Racism is confusing mutable behavior with immutable characteristics like skin color. E.g., to think that a black American cannot hold unfavorable opinions of African people, merely because he is black, is racist.

So on what grounds is Obama having to answer for whether or not he is a racist? And if we could go back to pre-2008 when the accusations started that'd be terrific.

Obama's the head of state of the United States of America. He signs off on drone-striking arabs on the other side of the world because their lives are deemed to have less value than those of his electorate. That alone makes him a figurehead of a racist system, in which he plays a knowing, willing and fairly significant part. Also, he presides over a country that disproportionately executes, imprisons and otherwise discriminates against people on the basis of ethnicity. That he's half-black doesn't really diminish the role he plays in perpetuating that injustice, even if only by continuing to permit such injustices to take place. As for having the gumption to say that women are entitled to not have their genitals mutilated, that's pretty irrelevant to whether he's racist or not.

SedanChair posted:It was never even particularly legit to frame criticisms of African homophobia as racist anyway. As always you have to look at the person making the criticism and their motives. If racist people try to bring it up, it's racist as well as homophobic (not to mention an insincere, fake argument). If the person bringing it up isn't a racist, neither is the criticism. You can't possibly believe this boneheaded Aristotelian claptrap. How can you tell if someone is racist or not if the racism of their speech and actions is indexed to the racism of their character?

Smudgie Buggler posted:You can't possibly believe this boneheaded Aristotelian claptrap. It's generally pretty blatant when someone is concerned about young women or LGBT people and trying to make positive changes in their lives versus someone who is using minority rights as an excuse to dehumanize Africans and justify imperialism and conquest. Most of the second group reveal themselves right away by being generally anti-gay and anti-woman except in the few instances when it's black people doing all the things they want to do here. The few who disagree with the practices themselves but are still racist are almost as obvious because they're the European supremacist Dawkins types.

Also lol I'm darker than your lily white rear end, so obviously I can be less racist than you if I were to spout the same bullshit.

That seems like a bad opinion. Obama isn't racist and neither are the people you're trying to mischaracterize. There's perhaps a point on relativism to be made (you can't separate good & bad from social norms that cleanly), but being relativistic is not exclusive to having conviction (you just have to own it). The sentiment being expressed, 'it's necessary to forget/trash the past/traditions' is the starting block for progress. That includes anti-racism, being that race is a retroactively imagined pedigree, which you've got to forget/dismiss. So even if you're going to mischaracterize leftist here, the...uh...'more accurate' strawman would be imperialism, not racism. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tblx00nIZB0 rudatron fucked around with this message at 07:04 on Jul 27, 2015 |
