Project Quarm status: maybe wait a day or several before checking it out

concurrent players was around 2000 before servers went down a bit ago

They've upped spawns to compensate, I tried to buy my poison spells at the shaman vendor in Innothule yesterday and could not get through the wandering kobold hunter hell. I'll bet turning in lightstones in Ro is a nightmare too

Thanks pals!

Given that Quarm has ~1600-1800 people on at prime time with a bottom-heavy population, I'm going to assume that Befallen, Nybrights and Unrest are 24/7 permacamped for the foreseeable future.

Befallen is apparently pretty quiet according to guild chat. It's a pretty gnarly dungeon for that level though, very cramped and you need keys to escape the lower levels if you can't gate

yeah original EQ was dark as hell, especially if you were one of the human races. I remember needing a torch to find my way into blackburrow

Quarm got an article in PC Gamer: https://www.pcgamer.com/why-the-original-1999-version-of-everquest-is-still-one-of-the-best-mmos-to-play-today/

Secrets has further lowered dungeon respawn times from 8 to 5 minutes "in anticipation of new player influx" which seems a little aspirational lol. Good time to farm for your Paw of Opolla though

Think they are turbo increasing spawn times and drop rates for the legacy items.

If it was just guise it'd be one thing but it's with all of them. Them doing this will completely destroy balance on the server long term IMO.

Will it? I never played past Kunark but if the end state is PoP I think everything is outclassed or neutered by then

Manastone - doesn't work in planes or expansion content, definitely has a impact on pre-planar content with every caster having one
Rubicite BP - Ceremonial Iksar Chestplate regen is better, fungi tunic regen is way better
Other rubicite - lots of people will be red for a while
GBS - Not really relevant
Fishbone Earring - Kedge is a lot more popular with everyone having easy access to this, but more and more breathing stuff gets added later
Guise - lots more people can bank confidently in Neriak

If the fungi tunic is real I think the most likely explanation is some rando got it for snitching on a CSR and the PF guy decided to spend 100k or something to buy it, but any of the possible explanations are funny

New implementation of raids on Quarm, Secrets has decided to just go with instancing plus weekly/bi-weekly quakes instead of the not-instancing-but-basically-instancing daily guild rotational spawns

quote:

Private Guild Instances Are Available, Quakes Return!
Due to overwhelming player feedback about casual accessibility, and my own intuition on the subject, we've overhauled how raid rotations work - by scrapping them and replacing them with private guild instances. Don't worry, competition is still available via an overhauled Earthquake system!
Guild instances are accessible via the Knowledge book near any adjacent-to-raid zone where the tryout books were formerly present.
Guild instances require an officer from your guild, 12 guild members, and 18 players total in a raid to enter, as well as the requirement of all members in your raid being over level 30.
Guild instances have a combat engagement requirement equal to the above. If you do not meet the engage requirement above, players are forced to their bind point on any combat action, including friendly heals.
Guild instances have heightened respawn when compared to normal instances. This means that every raid creature may not share the same timer as open-world creatures.
If your corpse becomes unretrievable in a guild instance, fear not: The Graveyard system from Planes of Power is active in these zones, and your corpses will be dispensed every 2 hours to the adjacent zone where the zone-in book is located.
Guild instances do not award loot for any other creature than the raid target(s) in question. For the current instances, this is the following:
Nagafen's Lair (Instanced)
Lord Nagafen - 7 Days
Giants (all) - 24 Hours

Permafrost Caverns (Instanced)
Lady Vox - 7 Days

Kedge Keep (Instanced)
Phinigel - 24 Hours

Please note that if not otherwise specified, creatures in instances have 24 hour respawn rates, and give significantly reduced experience. (virtually nothing)
Guild creation has been disabled via petitions until a lockout system has been created for the Guild Instances.

EarthQuake revamp
Earthquakes are now scheduled to occur every 3 to 7 days.
Earthquakes now have a duration of three (3) hours.
Earthquakes no longer have a ruleset. Server Rules 9.x and 10.x are suspended during earthquakes for raid zones. Please assume that if your zone doesn't give a message about NPCs being re-popped, that you have to adhere to rules 9.x and 10.x still.
The current zones considered to be raid zones are:
Permafrost Caverns
Nagafen's Lair
Kedge Keep
On an earthquake triggering, everyone in the zone is evacuated to the zone-in to ensure fair competition. If you wish to avoid the evac, position yourself outside of the zone.
Earthquake timers are now visible to guild leaders and officers ahead of their trigger time. No more batphones. Typing '#showquake' will allow a guild officer or leader to view the next earthquake time.
Earthquakes no longer have guild engage requirements due to the rule 9.x and 10.x suspension during the three hour period, and thus can be pickup grouped.

Well it changes three basically worthless drops to be merely Bad (and probably takes a bite out of the Pearl Kedge Totem market.) We'll see what she does with the planar stuff but the three changes so far seem pretty marginal, especially with planes releasing in a couple weeks

Population is already going down. Granted it's still much higher than I thought it might be at this point but it's been decreasing lately. I imagine we will see a sharp decline once legacy stuff stops dropping. Everyone anticipates that I figure. Would be something if Secrets decided to leave them in to stave off a population drop. Concerning the other changes I don't think there will be too much awful backlash towards onesy-twosy changes but as was mentioned the inconsistency and firing from the hip will erode player trust over time. I'm still not ruling out That One Big Change that makes pop drop over night but maybe that won't happen. Also have to figure that Secrets has some pretty thin skin if you've ever caught her streams so we shall see.

I think there could be a small bump when planes come out. A ton of people are done leveling and just logging in to raid right now, Jan 1st there will actually be content again

The legacy stuff is kind of a mystery right now though:

So most of it will stop dropping Jan 1st (except Jboots, those will still drop off Drelzna) but there's some other system, in addition to the casino (which I assume will be a big plat sink), which will make legacy items not significantly valuable somehow? No clue what that could be (and she says the items will "still have value" so presumably they won't just become No Drop)

Week 1 top 20 damage parse from one of the easier Plane of Sky bosses on Quarm. Pets are still king but geared rogues are getting up there. Monks usually do decent damage too, I think we had only one and he was dead somewhere

Yeah not a lot new the last couple weeks, there's probably going to be some kind of seasonal event next week (but Secrets is busy moving, so maybe not.) Biggest recent change is making the island 6 and 8 bosses in Sky drop 2 quest items instead of 1

Should have scheduled Kunark earlier, 9 months of classic is a lot. It's still pulling around 900-1100 primetime population though

It'll be interesting to see how many people stick with Iksar shaman after Kunark opens to everyone. For a month it'll be the only healer available to Iksar players

Shaman in general is a bit stronger on Quarm than on p99 since you can give your dog weapons, if you're handing the dog weapons and keeping haste and strength up the dog will usually outdamage everyone other than the three "real" pet classes (monks and rogues will outdamage it handily once they get Sky / Kunark gear though.) I think it might fall off hard in Kunark but the extra damage should still help a lot in tandem with the rest of the shaman toolset that comes online then

I made ~15k farming giants, about 15k farming petrifin+shardwing before planes came out and another 15k or so farming djarn with small groups. Probably another 10-20k from random dungeon drops while leveling and flipping stuff in EC

These numbers have changed a lot with the economy, but before planes came out I mathed out rough plat per hour from some of the big cash camps:

Djarn was tops at 5700pp an hour (I dont think anyone is soloing this at 50. Very easy to wipe on the way in even with a full group, gnarly corpse retrieval if you do)
Froglok King + Tactician was second at ~3100pp (rarely camped and I've heard of enchanters soloing king, but their drops are Lore so you need to deal with that)
Frenzied ghoul was 1750pp (Regularly soloed by necros and I think enchanters, probably doable by shaman if you have a feign ring from Sky, not sure about mage, rare big money drop is Lore but his 300pp common drop is not, usually camped anyway)
Petrifin+Shardwing was 1680pp (Very easy to solo at 50 for a pet class, but this was only a good camp because most people didn't know where/how petrifin spawned, someone in my guild discord mapped the placeholders. Also very RNG dependent, Petrifin is the big money but is a very low spawn chance so you can get unlucky and never see him. Prices on these have crashed hard so don't even bother now imo)
Ghoul Lord was 1450pp
Assassin + Supplier was 1250pp (Not sure anyone solos these? Usually camped)
Froglok Noble was 790pp (pretty easy to solo on my shm, maybe close to giant money pre-planes since you'd be killing a lot of other frogs too, probably not worth now),

I was able to pull around 800-1300 raw plat an hour killing Rathe hill giants on my shaman if it wasn't ultra crowded, so when you factor in all the time it takes to sell stuff in EC thats probably always the way to go if you're not an elite gamer who can solo the king/tactician spawn, but I have no idea how crowded Rathe gets now

This is a super helpful writeup, thank you. I think the first thing I need to do is make a better soloing character, probably a pet class.
