Naw, silt is just a whatever block. You can run it through an extractor to get gems and poo poo. If you ran into antlion chargers, you've gotten into the big antlion pit under the middle of the desert. Tin ore is maybe worth digging up. I get the feeling that the pillars were intended to be easier if you use the spec that matches the pillar. So melee for the solar pillar, ranged for the vortex, etc. I say this because, as a ranger, i never have any trouble at all with the vortex pillar, but there's annoying mobs at all the others - the teleporting lazer eye guys at the nebula pillar, the crawlipedes and the guys that ricochet your shots back at you at the solar pillar, etc. Ever since i busted out my old turtle armor and crafted the solar whip/sword, i've not died once at the solar pillar.

TL;DR - Try switching to melee for solar.

Not that i've seen so far. Probably the devs intended for you to get infinite basic ammo only. Any advanced ammo gets used up. If it's an issue of cost, party rounds are cheaper than musket balls, do decent damage and have good velocity, plus they poo poo rainbow confetti all over the place so it looks like your target got wrecked by a pride parade.

I just wanted to set up some pressure plates so that the gate would open and close as I leave. Seems like a simple wiring project that a child could handle but I guess not. The gate opens just fine, but it doesn't close when I cross over the pressure plate on the inside. It does however close in my face when I cross back over it. If I set it up only with one pressure plate on the outside its a similar problem; it opens but doesn't close when I cross back over it. So when I try to enter again later it just shuts in my face because the door was still open.

I don't get why this happens. I mean why do the pressure plates just decide to not work when crossed from a certain direction?

Jesus friggin Christ the goblin summoner can gently caress right the hell off. That was an exercise in absurd frustration. I can't avoid him because he keeps making more and more terrain ignoring fists. Whittling down the fists takes a long time because most of my weapons are ineffective and I have to mostly ignore the regular goblins. Chasing him to make him shut the hell up massively prolongs the invasion, and the sonuvabitch usually reappeared with full health if I died trying to dogfight him. The best part, though, is getting gibbed by flying fists immediately on respawning. About three times. Consecutively.

I might have been horrifically under equipped when the pirates invaded for the first time, but at least I could hide indoors from the ship and kill the men through improvised murder holes. I'm not sure what I should be doing against this.

Well, i don't know what level of progression you're at, but i'm gonna assume you're in hardmode, because i don't think pirates invade in normal. (Feel free to correct me if i'm wrong.)
That being assumed, i'll also assume you're in early hardmode, and haven't beaten the mechanical bosses yet. If that's true, then get thee to a spider cave, and there farm the spiders for their fangs. You'll need 76 fangs in total to craft spider armor, spider staff, and queen spider staff.

Then hunt down the queen bee in the underground jungle. You want the bow called Bee's Knees and/or lots of beenades (you can craft beenades from beeswax and grenades).

Next time the little bastards invade, summon your spiders (you should be able to do 4 at that point), drop a queen spider turret, and start spamming beenades/bow-fired bee swarms at them. Also, litter the ground with those spikey balls they all drop. Keep to the air to dodge the summoner's fists, and watch your army of scuttling and swarming horrors devour the little fucks alive.

Now practice your evil laugh, you'll need to get good at it early so that later when the One True God (Space Dragon) solos the final boss for you, you can cackle like a proper villain who lets his minions do all the work.

Dammit, anyone else know any ways to kill that thing?

Get the UFO mount, highest summoner armor you can, Stardust Dragon staff, Vortex Beater, and several stacks of chlorophyte rounds. Summoner gear like Necro Scroll / Papyrus Scarab is a big plus.

Begin by summoning the One True God to the highest level you can get him. Fly all the way to one side of the map or another on your UFO mount. Begin flying toward the center of the map and summon the Moon Lord. Continuously climb or dive while flying because your UFO mount is slightly faster than TotallyNotCthulhu whilst doing so. Learn to switch between climbing and diving rapidly to dodge random projectiles like the summoned eyes. When you see the central eye on his head open, get ready, he's a-chargin his lazor. When he fires the eye laser, fly up and over his head to outrun it. You should now be going the opposite direction as you were before. Continuously fire your Vortex Beater at him throughout the fight. I rarely drop below half life using this method and even more rarely need to pop a potion. It's all a matter of training - the more you practice, the better you'll get.
