gently caress yeah, I love this game. Took me a while to check out this lp since I've already played it so much myself and followed TWD's playthrough, but I'm glad I finally did go through the thread because I'm still learning things I never knew about or noticed before, even so many years later- and with how many times I've run through the first half specifically, because when I first picked up FF9 as a kid it was a found used copy that had no disc 3. And when I finally met a dude who lent me the third disc, it was too mangled for my PSX to read. At least my found copy also included the 100% thorough and comprehensive strategy guide so I could fill myself in on the story But it's never lost its charm for me, and some of the setpieces were a huge influence on my own art and writing back in the day. FF9 owns and this is a nice chill lp that I'll be sure to follow now, maybe I'll start a new file and play along at home.

Mystery Sword/Sword of Doubt is one of my absolute favorite tracks, in the top three for sure. The sense of dread and finality is absolutely real. It wouldn't sound out of place as final boss or super-powerful secret boss music- almost a shame it didn't get saved for that.

First the LISA lp and now FF9 returns from the grave? It's like Christmas in June. I knew the desert was called Vube But I didn't know this NPC was like a little guinea pig man. I-I'll protect you! I would trust this pink-clad hamster man with my life

Mega64 posted:Can't be simply to revisit Morris. Oh sure, you remember Dr. Tot but you forget Morrid. And a hidden cutscene As excellent as this game's soundtrack is, the Gargan Roo music is really grating. Even in this short three-room area, but especially elsewhere.

I found that ATE completely by accident. You don't need to go down into the tunnel, I think you just need to wait until you regain control after the flashback. I guess it's not even really that obtuse since Dr. Tot tells you to go stock up on stuff before heading into the passage, but it definitely took me a few playthroughs before I stumbled on it. Speak for yourself, Zorn and Thorn are great.

If we could have Baku in our party we could just destroy everything from here to disc 4. None of this unwinnable boss bullshit, Baku doesn't give a drat that you once killed a hundred knights single-handedly. SUPER TORNADO TANTALUS PUNCH, LOSER

According to the official strategy guide (which is on a shelf right next to my desk and quicker than looking at GameFAQs) you can cure Stop with either Dispel or a Remedy. Then again, it's the official strategy guide... so that counts for pretty much jack and poo poo. WANT TO PUT A STOP TO STOP? VISIT PLAYONLINE FOR THE DETAILS!

I would wonder why she didn't notice Dagger comatose on the couch BEFORE she fought Zidane and Co., but I guess between the giant eyepatch and big swoopy hair her peripheral vision is pretty bad.

No amount of screenshots will ever convey how much I hate the goddamn annoying slog of Fossil Roo. It's one of two dungeons where my replays tend to die. The music before the chase sequence is pretty cool though, and I think I'd like this section a little better if we got to keep listening to this instead of the recycled Gargan Roo theme

Between L5 Death, Mustard Bomb, and the fire spam attack I remember Soulcage completely pushing my poo poo in the first time I ever played this game, to the point where I still get a little tense for no reason whenever I do this part. Cool boss design though, I really enjoy how creepy and alien the Iifa Tree is compared to everything we've seen so far.

Even though Morrison joins your party so late in the game and doesn't get much character development compared to everybody else he's quite solid and fun to use in battle

ApplesandOranges posted:Morrison's okay, but he doesn't really stand out that much in battle. Problem is that in a team of fairly unique characters he just kind of comes off as... bland, and since you've had two discs to already get used to everyone else in battle it's not that compelling to use him. I like him precisely for mixing things up when the good ol Steiner-Dagger-Vivi combo starts to feel a little stale. I don't feel masochistic enough to try a level 1 run, but Team Weird Random Side Characters is a happy medium. Is it too early to vote for Freya, Quina, and Morrison to take on the final boss? If you're going to include monster battles then there's that short section with just Zidane at the beginning of Evil Forest, too. But yeah, there aren't many solo fights in this game. Friends are important!

I wouldn't call FFIX 'dark', but I wouldn't call it a kiddie game either and I'll fight anyone who dismisses it as such because the character models are cartoony and not beautiful tragic anime boys (Kuja notwithstanding). The dark moments are definitely there, and you feel them when they happen because the game does such a good job of making you give a drat about the world and the characters in it, but at the end of the day FFIX is about hope. It's about finding a family and a place to call home. It's about protecting the ones you love and finding a reason to keep fighting when the bad poo poo does go down.

I always just went straight to the boat, I had no idea either of those scenes existed RE: Quina chef chat, I find it pretty unlikely that a game that does characterization and worldbuilding so well would lazily reuse a main character's model for a nameless NPC, but I also find it pretty unlikely that Quina would be appointed head chef for Alexandria Goddamn Castle, s/he's pretty clueless at the start. When Quina takes charge in Eiko's kitchen I always figured it was thanks to the experience they'd gotten from travelling with the party; remember that Quina can't even catch a single frog at first and is totally amazed that there might be other kinds of food(!!) in the world. Yeah, Esto Gaza's theme is great, and it's a shame that you barely do anything there even when the plot eventually forces you to. I've had this height chart saved on my computer for a long time but couldn't figure out who the heck that one NPC was supposed to be. You never get a good look at the bishop in-game.
