalking eight teens in a desolate cabin in the woods. the kids are there on the first anniversary of their friends' disappearance, and each character feels varying degrees of responsibility for the incident (depending on how you chooooose they feel about it! player involvement!) before things go south.

however, there have been some small indicators there's more than meets the eye. in the demos we have so far there have been some supernatural occurrences, and even though the deaths to this point have been at the hands of the killer (or your own stupid incompetent rear end, more on that later), there could be devilry afoot.

keep in mind that with the amount of variance the developers are touting and the depth of your choices, the characters can be just as foolish or savvy as you want them to be. you can investigate the strange noise by yourself or remain calm and assess the situation. every character can live and every character can die. some will die much more easily than others, no doubt.

there's some talent on hand in this department, as indie horror filmmakers larry fessenden (wendigo) and graham reznick (i can see you) were brought in to work on the script and the cast includes folks like hayden panettiere (the superhero show) and peter stormare (you know who he is). with its horror genre mishmash and a seeming willingness to indulge in camp and not to take itself seriously, fans of quantic dream gameplay might finally have a story that didn't plop steaming from the mind of that arrogant weirdo david cage.

or it could be trash. who knows.

GAMEPLAY

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WCpES5O5pvo https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=InhV7glyMl0

as you can see from the videos, until dawn has taken major cues from quantic dream's titles, with button presses, stick and controller movement and touchpad use for character actions both large and small. like all games of its type, choice has been emphasized to an enormous degree, with the game implementing a "butterfly effect" system of logging player choices and actions, with each ostensibly building on the next to create new pieces of story. characters can live or die by these choices. an example from the e3 demo shows two teens finding a flare gun in a watchtower. your character can either keep the gun or give it to your companion. will he make better use of it? will you? will you accidentally shoot yourself with it? it's up to you, presumably!

one new gameplay detail shown at e3 was the "totem," a type of item strewn throughout the game that gives you a brief hint on what could happen in the future. they're just vague enough not to give too much away, and from the one we've seen so far, will see you relying on intuition to guess what's going on and infer what you should do to prevent that outcome. you can also find "clues," which implies an ability to solve the mystery of who the killer is, etc. with enough exploration. we'll find out upon release whether this means picking up a lot of pointless items to see if they're totems, a streamlined approach where only the useful items can be interacted with, or something in between.

DEATH (WARNING: DEATH)

people die frequently in this game. sometimes the killer gets them,

sometimes they've been put in situations where they have to choose who lives or dies,

sometimes you, the player, are an idiot moron who says, "no thanks, murderer. i can kill myself just fine."

whoever dies, you can't go changing your mind and reloading a save because until dawn has AUTOSAVE, mother fucker. live with it or start the game over completely, you whiny baby. death is also permanent for each character, just like real life. expect more on this topic in my postgraduate thesis, "i'm sad about the fake people: semiotics of death in until dawn, a video game for the playstation 4 console."

CONCLUSION

i am going to play this game. i may be the only person playing this game at launch. mgsv comes out a week after, so perhaps you, too, will play this game to fill the time. some internet commenter brought up the idea of having a party where each person picks/plays a character. this is one of those ideas that sounds kind of cool until you think about the logistics of an eight-person nine-hour party where people play a video game. but hey, maybe you have seven friends who will be really into this niche title. i don't know you, or your life.

if any more details come up before release that should be included i'll add them, and of course when the game drops i'll post about it. track my satisfaction or disappointment and decide if you will pick this game up on sale or rent it or whatever. cheers, friends.

edit: i forgot to include the excellent box art.

FAQ Corner

A spoiler-laden section to be added to as frequently-asked questions pop up. Don't look at this post at all until you've beaten the game for yourself at least once.

General FAQs

Is this game any fun?
If you like interactive story games, then yeah, you'll probably like this one. It's genuinely creepy, there are three connected mysteries on the mountain that you can gradually unravel, and there's a big twist about two-thirds of the way through that's bizarre but well-executed. That said, if you don't like quick-time events or "walking simulators," this isn't your game.

The best way I've heard of recommending this game is to say it's like Heavy Rain done right, in that it doesn't take every possible opportunity to disappear up its own rear end.

It's crucial that you go into an initial run with as little information as possible; half the fun of your first game will be in the surprises, and even if you're an extremely jaded horror fan like I am, there will be surprises.

Please do not spoil the game for other players.

Is this game worth $60?
An initial playthrough will take you between six and eight hours, assuming you take every opportunity to explore for clues and collectibles. If you go back and try to experiment with other outcomes, which is encouraged by the game's trophy system (a lot of the big decisions have a trophy reward either way), that could easily mean another twenty hours or so. Reportedly, the game's manipulable enough that you can keep going for a surprisingly long time; the Gamespot reviewer says she's still seeing new things on her fourth playthrough.

What kind of horror is it?
Depends on how you play. It can get very "gore porn" very quickly if you opt to go that route, although it never quite degenerates to the torturous lengths of a Saw or an Eli Roth film. In fact, the "better" you do, which is to say the closer to survival the characters are, the less gore you'll actually see.

There's a lot of exploring intensely creepy locations while armed only with a flashlight, and the sound design is top-notch. Expect jump scares and random events that serve no purpose but to unnerve you.

Gameplay

Q) I keep failing the "Don't Move!" sections and now everyone is dead!

A) Turn off vibration in your controller. If it stays on, the vibration can mess with the lightbar and cause you to fail those setpieces. This can kill characters and is no fun! Alternately, calm your rear end down, because your heart rate going up due to Tension can jostle the controller. UPDATE: Fixed in patch 1.02!!! Hooray!

Character Deaths

Q) How can I save Jessica?

A) It's entirely determined by how quickly you, as Mike, react to her being taken. Take all the options that would get you to her faster, and don't miss any of the quick-time events along the way; there's some wiggle room here, as I fell into the river at one point and still got to her in time to save her, but there isn't a lot. If you get to the mine elevator and she asks for help, she'll be alive in a brief section near the endgame.

Q) How can I save Matt?

A) You can save Matt one of two ways. Either 1) Jump to safety instead of attempting to rescue Emily, or 2) Give Matt the flare gun and let him attempt to save Emily twice. This is only successful if Matt has disagreed with Emily about calling for help before heading up the mountain path. If he agrees with her, he'll shoot the flare gun at the tower and won't have it to prevent a grisly meathooking. Later on in Chapter 10 both he and Jessica, if you saved her, will be down in the mines. Choose to hide and pass the "Don't Move!" sections to keep them both alive.

Q) How can I save Josh?

A) Josh can only be saved if Sam finds the tattoo parlor card in Chapter 2, and Hannah's diary in Chapter 10. The tattoo card can be found when Josh asks her to help get the boiler started. The clue is in the twins' room upstairs. Hannah's diary is off to the left near the waterwheel as you trudge through the lake with Mike, playing as Sam. MEGA SPOILERS NEXT DO NOT LOOK I AM SERIOUS Josh's "death" in Chapter 4 is a fake-out. Don't worry about him being sawn in half and thinking you did something wrong.

Q) How can I save the stranger, who may or may not be Victor Milgram?

A) You can't. He loses his head no matter what.

Q) How can I save literally anyone else?

A) Don't be a dick, don't fail QTEs and don't engage in idiot horror teen behavior. Also, in the final scene, Sam has to wait until the last possible moment to hit the switch, otherwise anyone still in the lodge will be burnt to a crisp.

our burning peter stormare questions have been answered. he plays a therapist who interviews you, the player, between chapters about the game you're playing. the answers to his questions determine what kinds of scares you get and you can even give input on what characters you like or don't like. and while there is the omnipresent autosaving, you are able to look back on previous decisions and mistakes if you don't like something that happened, to try and fix it on a subsequent playthrough.

there's not a whole hell of a lot of info so far, both because footage has been teased out in small chunks and because the teens appear to be walking talking cliches, by and large. and since you choose their responses, each character develops traits as the game goes on. some of the pause screens have shown personality meters that track levels of traits for the current player character, and the strength of that character's relationship with the other teens.

the account with the stormare video i posted has a bunch of other ones, and watching the first half hour or so of the game should tell you a little about the victi— uh, playable characters.

sam: most likely the "final girl" unless you gently caress up royal, quick on her feet, most regretful of the prank that caused twin sisters hannah and beth to disappear, is literally hayden panettiere

josh: brother of the twins, a bit on the creepy side. i'm betting he's a red herring, or involved in the killings in some ancillary role. that high five is a qte, by the way

chris: a little awkward, very obviously nursing a crush on ashley. along with mike, most likely to pull pranks/tricks/etc. on others

ashley: likes chris. prone to being scared of things, but like chris, able to keep a clear head

mike: the stud of the group. took advantage of hannah's crush to lure her into an embarrassing trap and subsequent disappearance. currently with jess and probably emily on the side. will definitely not die easily

jess: the woman who has committed the crime of having sex. will be suitably punished

matt: presumably a jock, never seen without his letter jacket to remind you of this fact. dating emily. may or may not find out about her and mike.

emily: some sort of honors student? treats matt like a doormat. mike is her ex and they embrace directly in the line of sight of a stationary viewfinder. what i'm saying is, these characters are really smart.

a diligent superfan is also maintaining a very up-to-date wiki with more details. lots of supposition, though.

The thing I will say is just that it is entirely unexceptional. It does nothing surprising or unexpected and is basically on-par with like... any of the cheapo kinda-forgotten monster movies from the late 90s/2000s. It has some interesting gimmicks but rather than being actively good/bad (except some of the dialogue...) it's just... there.

Homework Explainer posted:

I can tell you twists do not change.

Basically the only thing that can really change is some minor dialogue. Otherwise there are designated points where characters can die but once they reach those points they're almost entirely written out of the plot live or die. One particular character basically vanishes for half the game live or die and only briefly reappears if they're not already dead.

Peter Stormare's stuff is super-cheesy in a fun way. The rest is just... like I don't want to call it bad because it is doing what it exactly tries to do but it's bog-standard horror. It has some cheesy fun moments, don't get me wrong, but it isn't as ridiculous as David Cage stuff or whatnot.

The movie I'd most compare it to is actually Jeepers Creepers, if you remember that one. It isn't really similar in plot but it is similar in being the same 'feel' of movie.
