3) I wanna watch those weird 90s ovas/ movies that freaked me out as a child with 0 context where do I start

1) Otokojuku and Fist of the North Star come to mind

2) As mentioned, Non Non Biyori is the most feel-good show there is, but it definitely falls into the "nothing happening" category. Yotsuba, if you're OK with manga. Maybe some of the stuff from the dad manga thread if you find unrealistically cute children to be feel-good? At least one of those has an anime (Aishiteruze Baby).

If anybody has any good "let's just go on an adventure" shows that'd be cool too. Shows that are generally fun would be nice too. Just finished rewatching The Tower of Druaga, that show was the best for being fun.

Oh, and to make one last demand, it might be a little simple but anybody know shows with good swordfights? For such a universal protagonist weapon the list of shows with good proper swordfights is awfully low.

If you've managed to avoid Chaika, that satisfies both of these (well, it's often daggers vs. swords, but the fights are well-choreographed).

Anybody got any good world-building shows? A lot of shows have interesting settings but never really reach beyond what's going on in front of the main characters's faces at any given point. Whether it's a good old fashioned adventure or just a show that likes to talk about its world a lot, that's the sort of thing I'd like to see. I've watched quite a lot of anime so I might have already watched most of the good examples, but any recommendations are appreciated.

And for this half of it.... maybe Legend of the Galactic Space Heroes?

Other decent world-building:
  • Patlabor OVAs
  • Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind (manga, the movie just doesn't have the time for it)
  • ...I feel like there should be more
Katanagatari is fantastic and features really stylish "sword" fighting and good adventure.

Ah, and Rage of Bahamut: Genesis is a really solid adventure show from a year or so back.

Yes, I keep meaning to buy the Nausicaa manga but I couldn't find it at the last con I went to. Most of the reason why I hadn't watched it was because I wasn't sure if I should read the manga first or not.

I'd say order doesn't matter, but the manga is absolutely the better experience.

Sooo, I actually watched Nisemonogatari. I was ready to skip large chunks of it, given its reputation and, uh, ample warnings given in this thread, but I really liked most of Bakemonogatari, so I thought I'd check this out to get to the second season.

I...

I don't wanna go to jail :qq:

What the gently caress was going on with this? Whoever said this season takes everything bad about the series to 11 was right on the mark. Fanservice becomes scene right out of taboo porn, right down to the ultra-flimsy reasons where the most insane behaviour becomes apparently acceptable. Everybody is now from porn dimension, including (and, in fact, almost exclusively) girls under 16. Sexy dames in trouble is okay with me. But here, every once in a while (or for whole episodes), everybody acts like porn characters and it's ~pedophile time~. Not even just the obvious issues with that: it's contrived, stupid and a waste of time. Just great.

On the other hand: when I wasn't frantically skipping forward, there were some nice action scenes (there's the nauseating brutality I was looking for! Yesssss), and the basic story was actually pretty cool. Oh, and a GREAT "villain". He didn't even do much, but I loved every second that Kakei was on screen. Just the sheer contrast to the other characters! And a rad theme song, too. I hope this guy gets more appearances in the future, he's a joy to behold. In general, I really like this show's approach to conflict - almost no-one "wins" by sheer strength, even the action is basically still talking that has spilled over into violence. Coupled with this show's weird-rear end mythology, it's just fun. If it weren't for the boring aimlessness of the first couple episodes plus the obvious negative of KIDDIE PORN DIMENSION, WHAT THE gently caress IS WRONG WITH THIS SHOW, it could've been good.

Well, can't say I haven't been warned. If this continues, I'm out for the sake of my sanity, but I still have hope. I'm just too trusting and naive, in this dark, dark world of anime. :sigh:

Gonna have to watch some Fist of the North Star to forget this...

The good news is, you're over the hump. The rest of the ~gataris are tame in comparison. Nise is both the weirdest and weakest in my opinion, but it's got necessary setup for the later stuff, which you should watch.

I forgot to cancel my Crunchyroll trial so I'd appreciate a couple more recommendations.

Has there been anything like Code Geass or Death Note (smart MC, lots of plans, etc) released in the last couple of years?

I also want to watch (or read) things that make me cry of happiness/heartwarming like the last episode of My Love Story!! or the episode where Sawako reconciles with Yano and Yoshida (volume 2 of the manga).

Thanks!

The World God Only Knows has a scheming protagonist. There's an unfortunate gap between the second and third seasons where they just skipped over material, but what's there is great fun.

For heartwarming, check the single dad manga thread or watch Non Non Biyori.

It is. It's not as good an Ikuhara as Utena (nothing is a good as Utena), but it's miles above Yuri Kuma Arashi. It's got some good, funny scenes, the stock footage is silly and has great music so I never found it to grate too much, and its symbolism is blatant yet sometimes opaque in that signature Ikuhara Style. Most characters are likable, and those that aren't are at least entertaining. I need to rewatch it.

Yo, recommend me something cool if you dare!

Stuff I enjoyed:

Gundam 0080: War In the Pocket (To me, this is the Gundam series that gets the character-driven melodrama right where almost every other Gundam series gets it so dreadfully wrong. 08th MS team is cool until it shits the bed in the last 3 or so episodes. MS IGLOO is ok.)
Kaiji (Manly-tears gambling anime with Marxist sensibilities? It's like it was made for me. I tried Akagi and didn't enjoy it as much. Partly due to the Mahjongg focus and partly due to it not being quite as fun to watch a character who has an iron grip on everything compared to one who's really struggling. That's not to say the "mastermind hero" can't be entertaining.)
Lupin III (I watched the Fujiko Mine series and enjoyed it until it began having a tighter serial narrative towards the end. The leery rape stuff with Fujiko was tasteless and the plot was close to nonsensical.)
Armored Trooper VOTOMS (I've seen and enjoyed Armor Hunter Mellowlink as well.)
JoJo's Bizarre Adventure (COME BACK JOJO)
Mononoke (I didn't enjoy MuShiShi.)
Cowboy Bebop (Another case where the episodic series is very cool but the tendency towards a serial narrative near the end descends into poor writing and overly 'anime' stuff. Samurai Champloo just didn't do it for me.)
Yu Yu Hakusho (A childhood favorite. I'm not opposed to a shonen series if it's good- see JoJo. The combination of the supernatural stuff and the street punks is funny, but it ends up in 'interminable tournament' territory after a while.)
Cromartie High School (Anime comedy is very much a miss for me, but this one was absurd in juuuust the right way. Any comedy anime is going to be a hard sell for me. I watched the dub of this, which I think was the right choice in this case.)

Stuff that didn't do it for me:

Fullmetal Alchemist (Tried both series. There are a lot of elements to like here but it just doesn't come together. Too much goofy, tonedeaf anime poo poo going on. Protagonist isn't likeable.)
Baccanno! (Again, a cool setting and idea, but the complex, layered plot got revealed over time to involve a lot of hand-waving and happenstance, and a lot of the dialogue and character writing were really bad. I liked the Bonnie and Clyde duo.)
Trigun (gently caress this series for having the coolest setting and the most irritating protagonist with the dumbest narrative and conflicts.)
Evangelion (Some awesome design, and the OVAs have some of the most beautifully animated sequences around, but the psychobabble and cargo-cult religious symbol stuff comes off as juvenile in a bad way.)
Attack on Titan
Probably almost all moe/slice of life stuff.

Patlabor. Generally recommended to go Early Days OVAs -> Movie 1 -> Movie 2, then if one wants more, the TV anime, which is in a different continuity with the same characters.

Panty and Stocking With Garterbelt has a fantastic dub and is hilarious with occasional neat action scenes.

e:
I didn't say anything about Patlabor. The thread sells it better than I could.

If it's been a while since you watched Eva, I'd definitely recommend a rewatch sometime. It's been a good dozen years for me, and the first time it didn't do much for me, but I'm right now paused in the middle of the penultimate episode because it got a bit too intense, too sad, too real. I guess it's more about individuals being sad by themselves and less about folks being sad because of circumstances or others' actions, though, so I could see how that might not scratch your current itch.
