Any other short action shows? I really liked Kyosougiga, and I'm a huge fan of the action in FLCL/Diebuster, as well as the more intense scenes in One Punch Man. It seems really tough to find this sort of frantic super-kinetic action :(

It's not there all the time, but Giant Robo has some of that. Giant Robo is also excellent in general.

I think I tried that one at some point, probably due to the second gif you posted there!
Only watched the first episode - really did have nice action, but felt painfully cliched, like the most utterly generic people-with-powers thing. Not really bothered by the fanservice, just... didn't really catch my interest. Maybe I should give it another chance.

Have you seen Shin Mazinger Z? it's by the same director as Giant robo, and while it isn't as good it is still quite excellent

Sure - gonna keep that in mind. That kind of attitude kept me from watching K-On and Madoka for the longest time, and oooooooh boy those were GREAT. I dunno, I've got an anime avatar. :v:

Of course, once in a while, you get a Nisemonogatari and feel a deep sense of crushing disappointment in yourself and humanity and why am I suddenly in jail

Checked this out, and oh man that is totally Giant Robo right there. Somewhat generic, somewhat annoying boy protagonist? Check. Badass people having badass lines? Check. People repeatedly yelling "Father" or variations thereof? Check. Nonsensical awesome supernatural powers and complete chaos? Check.
Went :stare: throughout the entire first episode. It does not gently caress around. Even if I end up not liking it all that much, I think I'll definitely check out the finale, because that much insanity crammed into one episode is a sight to behold.

as the name implied, the first episode is actually the last episode, chornologically. Check out the second one as well, it's where the story actually starts.

Also, i am sorry but you called Kouji generic and annoying and so i must destroy you

There have been a lot of fantasy anime series released in the past couple years. Yona, Arslan, Rokka, Snow White, and probably more I'm forgetting. Did any of them turn out to be great, must-watch shows for fantasy fans?

For reference, Twelve Kingdoms is near the top of my list of favorite anime (new novel this year hype), and I really enjoyed Moribito as well.

Snow White isn't really a fantasy show but it is fantastic.

Just wanted to thank this thread for pushing me to watch Gundam X. 4 eps in and I think it's quite good. It's not quite as...fast-paced as other Gundam series are, but that's fine. It's going to be as hard as Turn A was for remembering all the names, though.

EDIT: I love how continuity-minded it is even if it isn't in the UC. It's the first non-UC show I've seen that references Newtypes, uses the original colony design, and even keeps the "Mobile Suit = giant humanoid robot, Mobile Armor = giant non-humanoid robot" distinction.

It's pretty obviously meant to be a what-if scenario of a worst-case One Year War scenario, so the shared terminology and designs are in service to that. All gundam keep the Suit/Armor distinction though.

Barakamon mentioned above is a good choice.

Shirobako hits two out of three - it's adult characters (don't let the opening of episode 1 fool you) and has some solid character moments and comedy, but it's not really mellow in the way that Flying Witch or Tanaka-kun are.

I wouldn't really call Shirobako a comedy, exactly. It has jokes sure, but it also has a fair amount of serious drama. It is very good though.

Mazinger Z being the origin of the genre is a myth, the original mecha manga was actually Tetsujin 28-go, which preceded it by 16 years. It also had a very good reimagining by the same director as 2009 Mazinger Z in 2004.

But, I am going to try to hunker down and knock a few series out with some upcoming free time. So, lay'em on me.

Concrete Revolutio. Technically it started last year but it finished this year. It's a story about alternate-universe 1960s-70s Japan, and nearly every character and event in the show refers back to either 1) Time-accurate pop culture or 2) actual historical events. Despite this the show is very thematically cohesive, as well as well animated. Furthermore, it also uses a non-chronological narrative in a really interesting and cool way. The nature of the show also means that you have a magical girl, giant robot and were-jaguar fighting together against knock-off Godzilla, which is rad as gently caress.

I just finished Jojo Part 4 and I liked it for the most part. Really I'm just looking for something with good energetic likeable characters in an action/adventure setting.

Stuff I've liked a lot so far:

Jojo - Primarily part 2 (I liked all of it, but 2 was the best). I did like how innovative some of the stands were in 3/4 and curmudgeonly, racist grandpa joseph rules, but it doesn't get much better than a wisecracking jerkass fighting god. Jojo can be pretty bleak and violent but overall it's zany enough that the overall tone is light, which is what I'm looking for.
Black Lagoon: It's basically just a dumb action movie. I wish the main character went through more growth over the series, but he started as a shinji type character so what can you do.
TTGL - Hot blooded robot punching at its finest, though I could have done without the fanservice
FLCL - Liked it, but it was a bit too "random" for me. I guess I don't "get" it. or I'm thinking too hard about it.
Kill La Kill - More for the supporting cast than anything else. I don't really care about seeing boobs and butts. The Zeni guy and Gamagoori ruled.
Panty and Stocking - I don't even know if this even really counts as anime, but it owned, the soundtrack was incredible, and there was actually very little fanservice despite the entire show being about sex and indulgence.
Dirty Pair Project Eden: Like half the animated shots in this are just generic computer/machine/science bullshit and I love it. Explosions, no plot, cool scientist bad guy, insanely good 80s music. A+
Haven't you Heard? I'm Sakamoto - I actually watched all of this. I normally don't like high school settings or gag anime, but this did everything just right.
Mobile Fighter G Gundam: I don't want a bunch of whiny 14 year old kids and nonsensical plot/religious imagery getting in the way of my silly robot punching.
Tonkatsu DJ - No explanation needed

That's a lot of :words: to say I just want something weird but energetic like Food Wars! without the fanservice and less highschooly. I want a character who is already cool and his or her character arc is to become cooler, not to turn from a wimp to a badass.

You should check out Patlabor.

Some Gundam is really good, some Gundam is really bad, most of it falls somewhere in between. If you wanna give Gundam a try I'd recommend Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket. It is the rare Gundam trifecta of good, short, self-contained.
