P.U.S.H.
Just got offered a job at a Fortune 500.

They want me to start on July 20th, meaning that I have to put in my 2 weeks on July 6th.

I took a pee test last Friday June 26th, that was also the day that the background test started.

My background is crystal clear, I have no problems. They just had to call my old job at another company to verify that I worked there. Everything there is settled down.

I smoked a cigarette on Thursday before my pee test, just as a stupid joke with my brother (long story). I'm not a heavy smoker, and I was just really holding the smoke in my mouth and blowing it out. I also took some vitamins/natural stuff I bought from Vitamin Shoppe about 2 days before the test (similar to libido enhancers like horny goat weed, I later found out when looking up the pills that there had been a recall because the pills had cialis and levitra in it).

So that makes me paranoid about the drug test considering that I heard some places drug test for nicotine after I had taken the test. But considering I'm not working in healthcare or anything, I was hoping that it wouldn't be a problem.

I was thinking that on Monday, I'd call the new place of hire, and tell them that I although I have nothing to hide, I feel uneasy about putting in my 2 weeks while the offer is still contingent on something that isn't done with yet. Essentially, I'd like a 100% guarantee that I will have a job at the new place before I put in my 2 weeks at my old job. Is that a reasonable/common thing to ask for? Or am I overstepping boundaries and red flagging myself.

Please let me know what you think the best course of action would be. Any serious help would be greatly appreciated.

You're not going to fail a drug test because of cigarettes or chinese viagra.

I'd say it's fine to call on Monday and ask for an official job offer in writing if you haven't already gotten one. "I don't want to leave my current employer in a bad spot by not giving them enough notice, so I was wondering when the official job offer would be ready." Don't make it about the drug test, just say that you'd like to have the offer in hand before giving your two weeks' notice and so this puts you in a tight spot. "I would like to make sure I start promptly on the 20th, but I need an offer in hand before I give my two weeks' notice. When will the official letter be sent?" Focus on the fact that you want to be responsible to your current employer and not leave them in the lurch.

Signed the offer already, everything is ready to go. They just told me that everything is contingent upon a successful background and drug test.

Since everything is contingent on the background and drug test, I don't feel secure putting in my 2 weeks in case there is a false positive or something. But if I don't put in my 2 weeks on Monday July 6th, then I won't be able to start on time for them and give my current employer proper notice.

So I'm stuck in quite a jam.

"Hey, I wanted to put in my two weeks' notice to be able to start on the 20th as planned, did the background check and everything go through okay? Oh, you don't have it done yet? I'd really like to give my current employer two weeks' notice, when will I know for sure that I have the job?"

Really, you should have made sure you would get the final offer and check done before you had to give notice. You could call today and ask if they'll be ready to finalize your offer on Monday, as you'd like to give two weeks. They want you for the job, they're not going to rip it away because you're asking these (legitimate) questions about when your offer will be finalized. Just focus on the idea that you're a good employee trying to give your employer proper notice.

At least see when the check will be complete before you start freaking out about it.

Yea good advice, I'll call them on Monday and be clear about it.

But this is pretty stressful for me, I hate this background check nonsense.

Putting in less than 2 weeks notice is the only other option. Thats pretty drat unprofessional isn't it? I'm only asking in order to prepare for the worst case scenario.

They're only testing for illegal drugs that would cause OSHA violations, they don't give a poo poo if you smoked a cigarette.

If you have a job offer contingent on the drugs test and the background check, and you are telling the truth that you are 'crystal clear', then you have a firm job offer. If anything, it is generally a red flag to behave like you are when a background check is underway. You've got nothing to worry about, so don't worry. You're either way overanxious about this or you are being dishonest about something you are worried about in your past.

I will go ahead and disagree with everyone else and say that I would not put in my notice until after the background check has cleared.

Given that there's no law forcing them to disclose the results of the background check to you, they could simply change their minds and use that as an excuse to rescind their offer. And given the behavior of employers in the U.S., that sort of thing wouldn't even surprise me.

On the other hand I've never had a company tell me when the background check goes through. I've always just gotten an offer letter contingent on passing the background check with a start date set already. They'll only contact you if you don't pass.

If you don't have a criminal record and you haven't done any illegal drugs you have nothing to worry about. Unless by "a cigarette" you mean weed there's nothing in your original post that would cause you to fail a background check. If it really was just tobacco and IF they check for nicotine, it's probably just for health insurance reasons so they can be like "hey we have proof you're a smoker you are now going to pay out the rear end for insurance" and won't affect your employment eligibility at all.

I know of a local aerospace shop that tests for nicotine and if you fail they will not hire you. They pay 100% of health insurance, require you to spend a certain amount of time per week in the onsite gym, etc.

My sister in law had a job offer rescinded because she smoked, so some companies do indeed check for nicotine in your piss. She thought it was just a drug test, but they tested for smoking as well.

I don't have anything to hide, but I still want to be sure. I have no incentive to lie to you guys, I'd rather just tell the truth so I can fully prepare. It's just my personality I suppose, I want to be sure. I don't want to let go of my main source of income until the next job is a sure thing.

What field are you in? I'm in engineering and I've never heard of people not getting hired because they smoked regular cigarettes. My company very strongly discourages smoking and makes it a giant pain in the rear end to take smoke breaks and charges more for insurance for smokers, but they can still work there.

I could see a hospital/doctor's office not wanting their patients seeing nurses outside taking smoke breaks so that makes sense.

I really highly doubt a finance job will rescind your offer for smoking, but who knows.

I work in recruiting at a large investment bank, and we strongly encourage everyone we hire to wait until the background check results are in before resigning. So many things have popped up, such as people finding out that they have been the victim of credit card fraud, that have led to them failing. If they had resigned they would have been out of a job.

We also call new hires the second they pass background so that they can put in their two weeks and we can get their start date hammered out. We usually discourage setting a target start date since it just gets everyone pissy when we don't hit that target because they didn't fill out their background application correctly.

Actually, they do have to disclose that they didn't hire you due to the background check and give you a copy of the report

From what I understand, that only applies to a credit report. Do you have a citation?

One day, this team will play to their expectations...

Just not this year..

Several months ago, I started a new job that required me to pass a background check. They did the same thing to me - targeted a start date that was sooner than the background check would allow for me to give 2 weeks notice.

I waited as long as I could to sign the papers. When it approached the day to give my 2 weeks notice, the background check still hadn't passed. I had to explain the situation to the HR lady at my new (current) company. She understood and we pushed back the start date by a week.

I don't know why companies try to set start dates earlier than the background check would allow for you to give 2 weeks to your current employer. What a bad practice.

I gave my notice a little late. It was fine. Got the job. Done soon, can't wait to have better work life balance.

It's Huntington Bank's corporate policy, as far as I know they're the biggest nicotine free US company.

I was in your boat when I last changed jobs. I managed it by telling my boss first, and saying that it was contingent on my background check coming clean, and that I had a start date already planned. I filtered the news out to other coworkers that I knew my absence would impact. It took about 7 business days after telling my boss until I got word that the background check cleared.

Once that came back, I told everybody else I cared to.

I started a job the day that the drug test I took a week prior came in, and it tested positive because I took some prescription cough medicine that week of the test that was not in my name. Lost the job and had an uncomfortable situation asking for my old job back after. Got back in though.
