legend of galactic heroes is really long. does it take like 30 episodes to get going or is there a ton of unnecessary padding or anything like that, or is it just a billion episodes of nonstop quality anime?

durarara is pretty good and one of the main characters is a dullahan and she is awesome and gets plenty of screentime

did you ever watch baccano?

if you liked baccano, durarara is like more baccano but slightly more chill

if you didn't watch baccano go loving watch that poo poo right the gently caress now

is Garo good? pretty much all i know about it is that it's animated by MAPPA (which i hope means that the production value is high) and that the anichart's entry for the currently airing second season includes the tags "shounen" and "action." my current level of interest in it is mostly based on the hope that these two things combined lead to really cool fight sequences.

If you want sweet robot action try gundam build fighters

Technically that's sweet children's toys action though

i remember watching the first 2 episodes of try and thinking it was shaping up to be really good, and then it quickly became very mediocre

maybe they did the thing where the build burning explodes from the inside of the dom and went "yep, that's the best thing we're ever gonna make, no point trying to do anything worthwhile anymore"

ninjewtsu

Ive already seen chaika, and I really liked it!

I started watching konosuba earlier today, the first episode was ok. I'm gonna give it another episode or two later probably.

Maybe some kind of fantasy themed slice of life then? I just really like the idea of watching a slice of life in a setting that would normally lend itself to being about some grand adventure. Danmachi scratched a similar itch for me, if that helps with what kind of anime I'm looking for

Gave log horizon a few episodes, I'm enjoying it so far. I appreciate that it's exploring the trapped in an mmo deal without the whole "if you die in the game you die in real life" garbage. It's nice to see some focus being put on how actually being trapped in a video game wouldn't be all that dangerous - the threat of other players getting bored is the biggest threat immediately presented.

If you want fantasy sol can't go wrong with Aria, the main character is a gondolier on the terraformed Mars canals and is incredibly chill. I think there about three TV series, the earliest from like 2005

i watched the anime and it was alright. they have stylish outfits. you could definitely do worse. most of my problems with it were probably specific to the anime (80% of the action scenes were pretty lackluster, and then once every 3-5 episodes a really good one would happen)

then again, the cool demon effects were probably specific to the anime too. that sweet visual effect was more responsible for me watching the anime than it probably should've been.

It was really good but rife with animation errors . The fights were well choreographed and the backgrounds were gorgeous paintings but I don't think the animation itself was much to speak of.

I wouldn't really consider durarara as action

There's action scenes occasionally, but they're no where near the focus of the show

As I recall they're generally pretty short too? Idk I haven't actually seen all of durarara and it's been like half a year, I should get back on that actually

if you just want a series of cool fights and don't care too much about anything else, gundam build fighters has very good fights. you don't need to have seen other gundam shows to enjoy it (there are some pretty cool nods to gundam if you're familiar witht he franchise but nothing really improtant). do note that it's not representative of the larger gundam franchise pretty much at all.

Ehhh I'd recommend seeing a "proper" Gundam series first before Build Fighters, any of them, just because half the fun is recognising the neat custom kits. Iron Blood Orphans or Gundam 00 are both fantastic Gundam series worth watching in that regard.

imo the excellent fight choreography is more than half the fun

recognizing the neat customs is fun but it's pretty secondary to everything else that makes build fighters good

I would like to hear about one anime that pavlov likes without any "you have to look past it being about a sport" type caveats

I believe that pavlov genuinely likes anime, but I can't think of an example of one that he genuinely likes

Ain't nothing above criticism.

this is true but my actual point was "too bad this is about a sport" isn't actually a very good criticism, though is a perfectly valid expression of personal taste

were i to say, for example, "i very much enjoy attack on titan, but the show isn't perfect. it has significant pacing problems and one of the main 'mysteries' of the second half was easily solved in half an episode by anyone who could remember what most of the important characters from the last arc looked like, but it took until the end of the season for the 'mystery' to be unveiled," that'd be critical of a show that i genuinely enjoy a lot.

were i to say, "i very much enjoy attack on titan, but you really have to look past the fact that it's shonen anime to appreciate it" that wouldn't really be criticism and would just read as a weird blanket attack on a very large and popular genre of anime. that's the kind of caveat i was talking about : really broad spectrum dismissals of the premise/entire genres.

Pavlov posted:

Worst I could say about Tatami Galaxy is the repeated bits might go on 1-2 episodes too long.

see this is evidence that you actually enjoy anime, and is cool to hear. it's alright that the tatami galaxy isn't perfect, and it's extra cool that what you had to say about it wasn't something like "shows about college kids are almost universally stupid, but somehow the tatami galaxy is good despite that"

My understanding of the situation is that the re:zero anime was incredibly popular, meaning there's a lot of demand for a second season, but the first season actually cut a ton of content. Content that wasn't very important to the material covered in season 1, but is absolutely critical to a potential season 2, which makes the prospect of a second season actually being made somewhat difficult.

Someone else please feel free to correct me on whatever inaccuracies

is the foreshadowing stuff left out in the anime really integrated into the plot, or is it stuff they could potentially cover in a side OVA series that takes place at various timeframes during the main series? or some kind of solution along those lines?

i'm just spitballing here i guess, i'd hate to see a show this good get a bad second season because of cutting that stuff out, or not get a second season period because of how difficult continuing to adapt the story would be

Vanilla Mint Ice posted:

The only viable OVA besides side stories about Crusch's faction's members, would be about the daily slice of life events inbetween the second and third arc at the Roswaal Mansion involving the main cast. You can kinda of inject some of Subaru and Emilia's missing character traits in those scenes and at some point maybe Emilia, Puck and Roswaal can have a conversation among themselves reminiscing how they first met. And then at the end of the episode maybe have the Beatrice reveal to leave it off with an ominous cliffhanger.

But everything else missing would be hard to put in at this point, the biggest being Puck and Satella. The Satella missing stuff I could see just getting added in the second season. But Puck is a whole another story. At this point of the story Subaru basically hates Puck's guts and already gotten into a shouting match with him so anime only viewers are going to be in for a surprise at the very first episode of the second season in regards to his attitude towards Puck. It was obvious even without that crunchyroll interview that someone on the script writer/director staff liked Puck alot since pretty much everything negative portrayed about him were taken out. I guess it might have to do with merchandising. In the japanese fandom there's a reason Puck is commonly known as Number One Useless Character in Re:Zero and P in Puck Stands For Piece of Trash.

To get this thread a bit more on topic: what are some good animes that are packed full of really intense emotion? Something along the lines of gundam thunderbolt, the king arc of hunter x hunter, or attack on titan? Like, an anime that hits you in the face with a sledgehammer of raw emotion every episode? I'm not 100% sure how articulate it better than that but something along the lines of the shows I mentioned
