How does it look through your eyes? Let's Play Atelier Shallie

1...2...3...4...5...6 PS3 Ateliers?!

You got that straight. 2014 / 2015's Atelier Shallie: Alchemists of the Dusk Sea is the sixth Atelier on the PS3 (not counting Atelier Rorona+, a remake), and the third entry in the Dusk Trilogy (Ayesha's Japanese title was "Alchemist of the Ground / Land of Dusk", something that was kind of lost in its localized name, Escha obviously was the "Sky", and we have the "Sea" now). As stated in the previous two threads of mine that have covered the Dusk Trilogy, in this world, humanity finds itself on the brink of cataclysm and desolation, the eponymous Dusk. The causes run deeper than any one man can so far find, but that has not stopped several individuals from finding their own solutions, and making their own stories. This time, we join Shallistera Argo (the girl in the red / orange dress) and Shallote Elminus (green-haired girl), as they unite their very distant lives and goals toward returning water to a parched land. The road may not always be easy, but they've got more than a few folks helping out. Many of whom we've seen before.

As far as the game's somewhat confusing name goes, Shallistera (whom Shallote nicknames Stera to avoid confusion with herself) and Shallote (whom Stera nicknames Lotte, for the same reason), have the same nickname - Shallie. As far as the two protagonist thing is executed, it may be fairly compared and contrasted with Escha & Logy. To Gust's credit, it is far from a simple retread.

So what does Gust do with the Atelier game plan this time?

Well, the game is structured rather differently from Escha or Ayesha. Indeed, its most valid comparison would be either Rorona or Meruru (the first and third PS3 Ateliers, respectively), strangely enough. This game is divided up into 10 chapters. At the start of each chapter, your heroine is tasked with something related to advancing the story. This may be investigating new lands, defeating a special monster, or any number of various tasks. Once this plotline task is completed, the chapter opens up and you're allowed to embark on various subquests, what the game calls Life Tasks. Life Tasks take on a myriad of distant forms, from synthesizing new items with special properties, breaking barrels, talking to people, exploring, defeating boss monsters, etc. etc. etc.

Completing enough Life Tasks allows you to end the chapter and proceed to the next one, where the cycle repeats. Once you reach Chapter 10, however, you are very quickly given your final storyline task, and from then you can proceed to do anything and everything you want before completing the final objective. However, once you complete the objective, you are more or less locked into completing the game, so make sure all your affairs are in order before you finish up.

One final important difference from every previous Atelier is that the time limit is GONE. The game does not track in any way whatsoever how long you spend traveling, or gathering new materials, or anything. This, more than anything, changes how Shallie is played and veterans of the Atelier series on the PS3 may initially be caught off-guard, because the gameplay expectations between Shallie and the other five are pretty different. But, I think we'll figure something out.

Ah, but we can be expecting the Sylphid touch, eh?

Indeed. The natural extention from what I did in the Escha thread would be to write my own dialogue for all characters, when I deem appropriate. And this is just what I'll do. As you might expect, italics indicate anything I make up, plain text is the game's own. Otherwise, a full 100% playthrough, including all sorts of bonus videos and a tour of the game's DLC dungeon, and the two DLC characters, seems sensible to me.

However, I will not promise to complete ALL Life Tasks, as there's no particular point to completing all of them, or to reach Combat or Alchemy Level 99, since that's really more effort than is necessary for a comprehensive playthrough, but that may just be a natural consequence of me playing the game through again (a completely new game playthrough for Stera, New Game+ for Lotte). Rest assured I'll cover all content that is remotely interesting to a prospective audience.

I heard you talking about Atelier artbooks in the Escha thread...

And I stand by it. For those that missed that particular announcement, when I was LPing Escha, I had come into the possession of all three artbooks for the Dusk Trilogy. I love this trilogy, and hopefully these three threads taken together will show you why. To that end, I acquired all three artbooks, and I intend to post all kinds of extras in the thread that are in those books, and in those books only, such as very rough concept art for characters, interviews with some of the staff, and various other interesting tidbits.

Though I do not speak any Japanese, there are more than a few ways to get around something like that. How I'll do it has yet to be decided, but hey, there's always hope.

Spoiler Policy

I have never had a particular problem with spoilers in any of my threads, but typical spoiler rules are fully in effect here. No talking about future events except in spoiler tags blah blah blah.

Huh...that was kind of a long OP, huh? Well, I said what I wanted to say. For those who have followed along with my Atelier threads, and folks who are new to my Atelier LPing crusade, I swear to finish the Dusk Trilogy with all the care and respect it deserves.

Endgame Post

So, in lieu of awkwardly trying to explain the high-level alchemy you're almost expected to do at the end of the game (Chapter 10) in an actual update, I decided it would be best to explain this stuff in an OOC post, covering all the odds and ends of doing alchemy with powerful traits and ingredients. Keep in mind, aside from the alchemy I do, the choices of what traits to use are your choice. I'll merely explain how you maximize whatever path you take.

Let's start, appropriately, at the beginning. To even get the traits you need, you'll need powerful prey to drop them. In Chapter 9's free roam, Solle will give whichever alchemist you're playing the game as with the heads up that a bunch of powerful monsters have shown up around the Dusk Sea. This is your cue that you can begin grinding powerful ingredients. There are a bunch of them, but the three you should be most concerned about are the Silver Dragon at Geofront, the Phoenix of the Sea at the Altar of Spirits, and the Servant of the Beast King in the Herb Garden -Depths- I've already shown, in the previous update, where the three are. Anyway, the Phoenix and the Dragon are going to be your primary source of powerful traits at this point of the game. The Silver Dragon's gimmick is that it is resistant to a lot of attacks (most blunt-type attacks and magic attacks. Everyone's normal attack except for Lotte and Solle, I believe, will be able to inflict normal damage on it. It's also a pretty powerful monster, so don't assume he's a total cakewalk. it's also good to know he takes normal damage from every element, so you don't need to worry about those resistances.

His real gag is that after a set number of turns passes, he'll transform into a much more powerful monster, and your fight will drag on for quite a bit longer. There's two different enemies he can transform into, but both are strong monsters. But since we're grinding, you're going to want to avoid that stage. Throw everything at the first form, and if you beat it, you'll get a drop that looks something like this.

The Pendelook has the traits Count Super Enhance (increases the power of an item significantly by the amount of uses it has left) and Traditional Soul (adds 50 PP to any synthesis that trait is in, with a maximum PP of 99). The Diamond Gemstone has the trait Valorous Soul, which provides various increases to a weapon's attack. This is just an average drop (with a possible drop count of four. Use Jurie's Unseen Attack to increase item drop rate), but it contains our golden boy Traditional Soul, which you'll need for funding almost all of your powerful end-game traits.

Now, the Silver Dragon, and all of his ilk, do respawn, I'm just not sure of the rules of when or how they do. It has something to do with other locations you visit, which is why I mentioned the two other bosses. Phoenix is an interesting fight, in that it will pass on two of its turns, with the gimmick that the third time it gets a turn, it'll launch a devastating line-up of six powerful attacks in a row. You shouldn't let it get to this point, obviously. The Servant is simply a powerful physical attacker without any particular weaknesses (he is strong against Fire and Water), but without gimmicks. Once your rotation or thereabouts is complete, return to Stellard, and the Silver Dragon should respawn.

You may be asking, why the Silver Dragon? That's because it'll provide the best traits on average, but the Phoenix will give the most experience, and a good trait or two of its own (in fact, this end-game trait grinding is a good way to get a lot of EXP. The Phoenix will give about 4 times the experience the Dragon will, with the EXP number dropping dramatically once your characters are past level 80.

Anyway, keep that rotation going, and get the traits you want. Now, it's on to the alchemy aspect of it.

This was taken in the latter parts of my synthesizing, but the point always remains. So, how do you move the traits you want to the equipment you want? This is the point of this post, and what I'll do my best explaining.

All things begin with the Traditional Soul. I had an incredible bout of misfortune regarding that trait, as it only showed up once in like 6 hours of grinding. And just for the record, like a lot of powerful end-game traits, you can't create it by combining two more common traits, so don't ask. It happened to be on a material called the Dragon Bone from the Silver Dragon, which was an unfortunate occurance, as the Dragon Bone is a (Dragon Material) item. There's only one synthesis that could have resulted in the outcome I wanted: the Sun Flower. The Sun Flower is an alchemy level 70 item that needs 9 Scrap Metals (from the factory area where we got the first automaton as Lotte way back when), 1 Dunkelheit, one Aroma Materia (another high-level synthesis. Alchemy level 50 something, and a very valuable synthesis item in its own right), and a Dragon material.

The reason I wanted a Sun Flower was because it's an ingredient in several categories. It counts as a (Jewel), (Ancient Power), (Metal), and (Elixir). Once I got the Sun Flower made, I obviously put Traditional on it and began spreading it around. That's the way it goes. Unless you are supernaturally lucky at getting that trait, you need that trait on items all over the place. Create Supplements (you should only be interested in Rainbow, Black, and White Supplements, though the other four have their uses), anything that falls into one of those four categories. Just keep spreading it around, and if you think you have enough items that have it, you're wrong.

So once you're done spreading it around, time to start preparing your synthesis items.

This is an average synthesis. Why do I have so many Earth-type alchemy skills on this synthesis? Surely I don't need all of them, you say. You only have half the story looking at that screenshot. First, check out how good this Mysterious Cloth is (the Mysterious Cloth is a good item to add armor-enhancing traits to, by the way). 378 quality, with a quality cap of 999. How in God's name did I get that? There's no sorcery here, just good ol' fashioned synthesis. Higher quality will just increases the effects (damage dealing, stats, etc.) of the item. Higher is better, of course.

Check what all the ingredients have in common. With the exception of the Slag Core, they all have an Earth value (the Super Pure Water has an Earth trait attached called Attribute Earth, which adds Earth to any item that doesn't already have it. When you add two alchemy skills that have the same attribute (so, for example, if I added Med. Ingenuity and Property Level+ for Wind), I would get Chain Bonus x2. If I added Equip. Frame- Level 2 next, and that material still had slots to put alchemy skills in (or the next material in the synthesis also had a Wind attribute), my Chain Bonus becomes x4. You keep going, and going, and you keep doubling that number.

You could get around Chain Bonus x16,000 if the cap on the Chain Bonus wasn't 5000, and every item in the synthesis had four alchemy skill slots, but that's plenty (and when you run out of alchemy skills of an element, the Chain resets with a new element.). What you want to do next is leave two slots open. One is the Earth skill Chain Effect, which increases the effect of an item in proportion to the Chain Count (which is how I got that Mysterious Cloth up to 378), and Number / Count level 3. For an item like this, that increases the number of that item that comes out of the synthesis (here, I'd get five Cloths) or for items with a use count, it increases the number of times you can use it.

Just as a side note, with Miruca, the Chain Count can go up to 7000.

Here we go with the actual alchemy we're interested in, making superweapons. Now, whether it's armor, weapons, accessories or healing items, it's always the same. You want powerful traits mixed with PP increasing traits (Traditional Soul is 50, PP Frame Expansion is 8, and PP Frame Maximization is 20. Added together with your alchemist's base PP, that's easily 99) on the items you want. If you don't find it from a drop, you can artificially create Expansion with PP Expansion +3 and +5 in the same synthesis, and Frame Maximization comes from PP +5, which is pretty common, and +7, which you can get by getting Property level 3 with a Red Supplement.

It would be simpler if you could just have all the traits you wanted on one synthesis ingredient, but this is rare. It's not critical, anyway. Now, let's check out how I made this Meteor (Stera is the only one who can use this. It's probably her best attack item, since it also has a timed effect, meaning when you use Meteor, it'll drop three more times before it goes away).

All those Fire skills in a row, I've already explained why I do that(with the Leichester Meteorite Iron needing Attribute Fire), but the last one is Equip Frame+ Level 2. Why I used this, I will shortly explain.

Jumbo Blessing is the reason. That trait increases the power of an attack or healing item x10 depending on how many equip slots it takes up (up to a maximum of 9). That means you can almost double the power of an attack item with a single trait, depending on how much room it takes up. Quality always trumps quantity when it comes to attack / healing items in this game. Huge Damage with Numbers "Massively enhances attack items by a fixed amount. Weaker power results in stronger enhancement." Which means I probably could have better spent this slot elsewhere, but eh. Things worked out. Property Super Enhance massively increases the effect of an item depending on the properties present. What this means, is that the higher PP the cost of the traits on your item, the more that trait increases the power of the item. Since these traits together cost me 96 PP, that's a *huge* increase.

This is another accessory I like a lot. The Treasure Grimoire might not objectively be one of the best, but it does provide one significant buff: significantly increasing the power of Ultimate Attacks (Ultimate Mastery). I usually like to put this on a few characters, as it'll make Ultimate Attacks hit like a runaway train powered by a jet engine packed with nitroglycerin. In my battle against the ultimate final boss, Keith broke the damage scales of the game. The game said he hit for 53,320, which is perfectly respectable, but the numbers just didn't add up. The boss had more than 80,000 HP left before his Ultimate. When I actually did the math, the final attack actually hit for 153,320. It's the most damage I've ever seen any of my characters do.

For this Grimoire, Lord of Day provides HP regeneration and a chance to avoid KO, Earth Spirit resists turn delay attacks and increases the assist recovery rate, and Sky Soul both increases assist effects and increases the amount of Burst Gauge filling each attack by that character does. Not a terribly exciting line-up, but certainly a solid, supportive one.

For Lotte and Stera, your accessories should be different. Since their primary role is to survive and use items to support everyone else, you should focus on defensive accessories / traits. This Gold Coin of Fortune increases MP and defense (Water Spirit), HP and attack (Fire Spirit), and increases all stats except for resistances and fire and water resistance (Sunlight). I only made this for the Avoid KO-S (gives a small chance to avoid a KO, as the name might suggest), and because it's a fairly easy accessory to get good traits on.

This accessory is available to both alchemists, contrary to what I first believed. From top to bottom, the highest level effects get you larger than expected damage (higher level increases this effect), automatically revive from KO (only when that character's turn comes up), increases damage of critical hits by 15%, and increases damage in Burst Mode by 5%. For traits, I went with Light God (bestows damage reversal and neutralizes all negative status effects), Lord of Night (increases critical hit chance and chance of dramatically reducing wait time after an action), and Dark God (increases speed and reduces skill wait time). Considering all you should be using is skills, an incredibly valuable trait.

This is what I have weapons for Keith. For all my characters, I went with some combination of Persisting Attack (power / skill power increase), Valorous Soul (which does much the same thing. These two traits stack), Twin Burst (significantly increases the amount of Burst Gauge percentage added per attack. Makes getting into Burst Mode much easier), and Chaos Attack, which is much the same as Persisting Attack. It's not very imaginative, but you can hardly argue with results, eh?

For armor, the choice is between Combat Shirts or Divine Shirts. Divine Shirts have better stats, and DMG Cut-L reduces incoming damage by 10%, hardly an inconsiderable amount, but Combat Shirts give you a pretty strong chance of avoiding a KO. The choice is yours. For traits, you could do much worse than Evolves the Body, Enhances the Body (base stats increase by 10%), and Tough Body (base stats increase of 15%, and +30 to defense).

For the last part of this post, let's talk the Elixir, since it's by far the most valuable healing item and pretty much makes all others obsolete. Now, this Angel Powder is an indirect, but important step. The reason I made this with these traits is that the Angel Powder can move ingredients from a Supplement to a (Medicinal Ingredient), which in turn can be applied to a Medical Solution (the Solution is an excellent transfer item to weapons, armor, accessories, or healing / attack items), and the Solution can be applied to the Elixir in the (Mystery) category.

The Elixir itself is an alchemy level 74 item, and requires a Dunkelheit, (Water), (Mystery), and (Elixir).

Now, under normal circumstances, I could jack all the Effects on this thing all the way, but that's not what you want to do, for the sake of the Wind effect (which, at its highest value, has no effect, but second highest removes all negative status effects). You can see all the usual PP enhancing suspects, but take note of Low Energy Mode on the Super Pure Water and Reuse Resources and Auto Material on the Ancient Tree Splinter (quite a lucky break to get those two in one, actually). By the way, Low Energy Mode, unless you find it as a property on a material, can also be acquired by combining Recycle and Recycle+ in the same synthesis. You can find these traits on the Junk / Scrap Metal and the Small Relic, respectively.

This is about ideal, as the Elixir takes up fairly little space, has all the best possible effects. I wish I could have gotten the effect value a little higher, but I'll just have to accept this as a result.

Perpetual Motion means the use count of the item will never go down, but it consumes the alchemist's MP instead. Not a big deal, since it will immediately be replaced by the MP Recovery XL. Auto Material turns the Elixir into a timed effect and is automatically used when an alchemist's HP falls below 25%, and Blessing of Strength grants a massive (about 40 points) attack increase to all characters affected by it. Perpetual Motion and Auto Material (or any "Alchemist falls below x health in battle, automatically used" traits) are your primary targets here. You can put anything you want in the third slot. Totally up to you.

Honestly, I may have to revisit the Elixir, since 25% is not great, and you can get an auto-use up to 60% with the trait Auto Use. We'll see how things work out, and it wouldn't be that hard to get those traits back.

Edit: turns out things worked out marvelously with this Elixir.

As a postscript, I am not saying this is the only combination of traits, accessories, attack items, armor, weapons, etc. that will guarantee success. With the high level alchemy in this game, and the wide variety of traits available to you, there are any number of choices that will all have the same chance of success I had when going up against the two most powerful bosses in the game. Hopefully this was informative, and any questions will be addressed appropriately as edits to this post.

Part I: The Near Side of the Dusk Sea

Music: Rusty Sky

Golden clouds are sailing in the sky.
I'm standing on thin ice.

Black night is coming from above.
No one can escape. Nowhere to hide anymore.

We'll fall into an endless sleep
A gentle breeze touches my cheeks
Thin ice mirrors the sky burning

We know the world slowly makes all go back to the start
All of our wounds need to heal more or to get worse

Invisible forces lead us to where we belong
We're looking for reasons to resist or to surrender

I pluck nails stuck deeply in my feet to try to walk again
Black night is coming from above

No one can escape
Nowhere to hide anymore
We'll fall into an endless sleep

A gentle breeze touches my cheeks
I feel I'm helpless
Time won't stop

We know the world slowly makes all go back to the start
All of our wounds need to heal or to get worse

Invisible forces lead us to where we belong
We're looking for reasons to resist or to surrender

Fading light

You're so far away

We're burning and frozen

I walk to you

Music: Disappeared Water

The Dusk World

...I can't believe it. Is it true the water in this city is drying up?

Yes.

But it seems like there's still so much of it... What are you going to do?

Are you sure the results of your investigation are accurate?

I'm positive. Central is concerned about this situation too, you know.

I don't buy it. Our little far-town isn't enough to warrant their attention.

Stellard is the only city with a water source in this region. If it dries up or disappears, it will affect all settlements in proximity, and they'll wither and perish. The Dusk Sea will swell, and slowly, eventually, consume everything. It's not just your problem anymore. Understand?

...

The Dusk Sea will consume everything, huh...

Music: Open the Door

Travelers with a mission

Music: The Girl of the White Sands

Feeling seasick?

Oh hi, Kortes. I'm okay, the waves are nice and calm. For now, anyway.

The Dusk Sea is unpredictable, so don't get caught daydreaming.

I know.

Kortes!

I don't like having to remind you to treat Shallistera with more respect.

It's okay, Teo. We're pretty far from Lugion Village.

That doesn't matter! As he only daughter of the chief, you're representative of the village. Even though you are comfortable with us, when you speak, you speak for the people of Lugion... Remember that.

I'm just saying it's okay, jeez.

(She has no sense of her position...)

Anyway, our journey is nearly over. We'll finally be able to relax.

Um, not exactly. We've only just begun once we've gotten to Stellard... Let's not get ahead of ourselves.

Yeah I know, but still... Teo, what kind of town is Stellard, anyway?

I've heard it's a bustling city with plenty of commerce, where people her to collect their plentiful water.

So it's a pretty lively city... (I remember my father used to tell me about the lights, and how they looked like shining jewels... I actually get to see them myself... I'm so happy! NO! Don't get too excited. Not yet. Father... Everyone. I'll definitely finish this task for the village...)

Shallie... I know the desert has already claimed the closer village, but Lugion is still safe. We just need to stay focused and find the reason why the water is drying up. Then we can make a plan.

Of course. I'm confident Stellard will have a way to help us. Hey, Kortes, Teo... I'm going to need your support though.

Don't worry, miss, that's the whole reason we're here. My primary function is to support you. There's no need for you to worry about anything.

Alright then, I'm counting on you, Teo.

...Ehh?!

...Teo!?

Music: Alchemist on a Ship

Ooh... Owww...

Dad!! What's wrong?!

It's just my hip...

You ARE getting older... Maybe you should try and be more careful.

I wasn't thinking. If only I could do something about this... Ugh, ow.

(Teo's always been like this... Maybe I can help him...)

Jeez, what happened to being a pillar of support? You're falling apart right here...!

Are you sure you're okay? You should sit down for a minute.

Ugh... This is going to be a pain.

What is?

We're supposed to be landing to restock on supplies soon...

Of course, we wouldn't want to run out.

Won't it be too hard to resupply without Teo's help?

Music: I Don't Get It

Not really, it'll just take a little longer since it's just me.

I could help, too...

It's nice you want to chip in, but I don't know if you're strong enough...

Is that a no?

Shallie, there're plenty of things you help with that only you can do. I got this.

Kortes...

I hope we at least arrive in Stellard before it gets too dark. The sea is dangerous at night. We really shouldn't spend too much time resupplying.

Oh, I know!

What?

I could try making a medical compress with alchemy...

Will that really work?

Let's see, what's first...

Shallie, can I see how you do alchemy? I've always wanted to learn, but I've never really gotten how...

Sure. Can get that book for me?

I can't understand some of this, but I know you need those three ingredients to make the compress, right?

Yes. We have plenty of those ingredients on the ship, but they're really common.

But some of these other notes. Like, what does this "+15" next to the entry mean?

Well, as every alchemist knows, there's four major elements that make up everything in the world: Water, Wind, Fire, and Earth. If I used this compress as an ingredient in another synthesis, it would add a value of 15 to the Wind balance in the new synthesis.

Oh, that makes sense... I guess I can understand the basics, but when it comes to execution...

I havent really studied at all, either. Everything I've done has been done from trial and error.

Once you've added all the ingredients together, you can check what effects the final product will have. I only know a few, since it's in that recipe book, but stronger materials can make incredibly useful items. I haven't had a chance to gather more materials lately, though...

Well, let's see how this turns out. Maybe these ingredients will be enough.

Shallie, do you know why the ingredients can mix together like that?

I'm sure there's a reason, but I've never really understood why. Alchemy sure is incredible...

Trial and error

Lessee, the materials are... And a of this... There! It's done.

Well it looked kind of dangerous at first, but it looks like it worked out alright.

Don't call it "dangerous"!

Huh? You know how it works?

No, but I...

If you don't know how something works, it's dangerous. What if you made a mistake?

Well, I... We should just give this to Teo!

How do you feel, Teo?

Hmm, well... yes, it looks like I'm back to norma-- Oww!!

Don't get up so fast!

Oohh, that hurt...

I was afraid of this... Mm... Looks like it didn't work very well. I'm sorry, Teo...

Don't apologize, Lady Shallistera. I just need to relax a little.

Even so, if this keeps happening, we're going to run into trouble. Maybe a change in ingredients will help?

Y-yeah... Hmm, what else could I use...

We should check around the room.

Okay...!

Shallie, I'll check downstairs. There's a lot of cargo down here, maybe there are some alchemy ingredients down there.

But would you know--? Oh, he's gone. Let's see...

Maybe in here? Yeah, these are some good ingredients!

Shallie, did you find something?

Helpful girl

Wouldn't hurt to try.

Okay, I'll synthesize it again.

Oh, I see... That Taun has some Water elements in it, so adding that to the Water...

We get a better effect!

Just a final stir, and... ...It's done. I hope this goes well...!

...How's that, dad?

Ohh... Oh wow! This is great! The pain is just melting away...

Dad, wait!

Teo, if you get up too fast...!

You don't have to worry... It's like the pain in my hip was just an illusion.

R-really?

I feel much better! And it's all thanks to you, miss.

Well that's a relief!

You're a natural! You really should have more confidence in your alchemic abilities.

Really? I've only learned by watching...

You should do some proper studying. It could prove extremely beneficial to you. A strength.

A strength, huh...

This reminds me, I took a shot at alchemy a while back, but I didn't really get it. This could be a matter of innate talent, like my dad mentioned.

...Natural talent.

Anyway, my hip feels much better now. I think I'm going to take a walk.

You might be feeling better now, but don't push it! You could hurt yourself even worse.

I don't want to hear... Eh?

What's wrong?

It looks like we're nearing the shore.

We're lucky to have found such a nice place to drop anchor.

Really?

Now we can go get supplies.

That's a relief. I was starting to get a little nervous about the food situation...

Well, we should go take a look around outside.

Okay!

If you're going outside, please dress appropriately, miss.

Dress appropriately? But this dress is the symbol of my status as the chieftain's daughter...and I didn't bring any other dresses.

I know that, but... It'd be too late once the accident had occurred, after all.

Well, the monsters around here aren't too strong, but it wouldn't hurt to be a little geared up.

Your personal items are on the table, Shallistera.

Alright... I'll go get them.

Is that how you're going to protect yourself?

I can't use swords or spears like Kortes can...I can only channel my family's magic with relics like this.

Of course, Miss Shallistera. Just be careful, and listen to Kortes.

I know. I'll be careful.

At least we found enough materials to make a Craft. This should be able to take care of weaker monsters. That should do it.

Jeez... I'll go get her, dad, you should still be resting.

I'm counting on you.

Sandy Sea

Music: Sandy Sea -Desert-

Ohh, I'm sorry...

I know I said was a fairly safe place, but you never know what might happen.

I know. By the way...

Hmm?

We're pretty close to Stellard now, aren't we?

Yeah, it shouldn't be too far off. Why do you ask?

Well, isn't Stellard supposed to be the shining oasis in the Dusk Sea? We're so close, but it seems like the desert just keeps going on forever...

Well, it's not like there's a lot of water to go around. Stellard has survived in a fairly remote region, but there's only enough for the people living there. It's still the best chance we have of finding a way to help Lugion, but we shouldn't expect a lot from the surrounding areas. Shallie, we should look around for anything useful for now. Nothing will get done if we just stand around.

Yeah, I guess you're right.

Even if we don't return to this place, we should still survey and gather what we can. Star Fruit can be used for explosive materials, but it's still only a fruit...

Those barrels still have some water in them. It may not be high quality, but we shouldn't waste anything.

Looks like we gathered everything, but... There doesn't seem to be an abundance of materials around here.

No kidding. We found some wood chips, Star Fruit, Water, and some plants, but nothing very useful. We won't be able to resupply anything at this rate.

What should we do?

Let's keep looking for a little while longer... This place is much different from the area around Lugion.

Okay then, we'll look a little longer.

We could also this gathering information about the area around Stellard.

Yeah...

Music: Sand Clouds

Ahhh...! Something's here!

Calm down, Shallie!

You say that, but...!

Stay calm, and stay focused.

But...but...! I've never fought anything before!

It's okay, they're not that strong. Here they come!

An uncertain future

Music: Aquarius

Shallie, we need to combine our attacks to throw the enemy off-balance.

Like that!

But I can't fight that well...

No, but you can help!

Wo--Wow!

Great job! I'll finish this!

Music: Until the Day We Fulfill Our Duty

Heh...piece of cake.

Phew...I'm glad... Hahh... Is it over...? Hahh...

Good work, Shallie.

I...

Who are you?!

A hunter? ...My apologies if we stole your prey.

Don't worry about it.

Wait a minute... You're not Jurie, are you...?

...It's been a long time, Kortes.

Music: Dual Blades and Picture Books

What? Do you know her?

Yeah, it's been ages, though.

Ages, huh. Was there someone in the village?

No, she looked after me when I was living in Stellard.

That's right, you left the village to train a long time ago...

Your little sister is quite the cutie.

Stop that.

So, you are...?

Jurie Crotze. I'm a treasure hunter.

A treasure hunter...

I study old legends and rumors, looking for clues that lead to hidden treasure. I'm gonna strike it rich any day now.

Get rich, huh...

"Strike it rich"? How do you make money now?

Well, I take on random jobs in Stellard, but searching for lost treasures in the Dusk Sea is my real hobby. I only take on the jobs to provide for me and my sister.

I see...but that still sounds dangerous.

Well, it's how I get by. Anyway... Kortes, you haven't introduced me to your little sister.

I'm Shallistera, and we're...

She is the daughter of my clan's chief. A princess, in fact. We're not related.

Oh...

It's nice to meet you!

Same here.

Why are you here, anyway?

We're on our way to Stellard by ship. We were looking for supplies, but we haven't had much luck.

Anything useful is already gone. The expanding Dusk Sea is still swallowing up the land around Stellard, but at the very least it hasn't reached Stellard yet. You might find better materials in other places, but the expansion of the Sea has progressed a lot in this area. Why are you two here?

Oh... We stopped our ship nearby to look for supplies to get to Stellard, but if there's nothing left...

Do you need food and water?

You'd give some to us?

If you take me to Stellard with you.

That's all you want? But food is so valuable...

It's fine.

What, did you get lost or something?

What? No!

...

...Is that a 'yes'?

I'll be fine. I guess you don't want any food or water... See ya.

Wait, don't go! Please! Ugh, Kortes!

What? How can we rely on her if she's like this?

But we can't be picky!

But---

NO! Miss Jurie, come back!

(They get along just like siblings...) So what did you decide?

I'd be okay with you coming with us...

Well, she can be forgetful, but... Yeah, should be fine.

Alrighty then, that settles it... Let's get going.

O-Okay...!

Music: We're Both Shallie

That's...not a bad ship at all. (Much better than mine...)

Don't worry about it.

Please, make yourself at home.

Dad, isn't that enough...?

We need to get the ship moving again, Kortes, come help me with that.

Right. I'll see you later, Shallie.

And I'm not here?

If you don't mind me asking, I'd love to hear about your treasure hunting, and the city!

Interested?

Yes! This is the first time I've left my village... I don't know anything about this area or its customs.

Oh, don't stress out about that kind of thing. Really.

Are you sure...? What about things like clothes? I'm not very stylish...

Is that what you think? I like your style, honestly.

Really?

Yes. But I hadn't heard about your journey. Why did you come here?

Well...

Do you know about Lugion Village?

Kortes may have mentioned it before when he came to Stellard, but I can't say I know anything about it.

Oh... Anyway, that's where me, Kortes, and Teo come from. The Dusk Sea is expanding faster and faster, and it's coming close to Lugion. Unlike Stellard, we don't have enough water for everyone, and most of our water sources have dried up. As the daughter of the chief, I was asked to come, and Teo decided to come with me to assure my safety. Kortes followed Teo, too, and because he knew about Stellard.

I see... And what do you want to learn in Stellard?

Well, how to stop the expansion of the Dusk Sea, or if they don't know, how to protect our water sources. ...And that's why we've come here on the ship. We thought we could find a way to save the village in Stellard!

Music: Let's Calmly Talk!

I see.

Stellard is an oasis, right? I'm sure it's beyond beautiful...

An oasis, huh...

It's my responsibility, after all...!

(That attitude won't be enough, I know that) ...

The ambitious girl

Couldn't eat another bite!

That's not what the food left on your plate says. You're going to get hungry again before lunch.

I said I was full! If anything, you're the one who isn't eating enough, mom.

Well, I'm on a diet.

I'm sure you don't need to diet at your age.

I'm not giving you up quite yet, Shallie. So, are you going to go visit Raoul again today?

Yep, I'm sure the Cooperative Union will have some work.

Don't just settle for "some work". You should find something bigger.

Sure, if it were only that easy. The world isn't just gonna hand me what I want.

My daughter will be just fine. You've got a ton of personality!

I know I know, you say all the time.

Good luck!

Music: Blue Sky and Broom Daughter

Raoul just gives me random chores... I want to do a big job and earn a ton of money for once! I've got a good feeling about today, so maybe it'll really happen... I know life isn't that easy... But maybe... Just maybe... Some good will happen today!!

City of Abundant Water

Another great day! Yeah! Let's do this!

The low cieling

Music: Song of the Sand Sea Hunters

Is there anything that can be done?

Well--

Good morning!

Oh, hello, Shallie.

...

(Who's that with the boss?) Umm, I hope I'm not interrupting anything...

No, it's fine.

But there's someone here...

He's an official from Central sent here to check out some nearby ruins. Try to be nice, eh?

From Central?! Really?

I'm Solle Grumman.

Ummm, I'm Shallote Elminus. (Investigating ruins? That means there could be amazing treasure there!) Ah, I'm actually an alchemist, so if you need anything, just let me know!

I see. Well, thank you.

(He doesn't seem interested at all... Maybe alchemists aren't as rare back in Central. But mom was right... I still need to make an appeal!) Um... Umm...

I'm gonna ask you to do the usual work today, Shallie, can you do that for me?

Really? You just want me to pick up more trash...? Isn't there anything else?

Like what?

Isn't there a more involved job I can do? Like helping an official or something?

In that case, I guess I can't count on you to do the job. I'll give the work and money to someone else.

Oh! Well, you know, that doesn't mean I won't do it! Haha, you're such a tease...

What is with her...? Where were we...? Oh right, the issues with the water purifying equipment.

That would be the best place to start. We'll need to have a thorough investigation.

An investigation...?

I shouldn't have to tell you Central is very interested in what's happening around Stellard. Furthermore...

The little genius

Is something wrong, Shal?

Miruca!

Music: Forearm Ball

You look worried...

Not particularly... What about you? You don't come around here that often.

I'm taking a mental health day from work.

Whoa, is that gonna be okay? You're always so busy!

I get bored with the same request over and over. Today, tomorrow, yesterday... Every day, the same. Imbuing is so boring... I'm fed up with mind-numbing work.

"Mind-numbing"?! The kind of work you do is so amazing, and no matter how many times I see you, I still can't figure it out.

It's not as amazing as it looks. It's very scientific. Once you get trained to do it, it becomes much less exciting to see.

*sigh* You know, you're actually pretty lucky. Running the atelier isn't enough to get by... Which is why I'm out here doing odd jobs like this one.

Imbuing is still a new thing around here. I'm sure they'll get over it sooner or later. And that's when traditional alchemists like you will step in again. You should stop taking odd jobs and practice alchemy instead. It would help to have a customer base...

Unlike yourself, I don't have the luxury to get by like that at the moment.

Shal... I don't want to make you feel bad, but sometimes I don't think before I speak to people...

I'm sorry! Ugh, don't give me that look... It's super awesome you got to study in Central. We should plan something amazing to do one of these days! How does that sound?

Sure... Do you have any ideas?

Do you still have that weapon of yours?

Um, yes...

Then we should go outside town together! I want to go on a big adventure and make some money! We can talk about it later. Alrighty, back to work! See you!

Shal, I know you always do your best, no matter what... I just wish I could help...

(Wait a minute, maybe I can use some of this stuff...) Omigosh! Is that an ore pumpkin?! Oh, nope, just a bit of scrap metal... The junk around here isn't that bad at all! Okay, time to get to work picking it all up!

Phew, is that everything? Time to go back and report to Raoul at the Union.

-ut will we really need alchemists?

I'm sure of it. At my last posting, we had two highly-skilled alchemists that completely turned around the development of the small town they were in. Do you know the name Colseit?

Some travelers have come here from Colseit, yeah.

It was alchemy that put it on the map. I think that--

*slam*

Wonderful...

I'm finished, Raoul!

Good job, Shallie. Here's your compensation.

Whoa, it's even less than I thought...

Is that a complaint?

Not exactly... But don't you think the work I did was worth more than this?

If you want a better paycheck, you have to do better work.

I'm not sure there's much skill to trash collecting...

No way, there's plenty of ways to improve efficiency for tasks, even cleaning. You start small, but you can work your way up.

I know. I'm aiming to do something amazing in my future, and get super famous!

Really. So you have a plan?

Well, I... No. Not yet. But don't come crying to me for favors when I've struck it rich!

What a free spirit she is...

That 'free spirit' is just about her only redeeming quality.

Hmmm....

What is it?

Nothing at all.

We should get back to work. So. How about you tell me exactly what's causing problems here.

Music: Creaking

Alright...

Unending dream

... (I thought I heard Raoul talking about something... He'd prolly tell me I wouldn't understand. Though I guess I should've expected, being a beginner alchemist living in the poor part of town... Mom... Miruca.. I don't see anything in my future... Do I even have one?)

What a cheapskate! No class at all. He wouldn't hesitate to use any way possible to save a buck! ...Hahh...

Welcome home, Shallie! Wow, you look exhausted from all that work.

Hi mom. Gosh, I'm starving!

Don't forget to wash your hands.

Mom, seriously, you don't need to treat me like a little kid anymore.

Yes, well, you'll always be my little girl.

Quit it!

Alright, alright. I'll get you something to eat. You can lie down for a bit.

Okaaaay.

That song is beyond lame... (Though I like to make my own songs, too...)

Music: Orgel of Youth

"Something amazing", eh? I ended up telling both Raoul AND Miruca that one. (Because of Miruca's experience at Central, she knows a lot about the latest Imbuing techniques. All I have is my self-taught alchemy and personal motivation... What can I do to help myself?

Ugh, what a drag. (I don't care what I end up doing as long as it isn't just trash duty. I want to travel and see the world! I want to do something in my own style that gets me recognized... Mom would be so proud!) What could I do that would make me stand out in a crowd...?

...Shallie, I'll always be proud of you...

Yeah, that little icon just indicates which protagonist you've chosen. Only your chosen character will have that icon, the other Shallie just has a generic text box.

Music: We'll Continue

Fateful encounters

You're not finished yet?

I'm sorry, I've always been a slow eater.

Well yeah, especially if all you're eating is meat.

Hey, what's wrong with liking meat?!

Nothing. I like meat, too.

Jurie!

Make sure you're finished eating by the time we get to Stellard.

We're finally reaching Stellard.

Yep. Just don't forget that the real work starts when we reach Stellard. Don't forget why we've come this far. It might be a long time before we can go back to Lugion.

I know that, but Jurie said she'll introduce us to someone who can help us when we get there. That means we'll be okay, right?

Shallie. Stellard is a lot different from Lugion. You have to be aware of the people around you, not everyone is nice. Don't ever let your guard down.

You worry too much. Do you really think I'm that helpless?

We've got a situation!

What's going on, dad?

It's a Sand Dragon!

Sand... What??

A Sand Dragon, the largest dragons that inhabit the sea.

After we've come so far! Why now?

No time to talk, we have to get away from this!

Whoa! Full speed ahead!

Is that...Stellard? But, at this speed...

Kortes! We're going too fast, we need to reduce speed!

Dammit! The controls aren't working!

What?!

Shallie, get down!

Ah!

Prepare for impact! Hang on to something!

I...Is everyone okay?

I think so...

I'm alright.

So, what should we do now?

We should probably head to the Cooperative Union building and explain this to Raoul, the man in charge of the Union. I'll have to go along to make sure he believes you.

(Oh no...)

We should hurry before the crowd gathers.

Miss, I'll stay behind and try to keep everyone calm. I'll also see if anything happened to the ship that needs repairs.

Thanks Teo. Okay, let's go.

All washed up

Whose ship is this? Is this an attack against Stellard?! Where is the owner of this ship?! I demand you show yourself, NOW! You're a disturber of the peace...!

(Whoa, Perriend is maaaad...) That's not that surprising considering they crashed in here at top speed...

Sorry, but, who're you?

The name's Gerard Perriend. I run the Corporation in this city... How do you not know that?

And I'm his secretary, Linca. Are you the owner of this ship?

No. The owner has gone to report this incident to the person responsible in town...

What do you mean, "the person responsible"?! Then why didn't they come to me?!

(That sure would make him mad. The old man sure has some guts. Maybe he's not from around here? His clothes don't look familiar... But why would the people on the ship know where to go to report this? If they didn't see Perriend, that means... They went to see Raoul?) Oh right! I need to go see Raoul, too!

A dream deferred

It was an accident. It can't be helped.

We must deal with this quickly. The harbor is in utter chaos!

Sorry about the trouble.

You'll have to write a report to submit to Central afterwards, I'm afraid. I'll have talks with Central about materials for the harbor... Though I don't have much hope for that.

Thanks. Sorry about this.

So, um, the reason we came to Stellard is...

Could you tell me later, maybe?

Huh? But...

He means we don't have time to deal with your problems right now. There are a lot of important things that need attention, including the harbor repairs.

But we're...!

Shallie, stop. Save it for later.

You guys...

It would help if you did.

Alright then.

What about her?

Oh, nothing. We should go check out the harbor and help the injured right away!

What to do

(Hahh... They didn't even listen...)

Shallie, I know how you feel, but you have to understand their position, too.

I...I know, but they still should have listened.

While we don't have a lot of time, there's no need to--

I can't believe this happens and they don't explain anything to the Corporation... What is the Union doing?!

Raoul is checking out the damage to the harbor with the official from Central. They're also going to ask the owner of the Sand Ship some questions.

Investigating the harbor isn't going to fix it. What's the point?

We need to assess the damage and get an idea what supplies we need to request from Central.

Central won't do anything for us! As usual! They just don't get it. Like I said, they just... Act like children!

You're spitting again.

Ah, sorry.

I'd hope not! And why do I have to go to the Union, of all places?

Ah, your hair...

Oh, right...

That old guy sure made a racket.

The woman accompanying him was very pretty though.

You think so?

Yeah, she seemed like a socialite from the city. Jurie's pretty as well, but...

All I saw was the old man. I totally missed the woman...

Well we was pretty hard to ignore. He seemed pretty pissed.

No sense in dwelling about it.

Yeah but... ("Sand Ship"... Did they OUR ship...?)

Kortes, you really should pay more attention to your surroundings. I can't believe Shallie has better sense than you do.

What's with that? Now just--

Ugh, anyway. What about that man, Jurie?

He's...well, you'll probably be meeting him soon. Just be careful around him, he has a really short temper.

(Everyone from the city is...)

Anyway, what are you two going to do now? There's definitely no use in talking to him when he gets in these moods.

Well, it wouldn't hurt to check on the ship. The crowd should have disappeared by now at least.

There's nothing really I can do to help you with that, so would you mind if I went back to the Union to try and calm things down?

That would be a great help!

Alright, see you later. Let's go Shallie.

One big chance

Single file, please...

(Wow, there could easily be nothing here for me today.)

No pushing!

Hey, listen up! You, over there! Yeah, you guys, you're blocking the path! And you...

Raoul!

Oh, Shallie! You got here just in time!

Huh? In time for what?

As you can see, it's a bit of a mess here today... I really could use the help!

Huh? But yesterday you said that--

I know, I know, but that was before the ship crashed into the harbor. I'm really short-handed today in dealing with this crowd.

I suppose it IS pretty crowded.

Yes it is. So what do you say? Can I count on you?

Of course I'll help! (Is it truly time to show my skills? Someone actually believes in me?!) What do you need me to do??

I need you to run the survey outside, I can't do it today.

Got it! I'll do a great job!

Alright, time for my first adventure!

Music: Sandy Sea -Shallote-

The long road forward

Welcome back. How did it go?

Not well. How's the ship?

Doing surprisingly well. Another ship docked in the harbor absorbed most of the impact.

Is the other ship alright?

Unfortunately not...

Oh no!

On the bright side, thanks to that, the town didn't suffer as much damage. How long will repairs for the ship take?

I'm double-checking the integrity of the individual parts, but the repairs shouldn't take long at all.

Oh good!

So what happened in Stellard?

Um...

OH! I had no idea, I'm so sorry, miss! Please, feel free to get some rest.

I'm sorry. And thank you.

I feel like I'm only just causing trouble for everyone. I'm a failure at representing the clan. (Their attitudes today made them seem super hard to talk to... I'll need to work hard. I can't get discouraged yet! With every passing moment the water in the village is disappearing. Just wait a little longer father! Everyone!)

Great expectations

Alright, time to get to work! If Raoul is happy with my work, maybe I'll get a bigger job next time...! Hehehe! Hey now, not the time for that!

Music: Seeing Off the Daytime Calm

What's first...? Oh yeah! Gathering materials!

Ugh! Too many sheep!

Hm, the ingredients around here aren't very high quality, but survey complete! Let's head back now.

Rescue from the sky

Eeeeeek!! Wait! Stop! I'm not a threat! Can't we just talk this out?!

What are you doing?

T-the sheep...! The sheep!

They're just sheep... Eh, whatever...

Huh?

Pay attention, and act quickly! Here we go!

Hold on, 'cause I won't catch you if you fall!

Okay...! (Wow, this is incredible! I'm flying through the air! Is this person some sort of insane alchemist?) Woahhhhhh!

Hey, don't grab me like that! It tickles!

I can't help it!

Ahh! Don't pull on my clothes!

I told you I can't help it!!

Argh!! Just let me go, then!

No way! Are you crazy?! I'll fall!

I don't care! Just hang down from the broom or something!

What?!

We'll be in town soon! Just hang on and--ah!!

Ahhhh!!

Shallie, are you awake?

Kortes...? Yes, I'm awake.

Jurie came by a little while ago. She said it would be a good idea to stop by the Union and explain our situation. Apparently the panic over our ship crashing into the harbor has calmed down a little.

Oh, that's great! Then...

Don't get ahead of yourself. We don't know if they'll even agree to help.

I know, but... We have to do everything we can!

Mutual benefit

Yes. And since Stellard has plenty of water, we thought we might find a way to save our village here.

I understand. Unfortunately, this is not the place that can help you.

What?

It's true, many people have come here from dried up areas, making it a bit of an oasis sanctuary...for now.

Then...?

..."For now" being the point.

What do you mean?

...The water here is starting to dry up as well. We're trying to fix it before it's an issue, but it's not going well. We have our own problems here. I don't think you'll find much help.

No way...!

I know the problem your village is facing is a big deal... But I'm responsible for this town. I need to help it first. I'm sorry.

What will I tell everyone...?

I wouldn't expect people to up and help you just because you asked. You're lucky if they even listen.

I understand the situation here and and why you won't help, but you don't have to be rude about it.

Well, I have a proposition for you. Would you be willing to work for the city?

Huh?

If you lend your strength to the city, it will lend its strength to you.

Really?

The Union is about reciprocal aid. It's like a contract... They won't fail to hold up their end of the deal.

Yeah, right... No one follows through with their promises around here.

If that's what you want to believe, I believe our conversation ends here. However, it's not going to get your any closer to saving your village, correct?

Ergh... What if we're wasting our time? Can you guarantee we're not doing that?

Well, I--

I'll do it! I'll do anything for the village... Please...

Shallie!?

Then we have a deal. Raoul, do you agree?

Yes. Welcome to Stellard, Shallie...

Before we start working for Stellard, I'd like to know more about how this town is managed.

Most of the commerce and governing in Stellard are run by the "Cooperative Union" and the "Corporation". The "Corporation" controls the water source here, essentially making them the government. Meanwhile...

The "Cooperative Union" is more autonomous.

An autonomous organization? As in, you're not officially recognized? That's pretty sketchy.

This town isn't just populated with the wealthy, there are just as many lower class, and instigators, for that matter. We're rule makers and problem solvers, aiming to make this town a better place for everyone.

Making the town a better place to live...

Also, Central is currently cooperating with the Union, which is why I've been dispatched here.

Why would Central side with the unofficial group instead of the Corporation?

The Corporation is worried about Central's influence. They think they'll lose power if Central moves in.

That's quite the misunderstanding at the moment. Officials such as myself don't have much real power. Besides, we've got a much more important task to do.

What is it?

Investigating and researching ancient relics from around the world... And, the Dusk.

Dusk?

He's saying that your village isn't the only place having problems. The Dusk is threatening to consume the entire world. Your village and Stellard are no exceptions.

Stellard is an intriguing area, which is why I'm investigating both the cause and solution to the Dusk here. That's the real reason I'm here.

I'll do anything to protect Stellard... I'll work with anyone to ensure that. Thus the partnership with Central.

If only it were that easy. The issue is that the environmental toll the Dusk has taken is different in each area, and the influence of the Dusk exists in different ways. It's hard to find a single cause when the Dusk seems to be affecting the environment around the world. But, that is why surveys are such important information. In fact, I'd love your cooperation with the environmental survey we'll be conducting soon.

I have faith in you. You've got your own crisis back home to keep the fire lit under you!

Is it normal for the Union to take advantage of other people's weaknesses like this?

We've all got weaknesses. Let me remind you, this is for mutual benefit. If your work is satisfactory, this town will do everything in its power to help your village.

And don't you forget it.

Raoul is a man of his word. I assure you we won't forget about our end of the deal.

...

The survey itself may be simple, but traveling to distant lands is difficult.

Which is why we've found someone to help you out... Come on in.

Hey, I'm here to help.

Jurie?!

Out of everyone...

We'll have fun.

I'd like you to start the survey of the Stellard area here - in the eastern edge of the Fertile Sea. It should be a simple task, especially with Jurie assisting you. Remember to complete the report and submit it to me when you're finished.

Come on Shallie. Let's go.

Huh...? Oh, yes!

Jurie, welcome...! Again...

Thanks...

So, uh...why did you decide to come with us?

This is another one of those "mutual benefits" deals.

Sounds like you're up to something to me.

Sometimes you have to take a leap of faith, Kortes.

Ugh... Please tell me you haven't let your skills fade...?

Hey, I'M the one who taught YOU how to sail!

You DID? Then it's thanks to you we arrived at Stellard safely, Jurie.

Though she hit some trouble getting back herself...

Hey, I didn't have any issues!

She's not coming.

Oh right, I forgot she was studying in Central.

Actually, she's back in town now.

Then why...? ...

Maybe we shouldn't ask, but... Miruca? Who's that?

She's my little sister.

Your little sister, huh? Then she must be super cute...

No, she's super EXTRA cute.

...Wha?

We're headed to a place called the "Fertile Sea". Shallie, get your things together.

Oh, right.

Music: Sandy Sea -Shallistera-

I'm not that experienced in surveying, so I'll just help you two deal with any monsters we encounter.

What? I thought you worked for the Union.

Yeah, but there's a variety of jobs the Union deals with. I'm much better with monster exterminating requests. Shallie there seems like a natural in handling surveying requests.

Shelbani Wheat, Water...ugh, the quality isn't very good, Anti-Bug Grass, Phlogiston, Red Clay, and Dusk Sea Sand... That should be all the materials. Now, what about the monsters...?

We should keep up with her better from now on.

Music: Stella -Part 1

Wow... Jurie, you're amazing!

At least I'm working with one smart person.

Let's just take care of the other monsters around here to complete the survey.

Possiblities

Yep.

It's amazing...

What is?

The world is a pretty big place. There're a lot of mysteries out there.

Yeah...

You okay, Shallie?

She'll get used to it. I was the same way in the beginning, too.

Really?

Your alchemy is like that.

What does a survey have to do with alchemy?

Alchemy has the power to create things beyond imagination. One day you'll realize that power... But know that it might also frighten you. I don't have any talent when it comes to alchemy, I started to feel that way after watching my little sister.

The power to create something beyond anyone's imagination...

Jurie...

We should get back, Solle is probably waiting for us.

The power of alchemy...

Is this materials survey actually taking a day, since we're not on a timeclock?

Measuring how long something is in this game is really hard without a time reference (not that the other games particularly made sense time-wise), but for the update itself I'm going to say it took place over a few hours and when Stera and Lotte get home, they called it a day.

Part III: The Dangerous Side of the Lush Archipelago

The report is complete, but I don't know if Solle will be with it. We'll just have to submit it and see.

Mr. Solle, here's my report on the Fertile Sea.

That quickly? Let me take a close look...

The little master

Music: Baby Bird -Part 3-

Ugh, my clothes are all stretched out!

Oooh, thank you so much! You saved me!

Ahah, ah. Don't worry about it. I was just passing by...

That was totally amazing! I've never seen a flying broom!

That's nothing, really.

So cool! What're the techniques you use to fly like that?

Uhh...

Master! Please, make me your apprentice!

Huh? ...Apprentice!?

I'm kind of an alchemist, but my skill is pretty low... I'm trying to get better!

As a magician, I can't really do anything for you...

Are you saying I have no talent with alchemy...?

What? No! That's not what I'm trying to say...

Then please, master! I'll do anything!

Master...

You're the only person I can count on...!

The only person... Hehehe... Hehe... This is just like back then... But I'm not really sure if...

...Is that a no?

Really!? Awesome! Finally, my time to shine!

Let me show you some real magic. Hehe.

I'm Wilbell. I wander the land searching for great power.

Wander the land? Wow... That sounds so cool...

What about you?

I'm Shallote Elminus! I'm a beginner alchemist here in town.

...Shallote, huh.

You can call me Shallie!

Ok Shallie, I've got some errands to run, so I'll see you again some other time.

What? No training or anything?

You won't retain anything if you start training while you're so amped up. Calm down a little...

Okay...! Sorry! See you soon, Master Wilbell!

Yeah, see ya later...!

(Hm, she's just like her. I wonder what she's doing now...?)

Phew...that was scary! Time to put everything back into the Container and get something to eat!

A natural adventurer

Um...

Thank you. Your report is indeed interesting. ...A much better report than I was expecting, actually. I didn't expect this much out of you.

Uh, thank you...?

Not bad, Shallie. It's not often for a guy like Solle to compliment someone.

Uh huh, sure... You're just saying that so we'll work harder, aren't you?

Don't be so suspicious. You really did do a good job. I'd love to work with you more in the future...

...Really?

Shallistera and Kortes, is it? You both seem to have some skill in this kind of work.

Skill, huh... That means we'll be paid, right?

Of course. The investigation will go much smoother with you helping. The Union appreciates your continued support.

Of course.

Central will also conduct its own detailed investigation. A capable agent will be sent to lend you their support.

A capable agent?

Oh... I see... Thank you. (Hmm, the way he said that sounded off...)

Oh, before you go, one more thing. Come in, everyone.

I'm really looking forward to working with everyone.

Give shiny. After finished.

We work.

Awww, they're so cute!

In the future, please give me a detailed list of all the search equipment you take outside of town. As long as you do so, I can have the homunculi here replace anything we use.

Anything?!

That's correct. The homunculi are incredible workers, and there's that can be made with alchemy that the homunculi cannot reproduce. Isn't that correct?

Yes. We work. Hard.

Can do anything.

Incredible!

We don't have any more work today. Please get some rest and we should have more work tomorrow.

Of course! Thank you very much!

The reliable girl

Oh, Shallie. Excellent job, you really saved me there.

It was easy!

Really? That's good news at least. You can go home for today.

Uuhmm, there was something I wanted to ask, chief...

...Huh? Chief?

Please, give me more work to do! I want to try everything!

You can't just come out and say it like that... I don't really have anything for you to do...

This might be the perfect chance...

For what?

If we're going to require more surveys, it would help to have more personnel. I didn't see any issues with her work today... Shallie, was it?

Yes!

Maybe we can start by giving her some easier jobs.

That sounds fantastic!

Are you serious?

Do you even have to ask?

Well, it is YOU we're talking about.

I don't know... What are your thoughts, Solle?

We can't really keep talking with her around... Just agree so she'll go home, okay?

Oh... I get it.

You're just trying to get rid of me?!

Well if Solle says it's a good idea, I suppose I should try to find you more work.

Really?! Ohmigosh! Thank you so much, Raoul! And uh...Solle!

Don't worry about it. Though you should be prepared for your work to e strictly assessed.

Come find me when you want work. I'll find something for you.

Okay!

Make sure your reports are more detailed in the future, though.

Oh no, was here something wrong with my report?

Not exactly wrong, but if you want better pay for these kinds of jobs, it would help to gather additional information.

Not to mention, you can find more rare materials to help with your alchemy. It's beneficial for both of us.

Oh, I see... Gotcha!

Also, I've brought some more homunculi to help with my work here. They'll be able to make any items for your work outside town. As long as you submit a detailed investigation report before you leave town, I can have them supply you with any items you use a lot outside of town.

That sounds great! Thanks Solle!

Crossing paths

Solle's hard to talk to, he's actually a super nice guy. (I should tell mom!)

Well at least he appreciates our work... Let's just keep this up, Shallie.

Yeah, you're right...

(Did... Someone just say my name?)

Shallie!

Miruca! (Who was that I saw just now? Wait a minute... Weren't the people who were just here wearing similar clothes to that old guy on the ship...?)

That was weird, I thought I heard someone calling my name...

It's probably just your imagination.

(...Was that girl's name Shallie, too? She looked like a local... So full of energy!)

Well, anyway, we should get back to the ship. We need to talk to Teo about what we do next.

Right.

A big step forward

Nothing. I just thought I'd visit.

Oh, hmm... That's weird, you never stop by for no reason...

Are you telling me I need a reason to come by your house?

Uh, no! That's not what I meant, but you're welcome to come today! I have news.

News?

Ah, Shallie, welcome home.

Miruca is here to visit, too.

Hello, Miruca! It's been a while.

Hello. So, what was this "news"?

News...?

You're getting to the business already? Seriously?!

Quit stalling and say it already!

You want to know that badly? Well, hmm, what should I do...

...I'm leaving.

W-Wait a second! I'll say it, I'll say it, sheesh. Aheh... Well...

Well, a lot of things happened today, but I finally got some real work! Raoul asked me to perform a survey outside in the Lush Valley, so I went and did it! I actually met an amazing alchemist, too!

An amazing alchemist...?

Yeah! Her broom flew and everything, and she flew me back to Stellard! And when we got back to Stellard, I asked her to be my master, and she said yes! Now I can learn great new recipes and make more incredible things.

Shal, I'm not sure that was alchemy...

Anyway! Raoul said that in the future, I'll start getting better jobs and making a lot of money!

That's great, Shallie! Now you can work hard to become Raoul's second in command!

Haha... Ah, I don't think that's going to happen...

It's okay, you can work 24 hours a day! You'll be up there before you know it!

You think so?

Uh, no. She'd die at that rate.

But I am really happy about getting more work.

It's because of all the effort you've been putting in this whole time.

That's great, Shal. Also. If you're ever having trouble with work, let me know.

Is that really okay?

Yep, I'm sure you'll need help if you start getting more work.

Thank you, Miruca.

Also... I'm curious about this "master".

Oh, that's... Nothing you need to worry about.

I can be concerned if I want, it doesn't have anything to do with you.

Huh??

Haha, Miruca, you're always so blunt.

...Anyway, let me know when you're going out of town. See you.

What? You're leaving already?

Yes. Good-bye.

Why did she even come here?

Hehe, Miruca's a good friend.

Huh?

Shallote.

Yeah?

Mom?

I want you to find what you really want to do with your life...

Okay...!

Music: Listen Here!

Music: Humming in the Atelier

Shallote, why don't you get some sleep? It sounds like you've had a long day...

Not yet! I have to tell my master about this! I'll be back!

Moving forward

Oh, welcome back!

Sorry about asking you to look after the ship.

No need to worry. By the way, how did the negotiations go today?

Well, it seems we'll be here for a while at least. The city is run by two groups: the Cooperative Union, and the Corporation. The man we spoke to at the Union said that he would be able to help us with the water problem in Lugion if we helped them with the water issues in Stellard.

It's possible that the issues in Stellard are connected with the water problem in Lugion. So that's why we're thinking of staying and helping with the investigations for a bit.

Is that so... Well, you have managed to get some results. That's great!

I'm sorry that we're helping another town when our own is in danger...

In order to cooperate, you must first earn trust, miss. If you show them sympathy and support, they will repay the favor.

You're right...

We're still going to need to get stronger if we want to keep this up. If we don't, we'll eventually run into trouble in more distant areas. I really should be training more...

Yeah, I should be studying alchemy more, too... So I can help everyone.

Are there really that many places to investigate around here?

I'm pretty sure Raoul and Jurie are familiar with that area. We should ask them.

I can train myself in alchemy and fighting as we investigate, in order to help the people in town! It might be a while before we can help the village, but we can only do this one step at a time.

We'll be helping, too, miss, so you shouldn't worry about a thing.

Just do whatever you can, Shallie.

Okay... Thank you. Both of you.

We should accept more requests from the Union to get started.

Burning spirit

Hey Shallie, what's up?

I have something to tell you... The official from Central says he has some work for me...!

Official? Oh, you mean Solle.

You know him? As I'd from my master!

Uh, kinda... Anyway, why are you telling me about this?

Until now, I just kind of went through life without a goal or purpose... But I wanted to start thinking about that kind of thing, so that's why I wanted to talk to you.

Oh, I see... It is good to have a goal, that's true...

Do YOU have any goals, Master Wilbell?

...

...What?

As I'd expect! You've become a master, but you still strive for improvement... That's amazing!

What?! You know, I only became your "Master" because you were literally begging me for it...

Well, I... First I want to make some actual money... That way my mom can actually relax...

It's good to care for your aging parents, but do you really have the skills to command that much money?

That's why I became your apprentice, so I can learn more alchemy!

Oh, that's right... Heh... Just do your best and try not to overthink it! Try making a lot of different things. That's how you'll eventually get better at alchemy.

Eventually... Really?

Don't worry, I'll help you however I can!

Hehee, I knew I could count on you. But...

What?

(Does she really know how to do alchemy? She talks like she does, but...) Oh uh, nothing. It's nothing. (What do I want to do after making so much money...?) Oh, don't worry about it! Anyway, can we go out of town now?!

Um, no. I just arrived in this town, so I have some things I need to take care of. Don't worry! I can help you with your adventures soon.

Yes! Thank you master! I should get to work!

Merchant far from home

(Was there a shop here before?)

Oh, miss! Miss! You must know what you like if you're checking out my shop.

Not... Particularly...

Come now, just take a look!

I uh... Ahh!!

You're asking how I'm doing? Why, thank you!

Wha--! But I never...

Never mind! Listen to my story of why I became a merchant! I've come a long way from home as a travelling merchant so I can support my brothers and sisters...

Oh dear... I'm sorry!

Don't worry! I'm glad you took the time to stop by and check out my shop!

(She seems like she works really hard...) Oh, and uh, I'm an alchemist, so if you ever have anything that is useful in alchemy...

Ohh! An alchemist, you say? Well no wonder you're so gorgeous! My shop is known for carrying only the best, rarest items.

Come, come! Check out my items!

Uh...maybe later! I've got a lot to do!

Hey Shallie. Here are the job postings for today.

Hm, all of these items and monsters can be found in the Fertile Sea. I'm sure can do a lot. Oh, it looks like we already have a few Phlogiston for the delivery.

Great! Well, you can turn that in right now if you want.

Sure! Let's see, we need to go outside for...

These three jobs! Alright, I'll see you later.

Sure. Do your best out there.

It's nice to know things have calmed down, but... Can we really earn the trust of the people here?

As long as you keep trying, I know you can.

Alright, let's get to work.

What kind of creature was this?!

I have no idea, but it might even be a dragon's bones. Dragons are much rarer today, but you'll still find a few of them. A dragon as big as this, though...

Ugh, I don't want to think about it. Anyway, when we finish here we should probably head back and report the completed jobs. Plus, we need more supplies for future investigations.

The water quality isn't good...do you think we could take some water from the town fountain?

It should be okay with Raoul, as long as we don't take a lot. Do you know where Stellard plaza is?

Um, no, I don't think so.

Okay, I'll show you the way.

The fountain is just ahead.

Wow...it's beautiful.

This is why everyone is working hard for Stellard. To protect this water and this city.

And me and Kortes need to work hard to bring this to Lugion.

Well, I'm also here to protect Shallie, but you're right. This might be our last chance to save Lugion.

Well, that should be enough for now. I need to get started on my alchemy for the day.

I have some...things to take care of, too. See you two later.

Things? Ah, whatever. Let's head back.

So this is what dad was talking about with learning more complex alchemy... I need to keep improving my skills to get better effects, too. Well, all I can is keep learning.

Music: Explanation!

Hm... Maybe I can find some alchemy books in town. I still don't know to make better items. Maybe that girl has some?

Shal, are you sure you want to come this far out?

Are you kidding?! This is still so close to Stellard! We need to gather ingredients and fight monsters, too!

I guess, but still, don't push yourself.

Don't worry!

Music: Sweep! -1-

Miruca, what's that weapon of yours called?

I call it a pilebunker. It's based on a design I worked on in Central. It fires nails out extremely quickly, I can also increase the output all at once to attack at close range, too.

Wow... That's amazing! How do you---

Ahhh! Miruca!

Don't worry about me. Just focus on the enemy.

I had no idea the valley was so big... And what are those bones?

Maybe a Sand Dragon? I have no idea.

Let's just hurry up here... They kind of give me the creeps.

It looks like someone has been through here recently.

Yeah, there's not many materials. Let's split up and find what we can.

Wow, great job!

At least I can be of help to you on your adventures.

Oh, she has three books for sale. Can I have Cooking for Beginners?

Of course! Excellent choice! I also have Craftswork for Beginnners, too! Only 80 Cole!

Only 80...? Okay, I'll take it!

Shallie, I accepted some jobs for materials in a forest south of here. You interested in going along with me?

Sure! Let me just get Kortes!

Music: Sandy Sea -Vegetation-

Wolves... I guess they can't all be exciting.

Wow, not bad Shallie.

That was easier than I thought it would be...

I...think we should avoid that monster, though. We've completed all of our work here, anyway.

Agreed...

Shallie? Why are you staring at your arm? Do you feel bigger or something?

Not even close!! I just... Thought my muscles felt stronger... People made fun of me for being small and weak... But I can change too!

Hmm... They when don't you show me how strong you are? Go ahead, try and knock me down. You better get ready, because I'll try to knock you down, too.

Knock you down? But I--

Here I come! Ya!

What?! Ouch...!

Sorry, sorry. But you still have a long way to go. If you get too strong, you won't need me anymore... I think it's just right that you're a bit weak. Sorry, but I have to help dad out with the engine. I'll see you later.

A bit weak...? Hahh... I need to work harder. Hm...I should focus on alchemy for now.

Music: Memorize!

An item for synthesis, and...

And a salve for adventures in the future...

Cleaning up the trash, cleaning up the trash, I can do it in a flash. Hm hm hm. Well, at least I can focus on some alchemy after I finish up this job.

Part IV: The Vanished Side of the Past World

Back and forth

Hey, Shallie. Thanks for coming.

How's the own?

Not well. Though it has nothing to do with you crashing your ship into the harbor.

Don't worry about it. It's time for the Union to show its true strength.

We're so sorry...

I don't mean to sound rude, but... Can I ask you to repair our ship, too?

That would be impossible at this time.

Oh... I see...

Simply put, the resources required to repair your ship are not in the Union's budget. We have no room to accomodate your request, but let me think... Have you tried the Perriend Corporation yet? They go by the "Corporation" for short.

The Perriend Corporation?

Like I mentioned before, they have quite the influence in the city. It may be hard to win their trust, but it wouldn't hurt to introduce yourselves.

There's no need to send him over there...

Our goal is to solve problems in this city, and their goal is to solve problems in their village. It doesn't matter if they work with the Union or Corporation as long as the situation is resolved.

Solle...

Wow, you're such a softie.

Either way, if you end up making a connection with Gerard Perriend, you'll have a much easier time here.

Will the people be more accepting of us?

I guess you could put it that way...

I understand. We'll try going to the Corporation now!

Good luck.

...Thank you, Solle.

Just doing my job.

Do you really expect them to get Perriend's support?

No. Not right away, at least. He's easier to get along with than he first seems, but he's still very protective of the Corporation's influence over Stellard. He won't be easy to persuade into anything that he doesn't think will make him a profit, or benefit Stellard. Them crashing their ship into the city is not going to help them, either.

Still, it could be that Shallie and her friends could end up being a bridge between the Union and Corporation.

If only we had the time to worry about things like that. Do you have the budget numbers for the harbor repair?

Right here.

Let's see...

Butting heads

Are you sure this is the way?

When we went to the fountain, I saw the sign on the building. It's just past this house.

Music: Spitting Chairman

Yes?

(Oh, this person looks familiar to me... Maybe from town...?)

Do you have business here?

Um, we're here to meet Mr. Gerard Perriend...

The chairman? ...What do you need?

We've come from Lugion Village. Lately, the water has begun drying up, so we came here to find a way to save the village. We came from across the Dusk Sea...

You crossed the sea? So you're the young lady responsible for that ship?

Y-yes! Are you... Mr. Perriend?

Yes, indeed. I'm Gerard Perriend. I represent the Perriend Corporation.

I'm Shallistera Argo, and I've come from Lugion Village, across the Dusk Sea...

I know that already. Why did you come here?

Uh, well...

We were told we should really come and talk to you, since we're here in town.

And you are?

...Kortes Argo. I'm like...a relative of Shallistera.

...What do you mean "like" a relative?

Everyone in our clan shares the same last name. We're all family, though we may not be blood related.

Oh...

...You heard about that, huh...

Hah, I practically run this city on my own. Of course I would know.

We're so sorry it took this long to introduce ourselves, Perriend. We were attacked, and the damage...

I don't care about your journey. Your ship damaged this city... That is all I care about.

We came here to find help! But we've caused so much trouble instead... I don't know what to do... Nobody from the city will listen to us. I know it's our fault, but...

Linca!

Yes.

I'm leaving the rest to you. I have things to take care of.

Understood.

W-wait!

He's gone... This was a total waste of time.

Shallistera, was it? I'm Linca, Mr. Perriend's secretary.

Linca?

We already know what you're going to ask of us.

What?

So the old man already knew we were going to come here?

In the meantime, why don't you try working for the people in this city? It would help you to learn about this city in the long run.

Know the city?

What are you good at? I could find you some appropriate jobs...

Um, I'm an alchemist. I'm still not the best, but is there anything I can do to help?

An alchemist, huh? In that case, there are a few jobs requested from the Corporation. Are you interested?

Yes! Of course!

Very well. I'll forward the job requests to the Union, and you can accept them there.

The jobs we've done so far are pretty small jobs, gathering materials from near Stellard. I really want to do more work so we can prove ourselves!

I see... Well, there is an outstanding request to survey some ruins to the north.

Why is it outstanding? There are a lot of adventurers that work in and around Stellard, one of them should have been able to do it by now.

Well, these ruins in particular are known to be extremely dangerous and toxic. If you do accept this job, please be very careful.

Well, what do you think, Shallie?

I think we should try it. If we can jobs like this, we can definitely gather better materials and help the city even more.

Alright then, we'll accept it.

Very good. Please turn your survey report in to the Union. Also, here at the Corporation we sell a wide variety of materials. Some of them may be good for alchemy. Are you interested in purchasing any?

Of course!

I understand. Well, if that's all you need...

Yes! Thank you very much.

Thanks. At least not everyone from the Corporation is like Perriend.

The Chairman can be difficult, but he's not as bad as he seems at first. If you can work hard for the city, I'm sure he'll come around.

I see... Well, thanks again, Ms. Linca.

Whew...

Are you okay, Shallie?

Yes... Time to give it our best shot.

Yeah.

We should get ready.

Yes.

A man obsessed

You're so hard-working today.

Yep! There's still so much I don't know, even about beginner alchemy. Master Wilbell did a great job getting me started, but I have to learn by myself.

That's wonderful, Shallie. Oh? It sounds like someone is as the door.

Al is here!

Hey!

Al? What's up?

I have something to ask. I snuck out when my father wasn't looking.

Again?! You're the heir to a serious business, you need to focus on studying more.

Ugh, you sound like Linca when you say that...

So what was your question?

Honestly...

Shh!! Not so loud!

I can't help it! You've always been obsessed with automatons. You've never found them before...

Ah, but I have a new book here, and it says the ruins to the north are where you can find automatons everywhere! This was written by a well-known explorer, which is why I'm sure the information is true.

Really? This all sounds a little fishy.

No way! He was a great explorer!

What's his name?

Who the heck is that? I've never heard of him. Sorry, I'm not that interested...

Please! I wanted to go myself, but Linca always finds me...

But... Ruins are dangerous!

Shallie... I'll pay you well!

PAY me? ...Well, I don't know...

Okay, well, how about i throw in a meal from our chef?

That's what I'm talking about! How generous of you!

Spared no expense! Okay, I'm counting on you! Make sure to bring back all the automatons you can find! I'm sure there's hundreds there!

I'm not sure about hundreds, but...are you sure Perriend will be okay with bringing back so many automatons? He's never seemed interested in them.

Well, I have plenty of room for them, don't worry.

Okay... Hey Albert, why do you like automatons so much, anyway?

I wish I could explain, Shallote, but there's simply no time to waste! Some other explorer might take them before you get to the ruins, so you should get going soon! Farewell!

Waiiit a second... Is this really okay?? ...I feel like his obvious disregard for spending could be a serious issue. But I'm getting a reward, so I don't have a reason to say no!

We're headed to the Baskes Region. It's on the map, but relatively little is known about the wildlife or species that live there. Surveying this area would definitely be good for improving your reputation, Shallie.

I hope we'll be okay...

Wow, the branch growth in this area is incredible... No wonder how it's hard to survey this area.

Alright, I think I see a way past the forest through here. Follow me.

Encounter in the night

Music: Shining Zoospore

The Land of the Dead. Where fungi gather to grow into mushrooms, and those merge to become even bigger... That's how the mushrooms grow here.

So like... A sea of mushrooms.

Yep. Not many people come here.

...I'm not sure about that.

Huh?

Let's say hello. Maybe he knows something about the kind of place this is.

Um...excuse me.[/i]

...

Hello?

...

Master, I believe these people are speaking to you.

Hm? Oh...

Music: MARIA ORIGIN

Are those... Tribal clothes? If all of you want to go on pointless journeys, go somewhere else.

Pointless journey?!

We came here to stop the water in our village from drying up! That is NOT pointless!

A drought? I'm saying, it's pointless because all you're doing is focusing on one event. Droughts are just one of the things happening on our world.

What do you mean?

Even if the drought in your village is resolved, the world will still be thirsty.

But I have to save my village! Do you know how?

And why are you asking me that? Do you think I'll know?

Well...

Enough. ...We're leaving, Odelia. I'm done.

Yes, master.

Wait! Please... Why were you here?

I don't need to answer that. What a waste of time. Goodbye forever, I hope. (Maybe this area is less interesting than I thought. Still, one more stop today.)

Jurie, have you ever seen that man before?

No, I've never seen him before.

I wonder what he was doing here?

And that woman, could she have been an automaton?

An "automaton"?

It's a product of ancient alchemy with machines that can talk and act like people. From what my father told me, they were much more common a long time ago than they were today. Even now there's only a few that are known to exist.

One thing's for sure, that man is certainly no average traveler.

Hopefully we don't run into him again, though.

The energetic witch

Are you going out, Shallote?

Yeah. Al wanted me to find an automaton in the ruins to the north. He said he'd pay me a lot if I could find one and bring it back.

Are you taking Miruca with you?

Of course!

That's good, she's a good friend. Be careful out there.

I know. See you later!

Master Wilbell! How did you guess?

The Perriend kid told just about everyone. He looked really happy and he kept talking about automatons.

Agh... Jeeze, Al, why? Do you think it's reckless?

Why?

Well you did come all the way out here just to stop me...

Stop you?! Haha!! Actually, it's the opposite. I'm going with you.

Really? ...Why?

Because I'd be too worried if it was just you.

Liar.

How did you know...? Wait, who are you?

That's Miruca. She's a childhood friend of mine, and an amazing alchemist who studied in Central.

Well, not really an alchemist, but a--

What! Oh... I see. An alchemist...

So you're Shal's "master".

Kind of... I guess?

Mmm.

No no! Not at all. It would be reassuring.

That's good. Let's go!

I can't believe I get to travel with you so soon! This is awesome!

Haha, well don't get careless now. Now let's see... Let's fight that monster over there, and I'll show you what Wilbell's grand magic can do!

Music: We Still Have Work to Do

Heh, too easy.

That was incredible! Can you show me how to do that?

That...might be a little hard...

Ugh, what is this place?

I don't know, but I don't think we'll find automatons around here. Let's just get through here as soon as possible.

We can't forget about the materials around here. Some of them look pretty valuable.

What is this thing?

Hm...looks like a Slag Coin. There's not too valuable, but some people out there collect them.

It doesn't look good as a material, but slags are mysterious creatures. Maybe it can be used for something?

I guess we didn't learn that much.

Miss! I'm so glad you're safe.

Thanks Teo. Kortes and Jurie did a great job of helping me fight some of the slags in the ruins.

Shallie, do you still need time to prepare your report?

Yeah, I haven't written anything outside of my notes since I left the ruins. I need to get started and make sure I do a good job on it.

Ancient factory

Urgh, this place is creepy...! That's why I didn't really want to come here...

You won't be able to work if you complain about something as minor as this...

I just don't like dirty places...

I'm fine.

No way. Really? Oh, is it a lot like your house? Like, a huge mess everywhere, things growing in the kitchen and stuff?

Eww... Do you really live in a place like that?

What! No!

Yeah it is! I clean up after you all the time when Jurie isn't around.

Jurie?

Miruca's older sister. She really, really looks up to Miruca.

Huh.

And this place doesn't look anything like where I live, don't blow things out of proportion.

It'll be easy if you think of it as alchemy training.

What does this have to do with that?

Quit your whining. If you don't want to do it, I'll just go home.

Wait! Okay okay I got it. Uuhh, I'll do my best!

Okay, let's go!

By the way...

You're not done yet?

I've never seen an automaton before... How do we look for one?

...I wish you'd have asked that before we got here.

I know what they look like. We'll be fine.

Wait, you HAVE seen one?

Yep. I've been through quite a bit...

Awesome! Just what I would expect! Alright, we better get looking!

Music: Sandy Sea -Ruins-

There are slags everywhere, but I haven't seen any automatons. We should go further in.

It looks like this area might be an abandoned factory. The machines they're using here seem very ancient.

An abandoned factory? But why would the slags come here?

Slags are drawn to ruins for some reason. Though, they've been found almost everywhere. They're usually not violent, but they are very territorial. I don't think we'll have many problems as long as we can find the automaton soon.

Surprise attack

Whoa, is that a person?!

It's shut down, but there's no doubt that it's an automaton.

Really? ... It looks just like a human...

We should head back now that we've found it... I'm so tired of walking.

Are you not used to going to going on adventures like this?

Not really. Most of the work I do is for the people in town, and Imbuing doesn't require as many ingredients as alchemy, so I don't need to leave town very often

Hm...

What?! AHHhhhh!

Wow, there's so many of them...

Don't worry. We can do this.

Let's finish this!

Only one left!

Heh...too easy...

I wonder if they were "Guardians"...

"Guardians"?

Mmm never mind. Let's go.

We're going to keep going?

Well, if we found an automaton here, maybe there's one in the Ruins of Frozen Time, too.

"Ruins of Frozen Time"?

It's a really ancient ruin located northeast of Stellard. No one knows exactly why it's there or what it does. This will be my first time going there!

Music: Gate of Mirages

These are amazing...

Doesn't look there's anything here. We should be safe when exploring.

Hey, isn't that...

Man on a mission

Wait a minute! There's something I can use as a catalyst... I mean, material here! Ooooh, I can sense something rare over there!

Wait! Master!

...What are we gonna do with this?

I'm sure Al will up the reward if we bring them both back... I'll just grab it...

Its feet look stuck in the ground...

What!!

Isn't one enough?

Yeah, but... (Does that mean its been here so long that its feet have melded with the ground...?)

What are you doing?

Um, I'm just trying to recover this automaton...

Hmm. You know about these? I didn't realize there were people around here with knowledge about them.

(What's with this old dude...!)

That one will not work.

(And who's the cutie?! How do they even know each other?!)

Why won't it work?

It's doing its job here.

Job?

Hhm. I guess that is as much as you know. If you don't know what this place is, you should leave. There would be problems if you wake something up with your inept fumbling...

What the...?! Are you saying you know what these ruins are?!

And if I did? Stand aside and let me investigate.

If you don't understand its true value, just leave.

What the heck! And just who ARE you!

May I have a hand.

Of course.

Mm.

(He just IGNORED me?!)

I'm finished here. Let's go. Goodness, it's just one nuisance after another today.

Yes master.

What's with that guy!? What a creep!

It sounded like he was investigating the ruins. Still, you probably shouldn't have talked to him like that.

Hey come on! I just wanted to know what he was doing.

Still, you shouldn't demand strangers to identify themselves.

Grr...

Hey, how much time were you planning on standing around?

Ornery old guy?

He was pretty scary looking, but he had a cute girl following him around!

Huh? (Scary looking, angry old guy with a cute girl following him. Couldn't be...) Shall we head back? You're done now, right?

Yep! I gotta deliver this to Al!

I don't think it's much of an exaggeration to say the response to this thread hasn't exactly been overwhelming a few weeks in, so I would like to make one thing clear before I decide on keeping it going any longer: is there any interest at all in me keeping this thread going? We currently have more than 250 screenshots on one page and four updates, and it doesn't look like discussion will pick up any time soon.

I would like to finish this thread just to round out the trilogy, but I simply can't do that by myself and I end up with 8 million screenshots over two pages.

Man I've been hankering for this one ever since the Escha & Logy lp finished up.
Quick question though: does anyone have any idea where you can buy the soundtracks for the dusk series? I immensely enjoy the music, but havent been able to find anywhere to buy it.

I was just looking around for them, and it seems like Solaris Japan carries all three games' soundtracks, vocal tracks and all.

Anyway, seems I underestimated the readership. I hate the start of every thread for precisely this reason (especially Escha when it seems like half of the first page didn't know I was doing a new thread until like 3 or 4 updates in). There are a number of reasons why I suppose I have this problem every thread, but it just seemed particularly acute this time. Anyway, I'll get started working on Part V tomorrow. Past couple days have been bad for me and free time.

Part V: The Varied Side of the Converging Stories

What's with that old guy?

He didn't seem that bad to me, but I wonder why he came here.

Maybe we'll see him again... He could have at least told us his name.

Let's explore down here.

Treasure! Yes! Let's see...

Aw, I thought they might be a little nicer than this... Still, I guess they can help when we go on new adventures. I got a new broom, too!

Shal, why do you use a broom anyway?

Well, I figure if I can pick up trash with it, then I might as well bring it everywhere. I can even hit monsters really hard with it and do a lot of damage.

But wouldn't you feel safer with a more powerful weapon?

Maybe, but I'm so used to this...

Mission accomplished?

Yes!

Alright. Chairman?

I don't have any more questions. I've heard enough.

Understood.

At least you finished the job... But the work overall is shoddy, and your descriptions too vague. You don't seem to have much knowledge or experience.

What?! Really?

Are you really an alchemist? Because you're totally different from the alchemists I know.

Um...

... If that's all, then--

Wait! Uh...

I'll send for you when I have something more to discuss.

What do I do now?

You've completed your mission. Good work. You may leave. Let's see...your payment is 300 Cole. Here you are.

Huh? ...But...

Father!

What is it? Remember, we have guests... Please keep your voice down.

Oh, sorry... Hey Linca, who're the guests?

This is Shallistera from Lugion Village.

You're from another village? My name is Albert. My dad is Gerard Perriend.

Oh...! It's nice to meet you.

Linca, where's my father? It's important I get something from him! Hurry!

I understand. Shallistera, you may leave. Please come back again sometime.

Okay. Thank you...

A boy's dream

Here is your well-earned reward! You went above and beyond.

Holy moly, this is a lot! Are you sure about this?

Yes, please take it! You have my gratitude. Can I... Count on you if I need something later on?

Yeah! Of course. I have to ask, though, why do you like automatons so much? They're cute, but I wouldn't pay this much for them...

How can you not appreciate their beauty?!

Ugh... Okay, okay...

What's all this ruckus about?

(Oh no, it's Perriend...)

Are you still collecting useless junk? You already have more than enough to do as my heir.

I'm sorry, father... I'll get back to studying...

Perriend... Hello!

You should try to follow your mother, Shallie, and find some real work for yourself.

Okay.

Hahh...

Whew...

(...It's that girl again!!)

Shallie, you okay?

Yeah... We have to keep our heads up!

Yes.

(So her name is Shallie, TOO!)

Is something wrong, Shallie?

Oh, nope. I'm gonna head home now.

Alright, I'll let you know if I need anything else.

Don't blame me if it makes your dad angry.

Don't remind me. Well, I'll see you later, then.

See ya!

She's gone now... I'm sure we'll meet again, though. Well, I'm sure Mom is worried.

But the best part is finding real work, and getting an actual reward! I do kinda feel bad for Al... But this might really help me move forward. If I can make enough, I can finally do what I want... (Wait a minute, now that I think about it...) What DO I want to do?

Shallie! Bath is ready!

Okaaay! I guess I can think about the other stuff later.

Shallote, why don't you help me around the house today?

Sorry mom, I need to accept some jobs. Raoul said he had a bunch of requests today.

Okay. Make sure you get home before night.

Okaaaaayyyy.

What do I do...?

Shallie, you have a guest...

Oh! Please, come in.

Linca, hello!

I've brought an extra reward, and a message from the Chairman.

Extra reward? To be honest he didn't seem that happy with my work.

No, it's not that... He just has trouble expressing himself. Please, take this...

An alchemy book...

It's your extra reward! The Chairman said to "keep up the training". Did you see those books on the walls of the Corporation? The Chairman loves to collect books, but never seems to have the time to read any of them. When he heard you were an alchemist, he said it should go to someone who can use it well.

Really? Perriend...

He knows you're quite sincere and hardworking, Shallistera. But it seems you have your own circumstances and responsibility. He hopes you will gain the capacity to carry that burden.

A responsibility and a way to carry it?

Yes.

(I wonder if he's actually a nice guy...)

That's all for now. I look forward to seeing you later.

I wonder if I'll be able to finish my task.

So, what's next Shallie?

I should focus on alchemy for a bit, then go back to the ruins. I didn't get to explore as much as I wanted to. I'm sure there's more valuable ingredients there.

Okay. Just let me know if there's anything I can help with. I have to help dad with the ship repairs now.

Is it really bad?

To be honest, it's not that the ship is in bad condition, it's just we don't have the materials necessary to repair the ship fully. The impact badly damaged the front and destroyed a lot of machinery that we need to move to the ship. Until we repair it, the ship is stuck in Stellard.

Really...? And we still don't know how to save Lugion.

I hate to say it, but we may be here in Stellard for a while.

I'm sorry I can't do more...

Don't worry about it. That's why we're here to help.

Yeah, I know. Thanks. I'm going to go down and get some jobs from the Union. We could always use more money.

Um... No... (Could he mean the person I saw before...?)

Her full name is Shallote. She's a cheerful girl, but that is basically her only redeeming quality.

Whaaaaat?! That can't be right.

If you ask me, it most certainly is. However, you might find her more interesting. Apparently she's an alchemist as well. You'll probably end up meeting her eventually.

(I wonder what kind of person she is... I want to meet her.)

About the ethos here. If it hasn't changed since before, everyone is mostly concerned with their personal freedom.

Personal freedom...?

In other words... You take care of yourself first... Or, uh...

What's wrong? You're muttering like you've got a mouth full of food.

Nothing, it's just...

Miss, you seem to be surprised after to such a large city for the first time. While everyone in our village is like a family, this is more like a gathering of strangers.

Gathering of strangers?

People live alongside unrelated strangers... Connections different than in the village. In other words... Personal choice and mutual aid are valued highly in this city. You can't expect help right from the start for nothing, but you help each when needed.

...But isn't that the same as the village?

In the village, it's easy to guess what others want, then act on it, right?

...Isn't that what it means to help each other?

There's too many people, so you can't tell how other people feel...? That doesn't seem good at all...

But that's normal here. That's why there's no point in waiting for someone to help. You need to network instead.

It's up to you to work towards an understanding with others here. They won't come to you. You must go to them.

Teo...

If you show an open heart and accept them, the people of htis city will do the same in return.

Okay... There's still a lot I don't understand, but I'll do my best.

Miss Shallistera, you've already shown so much improvement since we've arrived in Stellard. Why don't you walk around the city with Kortes and talk with the people here? I'm sure you'll understand them much more if you speak with them.

Of course. Let's go Shallie.

R-Right!

(Hm...I'm starting to understand the people here, but...) ...Still, what can I do to gain the trust of the people here...? Maybe someone would know... Oh, what about Jurie? She's from Stellard...

So, that's why I'm here today.

You want to know how to approach people?

Yes... When I thought about it, I don't think I've actually befriended someone before...

And that's because everyone in your village is already like family, right?

How did you know?

Because Kortes was always complaining about that.

Kortes was...?

You didn't know? I guess that's not a surprise, though.

(I didn't know Kortes felt that way about the village...) I really don't know anything...

You should stop blaming yourself for everything.

...Huh?

There're people who'll take advantage of that here... Something bad might happen if you keep doing it.

...

...Anyway, befriending people is easier if there's a mutual benefit, or similar interests. That's where it starts. As you spend more time with someone, you understand each other more. That helps mutual trust.

...I see.

Just don't think about it too hard.

Thank you very much... I'll try. (I still don't really understand... But I guess I need to help others, and get to know them, and then they'll listen to me... It seems difficult, but I'll try my hardest...)

There's no reason to think about it so much. You've only been here a little while, and already you've made great progress winning the trust of the people here. You'll get used to it before you know it.

You think so? Thanks Jurie.

What is it, Raoul? Do you have a big job for me to do?

Don't get so carried away. You know how that big ship came from a distant land?

Oh, the one that came crashing into town!

Apparently, the young lady who was on the ship is also called "Shallie".

Young lady? ...Is she a kid?

No, she's just a bit younger than you. Her name's Shallistera, I think... Also, she seems to be a princess...

You're all over the place. I don't really get your point.

Quiet. Anyway, I was just mentioning it because it's an interesting coincidence.

Hmm, another Shallie, huh. This is starting to feel like fate!

She seems to be hard working, but also a little shut-in... Or, I guess you could say she's naive...?

I got it! If we ever end up working together, I'll be sure to train her well!

You don't need to get so excited about it.

(I wonder what kind of girl she is... I wanna meet her...!)

Shallie, didn't you come here to see what jobs are available?

Oh, almost forgot! Sorry!

More trash-cleaning jobs, Raoul?

I know, but someone has to do it. Cleaning crews are already at the harbor, but if you can help out that would be great.

That's a lot of jobs. You think you can handle that much?

Of course, just leave it to me!

Heh...I wonder if you can maintain that enthusiasm.

Just you wait! Okay, now then...I should get ready.

Oh, Shallie, listen! I found some great work for you!

Huh? What kind?

All you need to do is prepare 50 pieces of leather!

...What? Seriously...? ("All I need to do"? That sounds like a ton of work to me...) Uh... Hmm.

What's wrong, Shallie? Does your stomach hurt?

(But mom went out of her way to find this work for me...) Okay! Thanks mom! I'll give it a shot sometime! Ahaha...

I'm glad you're happy. It's great to have connections for work.

...Yeah, I'll do my best... Ahaha... Where did you get this job from?

A clothing designer. She said she needed plenty of material for designing new fashions, and thought she'd ask an alchemist in Stellard to make some for her.

Oh... Okay, I'll do a great job!

I'm sure you will, Shallie. There's no time limit on the job, so feel free to focus on more important jobs first. But I'm sure it would be great for you if you completed it.

Thanks again mom! (Ugh...this job sounds like a pain...) Hm.

What's wrong?

Oh, I don't have the recipe for making leather with alchemy.

Is it that hard? I think you could make some leather without a recipe book.

No...it's really dangerous to try and make something if you don't know the recipe for it. Is there anyone selling alchemy books in Stellard?

Well...I know the Katla girl outside the house had some books with her, and you might try the Perriend Corporation, as well.

Katla and Perriend...guess I'll try there.

Ah, excellent choice! Another alchemist also bought a copy of this book.

Another alchemist?

Yes! A very beautiful girl with long black hair and a strange dress. She was here a few days ago.

(That must be Shallistera! I wonder where she is now...)

There's only so much you can learn from studying alchemy. I can't just study in the atelier all the time. I need to get stronger!

Well, slags make good training opponents because of their predictable movements and behavior while still being dangerous. You're young; I'm sure you'll learn a lot from Kortes and me.

That's nice to hear... We should also survey the area much more than we did last time we were here.

Well, there are ruins to the north and east. I've heard the north has some really strong slags, so maybe that's not a good idea right now. The ruins to the east... I think that should be okay.

Have you been in these ruins before?

Last time was a while ago so I don't remember much about this area, but the Ruins of Frozen Time should be to the east.

Those ruins in the distance are about halfway between here and the Ruins. Let's head there first.

Actually, maybe we could head north a little...

Wow...this is a great material! I'm not really able to use it very well, though, but it will be nice to have.

Alright, let's keep moving.

Doesn't look like there's many materials... I wonder if we'll find any?

What is that? Do you know what it is, Shallie?

I'm not sure... It looks human, but it's not alive, and it looks...stuck in the ground. It might be an automaton.

Why would one of those be here?

I don't know, but I don't think we can move it like it is now. Let's just keep investigating this place.

There are no materials here... But this ruin looks too important to be completely empty.

Well, if there's nothing else here, we should head back to Stellard.

Ugh... There're so many people here...!

This is where treasure hunters meet up for work and information. Maybe it's a little soon to bring you here.

Hey! Stop treating me like a kid all the time...

Sorry. But you'd hesitate to come here on your own, wouldn't you?

Well, yes... (Everyone here is an adult... I hate to admit it, but I really am just like a kid in a place like this.)

Hey yeah, you're right. She's a respectable treasure hunter, after all. I wonder if she's got some business.

I don't know... But why isn't she talking with anyone?

Hmm... It kind of looks like everyone's avoiding her, rather than her not trying to talk to them...

Huh, why...? Do people not like her?

No, she's a good person, just not that social. Plus she's an expert treasure hunter, so she's kinda intimidating.

I didn't know... She's really nice. What a shame.

Oh, Kortes and Shallie. What are you two doing here?

Hi Jurie. Me and Kortes were just about to head to the Union to turn in some jobs.

Oh, right. Kortes, help me out here.

Help you out? It doesn't look like you're doing anything.

No, I'm doing a lot actually. Besides, it'll be good for Shallie if she's on her own for a bit.

You think so?

I know so. Now come on.

Yeah yeah...

Ugh, what a mess. Well, I should finish this up. Hmhmhmhm.....

Really? I still don't really understand it that well...

I should be able to start giving you more profitable work now. But, more money means more trust from the client. It's a big responsibility. Work hard and get it done!

(Okay, I'll do my best!) Are there more jobs in today?

There are, but nothing I think you'd find challenging. Come back in a few days and I should have more for you.

Okay! Thank you very much! (There's still one more thing I want to make right now, now that I'm more comfortable with my alchemy...)

Is that a bomb, Shallie?

Yeah, but...don't worry! It won't explode without a really strong shock. We'll be fine!

Are you sure? Oh! But that means you're getting much better with alchemy, right?

Yeah! To be honest, I was kind of scared to try a synthesis like this, but it turned out alright.

Of course it did! You were the one making it.

Oh, mom... Oh, is dinner ready yet?

Well, I followed the recipe exactly, so it should be safe to use outside of town. I never realized how dangerous alchemy can really be...

I'm Asano, and I composed BGMs and battle sound effects for this game. I'd like to write a long message thanking you, but... There's a word limit on this text. Anyway, thank you for clearing the game! (Asano)

Humming in the Atelier
This atelier theme is based directly off Lotte's image. The chords and build up never calm down (haha). Also, we brought back the cauldron's bubbling sound effect for this game. It's so relaxing! (Yanagawa)

Y'know, I never noticed the bubbling. I'll have to listen for it when I record next.

Song of the Sand Sea Hunters
Theme for the Union. It's basically a den for rowdy people, with everyone shouting orders, so I went for a wild tune. The sound of chains was inspired by a song featuring wind instruments. (Yanagawa)

Spitting Chairman
Theme for the Corporation. I'm sure you'll understand the title if you started with Stera. But if you didn't, give the game another shot, this time with Stera! I need to be more careful when I talk, too. (Asano)

Disappeared Water
This title theme is an arrangement of the opening. I did many arrangements of this song, but often times they only had a little bit of the original. Some people might not even realize it! (Yanagawa)

Sandy Sea -Shallistera-
The BGMs for the smaller maps in this game are arrangements of the world map theme. We did this for Totori and Meruru, too. (Achiwa)

Sandy Sea -Shallote-
Since we have 2 heroines in this game, I decided to use their images to create their own arrangements as well. (Achiwa)

I prefer Shallote's version as opposed to Shallistera's. Just has more...presence, I think.

Sandy Sea -Desert-
Yanagawa was in charge of these arrangements in Totori and Meruru, so this is my first time handling this job. It's actually pretty difficult! (Achiwa)

Sandy Sea -Vegetation-
I thought tweaking the music would be easier, but I was so wrong! You need to make the track follow the progress and tempo of the original, as well as sounding distinct, so there are a lot of limits. (Achiwa)

I wonder if that's the reason they've only done "One major theme, remixes for small areas" thing in only three of the games. Then again, Shallie is kind of weird because it has a very distinct main theme that the other Ateliers kind of lacked, at least from what I remember.

Sandy Sea -Ruins-
Even though it's an arrangement, you can't change too much, but there's no point if I don't change enough... I was relieved after I finally finished all the versions of this track. (Achiwa)

Seeing Off the Daytime Calm
Yanagawa was very particular about adding environmental sounds to map themes. My hometown is small, about 4000 people, and the beach was a 3 minute walk from my house. I'd like to visit sometime. (Asano)

Shining Zoospore
I normally decide on 2-3 key words before I start composing a track. They were "mystery" "calm" and "beauty" for this one. Looking back, I don't know if there were any meaning to that (lol). (Asano)

Gate of Mirages
Theme for ruins with buried automatons. This is another arrangement of the opening. I got a cute, little flute, so I tried using it. (Yanagawa)

Stella -1-
Battle theme for the early part of the game. Those who chose to play using Stera will definitely heard this, so I put a lot of effort into play the guitar. (Asano)

Though I like Lotte's world map theme more, I have to say I prefer Stera's battle themes over Lotte's. It is good they musically gave different feelings to the characters, though. A lesser game wouldn't pick up on something like that, that the music of a game can dramatically affect your feelings toward it.

Until the Day We Fulfill Our Duty
Stera's victory jingle. I was surprised to see Stera uses a bell to break barrels, because at first I thought she was using her bare hands. Although it's pretty amazing to do it with a bell, too. (Yanagawa)

Sweep! -1-
Lotte's battle theme. The guitar, bass, and bouzouki are played by the very familiar Dani! The nnormal battle themes are full of arrangements in this game, so it was actually rather difficult... (Yanagawa)

Also a good directorial decision: change up the battle themes depending on your progress in the game. Too many games (the first Xenosaga being an infamous example of a game with exactly two battle themes: one for every fight that's NOT the final boss, and one for the final boss) don't do this, and even the best battle themes can get very tiring after hearing it, especially with how combat-heavy RPGs I've played recently are.

In addition, not only does everyone who play this game have three different versions of their heroine's battle theme, but people who preordered this game from Amazon got a music pack, with an additional remix of each heroine's main battle theme.

We Still Have Work to Do
Lotte's victory jingle. I can totally see her looking around for valuables after a battle (lol). Her level up animation is cute. I really like it. (Yanagawa)

We haven't seen it yet, but it's Lotte trying to get on a broom and start flying, before failing and rubbing her head. It is really cute, but it doesn't really make sense until later in the game. Also, I like the in-game name for this song more than the translated one: "I Can Still Earn More".

Aquarius
The guitar and bass are played by Dani. It'd be interesting to compare the different tones and solo styles used by the various composers. (Achiwa)

The Girl of the White Sands
Thsi game has two heroines! Pairings of long and short hair are pretty standard, but I wonder what started it? Pink Lady? Beauty hair? (Achiwa)

Blue Sky and Broom Daughter
Shallotte's hair style and character are really uppity, so I went with this title! Shallistera? ...Who's that? She's got long black hair? ...Are you talking about Sonoko Kawai? You don't know her? (Achiwa)

Forearm Ball
Miruca's theme. To tell the truth, this track was finished before the atelier track. Seriously though, I think Miruca is super cute. What do you think? (Asano)

I have to agree, honestly. She's my favorite of the new characters, with the Shallies pretty much tied for me.

Dual Blades and Picture Books
I want an older sister like Jurie. I only have a younger sister, so I can't stop yearning for an older sister. I want to call her "neesan". I'd wag my tail and follow along anyone who'd let me! (Yanagawa)

Baby Bird -Part 3-
Theme for a certain master. When I imagine being able to use magic, the first thing that comes to mind is how easy it would be to get to work by flying... Seriously, I kind of hate myself for thinking about it. (Asano)

MARIA ORIGIN
A certain old man commented about a transforming magical girl in the Ayesha music hall. I was shocked to see that a drama CD actually came out! And the main character was voiced by Jouji Nakata! (Achiwa)

Keith's Japanese voice actor, in case you don't remember the name. This tune in particular was used a lot in Ayesha, and remains one of my favorite songs from Ayesha. It's no less great here.

We're Both Shallie
This is a combination of a lively, short haired girl and a graceful, long haired girl. Now that I think about it, there was a book with a name like "Two Lottes". (Achiwa)

Let's Calmly Talk
A movie I saw recently has started affecting my chord progression... Anyway, I like composing heartwarming tunes like this. I'd like to compose children's songs after I retire. (Yanagawa)

Open the Door
This is supposed to sound serious and solemn, rather than just straight-up sad. The image is of someone suddenly talking openly about their worried and old memories. (Achiwa)

I Don't Get It
This is for situations where you don't know what to do. But then naturally, you synthesize something with alchemy and solve the problem. (Achiwa)

Creaking
Situational BGMs really need to evenoke that sense of "this really fits!" I'm pretty confident about this track. (Achiwa)

Orgel of Youth
I completed this track with a single play. Composing like this results in more honest melodies. (Yanagawa)

Sand Clouds

I've used this title before, but it just fits the image too perfectly not to use it. By the way, the other time I used this title was in Atelier Iris 2. (Achiwa)

Explanation!
Tutorial theme. I really like it when the bass jumps in here and there. (Asano)

Memorize!
Theme for learning recipes. When asked "Do you have a hobby?" I thought it would be cool to say "Cooking". At least I did, until 2 years ago. (Asano)

Cooking is definitely one of those talents I want to have, but just don't seem to have the time to learn.

Listen Here!
A jingle for whne new allies join, and other events. I'm always asking Yanagawa for advice with jingles like this. Thank you. (Asano)

Results Celebration!
Life Task results theme. Oh right, while progressing certain tasks, the sound of Lotte's footsteps changes. Did anybody notice? (Yanagawa)

Rusty Sky
This song is not only used for the title theme, but for various arrangements as well. Please take a listen to the full version of this song, and reflect on the Dusk Sea. (Okamura)

Game version: The opening theme for this game. In order to depict the grand scale of the Dusk World, we asked a new artist, Matryoshka, to compose for us. (Okamura)

Asymmetry
All the artists asked to perform in this series have combined their individual musical talents with the themes and world setting of Atelier. Thank you all very much! (Okamura)

Game version: We asked Chirinuruwowaka to perform the avant-title theme. The setting for this game involves the theme of ships and traveling, so the songs fit into this as well. (Okamura)

First bonus update of a thread is always terrible in terms of number of songs that need to be reported, and I likely missed a few that actually played in scenes I've covered. Ah well, I'll be sure to get everything eventually.

Part VI: The Financial Side of the Girls' Journeys

Monster in the sand

We heard about a ship sinking...

What! Who was on it?

I don't know...

Do you know why it sank?

No, but passengers on a different ship nearby said they heard a Sand Dragon...

drat. ...Not again...

Future direction

Hmm.

What's wrong, Shallie?

It's so hard to save money.

You're trying to save up?

Some extra money would make life a lot easier, and maybe even let me do what I want.

So what do you want to do, Shallie?

Well uh... (I know there's something, but I can never think of what it is!)

Heh, there's no hurry. Just take your time and think about it. There's no hurry to save money, either.

I guess.

You should go spend some time with Miruca instead of worrying all day. Isn't it your day off, anyway?

Miruca, hmm?

It'd be a good change of pace for you.

Oh! I know! Miruca's atelier is doing really well... I should ask her about her secrets to success! Thanks, mom! I'll go see her!

One step forward

What's wrong?

Oh, I'm sorry. I can't seem to find all the materials we need to fix the ship... I've tried everything.

Oh... Well, that's not good... The city doesn't have anything to spare, and we're asking for more than they're willing to part with. We need to do more for the people here and gain their support.

You already have a pretty big job... Please, let me know if there's anything I can do...

Oh Teo, thank you. But we have to work together here, for the sake of our village... I'm going to the Union again to see if you we can get more materials... (They don't even have enough to spare for a little remote village. I just need to work harder!)

Hardworking girls

Sorry for keeping you waiting. Here ya go.

Thank you! With this, I'll be even better at hunting!

The pan broke...

A repair? Apologies, there'll be a little bit of a wait for that...

(This place is so popular! And all the customers seem so happy...)

Oh, Shal? Please get some tea while I talk with these customers.

Oh...okay!

Steel blade

Wha... Who is this?

Oh, Shallie! His name is Homura. He's a homunculus.

Homunculus...?

He may look odd, but he's a capable treasure hunter who works for the Union.

Music: Flame

Nice to meet you, Homura. I'm Shallistera.

Nice to meet you. Shallistera. Can call you, "Shallie"?

Yes, a lot of people call me that.

Okay. Shallie. Where from?

What?

Your clothes are strange. For around here.

I'm from Lugion Village, it's quite a ways from here.

Lugion. Nostalgic.

You know of it?!

Long ago. Visit. Very nice.

The area around the village is deteriorating, so she came here to find a solution to the problem.

Homura... You're worried about us?

Lugion... Gratitude for help. Never will forget. If need something, ask. I help you, Shallie.

Thank you so much, Homura!

There also might be a way to get the materials you need for your ship... Through the Union.

Really?

Not for free, of course. We are many things, but a charity is not one of them.

I'll pay for it!

Alright, just let me know when you've got the payment.A

Are you. Leaving. Town now?

No, I'm going to go back to my ship to see if I have enough money.

I see. Come speak to me. Before you go on. Adventure!

Hee hee, sure.

Shallie.

Hey Jurie! What is it?

There's someone I want you to meet. Come with me.

Huh?

Whew...sorry about that.

You're working pretty hard, Miruca.

Shal... What're you doing here?

Hehe, I'm spying behind enemy lines, as it were...

...I don't get it.

What's your ssecret to such a popular shop?

Why would you ask an "enemy" something like that!

Awww, c'mon! It was just a joke!

...Hahh. I don't have any secrets, I just listen to the customer, do waht I can to help and tell them if I can't. Also, I make sure they're happy with my services.

That sounds easier than I thought...

Imbuing isn't magic.

I wish I could make a lot of money like magic.

There's a lot you can do with just basic alchemy. That's part of the reason the basics are so difficult. Here, you should read this over.

An alchemy textbook?

It's full of useful information for old style alchemy.

Thanks Miruca!

I already mentioned it, but there're a lot of people interested in Central's style of alchemy coming to my atelier.

"Central's style"?

Oh, I guess you wouldn't know much about that... Well, to put it simply, it involves a lot of machinery that can "fold" materials into a base and enhance its properties. For example, with your old broom, I could fold alchemy materials into that and enhance it with new properties. It's why it's called "imbuing".

Oh, I guess they would only have that kind of machinery in Central, huh...

Exactly. Central has a number of skilled agents who can do that kind of work outside of Central, though. Although I'm not working for Central, there's a large academy there for students to learn the basics. Most of the machinery I use I had to build myself, and it's not the same as it was in Central.

But being able to do that is an incredible skill! I'm sure you'll make a lot of money for a long time.

That's possible, but I think that once the craze is over, people like me will need a strong foundation to stay in business. I'll support you if you want to work in this field. I'll do any Imbuing you need, too...

So...?

So, don't settle for just anything.

("Just anything"...?) I uh...

Excuse me, I have a quick question...

I'll uh, check back later.

Oh...!

Is something wrong? I can come back later...

Oh, not at all. What do you need?

Sisters forever?

This is it.

This is... An atelier?

Hey.

Hello... (An atelier... Wow. I've never seen a lot of this stuff before...)

Oh, hey sis.

Wha!

How're you?

Same ol' same ol'.

By sis, do you mean that she's your sister, Jurie?

Yep. Younger sister, actually. She's the top alchemist in Stellard.

She must be wicked smart.

She is really, REALLY good good. Guaranteed.

So, Jurie...

She's also the cutest little sister ever!

What?

That's also guaranteed.

Jurie, can you shut it for two seconds? Sorry about that. I'm Miruca Crotze. I run this Imbuing shop.

I'm Shallistera Argo. I have to say, I haven't seen a lot of the tools in here.

I do suppose they could be unusual to regular people...

Actually, Shallie's an alchemist, too.

Shallie...?

Ah, yeah, a lot of people call me that. (That was the same name Miruca used for that girl she knows...)

Oh, I see. So if you're an alchemist but you have trouble recognizing these tools... You must be an old style alchemist.

Old style?

Miruca studied in Central.

Just a bit. I use a new type of alchemy that uses these tools.

A new form of alchemy from Central...! That's amazing!

Thank you so much, MIruca! What is "Disassembling"?

Oh... As long as you bring me alchemy materials from outside of Stellard, I can disassemble them into their base forms. It's a new technique that's being worked on in Central, but it's proven. If you need a specific ingredient, you might find it be disassembling another.

Oh, that's great!

Don't settle for just anything, huh. (I dunno what she was getting at, but it seems like she knows I've been feeling down.) The foundations of alchemy... Since Miruca is working on IMbuing, I have to find something else to do... Hmm... I guess I can just jump in headfirst and see what kind of alchemic experience I can get!

I'll go ask Solle if there's any work I can help with!

Tiny warrior

Hello. Human.

Whoa! Who's this little guy?

Not little.

] Oh, hello Shallie. He's Homura, a homunculus. He's a treasure hunter who works for the Union. He's also an old friend.

Yes. Solle. Admirable friend.

Admirable, eh.

He just means we're good friends.

Oh! Well, it's nice to meet you! I'm Shallotte. I just started working here.

Nice to meet you. Shallotte.

You can just call me Shallie, everyone else does.

Then. Too many Shallies.

Huh? Too many?

Nevermind. Shallie. What work?

I wanted to help people in town, as an alchemist. I guess.

If need anything. Alchemy. Ask. I will help.

Are you sure, Homura? You're making an awful lot of promises.

I like. Adventure. Exciting. Growing alcehmists. Have good adventures.

Hehehe! Aww, you're interesting, Homhom!

Oh really. Your face. Interesting too. Shallie.

What? What about my face?! Why are you laughing!

He may look unassuming, but Homura is skilled and has a lot of experience. If you have trouble, you should consider asking him about it.

Oh, okay! Thank you so much!

So, is there a reason you're here today?

Oh, I was wondering if there were any interesting new jobs today.

I'm afraid not. Our more professional hunters are taking care of the hunting requests, and there's nothing we have interest in investigating at the moment.

Oh... I see.. Well, I guess I'll see you later then.

Shallie. Come with?

Oh, sure!

Shoot for the stars

Yes?

What should I do to save money?

If saving. Money. Or treasure. Goal is best. We do too.

So you're saying it's easier to save when I have a goal?

First. Save money. To buy shiny.

You and Miruca seem pretty grounded... Maybe that's the secret to success.

Sounds good. Shallie. Work hard.

What? You're not going to stop me? That doesn't seem quite right...

Really?

Hahh... I guess I should come up with a more realistic amount to save... (Hmm, what I can do to make that much money...?)

The grim traveler

Hey, Rose. On your way back from work?

Ah, we meet again, while you're still alive, Shallotte.

Well, we couldn't meet if I was dead!

Oh, well... That's not true...

Huh? Anyway, how's work?

Today was pretty good. Do you want to see all the newly recovered items?

Sure, but I'm trying to save money.

Oh, don't worry, all of my items are very affordable.

Where do you find all of these things?

Oh, different places... You can use these items for alchemy, correct?

Yes, but... I don't think I can use them effectively now. Sorry Rose, I think I'll only buy the recipe book.

Oh, that's quite okay. I'm sure we'll meet again before we die.

Okayyyyy... Thanks.

You want to introduce me to somebody?

I know. They will help. Shallie. I know best information. In Stellard. Trust me.

Okay... So where is this person?

A long walk. Solice Trade Camp.

Trade camp? You mean this person is a merchant?

Yes. Sells many useful things. Grateful.

Oh, okay! Let's go.

Trading post. Just beyond here.

Why is this place called the "Land of Falling Stars"?

A lot of meteorite fragments have been found in this area. It's a valuable source of materials for alchemists like Miruca.

I wonder if we'll find anything like that...

Aw, it doesn't look like there are very many materials around here.

Well, I guess we came at a bad time. Still, we should continue on the trading post.

Wait. Let me help. With fighting.

When you attack. Combine to be more powerful!

Catch monsters. Off-guard!

Is there anything else we need to do here?

No, I think we can move on now.

Traveler of the seas

Over there.

Huh?

Rose!!

Yes?

(Whoa, I didn't even notice her... It's like she doesn't even exist...?)

Oh, Homura. I see you're still surviving.

I never die.

Mm, how brave of you. And who is this young lady?

I introduce. Shallie. From Lugion Village.

Hello... I'm Shallistera...

Another Shallie?

Oh...yes. Another girl in Stellard seems to be named Shallie. I've never met her, though.

Oh, I'm sure you'll meet someday. Oh, where are my manners... My name is Rosemia.

Rosemia...

Still... Lugion Village, you say? You've come quite a distance. Oh, I see. The strange ship in the harbor was yours...?

Yes, we caused an accident when we got here...

Stuff happens, that's life. Though I did end up losing work.

What? We caused you trouble, too?! I'm so sorry...!

Not to worry. Shallie. Rose is, "collector".

A "collector"?

That's kind of a tasteless way of saying it, Homura. I work helping people having trouble out in the Dusk Sea.

Wow, that job sounds wonderful!

Though many times, it's already too late... If that is the case, I give them a proper burial and collect their things.

I see...

I also collect living people sometimes... If something happened to you, I'm sure I could help...

I'm going to try to avoid that happening...

Armor. Weapons. Rare items. Ask Rose when needed.

Of course. Feel free to check what I have for sale anytime.Usually I'm here or in Stellard. I usually only leave when I hear about something wonderful on the Dusk Sea. Do you want to see what I have for sale now?

Of course!

Music: Sandy Sea -Trading Post-

Hmm... I'm not sure if I need anything right now, but if I do, I'll be sure to come back.

Oh, certainly. I'm sure we'll meet again, someday.

Well, see you later, Miss Rosemia.

Oh, you don't have to call me "Miss". Oh, there is a path to the north leading to a set of magnificent ruins. I'm sure you'll find something interesting along the way. Take out your map please...

Oh, that's very helpful. Thank you again!

Music: Sandy Sea -Cave-

Urgh, dragons...

Well, they shouldn't be too bad. As long as we have good equipment and are well-prepared, we should be able to beat them.

Too. Easy!

These are some really valuable ores... I'll have to come back here in the future!

Looks like the cave exit is just ahead.

This will make a good shortcut back to the ruins. It's easier to move across the Dusk Sea than some of the growth around Stellard.

Yeah. Well, we should head back to town to report to the Union.

Thank you, Homura.

You work hard. I like hard work.

Stop, you're embarrassing me!

Shallie. If have trouble. Tell me. Can help. Friend.

Okay, I will. Thank you again, Homura.

Goodbye.

Let's see...next, I need to pay the Union 1000 Cole.

One giant leap

Yep! I seemed to have managed, somehow.

You came off as more a "kept princess" at first, but you sure have proven yourself.

Thank you so much! (Raoul actually gave me a compliment!)

Okay, we'll give you the supplies so you can make your ship even better than it was before!

I'll be happy if it just works...

Haha! No worries, it's part of the deal. Just you see! Do you have any idea what you'l need for the ship?

Uhhh...

Hahaha, don't worry! I'll get in touch with the captain of your ship to see what you'll need. You might want to come back tomorrow for more work, though.

Oh, okay! Goodbye!

We're finally going to be able to repair our ship!

Shallie, you don't have to do so much work on your own, you can ask us for help.

Thanks, Kortes. But I actually like it. I feel like I'm fulfilling responsibilities. I'm still unsure about how we're going to save the village, but we'll find a way. I'll need your support...

Of course. Yes.

Also, uh, where's Teo?

He's double-checking the amount of supplies needed for repairs. We'll leave the ship to my dad so we can take care of other things while we wait.

Lotte's not in this one much because I completed the assignment as soon as I got it. If you've been watching the videos, my Lotte is sitting on 999999 Cole with little variation. Just assume she's been in Stellard earning money while Stera has been outside. It's actually really easy to get 999999 Cole without trying very hard for it in this game because you can grind money as much as you want without a time limit.

Looking forward to the inevitable confusion of having both Shallies in the same party.

Also, Sylphid, it looks like all of Solle's parts (or at least the one's where he's introducing Homura) are using Teo's portrait in this update:

Also spotted a typo in this line of Raoul's.

That's embarrassing, but still not as bad as one of Agarest 2's updates where I got the avatars all wrong for one character in one update after I decided to go with transparent avatars midway through and never caught until I saw it in the archive. Ah well, it's been fixed, thanks.

Part VII: The Unsure Side of the Twin Adventures

Music: Attractive Beach Queen

What exactly are you trying to accomplish!?

That should be obvious!

(Huh? ...I wonder what happened.)

If you continue to let poor residents in from outside the city, public order in Stellard will only deteriorate!

The reason this town is doing so well is because those "poor residents" are here, turning their lives around!

There's nothing wrong with travelers, but that means leaving at some point! That's how the city developed!

So you're saying they're a burden or strain if they decide to live here!? Well, look who's talking!

You're still young, you don't understand what's behind governing a city!

And I don't think some fossil-brain has any right to talk about government!

I believe Stellard is more important than my own individual life!

I feel that Stellard is more important than anything else, too!

(But... It sounds like both of them actually feel the same way...)

(I guess sometimes things don't go well, even when you agree on something... Oh, right! I was going to go Miruca's atelier!)

Music; Daisies and Bells

Oh, Shallistera. How are you today?

Hello, Miruca. I'm very good today, thank you. I wanted to see how Imbuing works.

Certainly. What would you like to make?

Hmm...

Little Miss Moneybags

What are you so excited about?

Hey mom! Check it out! I set a goal for savings and I did it!

Wow, that's great, Shallie! You've always been able to do something if you put your mind to it.

Nooo, stop...!

I have something for you, for all your hard work.

Really? What is it?

Here, it's... More work!

Work...?

They're looking for people to search for something deep in the Dusk Sea. It's just a search, but the reward is huge!

There's no way to survive out in the desert like that...!

You're my daughter... You'll be fine!

Be back by dinner, please!

Hahh... Okay, mom... (If I keep making realistic goals, I can save even more money!)

Now let's take a look at that book Miruca gave me...

As long as you bring me the materials, I can make almost anything you want. I can't make things like you can in your atelier, but I can make stronger equipment to help you when you leave town.

There are so many options...

Once you've selected what you want to make and the materials you want to make it form, I can handle everything from there.

Almost done...

There you are. Of course, there's a fee for making equipment, but I don't charge very much.

It's so high-quality! I'll be sure to come here often.

You're welcome. ...Come again.

Okay. Thank you Miruca.

I want to get something to eat...

...Hahh.

What's wrong, Kortes? Worried?

It's not a big deal. I was just thinking. I didn't think I'd come back to Stellard again. And so soon, too.

By the way, what did you do when you came here last time?

Let's see... I stayed at Jurie's house, and went to a school here. Jurie was still a student then too, and her little sister Miruca was still young. I had to look after her a lot. I never thought Jurie would become a treasure hunter. There were a lot of things I didn't know, either, but I got used to it eventually.

So that's how your views changed!

...I don't think I'm that different from other people in the village.

I thought we needed to bring new ideas to the village, but I didn't think your ideas would be so strange.

It isn't "strange", dad. I just became a little more realistic.

Realistic...?

You know how alchemy is pretty much law in the village, right?

Y-yes.

When I first came here, everything was a surprise for me. I was like you right now, Shallie.

You weren't good with crowds?

I actually got used to that pretty quick...

Oh...

You'll get used to it, too.

You look ill, Miss Shallistera. Are you feeling bad?

N-no... It's nothing. I have some things to do. See you later.

Kortes, you really must be more sensitive to Miss Shallistera. You know how she is.

I didn't think she'd get down like that... Are you sure this is going to be okay?

There's nothing we can do but trust she'll move forward. She has a heavy responsibility on her shoulders, and she'll need our full support.

I know... Should I apologize when she gets back?

No, I don't think you'll need to do that. Just be more careful around her in the future.

Right...

(...So that's what they think... I have to keep moving forward for the sake of the village...)

Oh, you're back.

Yes, I have something I wanted to make. Do you know what kind of weapon Jurie uses?

...Yes, two swords. You want to make a new set for her?

These weapons are for Jurie, right? It seems like it'd be difficult to use two swords at the same time. Has she had special training?

...She's been training for a long time.

So it's due to years of training... Amazing. Beautiful and skilled in martial arts. I really admire her...

My sister is...

Did you say something?

...No. It's nothing.

(She seems...strange about her sister... Did something happen?) Do you know where she would be this time of day?

...Probably around the Union. She always seems to be there.

That makes sense. Okay, see you later Miruca.

See you.

Look, Jurie, Miruca made some new weapons for you.

Oh, these are great.

Um... Um, I... Is it really okay for you to be helping me like this?

...Why so worried all of a sudden?

You're really serious, and you know what you're doing... I feel like I'm not doing anything in return...

Don't worry about it. I'm not the type of person who does things for free.

Then why...

By which I mean, there're benefits for me by helping you. Like that Sand Ship... With that, I can go anywhere in the Dusk Sea. It's more than I could ask for.

I see... That's good...!

Also, you seem to think highly of me, but I'm not really that great. Back when I was a novice, a lot of people ended up helping me out, some without me knowing, even.

I'm not trying to "use" you...!

...Sorry, bad choice of words. I mean, I don't mind if you rely on me.

Jurie...

...I'm not very good at saying things so straightforward like this.

Thank you very much... I'm so happy you told us! I'm an only child, but... If I had an older sister, maybe it would feel like this...

... Well, thanks again for the weapons. Just let me know when you're headed out again.

Sure. (It felt like...she was trying to change the subject...)

Oh, I have some jobs at the Union to turn in. Want to come with me?

Huh? Something?

The amount of items usable by the Union members is determined by their contribution...

That's right. Keep up the good work!

Thank you... Um...

Do you need something?

No... It's nothing.

Very well, I'm off... I will make my report.

(I can't do it...)

Shallie. Down. Something wrong?

Oh, Homura...

When down. Eat sweets. Smile.

Thank you...

Mm. Solle. Sweets. Always good.

...Have you always been in this city, Homura?

Treasure hunter. Travel. Different cities. Everywhere.

Don't you find it hard to connect with people in new places?

Treasure hunter. Lone life. Anyway.

I... I don't know how to connect with people in the city... I feel like they'd hate me if I made a mistake...

O-okay...! Om... Ah... This is good...

Eat sweets. Together. Make friends. Shallie smile.

Friends...

Smile together. Become friends. Shallie. Friend.

Yes... Thank you, Homura...

Are you done, Shallie?

Y-Yeah...

Let's see, what I should do today...?

Oh, it's you... What do you need?

I'm here for training, of course!

Oh, right, training. Now I remember, yeah... Ahaha...

I want to become a great alchemist like you as fast as possible!

... U-um, well first...

This old broom...? Wait... S-swing it!? Does that even have anything to do with alchemy?!

Yeah, pretty much. You need a lot of persistence and strength to become a great alchemist.

I see...! Up until now, I've had a lot of motivation for things, but I always get worn out half way through...

Yup, that's right. Anyway, take this broom and have at it.

Master, where did you get this broom? It's kind of old...

It was my broom when I started learning ma- I mean, alchemy. My master made me learn alchemy using this broom!

You're giving me your broom!? Wow, I suddenly feel so motivated! I'll do my best!

She's not a bad kid, at least...

You know, when I'm holding this broom, I suddenly feel like a magician.

R-really!? Hey, it's important that you stop playing around and swing it 10,000 times!

O-okay!! Here I go!

Are you an idiot? I don't have the free time to watch you. Go do it at your house or something.

I understand! I'll come back to report after I finish! Now...where to practice? Mom's probably not going to like me swinging the broom around the house... Oh! When I go outside! I should get going! First, I need to accept some jobs.

Hello, Solle. You seem really busy!

I'm always busy. Oh, also, I just received some information from a dispatched survey team. There might be a shift in the environment around the city soon.

A change? What could happen?

We don't know yet. It's unknown whether anything will happen, but changes do occur in this region quite easily.

Huh... Do you know why?

It's my job to find out. That's why I was dispatched here.

The environment here shows signs of decline. Even the smallest change can affect many other places. However, if this region had already been consumed by the Dusk, the environment wouldn't change.

(I don't get it... But since I live here, I can't completely ignore it...)

When the environment changes, I'll get more information. Come talk to me if you need to know anything.

Um...do I need to do anything?

No, this information will come straight from our dispatched teams. The only thing you need to do is keep the information in mind when you go out on your investigations.

Shallotte. Head to the north. Find trading post.

Really? Let's get going then!

Just a little. Further.

Is that...Rose?

Hello Shallie. What are you doing here?

Hi Rose. Homura here is showing me around this area. I've already found some great materials.

Homura? You are helping out a lot these days. Didn't I see you with another girl a few days ago?

Yes. Am helping. Humans with their problems.

That's great. I hope you have a fun time with them.

Rose, you come here to sell materials, too?

Yes. This is a good spot for trading with people all over the Dusk Sea. It's nice to get out of Stellard every now and then, too...

Are you still selling all your materials?

Of course, take a look.

Hm, I'll take the Chain Armor and the recipe book.

Excellent choices. Will you be on your way now?

Yeah, see you later Rose.

Just go through. This cave.

Phew...we should probably head back to Stellard now.

Good idea. I'm tired...

Master ... I finished ...!

Waah! You're a total mess! Shallie, what happened to you!?

You're the one who told me... To swing the broom 10,000 times... Well, I was practicing a lot while we were out, and just now... I finished... Ugh...

N-Now that you mention it, I did say that...

Then do that mean I can move on to the next step!?

Huh!? That's... Um... N-not yet! It's still too early to teach you!

Whaaaat!?

The Grand Master always said the same thing to me...

Grand Master...? Wait, was she your master or something!? Wow! I'm sure she's an amazing alchemist!

Huh!? Uh, yeah, that's right! She's really crazy... At alchemy! Anyway, you just need to keep up the hard work. I"ll train you when I think you're ready.

Whaaat, when's that?

I mean, yes, thank you!

I admit it's impressive that you finished this assignment. I know you can do anything with that spirit.

Yes...! I'll work even harder!

So, what are you going to do now?

I was going to get something to eat.

Shallie...

I mean, I'm headed back to my house to work on more alchemy!

That's better. Now get going!

Yes, Master!

Oh, Shallie, Miruca is here.

Really!? I gotta tell her...!

She's still fairly young, but she's very capable with her work. But she's also usually very easygoing and cute. People from Central are so amazing!

What are you talking about? Just because someone's from Central doesn't mean they're skilled.

Huh? But isn't education and stuff a lot more organized in the big city?

True, there's documents and facilities established. But using them is up to each person's drive.

What kind of people did you meet in Central?

Too much money... So Central's filled with rich people. That's kind of amazing on its own.

What about it?

...Huh?

...I'm leaving. I'm going back to my shop if you need me.

...

Hm? Did Miruca leave already?

Yeah, we were talking about her time in Central, and I said something, and she left...

Oh my... Maybe she doesn't like Central very much?

I think so... She never likes talking about her time there, and always leaves when we start talking about it...

That's sad... Well, did you want something to eat?

Actually... I think might go to Miruca's.

Miruca, I...

Don't worry about it. Do you need something?

Y-yeah! I need you imbue my broom a little.

Certainly, let me see it...

Here, Shal, your weapon's done.

Yay, thanks! So you really DID base it off master's broom.

It might be a broom, but the handle is still a weapon. You can even use it to clean!

Duh, it's a broom, but... Ehehe, that makes my weapon sound really awesome!

Don't worry, I'll always find a way to make sure you aren't totally useless.

Aww, thanks. ...Wait, what's that supposed to mean?

More cleaning jobs. I know, I know, but someone has to do it, and right now most of our hunters are just too busy.

The time of the year for monster hunting?

Yep. Right around this time the monster populations get too large and we have to send out extermination teams. It's not really dangerous work, but we do need more staff this time of year.

Well, at least I'm not ONLY doing trash pickup.

Yep, you have a lot of jobs you've accepted. I hope you can fulfill them all.

You better believe it!

Now where should we start...?

Another busy day, huh?

Yes. I can't waste any time helping my village. Oh, this request is a little strange...

Which one? Oh, that...

Are you going to take that request? I'll explain it for you. It's for items that could help with exploration. It's intended for alchemists.

Items for exploration...

Tools for protection, medicine for recovery, lots of things that are useful for exploration. I've got a list here. I can't give you much unrelated information, but apparently she'll be working on a pretty tough objective.

I see... Jurie sure is amazing.

Anyway, we're counting on you. You seem good at this stuff, I'm sure you'll manage just fine.

Yes, I'll do my best!

By the way, have you met the other Shallie yet? She was just here.

Oh, I missed her? No, I haven't yet, but I know she's working as an alchemist.

That's right. With the volume of requests we get, having a second alchemist handling the requests is a big help. I'm surprised you two haven't met, though.

Me too, but I'm sure I'll see her someday. Oh...why is Homura out?

Oh, I guess he's helping the other Shallie right now. Well, I'm sure you'll be fine if you have Jurie around.

Yes. Well, I have to get started. See you later.

Good luck out there.

Wolves. Dangerous monsters.

Not as dangerous as that, though! Run!

I've never seen this monster before...

Shallie, watch out!

Is everyone alright?

I'm okay.

Yes. Thank you Kortes!

I'm surprised how many materials are here.

Well, it's easy when the three of us work together. I'm doing twice as much work as Kortes here, though.

I'm sorry I'm not as well-trained for this...

Don't worry, Kortes is a big help out here.

Well, he is good for something at least.

This basket...is getting kind of heavy. We should get back to town.

Raoul, I've finished Jurie's request. Here you go.

I'll let her know it's done. By the way, every now and then people you know will turn in requests. I'm sure it would be great to help them out. After all, they're doing more than helping you.

Yes. Everyone has their own things to do, and it's the least I can do for them...

It's a..."Small Relic"?

Yeah, I've heard things like this were valuable to alchemists. Thanks to you, my work is going to get a lot easier... Thanks again.

You work as a treasure hunter, right?

Yeah.

So, you need items like that because your work is dangerous...?

Well, yeah... I can't help that. There're lots of dangerous jobs.

But... You don't ever feel scared or anything?

Always.

So then why...

Why would you go that far to work as a treasure hunter?

...Because it's the easiest way making lots of money.

I guess so... Is that really it?

Hm... I guess not, but I've been doing this for a long time, and the Union is counting on people like me. Besides, being a treasure hunter can be a lot of fun sometimes, too.

Oh really?

Yeah, but right now, I have some things to do. I'll tell you some stories later, though.

Thank you! See you later.

(Jurie's over there... What kind of book is she reading?) I can't see it from here...

Hey, Jurie's reading books again.

I'm sure she's still trying to find pirate treasure or something.

Even we couldn't find it. Gotta hand it to her... She has persistence. To a fault.

(Pirate treasure...? What's that?) Um... Jurie? What kind of book are you reading?

It's a fairy tale.

A fairy tale...?

You can't underestimate these things. Legends in many places describing treasure are based on reality.

So that means there's a legend in this region too?

Ghost ship...!?

There aren't people or anything. The only things left are silence and darkness, and unfathomable treasure...

Does that mean you're looking for that treasure?

Yup. I'm still not sure where it is, but it's sleeping somewhere in the Dusk Sea... I've been looking for it a long time... I'll definitely find it.

(There's something that amazing? ...But does it really exist?) Why haven't you found it yet?

The Dusk Sea is a big place, and until I met you, I didn't have my own transportation I could use any time. Of course...

I know, we're trying to fix it. But I wonder where it could be...

This book is mostly just about how it sank and what's in there, but I'm sure I can find it. It is strange how no one has found it yet...

Oh! I forgot to tell you, I was going to go back to the ruins to the north again. Do you want to come with me?

Oh yeah. Let's get going.

Phew! That was a lot of alchemy! I'm tired...

Well, looks like we've completed our investigation.

Let's not...attack that big slag right now...

And while I'm here, the water in the village keeps drying up... Well... I can't just wait for someone to help me! I know there's something I can do myself!

Not to spoil TOO much, but the Shallies will meet each other next update. It is kind of weird it takes them that long, but part of the fun of the second playthrough is seeing early on what your protagonist is doing while the other is off-screen. I've tried to integrate the two stories as much as possible without them crossing over when they shouldn't, but it gets a little awkward they're never in the same place other than a couple times and often have to miss each other by moments for one protagonist to not be completely lazy.

I've also struggled a bit with balance between Lotte and Stera. Stera's my favorite of the two, so a little prejudice comes through on my end, but hopefully the balance was a little better this last update. Also, someone from a previous game may or may not show up early next update, as well.

Also, just wanted to comment on Lotte's latest evaluation. It mentioned my most synthesized item for the chapter was Miruca's starting weapon, the Flame Bunker. That's a load of crap. I only synthesized one of those, and synthesized like 8 or 9 pieces of leather. I dunno, these evaluations just seem very strangely judged if you ask me. I've never been able to ascertain why it says what it says sometimes.

Also, just wanted to bring up something that doesn't really fit in naturally with the story but is a part of the gameplay. There's something called the Motivation Meter in this game. As you proceed through the storyline and accomplish objectives in a timely manner, it'll go up. If you're playing normally, by chapter 3 it should be maxed out (starts halfway filled). If you take a while to accomplish main story objectives, it'll go down.

What does this affect? Not a whole lot. Lotte and Stera move faster the higher the gauge is, and apparently you get more materials per gathering spot the higher it is. I haven't heard what else it affects, if anything. It's not a big deal at all to maintain max Motivation throughout the entire game, but Chapter 5 may slow you down a bit to gather materials for a boss battle. However, once you hit chapter 10 it maxes out and can't go down.

Late Edit: While I'm working on the next update, here's a little question for everyone. Bonus points to whoever gets it right first: What is special / interesting about Solle's coat?

Nah, nothing to do with that.

Also, today on a lark I decided to look up some Atelier Sophie stuff. The aesthetic of the game looks really interesting. Kind of a mix between Hidari and Mel Kishida's artwork, with realistic looking characters with very cartoony clothes, and oh yeah, Punis are back! They've been completely absent for three games. I kind of wish the game wasn't being developed for the PS3 and PS4 / Vita. Six games in a single series is quite enough for one console (probably too many if you ask me), and I just feel a PS4 / Vita only game would probably look nicer without having to compensate for a weaker system. Also seems like there's a day / night mechanic, which is also new.

I'm sure it will also be fun to dress Sophie in new costumes, which is admittedly a nice feature, and one I'll likely make use of, even though of Sophie's outfits I've seen so far, her default one is my favorite.

Ah well, I'm sure I'll enjoy it, even if the game is probably 6-8 months out from NA and Europe.

Aye. Well, at the very least, the PS4 has been a lot more successful than the PS3 at the same point in its lifetime. Hopefully within a year or two we'll be seeing the end of PS3 / PS4 development, even from small developers, and focusing solely on the shiny new graphics only available on your PS4. The transition from PS3 -> PS4 (or any of the equivalent transitions from MS and Nintendo) is not as big a leap as PS2 -> PS3, but I have a feeling developers are only still scratching the surface at this point. I'm honestly kind of hoping Sophie doesn't have any sequels, just so Gust can take a year to develop a fresh Atelier just for the current-gen consoles. Here's hoping.

Though, I have to say my currently most-anticipated game is Land of No Night. Not only does it tick all the boxes for a game I would be interested in, but it's always good to support new IPs, and there's a dearth of those in my current PS4 library. I'm still playing my PS3, but it's only to wrap up games I'm interested in, and within a year I probably won't be playing it anymore. The old girl's done some good work, though, some drat fine work.

I'm pretty sure Solle's coat is now red to match his dad's rank or just to match his dad. I would say it's literally his coat, but I'm not sure that would fit at all.

Also, most important Sophie news is the return of Pamela, Music is still pretty great, and (edit) Logy is back. I guess he might be the new Hagel, since it might not actually be the Dusk series Logy.
http://gematsu.com/2015/10/atelier-sophie-adds-logy-atelier-escha-logy

You got it. Solle has the same coat as Colland did, but I would assume it's more related to one's position within whatever organization Central has as a sign of rank. I would guess he's moving up in the world. Good for him.

Also, that's really interesting about Logy. It might not be the same person, but it would be really confusing to have characters from unrelated stories within the same series having the same name. If it is the same Logy, that would make me much more interested in Sophie's story. As it stands, all I really know about it is "Sophie is a pretty typical Atelier protagonist, she has a magic book friend she wants to turn into human".

Also, just for posterity, Gust took a popularity poll for the Dusk series. The results may surprise you.

http://social.gust.co.jp/pc/event/a16/finalvote

1. Ayesha
2. Escha
3. Logy
4. Shallistera
5. Shallie Wilbell
6. Miruca
7. Shallotte
8. Odelia
9. Linca (thought she would poll higher)
10. Flameu
11. Ayesha Wilbell
12. Escha Wilbell

Guess it doesn't surprise too much for Wilbell to far and away be the most popular with all the votes added together (6,422 vs. Ayesha's 4,864), but Logy surprised me how high he ended up ranking. Also good for him. I wonder which two characters would take 11 and 12 if all the Wilbell votes were added together.

Part VIII: The Energetic Side of the Talented Girl

The tailed girl

This is such an amazing sight... So this is Stellard. It smells different from Colseit.

The final step

It's ready, miss!

Teo? What is?

We've finally come up with a plan for repairing the ship.

Really!?

But it seems we need more material than previously expected.

You mean... Stuff we didn't ask the Union for?

Unfortunately, we only requested the minimum amount.

Hmm... What else do you need? The ship looks okay...

Well, I've been able to fix the exterior of the ship and repaired a lot of the damage to the ship. The only problem is that we still can't use the ship to go anywhere. It's stuck until we get some new materials.

I see. Well, tell me what I need and I'll go get it.

That isn't necessary. I can ask Kortes to take care of it.

No. It's okay. I want to work hard and earn recognition. If I don't, we won't be able to save the village.

Alright miss... In that case, you may proceed... But please, be careful.

I will. I just need to get you the materials, right?

Yes. Kortes has already submitted a job request to the Union for many of the materials we'll need. You might want to start by going to them.

Okay. Thank you Teo.

Not at all. It's my honor to help you. You carry the hope of our village.

I know. It's such a great responsibility, though...

Miss, you've proven to me already you can do it. We're all here to help you, and the people of this city are already beginning to accept you.

You think so?

I know, Miss.

Another bright day

Good morning, Shallie. My, you seem excited today!

Really? Hehe, maybe it's because I'm enjoying work.

I'm sure you could build a palace all on your own! I should start finding work for you, too.

That's alright, mom, I can find my own work.

Oh. I see.

You heard Miruca. It's your own responsibility to find and do your own work.

I wouldn't expect any less from Miruca.

I know! I'm proud of my friend. Alright, I'm off!

The great alchemist?

Wait, do you have a new employee?

She's an alchemist we had come by. Didn't I tell you?

Oh, the very capable someone-or-other...

You don't need to exaggerate...

I'm Escha Malier. I've been dispatched here from the Colseit branch. Nice to meet you!

I'm Shallote Elminus! You can call me Shallie. I'm doing my best to become an expert alchemist!

Oh, then we're on the same page!

Huh? Really?!

I started working 5 years ago, but there's just so much to learn... Even my coworkers say its difficult to become an expert.

I think it might just be thoughtlessness in your case...

Whaat! That's not true...

Have you known Escha for a long time?

She started as a rookie when I was working at the Colseit branch.

Solle scared me at first, but he has amazing skills... He still kinda scares me...

Haha, that's enough...

He might come off as a tough guy, but he's amazing at making sweets!

Solle makes. Best shiny. For everyone. We all like.

Wow, Homhom seems like he really likes him...

People who like. Shiny. Never bad. Truth.

How is my ability to make sweets related to my performance as your senior, you two?

Doesn't. Matter.

Exactly! Making sweets is much more important than that other stuff!

*sigh* You're just like you were back then, Escha.

Looks like you're already getting along with Homura! I'm sure we'll get along too, since we both study alchemy!

Ohh, I can't wait! (She seems really cool. A lot of drive to get things done...)

(Obviously she didn't learn well enough) Sorry for interrupting, but here's your next job request.

Thank you! ...Wait, is this... Synthesis?

The requester's name is Shallistera. Oh yeah ,the owner of the ship that came to town recently... Have you met her?

(Is she the girl with the same nickname?...)

You want the job?

Oh! Yeah, I'll take it!

Very good. Make sure you confirm the details with Raoul before you get started. There's no time limit on the request, but the materials are fairly difficult to make. Make sure to be careful with this one.

Oh...sure! Thanks Solle!

Now then, Escha...

Oh...yeah! I have to get started, don't I?

As soon as possible.

Right, time to get to work!

I can't go back and ask Solle, he'd never give me any more work! What do I do?! Okay well... I guess I'll just wander around asking people who look like they might know!

Oh, Escha! What are you doing here?

Well, when I was talking to Solle about coming here to Stellard, I asked him if there was anything I could do here. He told me there were a lot of alchemists here, and it would be great for them if an experienced alchemist could come here and start selling valuable ingredients.

Oh! That's a great idea! Have you started selling materials yet?

No, not yet. I still have to travel a little and find out what ingredients grow around here, and what could be valuable to the other alchemists here. I'm sure I'll find something, but I only just arrived here, so it'll take some time.

I see... Oh! I wanted to ask you something! Do you remember that request from Solle that I accepted?

Oh, that...? That's the one from Shallistera, right? Are you related to her?

Um... I don't think so, but it seems like she's an alchemist here in town. She put in a request for some valuable materials for her ship, but I have no idea where to start with this. I was thinking you might be know something about it. Here's the request...

Hm... These are some unusual materials. I've never worked with them, but I think they might be useful for helping large objects move up and fly off the ground. Items of these quality really could only be used for big objects like ships.

Ships...flying... Master!

Master?

Sorry Escha, I have to go! I'll stop by later!

Haha, okay, see you.

Sweets and other things

Oh, Shallie, perfect timing. The alchemist we recruited is here. I'll introduce you.

Ah, I'm Shallistera Argo, from Lugion Village. I still have a lot of alchemy to learn, but I hope I learn a lot with you...!

Hehe, I didn't know anything when I first started, either. So, let's both do our best, yes?

Working hard is one of Escha's more redeeming qualities...

Heh, really?

Uh, do you two know each other?

Solle was my senior when I became an official. He's always been super strict...

That's because...

Solle. Good person. Gives best shinies.

The best... Shiny?

Oh, Homura, you're here too!

Escha. I'm capable hunter.

You haven't changed at all!

You know Homura, too?

I met him a few times when Solle was working in Colseit.

How's Colseit doing, by the way?

Everyone's doing pretty well. The apples harvest this year was huge!

...I'm not talking about apples. I'm talking about the Dusk.

Oh! S-Sorry... There's a lot of people who support the investigation of the Stellard region. After learning that the water source here was having issues, people started worrying... They're thinking the water in Colseit could dry up at any time...

I thought so. Escha, Shallie is here because the Dusk crisis is putting her village in danger too. I hope you support her when she goes to survey the areas around Stellard.

I look forward to working with you!

Likewise.

(The Dusk crisis...)

Oh, also Shallie, there's someone who's responded to your request.

You mean the materials to repair our ship?

Yes. However... They haven't delivered anything yet. Do you mind waiting just a little while longer?

Of course not. I'm just glad someone accepted it! Thank you!

There's no need to thank me, but the person who accepted it was another alchemist. They should be able to finish your request soon.

Another alchemist...? That's great! Okay, I'm leaving now!

An alchemic chat

Escha, hello.

I was talking with Solle and he told me that Lugion Village has a long alchemic history...

Yes. In the chief's household, the child with the greatest talent for alchemy is chosen to be the successor.

Does that mean... You're the next chief?

Yeah... For now.

For now?

It's true I'm not that great with alchemy... Another child with greater talent could be born. Solle mentioned how talented you are as an alchemist... And you're still so young! You have my respect.

Oh Solle. Always exaggerating.

So... Is there any way for me to get better at alchemy, or is it all just a matter of natural talent?

Well it's not just talent. You have to work hard too. Alchemy seems like one of those things that almost anyone can learn, but when you really look at it...

Most people can't seem to understand how it works, and they get confused trying to explain it to themselves rather than feeling it for themselves.

Wow... Exactly what I was thinking! In my case, I thought using alchemy for work was fun. I wasn't that great at first, and I know I still have a lot to learn. There was this co-workrer back when I first became an official... His name was Logy, and he was always so encouraging.

Alchemy to do work... So where is your friend now?

Oh, he's still in Colseit helping Central there. They still need a qualified alchemist there to help the branch develop even after I left.

I see... Hmm...

Shallie, do you not like alchemy?

No no, that's not it... The only thing I have is alchemy!

Just don't think too much about it. You'll get used to it before you know it!

Escha, what kind of place is Colseit? What kind of work do you do? If you don't mind, please, tell me!

Of course. Colseit is famous for apples. There're a ton of orchards there. Oh, and my family also owns one too...

Hm... But wasn't Solle talking about the Dusk in Colseit?

Yes, the Dusk has come Colseit as well. We're been getting decreased harvests for years, so apples are really saving the city now. Central has been a lot more interested in the region since me and Logy solved the mystery of the Unexplored Ruins, so it's a much busier town now than a few years ago.

The...Unexplored Ruins? That sounds really interesting!

You never heard about it? It was a really big story in Colseit and Central, but maybe places far away like Stellard might have never heard of it. Do you want me to tell you?

Oh yes!

Hm, let's see... Well, I grew up in Colseit. I always knew about the Unexplored Ruins, a large ruin floating high in the sky above the city. Nobody had ever been there before, but it was always my dream as an alchemist to go there and find out what it was. Well, after me and Logy looked all over the materials to construct an airship, we went there together.

We found out that the Unexplored Ruins were actually an ancient alchemy laboratory. The girl who was in charge of the facility had sent the ruins high into the sky so she continue working on her research to help the world's plants and hopefully grow all of them back. But...things didn't work out very well for her, and after so long she had forgotten who she was and what she was doing, and...

Well, a lot of things happened, but eventually the Ruins fell back to the ground and me and Logy worked together to make sure the girl and the ruins wouldn't be dangerous.

That's...That's an amazing story! Do you know where the girl is now?

No... She was happy me and Logy set her free from the Ruins, but I haven't seen her since she stopped by my family's orchard shortly after everything had happened. I'm sure she's still somewhere, though...

Um... I'd be happy to help you look for her!

Hahah, don't worry about it. It's not really important right now, but thank you. Oh, I'm sorry... That story took a long time to tell. You must be getting bored, huh?

Not at all! That was really interesting to hear. Wow Escha, I had no idea you had done so many amazing things already... I don't feel like I've done much at all.

Well, it was only because of my friends I was able to do all of that, and you're still young! I'm sure you'll have plenty of amazing experiences here in the Dusk Sea.

Fated crossing

I don't see any difference between this grass and the other grass... Besides, I just wanted to ask you something about alchemy!

How do you expect to learn alchemy from me if you can't pick magical grass correctly? And anyway, It's about the spirit!

Huh??

Ah...? Your name was "Shallie", right?

Yes... I'm Shallistera.

Oh!! I'm Shallotte.

Shallie, short for Shallotte...

...And Shallistera! Yeah!

What...? Do you have the same nickname or something? Not that it really matters.

Heh... So what are you doing, anyway?

Alchemy training!

Alchemy? Are you...

I'm Wilbell. I'm kind of like this girl's master.

Master Wilbell is an extraordinary alchemist.

Really?

Yup!

Oh, I'm so sorry... I didn't mean to interrupt your training...

Oh, it's okay. I was thinking about taking a break, anyway.

Oh good! Would you like to come by my place? It's really close!

Is that okay?

Of course! Shallie, wanna come?

Wait... Me? But...

Don't worry about it! C'mon!

Okay then! I'm interested in seeing where another alchemist lives and works...

Wow... It's actually pretty decent.

Excuse me... What a cute atelier!

It's not quite finished yet...

No way, it's so cozy and warm!

True... This atelier is a little like its owner.

Stop... You're embarrassing me...

You should visit my atelier sometime, too!

What!? You're an alchemist, too?

Um...yes, I'm currently working as an alchemist here in Stellard. I do a lot of adventuring, too. Have you ever been to the ruins to the north?

The one with all the slags?

Yes. What about the mysterious blue ruins to the east of there?

Of course! Me and master Wilbell here went there a few weeks ago. Wait... Have we gone to all the same places?!

Wow...we might have!

(These two sure became friends fast...)

Oh, Shallie, hello.

Hello.

Oh, right! Mom, her name is Shallie, too.

I'm Shallistera... Nice to meet you!

Wow, two Shallies! I almost feel like I have another daughter. So happy! And who is this young lady?

Oh, she's my master, Wilbell!

Hi...

Shallie and Wilbell. You two seem pretty reliable.

I wouldn't really...

I know my girl can be quite the free spirit, so try not to let her attitude overwhelm you.

Oh, it won't, don't worry.

Heheh...

Mom! Stop it, oh my gosh! Just go!

Oh dear. Well. Please, make yourselves at home.

Sorry about her...

No, she's a lovely mother.

I see why you're a little normal, at least.

What do you mean, "at least a little"?!

What?! It's a compliment! Anyway, Shallie...we need to get back to work. C'mon.

Oh, you're going to keep training?

Yeah, I was right in the middle of teaching Shallie about magic grasses when you arrived.

I see... Well, it should be great practice for you in the future! I'm going to go ahead to the Union for some jobs. I'm sure I'll see you later, Shallie!

Yeah! Take care, Shallie!

Emergency help

Please! You're the only one I can count on, master... This is a job I got from Shallie! I'm sure it's really important to her that I finish as soon as possible.

Well...this really is something you should do yourself, but if it's for Shallie, then I'll try. Give me the request form.

...
Wait a sec... This recipe looks familiar!

Really?

Get the cauldron ready and wait!

Wait, what is---?! Oh, she's already gone.

Hahh, hahh... Oh... Escha... Long time no see...!

Oh wow, Wilbell? It really HAS been a long time! I didn't know you were visiting Stellard!

All a part... Of the training... Of a magician!

I see... Well, what have you been doing here? I just got here recently...

Okay well, wait, we'll talk about this later. There's something I need to ask you.

Ask me?

Take a look at this request.

Oh...! This is the same one Shallie showed me. You know her, too?

Yeah, for some reason she started calling me master and asking I teach her alchemy. I don't know much alchemy other than when I was traveling with you and Logy, and with my last alchemist friend.

You never told me much about her... Well, this recipe... Do you remember that airship me and Logy worked on?

Hahh... Of course. You had to travel all over the place to get the materials.

Well, this recipe seems to be based on a similar design. Give me a second... There! It's not perfect, but if you use the same principles in this synthesis, Shallie might get something close to the same idea me and Logy worked on, but with much fewer materials.

That's great! Thanks Escha, see you later!

Hahh... Hahh... No worries! Not a problem.

Why are you so tired...?

Hahh... Don't worry about it. The notes are on the back. Master Wilbell can help you anytime! Now, I think I'm going to go take a nap... See ya, Shallie.

Goodbye master! Let's see... Aha! Adding Gravistones, adding the counterbalance with metallic ingredients... Alright, I know what I'm doing... Let's give it a shot!

Wow... I met three new people today, and they're all alchemists. It's pretty incredible how many people are practicing alchemy here in Stellard. Oh wait... Teo left something.

So we need these materials... I don't think I have any of these two materials. I should check for recipes in town

Hm, Algemein Plywood is a very fine material that can only be made with alchemy, but Mixed Oil and Ancient Stones are materials, but I've never worked with Ancient Stones before... I wonder where you could find them. Well, first I should find the recipe first... Katla or Rose should have it.

Yes, I think I'll take this book.

Excellent choice, and a special price for my favorite customer!

Um... Katla, I have a question. Where can you find Mixed Oil and Ancient Stones around here?

Hmm... Well, I don't travel very much, but I think I saw some in the factory ruins to the north, with all the slags. They're kind of rare there, so you might have to look pretty hard.

The ruins to the north... Thanks Katla! I'll be sure to come back as soon as I need something.

No no, come back even if you don't need something!

Wow, I really can do things if I set my mind to them...! I need to get this to Raoul! I wonder if the other Shallie will be proud of me... I've been on a roll lately... I guess learning the basics and having a goal really pays off!

The advancing goal

I can do really great things like this when I put my mind to it...

That's the spirit! Maybe I can find you an even bigger job...

Really??

Yes... There aren't enough collectors to take care of all the people who die in the Dusk Sea. They need burials...

Oh uh... Wow, I don't know about that...

You'll never get anywhere if you're picky about your work, you know.

Oh well uh... Anyway... Please give the item I made to the client!

Oh, so, about that... Do you mind delivering it yourself?

Wha? Me?

I suppose...

The client is in the big ship on the edge of town.

Hahh... Alright, I'll go.

Sorry... And thank you.

That should do it for the Plywood, what's next...

Friends from this day forward

Oh, Shallotte!

You can just call me Shallie. Oh wait, that might be confusing...

Nah... You can just call me Shallie, too. Hehe! Why did you come here today?

What!? (Are these... Materials for the ship?! Shallie was the one who took our order?!) Wow... The quality on this is incredible!

Is this enough? The request only specified a floatation device that could be attached to a large machine, but I'm not skilled enough to know what a large ship like this would need to move...

Yeah, it's amazing! I don't even think I could make this!

It's not really that great, but I"m glad you're happy. Honestly, this is the first time I've done this kind of synthesis... I wanted to do my best, hearing it was for you.

Shallie... Thank you so much!

This is for helping with the ship's repairs, right?

Yep!

Shallie, you must be from somewhere far away... Is that why you work so hard?

No, I'm not... I don't know much, and I'm struggling to fulfill my responsibilities... It looks like you've found what you want to do with yourself... I look up to that.

Ahah... Actually, I'm still trying to figure out what I want to do.

What? But you can make amazing things like this with alchemy...!

I'm just training in alchemy because I have no other options at the moment. I'm totally broke. It's tough.

...I see...

What is it, by the way? That responsibility.

The water in my village, Lugion, is starting to dry up. I was hoping to find a way to stop it by coming to the city... But...

Oh... Yeah, see, you've really got it down, Shallie.

Haha, no way.

Uh, yes way! You came all the way here as a representative for your village. I could never do something like that! I know a bit about Stellard, so don't hestitate to ask if you need help, and I'll do what I can!

Shallie... Thank you! I wonder if it's because we have the same name... I don't think I've talked to anyone like this since I got here.

Hehe, that makes me feel special. How about this...

What?

Together?!

Yeah! Let's help each other accomplish the things we need to do, and the things we want to do, too! It'll help a lot to work with a partner than alone. Way more encouraging. Just a thought.

I haven't been out and about much before now, so I'm a bit rusty on the social front. I was so fast to take up an important task like this one, and yet there's still so much I don't know... But I'd be honored if you're willing to work together with me.

Hehe, don't worry about it, Shallie. We're friends! You can relax a bit.

(Friends... I've never had a friend before... I didn't know how lovely it could be...)

So what are you going to go do next? Can you fix the ship now?

No... We still need a few more materials to reinforce the ship and repair some of the damage. I was just about to go and gather some of them. Do you want to come with me?

Hm, actually... I kinda had some other things I needed to do for my own alchemy, and Miruca... Oh! Do you know my friend Miruca?

She's the girl who runs the Imbuing shop, right?

That's her! Great, you know her. She needed me to help her with business today at the shop, so... Sorry.

No no, that's okay. I'm sure we'll meet again soon.

Yeah! See you, Shallie.

See you later, Shallie. Heheh...

Helping others

You're still awake, Shallie? Don't work yourself too hard...

Yeah, I know. I'll go to sleep soon... You should too, mom.

I'm fine.

Mmm... I dunno... You've been looking a little thin lately. I'm finally starting to get more work, so you should get some rest and relax.

Aww, thank you, Shallie. Well, goodnight then.

Night!

(Hmm, I'm in a really good mood today for some reason. Maybe because my work is so fulfilling? I've never felt like this before. Is it because Shallie was so happy? Or because I made a new friend. No doubt that's part of it! But... Knowing that I'm actually helping someone is what's making me the most happy.)

Oh, and if you watch the video where Stera, Lotte, and Wilbell cross paths, you'll notice (since it's her version) in Lotte's version the camera kinda awkwardly shifts up for a few moments and comes back down. That's because if you're playing Stera, that's the first time you see Wilbell and that's when the game would do her "Pose + name tag" it does for everyone else.

I decided to do it pretty early on, since I thought it would 1) be more coherent, and 2) there would a lot fewer, smaller updates.

Sylphid

Just as a note: next update is done, but not going to be posted for a couple days. Why? Halloween, goon sirs. I've done an update on Halloween for Ayesha and Escha, so it would be wrong to break that trend now. There's not really an Halloween-y things in this game (unlike Wilbell's pumpkin bombs in the previous two games). So Happy Halloween to everyone in the update's stead when I post it.

In the meantime, work will continue on Part X.

Roro posted:

Is there a witchy costume for either of our leads like Escha? That would've been a great callback if there was, especially if they gave it to Lotte.

Sadly not. The only alternate costumes are swimsuits that are from an event much later in the game.

Part IX: The Final Side of the Separate Paths

Shallistera. What do you want to order today?

Something a little strange. I hope it'll be okay...

This is... A weapon for Kortes...

You know Kortes?

Yes. He trained with my sister briefly before I left for Central. I haven't seen him a while, though.

Huh... His weapons are always a little strange...

I made it the way you wanted, but I have no idea how to use it.

It looks like he draws powers of various talismans through the rod he uses to unleash attacks...

...Okay, that was even more confusing.

I don't know much about it either, only that I asked him to tell me about it, and I didn't understand at all.

Well, I made it according to the plans, so it should be fine. Actually, I have another question for you: you practice alchemy, and Kortes uses weapons like this. Is everyone from your village special?

Hm, it's hard for me to answer that, because I was living in my village almost all my life, but I guess we would be a little strange to people from the city.

I look forward to learning more about your village.

Oh, you're accepting it? I'll explain it for you. This request is for a provision of sweets.

Sweets...?

To be specific, a traditional recipe in this town called Stellapearl. It's pretty tasty.

It looks like Solle made the request. Maybe he can't make it himself...?

Well, we've been short on a lot of ingredients lately, and a lot of younger people don't know how to make it.

I see... Now I understand.

Even if you haven't made it before, it shouldn't be that hard to learn. Anyway, I know you can do it. Bring it here once you're done.

Okay, I'll do the best I can!

One more thing: I shouldn't have to tell you after you've seen him, but...

I know... That's why it's important I take my time with this... I'll be sure to deliver something that will impress even him!

No, it doesn't sound like him. I heard something about them having a tail.

The alchemist with the tail is Escha, but that old man? I wonder if he's the same one as the man I met...

Shallie, keep up!

Sorry! Coming!

So what are we looking for?

Ancient Stones and Mixed Oil. Mixed Oil can only be found in small quantities, and Ancient Stones are kinda fragile, so be careful with them...

I guess there aren't any of those around here, but I did find these mushrooms. Do you think you could use these, Shallie?

They're definitely not good for eating, but these are the famous Reaper's Kiss mushrooms... I could use the poisonous taste to them for bombs and stuff like that...

Alright, we'll keep them. (How can she do stuff like that with alchemy...?)

Well, if there aren't any of the things you're looking for around here, we should keep going, Shallie. Hunters like Katla are rarely wrong about these kinds of things.

She's not really a hunter...

I had no idea there was a place lilke this in these ruins. It's really amazing to see the past like this.

What are all these machines?

They don't look like alchemy machines, and it's obviously been abandoned for some time... This place looks like it might be great for finding ancient materials and machine oil like we need. Let's make sure we look carefully.

Looks like Katla was right. Let's gather a lot here.

That should do it. Me and dad could easily repair the ship and get it moving with all this stuff. Nice job, Shallie.

Haha... Really? That's great.

We should come back here later to finish our investigation.

The first big step

Yep, there's no doubt about it, I can definitely repair the ship now. I'm sorry for all the trouble.

And I'm sorry for leaving the ship all up to you.

It's alright. Anyway, I should really start on those repairs. We will finally be able to travel back across the Dusk Sea again.

Yes... Thank you again, Teo. (The ship will finally be fixed... Gosh that took a long time. I hope the village is okay... It's been a long time since we got to Stellard, and we haven't solved anything. But the problems here are related to the problems back home, so I guess we are progressing a bit...)

The chairman is currently busy, please come this way...

These fights are becoming more frequent...

Uh oh, are Raoul and Perriend not getting along?

It's more like... They're disagreeing on the future direction of Stellard, now that--

That's why I said you're a hard-headed old man! We really will be completely taken over by Central at this rate!

Do you have any sort of proof that YOUR methods will ensure the independence of Stellard!?

There's no need for proof or things like that now! We're in a crisis here!

I don't think so! Besides, what exactly is Central "investigating" around here!?

I told you, the progression of the Dusk! You stubborn old man!

They aren't a chairty, do you really believe they would dispatch agents here for such an abstract goal!?

I'm done here, you stubborn old coot! Don't come crying to me when something terrible really does happen! Linca... I'm sorry you had to see that.

It's quite alright. I'm used to you disagreeing with the Chairman, but it has been getting a little...

Yeah, I know. The Union has its interests, the Corporation theirs'... I don't know why we get so heated when we agree on the most important things. Anyway, I'll see you later, when we've both calmed down a little.

...Oh, and Shallie. You've been doing excellent work outside of Stellard. Your skill has really improved. You'll be getting bigger and bigger jobs from now on, so...

Yeah! Leave everything to me!

He's always so hot headed... Some day it'll be trouble.

Um, Mr. Perriend... Why don't you want to cooperate with Central?

Because this city is my life! My family has kept this city running for generations!

Uh... Th-That's true, but...

I apologize... I didn't intend to shout at you. Shallie, Stellard is very important to me. It's my duty to protect it. I understand the danger of the Dusk, but I cannot cooperate with Central without knowing their true plans. ...They could threaten the sovereignty of Stellard... And the lives of the people.

Hm, do you think that could happen here in Stellard?

It's always possible. Central's resources would be considerable, and the population of Stellard would definitely prosper if they were put to use here in Stellard. But the opposite side of that is, how much opportunity for growth would be lost by allowing that? Until I'm sure about that, I can't trust the Union or Central.

...I didn't know... But if you explained it like that to Raoul, wouldn't he understand?

Every time I try to explain it to him, it ends just as you saw! That foolish youngster!

Chairman, just take a deep breath.

Oh, I apologize... That was rather unpleasant of me.

Now then, Shallie, did you have some business with me?

Uh, no... Just was visiting Miruca and asked her to make something for me, and I wanted to stop by while I was waiting for it. See ya!

Yep, for your master.

It looks pretty well made.

Master Wilbell!

I'm a bit worried... I've never made anything like this before.

It's perfect! I'll be able to draw plenty of magic power with this.

Is it really okay not to use your broom? I know you gave it to me, but...

If you really feel that way, give it back!

Whaah! I shouldn't have said that! I'm sorry!

I'm kidding. The broom is just a tool. Different catalysts are used to draw out magic.

Oh... I see. I'm a little disappointed...

I didn't know...

Hmm, I expected Shallie not to know it... But I guess you didn't know it either, MIruca.

Well, magic isn't really my specialty...

Master! What's that supposed to mean?

...That should be obvious.

Hm, that's a pretty good job, but I think I could touch it up a little. Miruca, could you help me?

Hm? Of course. What are you going to do?

Just a little grand magic...

If you don't mind me asking, what is the difference between the ring I made and this one?

Well, the rings I use channel magic in slightly different ways. It's complicated to explain to people who don't study magic, but rings that use more powerful catalysts let me channel stronger magic.

Oh, that's slightly easier to understand than I thought.

Do you see the folds in the metal here? Well--

(Why do I feel like I'm being left out here...?)

Oh, Shallie... Is it okay if I watch you do some alchemy? I have some free time now.

Huh?

If you don't want me to come, you can just say so.

Uwawa! No! Come on over!

Haha... I'll see you two later then.

Hm, hm, hmmmm...

Materials going in, and items taking shape... How does alchemy work, Shallie?

How does it work...? I'm not really sure. It's a process you have to feel, experimenting with how long you stir, how to combine ingredients and applying chemicals and supplements, that kind of stuff.

Hm, interesting. How much have you learned from other people?

I guess recipes and stuff, but alchemy is the kind of thing you can't really learn from a book or by watching others. How about Imbuing?

Hm, it's a lot different, the processes are more structured. The difference really comes down to the quality of the education and the machinery each Imbuer uses. I don't have any of the stuff Central uses, so it's a little harder here than back in Central. Even so...

Even so what?

Um, never mind. Do you want to do some requests for the Union?

I've got some good news. Your hard work is earning you quite the reputation. I'm really proud of you.

Really? That's good...

In response to that, I'll start giving you some of the more important jobs we've got. This is work given only to people most trusted by the Union. The rewards are also huge. I'm counting on you!

Is it really okay to give something so important to me...? I'm getting nervous, but I'll do my best...!

Of course, continuing to fulfill requests from the townspeople will help grow your reputation, and you'll have more support going forward. I heard about the ship. You must be pretty excited, huh?

Hm...I'm not sure I'm excited, just really happy... It seems like I've been moving so slowly since I got here, and the village can't wait for me.

I know how you feel, but you've made excellent progress here. Once you get your ship up and running, I'm sure you'll be able to travel even further from Stellard.

I just hope I can help my village after all this time.

I always hunt at a certain spot. I found something nice the other day and made some good money.

Um, may I ask what you're talking about?

Oh, well, we're talking about mining for relics out in the field.

Mining?

Yeah, if you dig out there, you can find a lot of relics.

There're times you don't find anything, either, but it's great when you do.

(Mining... Could I find things for alchemy? I should look into it.) Um...what kind of tools should I use?

Any kind of digging tool would be fine, but you should probably avoid anything too heavy. You want to be able to carry everything you find back here, right?

Y-Yes, thank you. (I should ask Teo about it.)

Yes, I want to try it.

Wait a minute, miss. I think I have something...

...

Yes, I found it!

I used to dig around a lot when I was younger. I didn't know it would be useful again.

Thank you, Teo!

I wouldn't try digging very deep with this. It's not really designed for digging, but searching for things just under the soil should be fine.

I'll keep that in mind, thanks.

We've got materials to find and monsters to defeat! Let's get to work!

Let's keep going. The materials have to be around here somewhere!

Um, Shallie...

Ugh, not here either!

Shallie, the monsters aren't here. We need to look in the regions around Stellard.

Oh, heh... Sorry.

Well, we came all this way, so we might as well finish our investigation here.

There are some pretty good machines here, well, they used to be nice. Still...

It's kinda sad-looking...

An ice cold bomb... I wonder if that's better than fire bombs. Guess I'll find out when I use it on adventures. That about does it... I wonder if I'm growing a bit... (I know I learned alchemy when I was young because I'm the chief's daughter... But I feel like Im getting better now compared to when I was just being forced to learn. Personal feelings must play a big part in this... I still don't know how to save the village, but... It's strange, I don't feel too worried about it. More importantly, I feel much stronger about training more and becoming more useful.)

So you only accepted a trash-cleaning job before coming out?

I said I was sorry... Well, let's finish this up. It is pretty dirty around here.

Hey Shallie, do you...want to get some lunch with me when we get back?

I'd love to! You never ask me for things like that. Are you okay, Miruca?

I'm fine.

...I start to feel sick if I'm in the sun too long...

What... Are you a ghost or something, MIruca...?

...Can I go home?

C'mon now! The weather is so nice! Here, these rabbit sandwiches are really good.

...

By the way... When you were going to school in Central, did you pack lunches? Was it hard doing that every morning?

... Why are you interested in my time in Central?

Well, it's just... I've only lived in Stellard, and I've heard people from Central talk about how amazing it was. I was just curious...

Hm, well... The school had a dining hall, I ate there.

That sounds pricey... What was on the menu?

All kinds of things... But I prefer the food in Stellard.

Whaaat? I'd want to try it at least once. I'm sure it's good...

Not really. It was just too expensive, and the place was loud... Nothing tasted good eating in a place like that. ...The sandwiches you made are a lot better.

My Halloween horror story? Losing my hard drive and the connecting USB cord. The only good side of it is the fact I moved the most recent video I recorded (Sunday morning), and put it on my computer, hoping to work on IX and X while watching football. Evidently, I completely forgot about it, and the maid was here on Monday, and she probably threw it out. I can't find it anywhere it would normally be.

Even so, it's remarkably cheap to replace those two items. 40 odd bucks for a 2.5" 500 GB hard drive and a connecting cable. I thought it would be like 70 at the least. Thank goodness for the proliferation of technology, eh? X is already coming along nicely, but I still have yet to finish the script or take the screenshots.

Part X: The Resolute Side of the Desperate Battle

Uproar on the docks

Heyyy, it's Shallie! You came to see, too?

Master! What's this about?

A Sand Dragon appeared near the city again.

Crisis point

Miss...! This is bad!

Teo! Kortes? What happened?

Another Sand Dragon has appeared!

And this time, it was seen near the city.

What?? So Sand Dragons really ARE violent?

No, that's what's strange. Sand Dragons are normally calm and quiet. Could the ship that crashed into the harbor have something to do with it?

Ship...? Oh, hey!

A Sand Dragon...

It would be awful if our freshly repaired ship was damaged again...

It's still strange... Sand Dragons are supposed to be pretty docile unless they are provoked...

What could-

Shallie! Heeey!

What? Another one?!

Do you know her, miss?

Yes, her name is Shallotte. We share a nickname!

Hmm...

I'll go down to meet her. Excuse me...

Yeah, a Sand Dragon is nearby...

Sounds like it... Is your ship alright?

Yes it is, and thanks to the materials you brought, the repairs are going well!

Oh good!

In fact, we should be just about ready to sail, if Teo is right... But I've been hearing whispers that our ship is the reason why the Sand Dragon is acting this way...

What! There's no way!

(What happened on the way here to Stellard... That was a Sand Dragon, too.) Mmmm... Do you... Trust us?

Of course.

...Thank you so much.

A dangerous idea

We don't have a choice, we don't even know the cause behind the dragon appearing. It doesn't matter if it was spotted nearby, it hasn't DONE anything yet.

Well, I have reports of several ships out at sea that have already been sunk by it.

None of the reports confirm the Sand Dragon is the cause, though. Without evidence, it's just a rumor.

drat...

Research shows up that the dragon usually sleeps in the sand...

And?

Even if we cant' prove that it's caused damage, seeing its activity is more than enough. Coming up with some countermeasures wouldn't be out of place...

I'm glad you understand, Solle.

Absolutely not. Countermeasures would only cause people to panic. The last thing we want is a population of insecure people. Why don't you understand?

Because if we waited for something to happen, then it would be too late to do anything. Besides, have you seen the state of the town the past few days? People are already starting to panic. You can't stop the spread of rumors at this point.

Really? Because at this point, they're just rumors. If we were to act, we would confirm everyone's suspicions and cause a real panic. I'm not willing to risk so much for something we're not even sure of.

This is going nowhere. Look, this is the Union's view. The Sand Dragon has already done damage to the town... We should get a team together to take it down.

That sounds more forceful than necessary... But if it means a clear sea near Stellard, it might be for the best.

That's why we plan on killing it before that happens.

... Look, listen to me.

Yes?

None of the city's ships can confirm the Sand Dragon's caused any harm... But, there IS a ship that has already been harmed.

What ship?

The outsider's ship, actually. They were attacked by the dragon before they fled into our harbor.

What are you saying?

The rumors of a rogue Sand Dragon started right about the time they arrived in the harbor... By which I mean, the ship may definitely have something to do with the dragon's activity.

This sounds like it could use an investigation, but I can't deny the possibility.

What're you gonna do if there's a connection?

But if they failed, a significant amount of its already low fighting capacity will be depleted. If fighting the Sand Dragon is our only option, we should send that ship to the front line to ensure our success.

...You want to use them as bait?!

Think of it however you like, but that is the condition of my cooperation. Of course, I'm aware that ship can't defeat the Sand Dragon on its own. If you agree with my offer here, I can guarantee the support of what ships the Corporation has. Otherwise, I'm well aware the Union does not have the manpower to confront the Sand Dragon on its own. The people going out there all have families here... I only have the greatest respect for those leaving their families behind to brave the Dusk Sea. That's why they need some reassurance to go out to face the unknown. Sacrificing the people of the city to protect it wouldn't solve anything.

... Well, Solle, Escha, what do you think?

It's not a bad idea, but the biggest question is if Shallistera will agree. We should consider how we might act without her assistance, but I will admit, the odds are not great without her.

I'm sure when Shallie hears about what's at stake here, she'll agree. Of course, I'll do whatever I can to help, too!

What's your decision?

Everything depends on what Shallistera has to say about this, but speaking for the Union, that's acceptable to me.

Well then...

What's your plan?

What do you think is the right thing to do?

There's no correct. answer. "Right" depends on what your personal views are, and where you stand...

Haha, you're a cold one. Though, you're not completely wrong about that... I want Stellard to be a town where everyone can live in peace. That was the decision that was made.

An important decision

It was easy with all the correct materials.

Oh! Good work, Teo! This means...

The repairs are complete! We can sail again, just like new.

Thank you, you did an excellent job.

The only problem is that Sand Dragon. I don't want to take the ship out and have it get damaged again...

Hm, yeah, you're right...

Well you seem pretty chipper today.

Oh, Raoul! Look, the ship is reparied thanks to your materials!

That's great. The other Shallie will definitely be happy.

Hehe! I hope so.

So, Shallistera, I was wondering if you had some time to discuss something important...

Me...?

Well...do you make decisions for this ship?

Raoul, this definitely doesn't sound good. What do you think, Shallie?

Um...

This is your journey, Miss Shallistera. I see myself just as your support while you're here. See what he has to say.

Okay, thank you Teo.

... I still don't like this, dad. Why don't we listen in a little?

...Very well.

Where do I start...? Well, you've heard the rumors about the Sand Dragon, right?

Yes, earlier today, but...

The Union was discussing how to address the problem fo the Sand Dragon, and we decided to use your ship as an important part of the operation to stop the it. Your ship is the strongest ship in Stellard, and well... There's no easy way to say this, but the combination of your adventuring and alchemic talent, along with your ship, is our best possibility. That's why we need you to lend us your strength, to kill the Sand Dragon. I feel bad asking someone who's come such a far way to help, but our offensive forces just aren't enough.

I understand. It's thanks to the people of Stellard that our ship is fixed. So...

I'm so sorry, but we can't reply right away.

Kortes?! And Teo!

It's rude to eavesdrop, by the way.

Still not as bad as you.

Uh, Kortes...

You're going to stay and help with the Sand Dragon that's causing trouble. That's not that weird. I know about the problem Stellard has... But it IS Stellard's problem... It's not ours to help.

If our ship was destroyed, or we got hurt fighting the dragon... Would Stellard save the village in our stead? Our village gets worse and worse every day... We can't put it off any longer.

This and that are two different issues. Besides, what do you think Stellard can do for Lugion?

I don't know yet, but you promised Shallie that you would devote Stellard's resources to helping our village if we helped Stellard with your problems.

I can only promise the Union's resources. But you came to Stellard with the hope of solving the crisis in your village. At this point, the problems of your village and Stellard are one in the same. Stopping the Sand Dragon is in your best interest as well.

Everyone! Please...Raoul, is the dragon posing a threat to Stellard now?

No, not right now, as far as we can tell.

Okay, then, I'll ask everyone I can think of to get an opinion. I don't want to do something I'll regret, for myself and the village's sake.

I think I know what you mean. I understand... Give me your answer after you've had some time to think about it.

Raoul... I'm sorry I can't give you an answer earlier.

It's quite alright. You should be happy you have such good friends... Pardon the intrusion.

That was easier than I thought it would be...

Huh?

He... He was intending on using our ship as a shield. That way, even if they failed to kill it, the city itself wouldn't have taken much damage.

No way.... Raoul isn't like that!

I agree...

Kortes?

Yeah, Raoul is young, but decisive. He seems like a good leader. He didn't seem like he'd decided on this issue, though...

He's hesitating. He might not have thought of this idea in the first place. The only other group that would consider a plan like this would probably be the Corporation. No wonder Raoul didn't seem very enthusiastic about it.

You seem like you've gained a lot of insight, Kortes. The way he hesitated and went around in circles... He knew he was making a crummy proposition.

He doesn't seem like one to lie so easily with a straight face...

Well... I still think he can do it. At least he can make a decision based on the things that are important to him.

...The important things... Teo, Kortes, our job is to save Lugion from its crisis. But to do that, we need to be accepted by Stellard...

A delicate situation, indeed...

Shallie...?

I want to hear what people have to say, and make a choice based on that.

But...

Should we consider this an order from the daughter of the chief? Er, the representative?

Yes. I want to do this, as the representative.

Very well, then. May a thousand voices and ten thousand thoughts guide you, miss. Regardless of your answer, we will be your strength.

Yes, we're here for you.

Thank you, Teo, Kortes... (Hm, where should I start...?)

No regrets

Yes, for the dragon... It's quite scary...

No kidding... How do you even kill a dragon?

I don't know... Hitting it definitely won't do enough...

Yeah... It seems impossible...

...What?

Just thinking... I don't know if it's okay to keep relying on others to protect the town... But as it is, I'd probably just end up in the way.

Do you wanna go, Shallie?

I don't know... But I don't want to do nothing, either...

I see... I don't want you to do anything dangerous, Shallie. Your feelings are the most important thing. If you make a decision, I won't stop you.

Mom...

You should talk to as many people as you can, and think about it thoroughly before you decide... ...About what you want to do, and who you want to be... Don't have any regrets.

...Okay. Thanks, mom.

Shallotte's choice

You could make strong weapons and armor with alchemy... But I doubt it would be enough. Raoul, my sister... Everyone's being reckless. It isn't a decision to be taken lightly.

You're level-headed, as usual.

I know my limits, and the stuff I learned in Central isn't of much use. This might be none of my business... But Stellard is finally trying to unite... I want to help with that, at least. Even Gerard came here to buy weapons and armor.

Wait, Perriend did?! I wouldn't've expected that... I never thought I'd hear something like that from you, Miruca...! Not bad.

Yeah... So have you made a decision about the dragon?

Not yet. I was thinking of asking more people about what I should do.

I see. It's not a decision to make lightly, after all.

Miruca... If I do decide to help fight the dragon, would you want to come with me?

...Of course. I'm sure Wilbell wouldn't want anything to happen to you either.

Thanks Miruca... What do you think I should do?

While it's probably true my skills with Imbuing couldn't defeat the dragon by itself, with the combination of your alchemy, I think we might have a chance. And it's true the people of Stellard will never feel safe as long as the Sand Dragon is outside the city... I think you should.

Shallistera's choice

I'll definitely be on that hunting team, of course... That dragon has been acting up lately.

Is it really because our ship provoked it?

I don't know. But I want to protect this town, for Miruca, somewhere where she feels happy.

Where she feels happy... That's what this is about. Thanks Jurie.

In my opinion, it should be left alone. Investigations tell us that the dragon is quite docile when left alone. Provoking it by attempting to fight it will only make things worse. But, the people over at the Union seem blindly intent on killing it. In that case, the ship that initially provoked the dragon should be sent out as well.

Are you trying to blame this on Shallie's ship? There's no proof!

The initial cause doesn't matter now. But if it came down to a battle, nobody would escape unhurt. And if people from Stellard were injured in the fighting, who do you think they would get angry at?

Shallie? Because they're outsiders...?

I believe that's correct, yes. That ship has plenty of fighting capabilities, but I wonder how people would view it if it were to hang back? But if it was used to fight for Stellard, what would people think? Therefore, it's my decision to include that ship in the battle. I don't care if you think I'm cold-hearted. It's for the good of the city. Do you know what Shallie's feelings are toward this?

Um...last time I talked to her, she seemed unsure what she should do. It sounded like she was going to make the decision based on what she heard from people in town.

If that's the case, then I wouldn't worry about what her decision will be. Even so, you might want to talk to her about this. Just a suggestion. Now then, if you'll excuse me...

The chairman has no higher priority than the town. He wants to minimize threats that appear, just like the Union. Though, to tell the truth, the whole Sand Dragon incident is beyond expectations. There is an unknown cause somewhere, at least, that's what the chairman thinks. The decision to include that ship in the subjugation team was a difficult one for him. I ask for you consideration, as well.

(That's a good point... What has Shallie decided?)

That Sand Dragon is definitely not happy. At this rate, no one will be able to fall asleep again. Observations have showed us the Sand Dragon being sighted numerous times, necessitating countermeasures.

Yeah, but who's going to join the hunting team? It's so dangerous...

The decision to use the outsider's ship is a good choice. It's mobile and sturdy. I reparied it myself with materials I gathered, so, I should know.

So you're suggesting our ship be used as a shield?!

I wasn't that excited about it, if that makes any difference. I feel bad having to borrow their ship... They need to help their own village, after all. The people are just too worried about that dragon... It needs to be dealt with. They believe the flow of goods will stop, and some have started buying up food and other supplies. If this keeps up, the lower class is going to have food issues...

I had no idea that was happening...

That's understandable. It's not something anyone in the Union or Corporation wants to talk about, but I'll be honest, it's not looking good.

It would be nice if there were a better solution...

We've already been trying, Escha. Don't worry about it.

Okay. I guess I should've expected that from you, Solle.

Anyway, that's what's going on. Everyone just needs to think positive and keep their spirits up. Anyway, I'm not trying to push anything onto you, but it would be a big help to the city if you could make a decision soon. Sorry, there's just no easy way to say that...

I know, it's important for everyone... There's just one more person I want to ask, though...

This area. Should be. Protector god. Sand Dragon.

Homura! Then why is it...

Dusk. Probably. Dusk Sea spreads. Keeps spreading. Water dries up. All. Must be. Retaliation. Still exciting. For me.

See? Even Homura is excited to fight the dragon!

Escha!

Shallie...are you scared over having to fight the dragon if you agree?

I guess you can see that... Yes, I am, but I'm more concerned for my village and the safety of Teo and Kortes.

If it's any help, Shallie, I know exactly how you feel. When I went to the Unexplored Ruins...

...

Alchemy can incredibly rewarding, but incredibly dangerous, too. There's so much we can change in this world, for good or bad. I've seen both sides of that, and well... I'm not sure if I'm saying this right, but I think you can make a difference here, Shallie. Of course, I'll be here to support you no matter what you decide, but...I think this your chance to prove to yourself alchemy is something that can help people.

Escha...

Their choice

Shallie...! What a coincidence, meeting in a place like this.

It is, but, things are getting quite serious around here...

Yeah, you're right.

Also, thanks to you, the ship is all fixed up! Thank you so much!

No problem...

Raoul was saying how our ship is able to fight. He was asking us to fight for the sake of Stellard.

Shallie, if you don't want to do it, you should say something.

What are you going to do?

I want to protect the town, even though I might not be of much use... There must be something I can do.

This city seems really important to you.

Yeah, well. My mom, Miruca, Al, Jurie. So many people I really care about are here. That includes you and me. I've lived here for so long! I Mean, sure, I don't like how there's always trash around no matter how much I pick up... But I still love it here. And I don't want a Sand Dragon to destroy that.

I see... I talked to a lot of people... Everyone is working hard in their own way. They work for the sake of the city, their families... They're serious about protecting the things important to them.

Shallie...

That's how I can understand how important Stellard is to you, and the people of this city. Even as an outsider, the poeple here have shown me so much kindness. I won't forget that.

And that's why I've decided...

Decided...?

Please, let me fight by your side!

Shallie... ...Raoul and the others mean to use you as a shield... So...

I know.

What!?

Still... I will fight for this city as a representative of Lugion Village. I love this city, too.

...No regrets?

Well...I guess that settles it. What do you say we have a big meeting together? I'll go get Miruca and Master.

That's a great idea! From now on, we'll work together!

Yeah, for Stellard!

I'm sorry Kortes, but this is where my decision stands.

I'm so sorry! Please, let us borrow the ship... And Shallie!

You... Didn't get talked into it by Shal, did you?

No. I just want to do whatever I can.

That's good! I'll help.

I won't let anything happen to you, Miruca.

Jurie, stop...!

We make campfire. Exciting adventure. Start now!

Oh Homhom, you never change... This is gonna be a serious fight.

Though we do have Solle and Escha. There should be a fairly good chance at winning.

You might be right...

Yeah. We have a lot of capable, strong people, now we just need the spirit to win it!

If that's your decision, then I will do everything I can to protect you, no questions asked.

Kortes...

And this ship won't go down easily. Even a Sand Dragon is a breeze.

Haha! Not bad, grandpa!

Shal... You really shouldn't be laughing.

Yup, we got this!

...I'm worried...

Uh, Shallie...? If we win this, do you think Stellard will accept us?

Of course. You're already our friend, Shallie!

Awww... Thank you...!

Alright then Shallie, let's go!

Uh...

Oh right, two Shallies... I think we're going to need to come up with nicknames...

Well, I can just call Shallotte "Shal", but...

Yeah, I guess that would be Miruca's nickname.

Shallistera, do you have any ideas for a nickname?

But I already have one...

So Shallistera is going to be "Shallie" and Shallotte is "Shal"?

I guess...

When we. Sail. We need. To. Decide.

I agree, Homhom!

It's good they're already getting along, but...

Yeah. We need to stay focused.

Miss, Shallie, I think you should let the Union know of your decision.

Yeah, we have to let Raoul know!

For Stellard, and for my village!

Hunting the dragon

Music: Those Who Challenge the Twilight

Yes. We'll fight for the sake of this city with our ship!

I see... And your companions support you?

The decision was mine, as the representative of Lugion Village. There's nothing to worry about.

...It might be frustrating to hear me say this after my request, but, I can't guarantee your safety. Are you still okay with that?

The same goes for people in the hunting team.

We'll be fine. I'll be with her!

What are you talking about? Why are YOU going?!

I don't want to be left out... I want to protect the city with everyone else!

Granted, but, we don't need anyone getting in the way...

It's okay with me.

But she's just a kid! There's no reason to send her with the subjugation team...

Everyone was a kid, once. We are no different.

It's too reckless!

The other Shallie is young, too, and yet she is lending us her strength as a representative of her village. I'm sure she thought through her decision very carefully.

I didn't just decide this on my own, I thought about it a lot, and talked to a ton of people!

Ability and victory... Those are all that matter.

You sound pretty sure of yourself.

It's not like I haven't been doing anything. I'm supporting her because she has a drat good chance.

But still...

Ah, Raoul?

What?

If Solle thinks it's alright, isn't that enough?

...Hahh... Fine. Just... Don't get hurt, okay?

Yes!

I shouldn't have to remind you two, but make sure you're extra prepared for this hunt. We're only going to get one real shot at this.

Is it really going to be that hard to hunt it?

We've already discussed how to proceed with the Perriend. The Corporation will contribute what ships they have to drawing the Sand Dragon out. If one ship can draw so much attention from the dragon, a fleet of them will surely draw him out. Then, after the dragon has been lured out, your ship will be right there to meet it. From there, we'll support you as best we can, but the main part of the fight is up to you.

Of course, that's the hard part. Your safety, for many reasons, is more important. If you think your ship is any danger of sinking, pull back. We can always come up with another plan.

Our regular ships don't have the firepower to take on the dragon directly. That's where your alchemy comes in. You'll need a lot of bombs to defeat the dragon. That's also of course, not taking the dragon's ferocity into account. Don't ever underestimate what it can do.

So prepare well, and ensure our safety if things go badly?

Sounds like a plan! Let's get ready!

Of course, if we lose a lot of ships on the Dusk Sea, we may not get a second chance.

... I know. That's why we have to have faith they'll do it right the first time.

They understand the stakes. We have to do everything we can to support them now.

So Shallie, what should do first?

Well, maybe we should see if there are some new recipe books for sale in town. We'll definitely need some powerful bombs to defeat a Sand Dragon.

That's a great idea...

I think Rose might have some new stuff. I don't think Katla will have many new books.

Yes! I knew it! Let's read this together Shallie! Is it...okay if we do alchemy together now?

Sure! I was hoping to ask you... Do you want to do it in the ship or your house?

My mom would probably talk to us too much, and your ship looks really interesting... Let's do it there!

What do you think about the Lava Cube? Do you that could help against the dragon?

Well I can't say I've ever fought a Sand Dragon before, but every little bit should help. All of these other materials look really combustible, so they should be valuable ingredients in the synthesis. Let's try making those first.

Alright, let's get to work!

What kind of bomb is that? Looks...dangerous.

Have you ever used Crafts before?

Sure, they're a big help against weaker monsters...Oh, I see! It's just a bigger, more dangerous, Craft.

That's what the recipe seems to call for. Let's start working on healing supplies.

Hm, we should probably work on getting some new equipment, too. I'll be back soon!

The essence of Slags... Maybe something like this could help me understand them better. Giving life to inanimate objects... I wonder where they came from?

Shallie, Miruca needed some high-quality ingots... Oh! You made some!

Holinicait is a pretty malleable ingot. I guess Miruca wants to make some great new equipment with that.

Yeah! I'll get it made right away!

I'm baaaaack! What are you doing, Shallie?

I'm making a Lava Cube. I was thinking of trying something new for this synthesis. Do you know about chains in alchemy?

I've heard of them in my recipe books, but it looked a little challenging, so I haven't tried them yet.

Well, by combining the same element multiple times in a row, we can increase the property values and make stronger materials. It may be easier to show you...

And the more elements that are added, the greater effect the materials will have, beyond what they normally add to a synthesis.

Hm, but we'll probably need better materials to really use that more often. I don't have much different ingredients in my Container.

Well, it's probably no use worrying about it now. We have to get moving soon.

Well Shallie, are you ready to go?

I'm so nervous, but...yes, I am.

Okay, I'll go get Master and Miruca! Let's do this!

Setting sail

Wow, there're so many ships! And people!

Everyone wants to protect the city!

You're right... So many people love Stellard... We need to protect it too!

Once we get out to open ocean, they'll give chase to the Sand Dragon. While they have it distracted, you have to get as close as you can to the dragon.

Okay!

Shallie, I felt so helpless up until this moment... Now, I feel like I can do anything. I'm sure it's because of you. And everyone.

I feel like I've grown so much! I've never felt so in tune with other people before. Let's give it our best shot!

Yes!

Next real update is gonna be big.

1) Big battle against the Sand Dragon. First real boss battle of the game.

2) Not one, but TWO new party members. You can thank me later for spending my money on the both of them.

3) The biggest change, I have a new recording setup! I lost the hard drive and USB connector to my previous hard drive, and it has disappeared to lands unknown. Last week I decided to replace things from the ground up. New recording device (the Elgato GameCapture HD), new hard drive, and new USB connector. What's new about it? Pseudo-1080p recordings! It's still technically recording at 720, but it looks so much better (and my old device recorded at 720). There's a lot more color, for one thing. One thing I kinda didn't like about my old hardware was the colors tended to be pretty dull, which does not suit a colorful series like Atelier, not at all.

Still, AverMedia GameCapture HD, you done good. I've been using that since before the Arland thread got posted, and it has recorded hundreds of hours of anime RPGs and stabby games. Here's to you (2012-2015). You traveled to three countries and served me well. I could still use you, but your age is done.

Music:

Sandy Sea -Cave-
Sometimes you want to change the tempo a little to fit different instruments, but you can't! It's hard to find a fitting composition and style for these arrangements. (Achiwa)

Sandy Sea -Trading Post-
This completes this group of compositions. I look forward to seeing just what kind of impression they make in the finished game! (Achiwa)

Flame
This character theme aims to depict the mismatch between Homura's small, cute stature, and his attempts to seem big. (Achiwa)

Attractive Beach Queen
I wanted to make at least 1 novelty track for comical situations... And got this. It's supposed to be ska plus The Ventures... But I think fans of both will want to beat me up for saying that. (Achiwa)

Those Who Challenge the Twilight
This was used along with Asano's track in a preview video. Yet another arrangement of the opening. I didn't want to hold anything back, considering I was borrowing someone else's melody. (Yanagawa)

The first preview video, actually. This track, along with another song to be heard later in the game, was used in that video. This is one of my favorites on the OST, but it only plays over that one scene where Lotte and Stera go to the Union about the dragon.

Bonus Bonus

As promised, artistic exerpts from the Atelier: Dusk series artbooks. All of them are really high-quality and colorful, and I'm glad I bought them.

Atelier Ayesha artbook 1

Atelier Ayesha artbook 2

Atelier Ayesha artbook 3

Atelier Ayesha artbook 4

The most interesting bits from the book. Also, in the meantime between now and the next update, take a look at number 2. What would be your favorite alternate character designs from Ayesha for the main cast?

Ayesha: since she has so many, I'll choose 3. On the second row, I'd be cool with the third one from the left, and on page 83, first Ayesha from the left on the first row who looks like Nio. Final Ayesha would be the first Ayesha on the next row down.

Wilbell: hood instead of a hat might be interesting, but the small green-haired Wilbell I'd actually prefer over the final product. Call me a weirdo.

Regina: if I had to choose (and it's my challenge), blonde Regina would be alright.

Linca: just like Ayesha, she has a ton of concept arts, and I'll choose 3. Green-clothed Linca with the green hat would be awesome, but I'm also partial to the Linca second from the right in the second row. Next row, I guess number 6. Maid Linca I'm sure was just Hidari spitballing.

Juris: not a whole lot of variation, but I'll roll with Wild Man Juris, first from the left in the second row.

Keith: lot of strange stuff here, but let's see. I'll pick two alternates. I'll choose Cape Keith (third from the right in the second row). But I'll cheat a bit and look at alternate colors of his final outfit. G would be my favorite among that group. Also check out Internet Dude Keith at the bottom there with the fedora and scarf.

Nio: I really like Nio's final outfit, and I'm not real partial on any of the rough designs, but I guess I'd go with first from the right in the second row.

Marion: getting into the DLC characters now. Marion's final design I like a lot more than any of the concepts, but gun to my head, I'd go with A in the first row.

Odelia: first Odelia design on that page by a mile. Also bonus look at what a male Odelia would look like.

Harry: said I'd only go with the playable cast, but I'd be a drat fool not to point out Ben Franklin Harry at his section.

There is a lot of neat stuff that's hidden under Japanese that'd I'd just love to translate before I submit the archive request, including artist commentary over the event CGs. Another example would be Nio's Diary at the end of the book. I assume it's complete fluff, but it would be neat to see what manner of fluff it is.

Part XI: The Decisive Side of the Great Confrontation

Music: Stop the Sand Dragon

This is as close as we can get the ship. Dad is going to take the ship around these rocks, but we have to be ready to meet him.

Uh.... I thought we were going to fight the dragon on the ship?

Right, but the Corporation's ships are going to be going around the rocks to draw the dragon toward us. Once the dragon is in position, that's when we attack.

So why aren't we going on the ship?

Teo is the only person who needs to be on the ship. In case things go badly, we need to know how to retreat from the dragon.

Oh. That makes more sense, and there might be some nice materials around here, but we can't get more supplies unless we return to Stellard.

Right. Let's not exhaust ourselves fighting these monsters.

Hey Shallie, what are you doing there?

Oh... I saw some hunters talking about digging valuable things out of the ground, so I thought I might give it a try.

Valuable things, huh...?

Music: Stella -2-

Music: Sweep -2-

Let's work together and crush these monsters!

How's that!?

(Ship ruins? Maybe...)

I can feel the Sand Dragon around here...

Let's be careful everyone!

The Sand Dragon should be just ahead...

Alright everyone, the plan is set! No turning back!

Hurricane

Alright! Let's get going!

Music: Flying Clouds, Drifting Haze

Uwawa... It's so big!

Don't worry, we can do this!

Dad! Is the ship going to be okay!?

It'll be fine! Focus on the dragon!

Water hurts it a lot! We have to break its defenses and hit it hard!

I'll support everyone with my pilebunker. Focus your attacks and defeat the dragon!

Ugh, what is it doing!? Hold on!

The ship will hold, but this is gonna hurt! Everyone, hang on to something!

Shallie! Jurie!

Don't worry, it's going to be fine.

That was embarrassing...

Looks like it dug itself into the rocks so long so many have attached to its back. It's amazing this ship can take so much.

Sorry, I need a break.

I've got this. Here I come!

I didn't know it could be this tough... Ugh, we're going to need to defeat this thing soon.

I told you, I won't let you get hurt.

I know it's hard, everyone, but let's just keep it up! It looks weak!

That's it! Kortes, finish it!

I'm on it!

Alright!

We did it!

I can't believe it...

We...

Defeated a dragon...

Yeah!! We did it!

We really won...?

Is it really over?

Whoa. Like legendary heroes. This power.

Miss! We are victorious!

Yes! Thank you, Teo.

That was easier than I thought it would be. I wonder if Solle and Escha have something to do with it...

We should ask them later.

Yeah, I suppose. Everyone seems pretty happy at the moment.

Now then, miss, shall we head back to Stellard?

Yeah... Wow, I'm still kind of amazed we did it. How about Stellard's ships?

The Sand Dragon was lured out, just as we planned, and all of Stellard's ships got away safely. Many of them will probably make it back before we do.

Thank goodness...

Victory lap

Hey! You did it, you guys!

Hehe, you saw?

Gimme a break, I can't see that far from the harbor. One of the Corporation's smaller ships saw the battle and got back before you did. The captain headed straight to the Union and Corporation to spread the news.

Ohhh...I was kinda hoping to tell you myself.

Heh. Oh, Shallistera.

The Sand Dragon has been slain, and Stellard should be safe again.

Yes! We're so grateful! I promise that from now on, the Union will do everything it can to help Lugion Village.

Thank you so much!

This is still just the beginning.

But, we're making progress. There's no need to worry.

Kortes and Teokhuga, right? Thank you, for today. You have my gratitude. Hey, how's the ship holding up? Looks fine to me.

That Sand Dragon couldn't break this ship if it wanted to. The ship has almost never been better, but it did take a few hits when the dragon threw a big chunk of stone into the side.

Jeez! But, it still looks great.

Of course. Lugion Village is famous for its shipbuilders. We can build a ship better than anyone.

Heh, that's for sure. Well then, I think a big party is in order for tonight. Everyone's invited! This is a new day for Stellard!

Sir, we've confirmed the death of the Sand Dragon. The fleet should be arriving back in Stellard soon.

Hmm... Any losses?

None.

Seems I underestimated Shallie. So we succeeded in defending Stellard..

Yes.

I'm sure Raoul is going to bring this up for a while. Still, there's no arguing with results like this. It may even be time to think about *that*.

...

Music: Miru iro no Hoshi

Admit it Miruca, you were scared.

Jurie...

Hey, why do you have to say that to her? I know Miruca better than you do, and trust me, she wasn't scared.

Hey, there's no shame in admitting it. It was scary, even though I knew we could do it.

I wasn't scared. I'm just tired from the adventure. Maybe I'm not...

You've got what it takes to be a great hunter like me, maybe even better with your knowledge of Imbuing.

Hm...

(At least the Union will be fine with people like this working for it.)

Hey Solle, why don't you share some of those with us?

No. These are sweets only I enjoy, and you'd have to ask the Homunculi. They made them.

... They do look good...

So then I was like "Logy!" but he mixed it in anyway. The explosion made a huge mess all over the atelier, and it took us days to clean it. Mr. Grumman was so upset... I'm so glad I could get away for a little and stay at my house in the orchard.

That Logy... You know, after traveling with me, you would think he would appreciate magic more.

Oh, he always said he never trusted anything he couldn't test or experiment with. You know him...

Yeah, I know that kind of guy. But after seeing things like this...

You'd think even a guy like Logy could understand!

Ah! How do you do that?

Hehe, the secrets of a great witch.

And. Like that. I defeated. Dragon!

Shiny...

Well yeah, I mean, now that the Sand Dragon is defeated, the Union has some big expansion plans.

Are you thinking of sending members to the ruins to the east? Not many people have been there.

I still have to discuss it with a few people, but there's a definite chance.

And how about the new members of the Union? I've seen their ship before, but the owner wasn't there.

Her name is Shallistera. Seems she goes out a lot on adventures.

Someone that young, coming all this way... She's pretty amazing.

Amazing, huh? Yeah, I can see that.

Yes, the young miss is an inspiration to the entire village. Neither of you probably realize how many people are counting her. She's assuming an incredible task, and she's performed it well.

She is impressive, but don't you think you and Kortes should do more for her? She's already got so much on her plate, hardly seems fair to make her do all that.

Believe me, we put too much pressure on her, but neither I or Kortes can do alchemy at all. She's the only one with great talent for it in our clan.

Just like Colseit, huh Escha?

Well, not exactly, but it's pretty close.

Um...can I have one?

No. I need all of these for energy. You're still young, so you should have plenty of energy.

Not enough to deal with Shal every day.

Hm. Good point. Very well, you may have a couple.

Oh, Homura. What brings you here?

Sharing. Sweets. Important. Part of. Friendship.

I suppose so...

Why do you think Solle gets along with the homunculi so much?

Well, you may not know it, but Solle is an incredible maker of sweets. Some of his treats are just delicious, and I guess the Homhoms can just look past his scary face. Come on! Maybe we can get some his sweets, too.

Everyone looks so happy!

Stellard really came together today. It's unusual to see a night with such joyous celebration.

Yeah... I'm so happy...!

It was all thanks to you, Shallie. Even Raoul mentioned it.

No, it's thanks to everyone on the hunting team, and those who were helping us.

I still can't believe how amazing it is... You came from so far away, yet you helped fight a dragon when people asked. That's not a common trait...

I guess not. But I wouldn't have any regrets, even if I failed.

Why?

Well, I've spent a lot of time up until now following along. Because I'm the chief's daughter, because I can use alchemy, and be the next chief... Everything I needed to do was already planned out for me, and I never knew any better. That dragon fight was the first thing I decided to do on my own. I made my own choice, and it went well. What a relief!

I see... (So she's the complete opposite of me, huh...) So what are you going to do now?

We still haven't found anything to help with the drought in the village... I'll keep looking around for a fix. Because of today, it seems like Raoul is going to start helping... And we can all move forward!

Yeah! I'll help too! Let's save Lugion Village together!

Oh! Thank you, so much.

So ah, what do you want to do once you've saved the village?

Huh?

A side effect of spending so much time with Kortes is that I've developed a love for travel.

That sounds great!

But...

...Eh?

Today also showed me it can be hard to get people to accept someone they're not used to. That's why, after saving the village, I want to work to become someone even more worthy of being chief. I wouldn't want anyone to ever feel ashamed that I represent them.

Hmm...

So what's YOUR dream, Shallie?

Ehh? I, uh... My dream... Is... To fly... I guess.

To fly?

Yeah! Like... On a broom! Like my master! Does that...make sense? I mean, I know I would have to make something with alchemy, and have fun anywhere I wanted...

Hehe, that makes sense. It sounds like you.

Wha? Really?

Yes! Once you can fly, please, take me along sometime!

Oh, totally!

Is that why you're training with Wilbell? To learn how to fly?

Well, kinda... She also really helps me out, so I want to repay her.

Do you want to learn magic? It sounds like it might be kinda tough...

You think so?

Eh??

Good morning, Shallie.

Wha!! Shallie?! Oooh, right, I stayed over here last night.

Hehe, you were sleeping pretty well... Do you feel like you got some rest?

Yeah. How about you?

I feel wonderful.

What're you gonna do now?

I need to study what's going on in this world right now... What's happening to it... That seems like the next logical step to saving the village.

Alright. I'll help out. Just let me know if you need anything.

Okay... Wow! I feel like I can do anything with you!

I feel like everything will turn out just fine if it's with you, too. We can do this, together!

The distant frontier

I suppose... I've heard it's been quite a few decades since anyone last travelled there.

I'm sure the situation has changed a lot since then.

True, but I think it's worth looking at if it gives us a hint about solving the water crisis.

I suppose I could send Escha...

Wha? Me? Really?

Wait a minute, you're not sending her off on her own, are you?

Despite her appearance, Escha is quite the skilled alchemist.

Still, we can't supply food...

But you need water, and combat supplies...

I can make those too.

...Well how do you travel?

I'll give you one guess.

...Okay, do whatever you want.

Alright. I'm sorry to have to ask, but you mind investigating this?

Sure, but I want you to do all the paperwork I've got piled up...!

Absolutely not, you do that before you leave.

Aghh.

This isn't a vacation...

Hello...

Hello, Shallie!

Ah, you're here.

Thanks for the other day. I mentioned there was a good chance of victory, but I didn't realize with how little damage.

Because everyone worked together.

I guess. So what do you need?

Uh, I just thought there might be something I could help with.

We can't come up with stuff on the spot every day. We'll let you know when we decide on something.

You can practice your alchemy in the meantime!

Remember, the basics are just as important!

Solle, are you ready to make a decision about that idea?

Yes, I have. I've decided to go ahead with it.

I still say you shouldn't, but it's your call.

Oh, hello Shallies.

Hello, Mr. Solle... Are you going somewhere?

No, I actually had some business with you.

Huh, with us?

What!? You, Mr. Solle!?

...Is that so surprising?

I-I'm a little surprised too... Why did you decide this?

Escha was a little responsible for it, during the time she was working in Colseit. But the larger reason is that there are many things I cannot properly grasp by just reading reports at a desk. I'd like to actually get out and see things with my own eyes.

Mr. Solle... You really are serious.

This is my job.

Huh? I think you're just that kind of character.

Regardless, please let me know when you're departing on an investigation.

Okay, I understand.

Um...how will you fight?

The homunculi do a lot more than just reproduce the items you use outside of Stellard. They are skilled in a wide variety of skills, and I plan to use them effectively on future expeditions.

(Using...the homunculi to fight?)

Oh, by the way, Shallistera. I heard you were the one who fulfilled my request for a Stellapearl.

Yes, how was it? Did it turn out well?

The city I was in previously didn't have such a crunchy confection. It was very dynamic. It wasn't too sweet, so it's definitely not for everyone. But, I'm not one who minds either way. I'm surprised alchemy can create treats with such texture.

Uh... You don't really need to look into it that much...

Of course I need to. I'd never had it before, and I didn't want to hold anything back. The nut on top was a decent accent, too. It tasted a little different from a walnut.

U-Um...

There were a few flavors for sweets in Colseit too. They have many apples, so fruit themes were common... But I understand how to make Stellapearls now. I can make them whenever I want.

Ohh, I see... I'm glad we helped...?

Well then, see you later!

I've managed to negotiate an increase in supplies you can take out in the field. Taking more items will help you fulfill more and more jobs. So...

Yes! I'll do even more!

This is a request from my master!

You're going to take it? If you are, I'll explain it for you. The request we received is a search for magical catalysts in the region.

Magical catalysts... Like what?

From what I was told, it's called Liecester Meterorite Iron. It falls from the sky, apparently.

It falls from the sky... Does that really happen?

No idea. But there're legends about it, and it comes up in some books too. Also... Around here, there're craters all over the place where they say stars have fallen. Some are bigger than Stellard. If you hunt around there, you might find what we need. Although apparently, they look a lot like regular rocks... Anyway, good luck. Try not to disappoint our client.

Okay, I'll do my best!

You know, I think we picked up some of them when we were in the Sand Dragon's nest. Are these the rocks, Raoul?

Hey, yeah, they sure look like them. The client wanted four of them, so here you are.

Whew...

Hello, Escha.

Oh! Shallies! You came at the perfect time.

Huh? For what?

I'm actually planning to open here, but there's so much to do... Ahhh!!

Oh, are you okay?

Yeah, I'm fine, just a little tired. Anyway, do you mind lending me a hand?

Yes, of course! (I heard Escha is an excellent alchemist, but she's also so easy to talk to...)

Don't mention it...

I'll open my shop soon, so please come by again when you can!

Okay! I look forward to seeing what kind of stuff you have to offer!

Oh, Shallies! I have something else to tell you! It's really exciting!

Hello, Escha. What's...so exciting?

What's up?

Well, Solle said to take a break from the paperwork, and to help out with the investigations.

The investigations...?

Yeah, you're investigating the water sources around here, right? The original reason I was dispatched here was to help out with that.

Wait... That means!

Yup, from now on, I'll be able to go with you on your investigations. Give me a call anytime.

Wow... I'd feel really reassured if you're with us, Escha.

...Is this really reassuring?

There's so many people helping me... I have to do my best for everyone.

Now that the Sand Dragon's gone, I can travel further out to sea... I can finally search for the ghost ship.

(The ghost ship... I remember her mentioning that before...)

I'll definitely find it...!

(She seems really happy...)

Wait, ghost ship?

Yes, Jurie says she's been reading a lot of reports of mysterious ships in the Dusk Sea, including what she thinks is a ghost ship.

Well, I read a lot of things, and the topic of a large ghost ship somewhere in the Dusk Sea keeps coming up.

Ghost ship means...treasure, right?!

Well, I haven't heard of any treasure, but it's very possible. The one I've been reading about right now... There's just one passage that's bothering me... "Those who do not possess the light of truth shall wander for eternity"... Happen to know anything about it?

No, not at all...

Light... Could that mean a lamp!? No, I doubt it...

I'm sure it's describing some sort of trap in the ship... Well, if I find any more information, I'll be sure to let you two know.

That's right! I've travelled between many settlements, big and small, so I'm quite confident with my selection.

Travelling, huh... I'm sure it's difficult since it's for work, but I kind of like the idea.

Is there any reason why you don't stay in one place?

Of course that's to trick... I mean develop new markets... No, wait. It's to deliver items to fulfill the hopes and dreams of everyone everywhere! I've come to Stellard to break up the monotony of every day life with a breath of fresh air. Katla's shop is fun to browse, fun to buy from, and fun to use these products! Please, buy whatever you like!

These are some valuable items...

Oh man! I forgot! I forgot to tell my mom I was back! Sorry Shallie, I'll be right back.

Wha-?

Music: Mother's Wish

Oh, Shallie...

What's wrong, mom?

I bought something nice, but I don't have enough money...

What exactly did you buy...!?

(What...is this? ...That looks useless, no matter how I try to spin it.)

Don't worry mom, I'll give you 500 Cole to pay for it. Hahh... My money... And I'd finally saved up a decent amount...

Thank you so much! I'll be more careful next time... I'm sorry.

(Well, at least she looks happy. I can make this up with more work. I won't let something like this get me down!) Wait... Oh yeah! Mom, did you hear about the Sand Dragon?

Oh... Oh that! I'm glad to see you're safe.

(Oh brother...)

I'm sure it was really scary, but you beat a Sand Dragon! Your father would be really impressed.

Heh...well, I didn't defeat the Sand Dragon by myself... Everyone was helping me, including the other Shallie.

She's a wonderful girl. You should be glad you have such a great friend.

Yeah... I know. ...Oh right. I should do the training Master Wilbell told me to do. I already finished the assignment, but it's important to continue practicing...

Hmm, so she's still at it...

Wah, Master! When did you get here!? You should've told me sooner! Just look at these brilliant swings! I might even be able to win the world swinging championship at this rate!

...What was your goal, again?

I'm just kidding! My goal is to become a great alchemist, that won't ever change.

...Well, I will say you're unmatched when it comes to persistence.

Yes! So please, I'll putup with any training, no matter how harsh!

Huh?

Just talking to myself. More importantly...

Huh? Wha? W-what's this!?

It's a monster I created. It won't attack on its own, so it should be good practice for a fledgling alchemist.

Then does that mean...!

But you can't beat this thing if you half-rear end it. Just think of it as a test of your strength, and don't hold back.

Okay! I'll definitely win!

It's going to be hanging out near Shallistera's ship. Make sure to bring her and her friends along if you hope to beat this thing.

Wait, won't that be cheating?

This time...nah. I'll even help you if you want.

And you're sure it won't attack?

Yep. It's a creation of magic, so I can basically make anything I wanted!

Wow... Even a dragon?

Uh...yeah, definitely!

Oh, Ms. Shallistera. There was actually something I wanted to ask you.

What is it...?

I'd like you to tailor some clothing.

Clothing...?

Yes, the chairman is in need of new clothes.

This suit may be a little worn, but it's still perfectly wearable...

The sleeves are beginning to fray. I believe it would be best if you replaced it.

Hmm... I suppose if you say so, I'll indulge in a new one.

Very well then. I've written the details here for you.

I understand, I'll do my best.

Music: News

I know nothing of alchemy, so I'm not sure how she's going to make this, Ms. Linca.

Not to worry, sir, I've already talked with some alchemists here in Stellard and they've come up with a recipe to make a new suit for you.

Really? Hm... Can you make this, young lady?

Yes, everything looks good. I'll be sure to have a new suit for you soon, Mr. Perriend.

Well, both of us have a lot of work to do! Let's get going!

Excuse me. I have to put away some of the stuff we got from the Sand Dragon's nesst...

Music: The Warrior's Holiday

No idea. I don't remember saying anything strange, but I did feel out of place when I came back to the village.

...Out of place? Now that you mention it, you always had this frown on your face during festivals...

I don't think things like the Water Festival should be held when there's a water shortage.

But the Water Festival is important to show gratitude to the god of water...

Yeah, I know. That's what everyone believes. But I can't just ignore reality... Please don't tell dad.

You must be having a hard time.

The job is just too much for you.

Shallie, it's fine to look for a way to save the village. But you need to find your own happiness, too.

...Kortes.

Do you think you can find happiness here in Stellard?

I'm not sure yet. The only reason I'm here is to save the village, but I'm not sure what I'll do after that. I told Shallie what I thought of doing in the future, but to be honest, I'm just not sure what I should do. I love Stellard and Lugion, but right now, I don't think I could choose between them.

I'm sure you'll find your answer before this journey is over. It's not a decision you have to make now. Anyway, don't tell anyone about this. It'll just cause trouble again.

I understand. I have to start doing some alchemy now, so...

Shallie, is it okay if you stay here to do alchemy instead of going back home?

I'm here because I want to! I'm not very good at alchemy, so watching someone better would really help.

Oh, I see. But, I've still got a lot to learn. I hope I can be a great alchemist like Escha while I'm living in Stellard.

Besides, I...want to learn with you, Shallie!

Really...? Thank you so much!

Shallie, you here?

Oh, hello Jurie.

I've got some exciting news for the two of you. Come on down to the Hunter's Hangout when you're both ready.

Wow... Maybe she found some treasure?!

Wow...you two sure came down here fast. Do you have a minute to talk?

Yes, what do you need? (Hmm, Jurie seems a little different from usual.)

...Do you remember when we talked about the ghost ship?

Of course. The one packed with treasure, right?

Yeah. I didn't know where it was before... But I've heard a hunter saw something resembling it. It's in the sea south of the Eastern Sea of Smoke. Nobody's actually gone inside it yet... So... We might find, not just treasure, but also relics from the past era.

Isn't this a huge chance?

Yeah, that's why I want your help. Can you go with me?

(There could be something useful for alchemy... Even something that could save the village. And above all, I'd be helping Jurie.) Okay! Please, I'd love to accompany you.

That's the spirit. Can you take out your map? It's right...

Here.

Just south of the Sand Dragon's nest?

Yeah. The hunter that saw it was on one of the Corporation's ships. It'll be a long journey, but it shouldn't take too long if we take your ship, Shallistera.

Of course!

It's hard to explain... I suppose you just need to build trust, though it might take a while...

That'll take too long!! I want to pet and hug him RIGHT NOW!!

Don't understand. But doubt. I like. Petting. Or hugging.

Was there anything special that helped you two become friends?

I don't think so...

Trying. Solle's shiny. Changed. My life!

I do remember you being quite touched when I first offered you some sweets.

Yes. That time. Very shocked. Never forget. Also. Solle's kindness!

...It sounds like it was really cute. I wish I'd seen it...

I said. Don't make fun. Of me. Expert treasure hunter!

Fun fact about the Sand Dragon: if you waste too much time in fighting it, it'll do a move where it grabs the ship in its jaws and throws it up in the air. It doing so ends the fight, and there's a short scene where everyone gets a little rattled and decides to go back at it. So, the fight is effectively on a timer. On a total New Game, you'd at most get a couple Burst Modes before it will do this. Ice Bombs are considerably useful, since the dragon is weak to Water, and at this point, you have no moves or other bombs you can make that inflict Water damage.

Also, Wilbell's creature does not attack at all, like she says, but the catch with that fight? It has 150,000 HP on Hardcore, which is the difficulty I'm playing Stera's side on (Despair and NO HOPE are the two higher difficulties, but are basically impossible on a New Game). I am playing Lotte's side on Despair mostly, with occasional branching into NO HOPE.

Fun fact: my second playthrough of the game, I was playing Lotte on Despair the entire game. When I started up Stera's story for this LP, I forgot what the difficulty was and ended up getting a game over on the first battle. More than a little embarrassing I think.

There's only three bosses you have to fight to finish the game, and all of them are pretty cool if you ask me.

Lotte doesn't know the difference between the two. She's under the impression Wilbell is an alchemist who can do magic.
