Real talk though. I gave the first couple chapters of paladin a whirl and the steady introduction of aspects of the pantheon that governs this world, some pages on magic words, and just giving us a look at the main cast were nice. But why does this story have to be an isekai when it's clear it has a better leg to stand on with regards to a unique fantasy setting? I can guess from earlier comments that this little detail is inconsequential to the story at large so I wonder if it's a huge boost to a story for just having it be an isekai now? This was a web novel first correct?

This same thing happened with 'Legend of the White Kingdom' where the story actually has more depth to it than just being a video game analogue but the authors introduce that idea of them being reincarnated in the first couple chapters. And in this story they also drop that plot detail going forward.

This thread has too much isekai and not enough of anything else. Let's fix that with some foxy grandpas.

Ojiichan-Shinanai is a fun little romance that's unfortunately in translation hell but for what's there it's fun. Story is about an old war hero who is visited by an angel aiming to help him pass on to heaven. Things do not go as she planned since the old man has a lot more vigor than she anticipated. She winds up moving in after promising to stay by his side until he's finally ready to croak to help guide him to the afterlife.

it's just a kiss...for now

Next one has resumed translations although it's on a monthly timer it would seem.
The Old Knight on the Border - Bard Loen
An aged knight renounces his assets and Position after 58 years of service helping to defend the kingdom at the border between humanity and a monster filled wilderness. The catalyst is that his title and prestige have once again attracted the harassment of one of the other local families seeking to overtake the land he's helped to defend. His goals after retirement are to travel around and seek out the daughter of his former benefactors one last time as well as just finding a peaceful place to pass on himself. Much like the Ojiisan from the above story, he's got a bit too much energy to just roll over easily, and the fact that he's still being pursued by the warring family after him doesn't help.

But this old war dog has his priorities straight even in the face of assassins, intrigue, and all kinds of supernatural shenanigans.

A good meal keeps the body active.

It helps that even without extensive knowledge of the individual races we meet, it really does feel like there is a lot of culture to some of them based purely on their languages, and some small snippets of their lives.

Stravaganza has also resumed translations, there is only one volume left and The war is shockingly brutal. from what I remembered and the sheer number of named characters that die, mostly Vivian's own entourage caught me off guard. It's a shame her idealism couldn't do anything here, an opponent that only delights in slaughter can't be reasoned with.

Keep in mind there is one volume left, although it's side stories from what I've seen that take place after this. The story does have a dip although for me it was far early when Clara was just chasing around some pervert for chapters on end. Pointless torture aside the rest of the series was overall good, and given the drought of fantasy series that aren't also isekai that's a god send.

Series I'd been keeping up with for the past couple months has seen a spike in updates this week.

Primal Gods in Ancient Lands is the story of Miyo who lives in pre-8th century Japan when the Ookami are still entities of power and influence. Recently Orphaned and chosen by her village to be a sacrifice to their regions patron diety she has a chance encounter with a wandering monk and his two disciples which leads her to have a change of fate. It's partially because I have a hard on for the parts of japanese mythology that relate to regional gods and such but this series is on it's own a very good read. The artist is also very good, nothing less than what I'd expect for someone published in Harta magazine. Very good scenery and paneling and he knows how to sell you on the imposing nature of a Kami.

Retired heroes Has also gotten an update. It's out of the frying pan and into the fire for these two.

Oh no, that's nothing compared to my initial confusion and eventual realization about the tangled web of motivations surrounding one girls slash-fic and how the fate of the monarchy rests on her writing a sequel. That is a premise worth following and some pretty girl blushing like a maiden over a dark and brooding man is just par for the course.

My point was that "fanfiction" as a term doesn't match the setting since the word is very much a recent construct. Doesn't have the same ring as "epic" or "ballad" does. Of course this is the same story that references Eminem in the title so... I don't know. It just pets my peeve.

The squealing fangirls with embroidered teddy bears and signs did not escape my notice either. But It's not logical or consistent, some things just stuck out to me more than others. Like how the author draws eyes. Everyone has such a piercing gaze from the raven haired siblings to people running stores, the author seems to have put eyeliner on most of the characters.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Since the thread is active I do have some other recommendations
Kamuya Ride takes place during the Kofun era of ancient Japan. In a time when the power of the Gods have lessened and soon the era of man will fully be realized, Prince Osu son of the current emperor encounters a wandering artisan specializing in earthen wares on his way to suppress unrest in the region. However, what he finds is more than he and his forces can handle and it's up to a solitary warrior, a man dedicated to maintaining the border between the worlds of Men and Gods; kamen Kamuya Ride.

Minor factoid and I don't think it will go anywhere. But Prince Osu is about 300 years late for his adventures since the historical records I could find about him place him having lived between 70AD and 114AD later years of the Yayoi period and not the Kifun which started in 300AD. Probably the author mixing the legend of Yamamoto Takeru with the dominant style of burial mound from the Kofun era whose designs are identical to keyholes.

Upping the scale there is also Dodoma wherein two brothers find out that the country of Wanokuni in which they live in is more than meets the eyes.

The peace they enjoy is shattered the day two outsiders appear as shortly afterwards invaders arrive bringing with them the truth that Wanokuni is a massive titan and it has been otherwise inactive due to actions committed in the past that place everyone in danger.

Picked up this one recently. Toujuushi Bestialious is set during the Roman conquest of Europe, specifically Brittania in a world where mythical creatures and demi-humans once thrived before being purged from the history books. The story follows a handful of different characters both human and monster all bound by their familial relationships which fly in the face of Roman logic and creed.

Expect a lot of gladiatorial fights and very good art.

There's also a series called Magus of the Library which is published by Kodasha and tells the story of a young half-elf boy whose desire is to become a librarian. This is a really good story if you enjoy worldbuilding since the general idea is to explore the different cultures and races that exist in this world as well as the efforts of the Central Library to preserve the collective histories and texts of the world. There are 3 volumes out currently with the 4th being released in english today.

By the power of Grayskull, I am bumping this thread. There's a lot of good fantasy manga running right now and I've been sitting on some that recently have been updating again.

Touge Oni got it's latest volume translated and there's one hell of an opening for this one.

For those who need a quick refresher The gang had traveled to Izumo to converse with the one of the chief dieties of Japan Okuninushi. This revealed to them that in order to find our missing Dragon kami they would need to traverse to the actual moon. The volume opens with a pretty metal interpretation of the Kuni-yuzuri, or "transfer of Land" that happened between the terrestrial kami and the heavenly kami. It's also interesting that the kami of earth have animal forms but the kami of the heavens are human bodyparts. Might be related to the ability for humans to become immortal space farers known as Tensin as well as the most recent chapters intrigue about the curse of the oni Since the translators only work with volumes there will be new chapters weekly for the next month or so before the wait for the next volume resumes.

Also updating weekly is the newest volume of Radiant. This one is actually a french graphic novel that received an anime adaptation a couple years back. Great visuals and plotting I really like the MC because Seth really earns his progress as a character. The story isn't gunshy about the biggotry within the setting either as magically capable people are the results of being more or less cursed by vagrant monsters known only as Nemesis, something that's already a death sentence as mere contact kills most people instantly. Seth himself has grown up always on the run with his surrogate mother dealing with societies general fear of him. One aspect of this is boiling over in the current volumes and we're in the fire nation arc of the story where we see how things are within the territory of the main antagonists against wizards and the like, the inquisition.

:allears: I really love most of the characters in this story. Especially senile Gandalf.

Last so this post doesn't go full :words: is a new series. Re Cervin. It's 6 chapters in so far but the story focuses around a princess/priestess and the man claiming to be her father as they seek help in the aftermath of a calamity that has left their kingdom in ruins as an ancient dragon was unleashed and a great magical fire was summoned to contain it for the time being. Trouble is, the young girl has no memory of the man claiming to be her father at all, presumably as the price for her part in containing the beast.

Anyone read/reading any interesting series?

Stravaganza also got an update recently. If you can take those quick jumps between badass, wholesome and horny.

After the brutality that was the last two volumes of Stravanga it's nice to just have some epilogue chapters that are relatively peaceful barring one epic beatdown. I'd heard the author had retired after Stravaganza but clearly that was wrong because they started up a series in 2020 called Sinner of the Azure Abyss which is currently in scanlation limbo but we have about 2 volumes of chapters available. It's got mermaids and romance with humans and I'm interested in seeing where it goes.

For stravangza I'm less interested in what is coming next
