Someone once gave a presentation that touched on the spiritual traditions of East and West as one reason for the popularity of mecha in Japan and their relative rarity in the US. I'm oversimplifying to a dangerous degree here, but the thesis was that since in the Christian tradition god became a person and there are countless tales of punishment of people who tried to become as gods through their own efforts going back to Greece and Rome, Western super heroes tend to be people imbued with power. Conversely in Japan we see concepts like the kami, who most frequently take the form of elements of the land forces of nature, etc so it was much more in line with that spiritual tradition to have inanimate objects have super powers.

First off, The Black is far, far, superior to the Godzilla anime. Don't let visual similarities put you off.

Next, we've had some amazing 40K fan video in recent years.

Power armor is like a small mech, right ? This video is by one artist. Concept, modeling, animation, and especially sound design. No, we aren't expected to know what's really going on.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DVXEYksoE6c

And this has titans in it, those definitely are mechs. An Imperator-class counts as whatever it wants to. An artist took the audio book of Helsreach and animated it. The style evolves as he goes through it, but it started good.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nKMdHfOC7VQ

The really, really good news is that both of those artists now work for Games Workshop Animation. The Helsreach creator is doing a Blood Angels series. The Astartes creator... they should just give him as much money, drugs, and equipment as he needs and let him do whatever the hell he wants.

And there's more, GW is getting into animation and they're doing it by pulling in the top fan talent. It's a brilliant move, and a rare one for any IP holder go outside for creative talent.

Games Workshop leans way, way too far into lionizing their fascist xenophobic Empire of Man for me to recommend their products to anyone at this point. The people who remembered it was satire are long gone from the company.

It was never a satire. It was always just dumb. 40k is and always has been intentionally dumb and ridiculously over the top. The worshippers of the god of blood and skulls have giant robots called the Lord of Skulls that is full of blood and skulls, It has a cannon in the crotch that fires boiling blood and its right arm is a cannon that shoots giant skulls that explode into shrapnel and the shrapnel is flaming skulls.

40k kicks rear end.

The first edition released back in 1987 that was more a RPG with miniatures rules than a miniatures game very much was satire, and even some of the stuff from 2e like the infamous character named after Margaret Thatcher fell into that though late 2e was starting to take itself too seriously and it just went downhill from there. I'm glad to hear GW is trying to get the Nazis out but as long as their hero empire is a bunch of racists with skulls out the rear end they're always going to be highly suspect.

Tatsunoko also could have simply not signed another deal with Harmony Gold a couple of years ago, which would have been a much easier way to end the whole problem.

This is a pretty common publicity photo for military aircraft and armored fighting vehicles in real life so you may also be conflating half-remembered images of Apaches and T-72s with mecha.

it's more that there isn't a culture or reason around the reckless child endangerment. it's just this one perfectly normal boy that everyone has decided to use as the obvious glowing weak point for the hero robot squad. there were a lot of opportunities in the first few episodes to make the kid somehow irreplaceable to the entire process but instead it was always a deliberate choice to include him. at any point they could replace him with an adult or even leave the robots to act autonomously, but instead they let the bratty child arrest people.

mamoru in ggg was pretty annoying a lot of the time, but at least he had a reason to be there!

If you don't like watching the show don't watch the show. I loathe a lot of stuff that is generally popular and I like the stuff I like, some of which is also popular. It's a tent big enough for super robots and there's room for you under it, too.

*deconstruction is one of those concepts that over the years I've learned to actively despise as it almost never has good results cause most people who try to do that are people who think they're way more clever than they actually are

The only reason anyone talks about deconstruction in the context of anime is because ADV used the word on the back of the Evangelion VHS boxes 20 years ago.

So some news:

Anybody remember Megas XLR, from roughly around the Gundam-Wing on American and European TV era?

The show is basically "What if Jay and Silent Bob found a Megazord?" and its just pure comedy and homage and awesome poo poo start to finish.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=koesW3xMKtY

So on the tail-end of the lovely situation with HBO delisting and removing access to watch a lot of shows under the Cartoon Network merger as a tax-writeoff, we just learned that Megas XLR won't ever be broadcast again by HBO, Cartoon Network or either's respective affiliates. More here, covered by Saberspark:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c7nmB1ZDIG0

Megas XLR particularly has been shot down repeatedly by accidently competing with other shows in other slots and its a huge shame (history below)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V593fBPzP0c

There is a silver lining though:
Fans come to the rescue again, remastering it in 4K. If it looks blurry, that's just how it looked in its original resolution, due to the mastering and composition techniques and decisions used in production. Genuinely very funny show.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9cwhdOpXGrY

Check the comments of the video for download link. Its a whopping 120GB though. I'm clearing out the space for it as we speak, and this is making me realize I'm due a few upgrades.

The franchise gets a lot of love from fans, including animations and even STL files for 3D printing floating around out there.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UBr2d-rSbAo

It is also available from Apple's store, and someone in the gunpla thread made a Psyco XLR several years ago.

The novels were recently translated and available in English, along with many of the side stories. Fumoffu is some of the high school stuff that was removed from the first three novels and a few of the high school side stories.

The ps4 game goes to the end of the novels; it speeds through some plot points and character development to get there but it's a pretty good summary and better than slogging through ancient fanlations.

From manga about the goofy antics of the small family company subcontracted to build the Zaku I to Special Vehicles Section 2 having to fight dinosaurs, the humor of giant robots in mundane situations is a good time, but this show doesn't do either half well enough to be enjoyable.

If the show sucks stop watching it, this is two or three mecha series in a row that you've done detailed reviews of with your disdain just dripping off the screen. You mentioned an "I must bear witness" kink with your Kyoukai Senki Let's Watch last year but life is too short to watch hours of lovely cartoons.
