Shot in the dark, but here are a few reasons that probably exist for the anti-registration 1) They have to register everything. Pretty damned hard to since they want to claim copyright to everything the creators create, including everything that normally gets left on the cutting room floor. A single song could exist as several dozen different entities since each version from the original scratchpad to the final album version would probably technically be its own entry, then on top of that there are all the various jam sessions that could be bootlegged or inspire someone else to reproduce the same sections 2) They have to register each different part of each instance. Using the song example, there would be a bunch of different copyrights to hold; each individual instrument track as its own performance, the edited production as a whole, the words of any lyrics, the different versions of the lyrics for different languages, and all kinds of other bits 3) They have to register who actually owns the copyright. Music companies probably want to keep artists as in the dark about their contracts as possible. Tons of stories out there about artists being surprised they don't actually own their own work when they try to do something the production company says no to. I really don't think they want artists to be able to look up their own song in the database and not see a trace of their own name 4) gently caress I've effortposted too much, but the obvious thread of thought is that it's to screw the little people, let owners keep sending unenforcable C&D letters to others, and save untold hours for their legal team, not to mention the potential filing fees

So how do those work? I thought each hop in the tracert was your computer resolving the ip from whatever name was reported, but even with gtlds opening up a new world of stuff many of those aren't valid worldwide dns entries (like "oOo"). I'm assuming that your computer just pings the resolved ip, but how does it know which nameserver to query in the first place?

But if you take that $220k and buy bitcoins then you can get something like 900btc, and back before this temporary slump the real price for bitcoin was proven to be over 1200, so that means that the 900btc is actually worth over a million bucks of donations!

So I've been selling Bitcoin locally for cash every now and then. No huge amounts, but I take some % markup and do it instead of withdrawing cash from ATMs to get a better exchange rate. So far only cash. I decided to try to do it via online banking. Shortly after I set up an ad, some guy initiates contact to buy ~0.5 BTC (about 16,000 JPY), which was all I had up for offer, and says he wants 10 BTC. He has no trading history so I tell him we can do a little now and maybe more later, since I want to see that things go smooth before doing any large amounts. Shortly after, the guy writes that he has deposited 20 BTC worth of money to my account. I realize something fishy is going on and go to the bank. They say nothing is in my account. While I am at the bank, I try to deposit some cash to my account using the ATM. It doesn't work. I go to the clerk and they tell me someone from my branch (same bank, different office) will call me. I get a call and they tell me that the police has frozen my account. Today, I get a call from the police. Apparently someone has committed online fraud, stole money and transferred it to my account. They asked me lots of questions regarding how I got the money, do I know the guy, etc. I answered and told them what has happened (basically what I wrote here). They knew what bitcoins are but had not heard of Localbitcoins. As he put it, I am now in a position of being either an accomplice or a victim in their eyes. I did all the brief communications with the scammer through Localbitcoins. I will met the police again on Tuesday and they will want to see my communication with the guy. My concern is that they will be questioning all my previous Localbitcoins trades. I have not filed them, payed any tax, etc, so I am worried that this will be a problem. Also, I am on a student visa so I am not sure how they look at this trading with regards to that. On the other hand, if I delete all the communication with the guy I also delete my only way of indicating my innocence. So I am kind of stumped here. I guess I did the classic mistake of answering police questions before talking to a lawyer... Which I also have no idea of how to get in touch with someone that will not cost a fortune and has a basic understanding of English and Bitcoin. TLDR: Trading BTC on Localbitcoins, some guy deposits huge amount, account gets frozen, now the police wants everything from me. Worried that earning money from previous trading without filing taxes will get me in trouble. What should I do?

I guess the only code-based solution that didn't need extreme individual proof would be to invalidate any transactions that were sent to an address that sent to gox storage (the intermediary step being unique wallets for tracking deposits). That would basically free all deposited coins from the black hole, and all coins that were spent from the storage address would just be "oh well" dupes that would be ignored to keep the history of the market stable, but lol at the shitstorm that even that would generate. Off the top of my head * This wallet with 1000btc was mine but I deleted the private key * The above, shouted by a thousand different people * the amount of whiners that would go on about how unfair it is for the victims to get their coins back and how they should have learned a lesson * The enormous price crash from everyone cashing out at once * The enormous price rise from the advertising it would generate * The pressure to do it again for every minor scam in existence * The fact that it would prove coins aren't immutable at all

drat it, I made a story to troll for changetips to fund the butt/coin addresses but it was already deleted. drat you thermos! Oh well, enjoy my :effortpost: fanfiction I'm an ex-Buttcoin-shill that got fired on Friday, AMAA First, I may as well say that there's no point in asking who my employer was. A) It was a shell "customer outreach" company with an extremely generic name, and B) While I don't fear for my *personal* safety, I do fear for my financial future. The powers that want to crush Bitcoin are large, and I can't risk never rising to a position higher than an Amscot desk clerk. Now to the actual heart of the matter. I went to an end-of-year job fair a few months ago and really hit it off with a group of people at a booth for a well-known company. After talking about my major and strongest classes for the 30th time that day, they switched the subject to social media accounts. They asked me about Twitter, Facebook, Reddit, Tumblr, and believe it or not, 4chan. I played dumb about 4chan ("I know of it") and told them I don't really spend any time on Tumblr, but they were visibly excited that I'm into Reddit and FB. I filled out a pretty generic application and went on my way. A week later I got an email from the unnamed shell company that introduced itself as "supported by" the large company from the job fair. They were given my application and said that I was a perfect fit for their new social media campaign. I figured that meant the usual ad copy writing, so I told them I was on board. It was sold to me as a work-from-home position at 15 hours per week (10 minimum, 15 maximum) for $18.65 per hour, paid every other week as a 1099 contractor. Once I signed up, I was given an account to the dashboard which had a time clock start/stop and showed a list of assignments. The assignments were sorted by website, but the only one visible to me was Reddit. When I opened the Reddit assignment, it gave a summary of "competitor talking points" and "suggested responses" which were basically scripted comments to post whenever I see them. The CTPs were things like "Bitcoin will continue to rise" and "The current/conventional/"fiat" money system is exploitative". The SRs had links to bubble charts and phrases like "Dutch tulips"; in hindsight the SRs were pretty insulting or strawmanny, but I hardly paid attention at the time. To get paid, you needed to take screenshots of your posts and submit them to each CTP. I was on autopilot for a couple months. Once I had the swing of things, I opened up the dashboard in the morning, picked a CTP from the list, and just looked around Reddit during the day. Once I saw it, I pasted a reply or two, and went on my way. I'd normally just leave the dashboard clocked in at home all day to max out my time - quick and easy way to make more than $550 every 2 weeks. Then I started actually reading and paying attention to what I was "writing" and the responses I was getting. I realized that the SRs were basically just perpetuating the 1%'s talking points and that the CTPs actually made sense. I kept with the posts for about another week, but the guilt kept gnawing at me that I was a cog in big money's machinery. Last week I chose my last CTP from the list, but instead of pasting the SR (which was actually *making fun* of the $500 "half price bitcoins"), I sympathized with the poster and told him that Bitcoin's growth is inevitable. I submitted that post for the CTP, and when it was reviewed on Friday I was apparently locked out of the dashboard and told by email that I'd be receiving a prorated check for my final week. Bastards didn't even have the courtesy to tell me I was fired. Oh well, at least I still have my soul and soon I'll have my first Bitcoin.
