I loved the sections where Davros is talking about the Daleks as his "children", as well as admitting that he has zero control over them and glorying to the fact that they're holding out on exterminating Clara till she runs. I like the idea that at the end of his life and resigned to his fate (which I don't believe for a second) he's willing to just sit back and enjoy the fruits of his labor, and enjoy the fact his "kids" are doing so well.

I think it was you or someone else mentioned in the previous thread that Daleks used to say a whole bunch of things repeatedly and excitedly, not just "Exterminate". That's why the scene with the eye-stalk guy was kinda redeemed for me because they were all going "Secure the TARDIS! SECURE THE TARDIIIIS!"

Wheat Loaf posted:

I quite enjoyed that Davros's presence was fairly understated. He's just there and as far as I can recall there wasn't a huge amount of hype for it ahead of time. I don't think I would have liked it as much if there'd been all sorts of dramatic posing and shape-throwing and wild-eyed teeth-clenching and what-have-you.

Yeah also this. He's just sort of "well I'm old but I'm still able to hurt you, now go ahead and die before tea time".

There's a whole bunch of minutiae mentioned in passing (like the three different versions of Atlantis) but none of that was necessary to understand the story.

The worst part might be the Sisterhood that the snake guy goes second but all you need to infer from that is "they're hiding the Doctor".

the point isn't "I don't understand this references," the point is "why is this loaded with old poo poo." Every single moment of the episode relies on "oh poo poo, it's that thing again!"

This complaint is funny because for the past few years the complaint has been "why is Moffat referencing stuff we never saw in previous episodes and expecting us to take it at face value?"

It sounds like you just don't like referencing things that happen off screen, whether they happened in a previous episode or not.

The bitching about that was because the doctor's long relationship with the Space Church and Mother Superior was a key part of the payoff and explanation of the Doctor's arc up to there. Payoffs shouldn't involve elements out of nowhere. This is a fairly basic fact of narrative.

Another example is the Moffat trio, who made people "confused" because it felt like they missed an episode introducing them.

Attitude Indicator posted:

i don't like the lack of originality. like I said, every single element in this story is old and used. hey it's davros. hey it's the master. hey it's karn. it's skaro. it's the shadow proclamatinon. it's unit. it's atlantis. it's tom baker. mccoy. old daleks. human daleks. the doctor's going to die again.

The Ood in the background of the cantina scene is much more "old and used" than a one liner about Atlantis.

It was pretty blah with just Clara, and then Missy showed up. Definitely felt like they didn't need all the time of a two-parter. But who knows, maybe next week would never have been compressed into one episode and the alternative was more "why not just have a two-parter" mess like last two seasons.

And I don't care what anyone said, the "axe fight" was pretty great, too.

Initially I thought the snake dude looking for the Doctor was just a setup for the overarching plot and then this episode would be about the planes since I thought Davros was supposed to show up later in the season. I'm happy to be wrong though.

Plus did he really "make" Davros, or did he change history? So either Davros became an rear end in a top hat for some other reason, or like the Master and the Drums (theconstantsoundofdrumscan'tyouHEARthem) he "always" had an old sonic screwdriver stashed in his wheelchair and had once seen the TARDIS but totally forgot until today.

The implication from the beginning of the episode is that the Doctor left Davros and he became an entity of hate because of that, but now it looks like the Doctor saves him even though he's going to go make the Daleks.

And maybe he was just waiting until the right Doctor showed up, I mean confronting David Tennant with a sonic screwdriver probably wouldn't give much catharsis.

Yeah I thought the Daleks was just spying on him the whole time. I guess it doesn't really make sense since Davros is actively looking for the Doctor.

Overnights are out. The panicky may wish to go sit on the throne before they read this. At the very least it's worth going "hmmmm" over.

3.7 million, a 16.6% share. This is the first sub-4 million overnight figure since 3.6 million for Part 3 of Battlefield, almost exactly 26 years ago to the day. The show was also 5th for Saturday, being beaten obviously by the rugby (which it was directly competing with) and by Strictly, but also was pipped by a short nose by Casualty and the evening news, which it usually beats handily. This is potentially significant because I recall a long conversation on the old Outpost Gallifrey forum before NewWho came back, during which someone in a position to know said something along the lines of (yes, there's a lot of IIRCs and conditionals in there) "Producers these days would sell their family to consistently get 4 million on the overnights and an AI over 75; as long as NewWho gets both of those it'll be renewed forever." Of course that was a long time ago, but it's absolutely not good news for the show to be pulling in similar figures to Casualty.

Consolidated rating for episode 1 drops in midweek; that's when we really find out whether there's a serious cause for concern.

What were the ratings for the first episode? I saw the initial ones but not with the digital views factored in.

So I finally caught up with S9 because school and everything distracted me after the Dalek two parter.

Overall pretty good. I'm guessing like me, everyone else found the Sandman episode to be the weakest, although it was very experimental (at least for Who) and I can respect it for that. The only really strange thing I thought was having the Woman who Lived right after the Girl who Died, but I guess there's not really anywhere else you can put it and still give Face the Raven the time it needs to develop.

The ending didn't quite stick but I appreciate that instead of having a big end of the universe plot it's just the Doctor trying to save someone he cares about. The way they left the door open for Jenna Coleman to come back (even if just reoccurring) was a bit sloppy, but not significantly different from other stories.

In retrospect, Heaven Sent kind of ruins the pacing of the overarching story, but it's so good as an episode that I think it's worth it.

So to get some discussion going, what did you guys think of the season in terms of two-parters? We had a bunch of them this time out (nearly every story save one, with the final three episodes one big long story in my mind) and I think the only one that really worked in terms of "old school" cliffhangers was Under the Lake/Before the Flood with the Doctor-ghost.

I think they erred on the side of too many two parters, but they were pretty good.

Although a couple weren't really two parters - The Woman who Lived is a continuation of The Girl Who Died, but it could've been put anywhere before Face the Raven and it would've been about as meaningful. Likewise, Heaven Sent and Hell Bent are mostly independent of each other, at least moreso than the Dalek or Zygon two parters.

12 is needy but (by the end of the episode) he's kinda accepted that he can't do everything. And honestly it's a better resolution than the Amy sendoff of "The Doctor can't ever see them again because of a bullshit rule that the audience doesn't really understand".

NuWho follows the pattern of modern genre television in focusing more overtly on character arcs and relationships. As a consequence, the companion and why they're with the Doctor are bigger deals than they were on the old show. For the most part they don't just decide to hang around for a while, there's a bond formed between them and the Doctor. Therefore, their departure needs to have a firmer reason behind it- it's a loss, the end of a friendship, there really has to be a strong reason why we're not going to see them again.

Yeah, also the companion (at least in contemporary times) is an audience insert, so you would have to figure out a way to make them voluntarily leave without making your real life audience also want to leave/stop watching. This can also be handled terribly - imagine if a companion left because she found out she was pregnant and valued motherhood over all else in her life?

It's much easier to either incapacitate them in some way (including stuck in a parallel dimension/inaccessible timeline) or give them something cool to do (Clara, and arguably Rose too).
