Picked this game up the other day and it's pretty fun!

It feels a bit drive-on-rails which is nice and chill but at the same time the use of braking and clutch kicking all feels really good from what I've seen so far so and the game seems to balance the arcade aspect and actual driving.

The only car I've bought so far is the E30 and up until that point I wasn't really enjoying the default Mini that much even though FF handbrake pulls often make for some dramatic powerslides. Gonna save up for a hillclimb car next, I guess? Always wanted to drive an Audi Quattro and its nice to see one in this game.

Also, I'll forever like the Quattro because this picture even exists:

I dunno if we're talking about the same Quattro because I got the S1 hillclimb variant and it is nearly twice as fast as my BMW E30, easily ending up in the top 3 and taking me out of open championships in my first session up Pike's Peak despite continued terrible driving, not knowing the turns and even flying off the track.

After a bit more trial and error to actually learn the road I'm thinking this is gonna be my quick money maker until I save up for a proper rallycross car cause these hillclimbs are like $60k or more in just three high speed runs.

Thief: Buy the goddamn Stratos.

...brb crashing!

And yeah, I am new to the game but I think its safe to say that basically any RWD car is gonna be expensive fun in a world without paved roads. The E30 is still popular today on the street around here so it was my goto choice for my first purchase because it's the one I'm most familiar with of the early unlockables. If you don't care about lap times then this car is fun as hell. IRL the only people I know that have these are rich and use them to purposely go sideways.

Really though if you're gonna buy a random car get anything from Group B. I haven't been following the thread so I dunno how much its been talked about but Group B is the epitome of rally racing and it was so badass that it got banned. Cars like the Quattro just rolled up using 4WD and tore it up for the first time and then literal deathtraps like the Delta were using both turbochargers and superchargers on the same loving car :unsmigghh:

The only thing missing is hundreds and thousands of spectators standing in the middle of the track blocking your view of the turn ahead and just barely getting out of the way before you run into them.

Jehde posted:

I don't think the Quattro is as bad as most goon ITT make it out to be. The name of the game is weight transfer.

I guess its also worth noting that the French champion Michel Mouton was active then and because of it she's widely considered one of the best female racers of her time. This is the lady that set record times at Pike's Peak in a Quattro so I really doubt it's that bad of a car lol.

I'm waiting to get this until I have a top level rallycross car because I want to unlock all the modes. Also the idea of a Fiesta with 600 HP is just lol and I want to beat STIs in it. But yeah, the Delta is gonna be my Group B car I think until I have the money to try them all.

I don't know the answer to this but it is a definite sign that this is a good rally game when windshield wipers are an actual part of gameplay.

There's one event with multiple splashes at the end and one of them is right before what I can only guess is a near hairpin turn. I've taken it blind so many times because I never have time to press my wipers button when trying to juggle the throttle and possible handbrake/clutch kick to keep my momentum pushing through to the finish line to the cheers of my virtual spectators. It's great and is the best home stretch of any track I've seen so far.

Hairpin turns can go suck a dick though.

If you like using the handbrake to get the initial positioning you can start clutch kicking at low speeds to keep the wheels spinning and keep your car moving fluidly through the tight turns without that slide-stop effect that kills your time.

FF cars are good for practicing handbraking.
AWD/4WD cars are good for practicing clutch kicking.
RWD cars are good for mastering both of these while min/maxing your throttle and braking to really fine tune your way through turns.

After that you can pretty much drive wtfever you want however you want when off paved roads and see yourself crashing a lot less until you start to push your limits again.

On an actual road its usually just best to slow down and take the proper and exact grip lines.

The real secret to driving RWD cars in this game is to unweld the loving differential because it would seem that everything you buy in this game has been previously owned by an aspiring craigslist drifter that wants their wheels to squeel when slowly pulling through the McDonalds drive-thru.

edit: Generally lowering the differential (especially in the rear if that's the option) will let you be much heavier on the gas pedal without completely spinning out as often. Do this while also lowering the gear ratio in a car like the BMW E30 and you will find yourself cutting multiple seconds off your track times. At first it will feel like you are understeering but when you take into account the fact that you can casually flick your way through turns with any car in this game you shouldn't have any problem Tokyo Drifting to the finish line with green split times. :rice:

4WD/AWD are often considered the training wheels most people use to get into RWD racing.

In a rally situation the advantages you get when losing traction in a car like the WRX or Mitsubishi Evo are so great that it would seem that RWD is really for the enthusiasts looking for a challenge or wanting to really figure out how, why and when to use the handbrake or clutchkick on top of your basic throttle/brake control.

In terms of progression and looking at the prices of vehicles across the board IMO the best way to dive into it all is to drive the default FWD car until you have enough to get a Group B 4WD car. The price of 70s/80s cars in this game is around $60-120k while if you simply wait a bit you can get into the real monster group starting at only $140k.

RWD cars are fun because they're cheap, crazy and and kill you. If you care about fast racing times I would say that the next step is to jump into either R4 with the WRX/Mistubishi Evo or try Hillclimbing which all sit around the $200-300k price range. If you're gonna save up for a $600k you may as well wait for a proper Rallycross car if only to experience completely new gameplay.

The oddball choice are the Kit cars. They sit in the middle of the 4WD and RWD cars you'll have encountered by now both in terms of handling and price. They are weird because iirc they are front wheel drive but my only experience with them is a few random online challenges and I don't remember the understeering being THAT bad but they definitely feel like a weird breed of their own when you look at what else is available in this game.

edit: Goon League seems to be using Group B cars so maybe don't even bother buying one and you'll get to play them all for free :D

There's a good amount of power there but the natural understeer forces you to be very heavy in your actions while still staying rather forgiving when you push yourself over your limits. It's kind of easy mode but in a fun and flexible way that has more depth to it than the clunky Mini does.

The way you approach different sections to the track are very different compared to a RWD car and I think once you get that used to both that and genuinely capable front wheel drive cars you can really start to appreciate and fine tune your differentials in AWD vehicles to make them do exactly what you want them to do.

Keep in mind those are RWD cars. Chill out on the gas and ease into turns, you're basically steering with the back wheels. There are a lot of front wheel drive (FWD) cars in this game now that you may enjoy. Otherwise save up for a Subaru WRX, Mitsubishi Evo or Ford Focus like most people do irl because they are very forgiving and look cool.

Also when it comes to events you can reset them to select a new car iirc. This game will automatically place you in whatever difficulty you're performing at and throw tons of money at you before you know it so don't really worry about it.

Been a while but when I last played pvp rallycross the main problem with it was that it would start the race with only 2 people and as others would join they would never be able to fill the gap in the lead of the player that was there since the beginning. This causes a lot of players to quit from what I saw because every other part of this game has players racing against a clock and it makes some nerds lose track of how fun it is to be able to shoulder up with another car and run them off the track or into a wall.

It's probably my least played part of this game. The tracks are kind of boring with only the joker lap keeping things interesting. Other than that, the novelty of a high horsepower Fiesta sleeper wears off quickly.
