Skaven are great because they're one of the few really unique things in Warhammer. Everything else is cribbed at least partially from some other setting, but "insane backstabbing mad scientist rat men who react to uranium like it's PCP and cocaine at the same time" is pretty novel.

I'm pretty skeptical since GW's attitude these days seems to be throwing their IP at seemingly random companies. On the one hand you may have something cool like the Total War spinoff, but on the other hand there's a ton of Warhammer Fantasy/40k shovelware out there.

They've made a bunch of ok-but-not-incredible games, but in terms of shooters they did make Lead and Gold, which I thought was a pretty cool shooter that really only failed because it came out around the same time that TF2 went F2P.

It occurs to me that I haven't really seen any representation from clan Pestilens in this. There's four major skaven clans - Eshin (assassins, gutter runners), Moulder (packmasters, rat ogres), Skrye (:science:, guns), but I haven't seen anything from Pestilens, who usually handle A) Biological/chemical warfare, and B) plague monks, who are basically anthropomorphic chainsaws. Typically other clans will rent out their services, plus part of the end times is that the skaven leaders finally got their poo poo together and managed to get them working cohesively together instead of their usual relentless squabbling and infighting.

In addition to what everyone else said, there's also a scaling in-mission difficulty thing where there are hidden items you can grab that take up inventory space and/or debuff your team but which make you get better loot, meaning if you're running into a "difficulty x is too easy, difficulty x+1 is too hard" thing you have access to an intermediary step.

Block and dodge. If you have full stamina (the shields when you're blocking) and are blocking his attacks will take all of your stamina but not hurt you. The dodge will help fill the gap while you're waiting to recharge stamina.

I think the real problem with them is that they'd be much more limited in where they can spawn - you can have a rat ogre or a stormvermin patrol basically anywhere, but the doomwheel wouldn't make much sense anywhere except wide-open areas like the big plaza after the gate event on Horn of Magnus and the bell's even larger.

They've also stated that they think having multiple different products for the same setting* leads to them "competing against themselves" which is why they're so allergic to spinoffs and video game properties and so on instead of tapping different parts of the market and that video games (or possibly just Pokemon - you know, nintendo's biggest moneymaker) is/are a passing fad. They also have no idea how to run an online presence. Essentially, their leadership is stuck in the 80s.

Kind of wish they'd remove the bits that prevent you from going backwards on the map. More than one occasion we had a member get caught by that one rat guy and pulled away practically as they were moving off that fall or ramp or whatever have you. Since the rest of the team was already off it, they couldn't do anything to save the person. Those two elements don't gel well together.

Those were all over the place in Left 4 Dead as well. They serve a couple important purposes - regularly gating the level so that you're not tempted to backtrack and pick up the healthkit at the start of the level, and making sure you're sticking together both in a broad sense and progressing through the level in a group instead of everyone running at their own pace.

e: plus in versus (which normally favored the survivors heavily) they act as points that give the enemy team a temporary advantage by making the survivors slow down to make sure they all go together, which gives more time to spawn, and if you play your cards right/the survivors have a guy who lags behind for whatever reason it's an easy kill.

Each character has ~5 distinct items per slot and the base stats on them are always the same (but scale with rarity, i.e. a blue item is flat-out better baseline than a green item). They each have 1-3 properties which are semirandom (each weapon/character has a pool it can choose from) but they're mostly special buffs like "5% chance to heal when you hit with this"'; there are very few "this item just has 10% more damage"-type enchants.
