Kuro and his fight with Luffy was cool as poo poo. Luffy stopping Kuro by ripping up a huge rock was great.

However, I despise the name "Cat out of the Bag Attack." I mean, "Death Scoop" isn't much better, but the former is just exceedingly lame. Probably worse since it ties it to the 4kids dub too.

God drat there was so much awesome poo poo packed into that chapter I don't even know what I'm most excited about.

It's Sanji. We have a backstory but not an origin story, besides being from North (right?) Blue so oh man there's so much potential there.

People like to say "I hope Person A is just really strong instead of having a Devil Fruit." But why is that inherently more interesting?

This is a Shonen Battle Manga. Even if a person doesn't have a fruit, they're still going to have a gimmick to try and make the fight more entertaining to watch than just a slugfest. I don't think Shanks has a fruit either, but I wouldn't necessarily be disappointed if he did because he needs something to set him apart from the other swordsman and punchmen when and if his first actual battle ever happens.

Chopper eats cotton candy all the time. Even as recently as the Law sandwich gag before Dressrosa, Chopper ordered a cotton candy sandwich. You guys are overthinking this, his bounty photo even shows him eating it.

A lot of those instances are post-Bounty, so it makes sense that Oda would throw in Cotton Candy-loving gags now that he has the nickname. I think at the time that the bounty + name first appeared, however, there'd been very few instances of cotton candy eating.

I wondered about it too, way back then, but I just filed it away as a funny joke/poster.

Fantastic chapter.

Robin and the death of Ryuunosuke was the best, I love that she actually cried for it. Poor lovely dragon drawing, we barely knew ye.

I like double-jumping rabbit girl, that was a neat effect. If people like Bepo and Pekoms are Minkmen though, there's gotta be a catch for the Minkmen designs. Unless of course it's just Oda being Oda and male minkmen are full animals while female minkmen are furry girls. Either way I'm hype for Elephant Island Adventures.

Cipher Pol 9

Hey neat, I was right, even if it was a pretty easy guess to make. I don't mind though, it's very Oda and even if he only has one character design for women the characterization remains good. Plus animalface makes it difficult to get more Namiface.

Bepo is besto, and I want to learn more about the Electro. I guess it's a Minkman ability and the "Mantra" of this arc?

Mangastream's translation's different in a few places. It mentions that Jack's obituary was printed, no "he's dead, no he's not dead." And no mention of Zoro shooting fire... I wonder where they got that. Or was it right? I'll be looking forward to Monday.

Also I was listening to the Jump Podcast and they pointed out the gator-mount's name is Warny, which is a stretched out Wani (alligator in Japanese) which made me finally realize that Wanda is probably derived from "Wan" which is the sound dogs make in Japanese.

We even got set up for a sword-user amongst Sanji's siblings for Brook to deal with.

Yeah, I loving loved the panels after he got blown away where it's obvious he isn't actually hurt at all, he's just laying there like he's back in the Groggy Ring thinking, "Okay, this poo poo is getting old."

I also liked the note of Judge having taught Sanji the sword. I kind of want to see him almost get forced to use it only to have Zoro catch him and stop him since that's his bit.

I liked almost all of the Dressrosa side characters but I agree that invulnerable Doflamingo and the Bird Cage dragged down the arc. It was unnecessary, the arc already had enough tension without a sudden unstoppable kill everyone button. Not having Luffy Vs Straw Hats or even Straw Hats Vs Luffy was also such a let down after Doffy's introduction. Still enjoyed the arc overall though! Lots of fun characters and moments, just too long.

I'm currently living in Japan and by some stroke of luck a local theatre is showing the One Piece Kabuki film. I went and watched it tonight and oh my god is that an experience. It's abridged and changed quite a bit- some sections are montaged with on-screen narration and other bits I think were just cut for time, since there were actor credits for characters who never appeared in the show. Pizarro from the BB Crew for instance.

Overall it was an absolute blast though. For those that don't know, it opens on the Sabaody Auction House and runs up to the scene where Jimbei reminds Luffy that he still has his crew. Zoro's actor was a personal favorite, as he did a competent job playing Zoro in the beginning then absolutely stole the show as Bon Clay in Impel Down. Sanji's actor also did a good job of being cool as gently caress as Sanji then really drat cool as Inazuma. I didn't know either of those actor connections during the show though, so while Zoro's came as an awesome shock, Sanji's was neat and also explained why Inazuma got some big dramatic moments during the escape. Also Ace's actor was appropriately distractingly handsome. Overall, wonderful, and I really hope they release an unabridged version sometime as I'd like to see it all.

Sub Harrison posted:

Sounds like a blast. I don't understand why they'd need to add characters though. One Piece's character list must be on par with the Simpsons cast.

Oh no, there weren't any original characters made for the Kabuki, I just meant there were characters that were credited with actors who never appeared in the footage I saw, likely since they had to speed through and abridge a lot of it.

Sinners Sandwich posted:

That loving sucks it's abridged

Agreed. I understand why they did it though, I imagine the full show was probably something like four hours long. The version in theatres was around 2 hours but there was a lot missing. For example, the majority of Amazon Lily was montaged to get to Luffy finding out about Ace's impending execution, and Luffy's break into Impel Down had the same to get to him meeting Bon Clay. Then Pizarro was in the credits and cast list but not in the show, so I imagine there were some scenes with Blackbeard and his new crew cut for time too. I can understand some of that, but other parts sucked, like during the shortened Marineford they show Whitebeard's entrance but then later on when Whitebeard reappears he already had his Squardo and Akainu wounds. It might have been covered in narration, but I really would have liked to have seen at least the first moment.
