I'd been here since the start, but only registered after I discovered YOSPOS. To be fair I'd known about YOSPOS before, but didn't "get it" until I started reading the MS and tech bubble threads.

i think my first account was from 2005. i read the front page daily and didn't even know there was a forum at first. then i lurked the forums a lot. i didn't have a credit card but eventually asked my dad to buy me an account when i was like 16 or 17. there was no yospos then. years later my brother would rant about how funny he thought yospos was and i thought he was talking about byob or fyad or something. now i'm the Top Apple Analyst here and he doesn't even read it anymore!

I joined because I found some article linked from Hard|OCP where Lowtax had made some trading cards or something and young me found it hilarious. when I joined they didn't have the file forums yet but there was a fourm just for posting porn (DPPH). if you posted a question or request without reading the rules then the mods would post "pain.jpg" (a collection of ogrish images) in your thread and lock it. edit -  I've been posting here almost half my life

I got my first taste of goon culture playing EVE online in January. I liked hanging out with the guys in GSF so much that I decided to come and see what sort of place had spawned people like them. I don't play EVE anymore due to real life issues but I really love helping people in the home networking thread, occasionally posting in the Planetside 2 thread, and getting advice on hardware purchases from different threads in Serious Hardware / Software Crap. Also I love reading the healthcare stories thread, possibly a bit too much, oh well. It takes my mind off of things and reminds that my life could be much worse, which really helps at times. And the Cancer thread has been amazing at helping me work through the things going on in my life these days. Hell I even bought an avatar for someone in that thread who still had the default one because they were so helpful and encouraging when my wife was initially diagnosed with cancer. (things are looking very good with that now) Ok, too much serious crap. I never would have discovered Unifi APs (really love them) for my house (which lead to me getting some tough switches as well) and probably wouldn't have gotten a Logitech G40 (which I love) for my desktop at home without the stuff I have read here on SA. I even built my pfSense home router using a parts list from the home networking thread and I love the thing. The drat thing paid for itself by allowing me to sell my ASA 5505 Sec+ and its at least an order of magnitude or two more powerful than the ASA was. I knew about SA back in 06 or 07 but I was just too cheap to get an account and didn't see any reason to bother at the time. I was such an idiot back then. SA has seriously changed my life. And I think its changing me a bit too as I start to lurk less and post in more threads.
