Yeah, no, I tried one episode of serious Enma and it was just boring. Boogiepop Phantom or Lain might be an idea, neither of are scary exactly but I can't think of anything else that goes weird and unsettling better.

Monogatari is a series with lots of really good things and also lots of really bad things and it's up to the individual viewer to decide which is more important, I feel.

It's a 39 episode tv series from the late 90's with a low budget, that's pretty much its excuse.

Most of the stuff I can think of with 'epic gun battles' in, they're not very good and the worst thing about the shows in question. The Gunsmith Cats OAV was okay, I don't remember the actual shooting guns stuff being anything special though. Also I've literally never cared about another sports anime but Chihiyafuru is great.

Eh, I mean the TV series is old and was low budget even at the time, I love it if only for the inventiveness they used to portray the violence in a TV friendly way, and compared to a lot of shounen is relatively concise and well paced (once you get past the weird opening thirty episodes of filler) but it's still an old rear end TV show. The 1986 movie has one of most hilarious dubs of all time and I love it. The Shin Hokuto no Ken OVA is mostly forgettable but sometimes interesting because it were the first time Hokuto Shinken has ever been animated without being censored (the 1986 movie was originally but pressure from parent groups forced them to censor it before it hit theatres) and is insanely violent in places. The first two movies in the 2007 trilogy are decent enough recaps of the Souther and final battle with Raoh arcs but the last one is an anime original prequel and kind of meh.

It's been subbed but I haven't had chance to watch it yet, I think the general consensus was better than the second season but not great. I don't know if it would make any sense without watching season 2 before anyway.

At one point during the height of SailorMoon/DBZ popularity someone was planning on localising the Rouroni Kenshin TV series for US networks as Samurai X, it ended up not happening but for some reason ADV stuck with it for the movie/OAV releases, just in case I guess.

Torquemadras posted:Well, I tried to get into Patlabor. First the TV series, and when that didn't click for me, I tried the OVA. Yeah, and... I'm not that into it. I dig the "realistic" aspect of the mechas, and it's occasionally really drat hilarious - Episode 4 of the OVA in particular was a pitch-perfect parody of kaiju movies, holy poo poo - but I'm... just underwhelmed by the mechas. And I don't really like the cast enough. Hm. I wasn't expecting another Diebuster (which instantly shot right into my Top 10 anime because I loving love FLCL and, as I discovered, cool mechas), but I'm still underwhelmed. Oh well. If you don't mind a longer series GaoGaiGar gets pretty nuts eventually, though it takes a while.

I want the kind that comes from irrevocable loss and/or struggling through some kind of intense personal suffering. Perhaps with some nobility mixed in, but not something that's just in the epilogue unless it's really powerful. Below is a list of some examples of the general direction of the kind of thing I am looking for. I don't mind if there's build up to it. Romance type stories are still acceptable recs here, but should probably be tragic in some way (see: Princess Tutu, Utena). Kubla Khan posted:Guys can you recommend me a historical anime. Basically I saw Hyouge Mono, liked it a lot, so now I'm craving for more. Things I'm looking for in particular You could try The Hakkenden, it's a 13 episode OVA from the 90's, there's a fairly large fantasy element but it's mostly rooted in Shinto practices and folklore, there's no super powered battles or anything. It's set in 15th century Japan and mostly grounded in actual history. It also has Masaaki Yuasa's first directorial work on a couple of episodes. Don't confuse it with the otome game adaptation from a couple of years ago though.
